Opis:
Port shoreline resources are the basis of port and shipping development, and its assessment method has become one of the hot issues in port research. On the basis of constructing a reasonable index evaluation system, this paper constructs the fuzzy evaluation matrix based on the triangular fuzzy analytic hierarchy process and constructs the fuzzy evaluation matrix by using the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method, and obtains the maximum membership degree of the port shoreline resources. Compared with the traditional port shoreline Resource evaluation methods, the new one got more advantages in objective and quantitative. Finally, Combined with the Nanjing section of the Yangtze River as a case for verification, the results show that the model can accurately solve the problem of resource evaluation of port shoreline.

Opis:
The paper deals with the conformal mapping of finite, plane, simply connected domains, representing oceans, lakes, estuaries, bays, lagoons, and other natural water bodies of this kind. As a rule, they are bounded by geometrically complex shorelines. The partial differential problems investigated in Oceanology and posed in such domains have turned out to be difficult to solve for at least three reasons. They follow on from the mathematical properties of the differential equations governing such problems, from the just-mentioned geometrical complexity of the domains of solution, and from the sensitivity of the solutions to boundary conditions. In view of the last reason the contours admitted as boundaries of the domains of the solution ought to be as close to the real shorelines as possible. The obviously inaccurate approximation of the shorelines by ‘staircases’, which appears rather often (cf. Catewicz & Jankowski 1983, Lin & Chandler-Wilde 1996) as a consequence of applying finite difference methods to the solution of the partial differential problems, raises serious doubts from the point of view of Numerical Fluid Mechanics. It is recalled in the paper that such inaccuracies are not unavoidable: that complicated plane domains can be transformed accurately by means of properly applied conformal mapping onto regular, canonical domains – in particular, onto discs or squares. Such a transformation is demonstrated on the rather difficult example of the Vistula Lagoon. The transformation begins with the decomposition of the domain into five plane subdomains, each one of which is eventually transformed onto a disc. Every such result is arrived at quite independently of the remaining subdomains, by means of a set of properly selected consecutive mappings. Hence, the final canonical domain consists in this case of a system of five discs which, however, within the framework of this differential problem, have to be treated as interconnected. The interconnections involve images of four segments of straight lines, separating the original subdomains. The transformations and the resulting canonical domain presented in the paper are intended to be applied to the solution of certain hydrodynamical problems concerning the Vistula Lagoon, which will be published elsewhere.

Opis:
The study, carried out in 2003 and 2006 at the Lubiatowo Coastal Research Station (Poland), located on the non-tidal southern Baltic coast (tidal range < 0.06 m), focused on larger rhythmic forms (mega-cusps) with wavelengths in the interval 500 m > Lc > 20 m. Statistical analyses of detailed shoreline configurations were performed mostly with the Discrete Wavelet Transform method (DWT). The beach is composed of fine sand with grain diameter D50 ≈ 0.22 mm, which produces 4 longshore sandbars and a gently sloping seabed with β = 0.015. The analysis confirms the key role of bars in hydro- and morphodynamic surf zone processes. The hypothesis was therefore set up that, in a surf zone with multiple bars, the bars and mega-scale shoreline rhythmic forms form one integrated physical system; experimental evidence to substantiate this hypothesis was also sought. In such a system not only do self-regulation processes include swash zone phenomena, they also incorporate processes in offshore surf zone locations. The longshore dimensions of large cusps are thus related to the distances between periodically active large bed forms (bars). The spatial dimension of bar system activity (number of active bars) depends, at a given time scale, on the associated hydrodynamic conditions. It was assumed that such a time scale could include either the development and duration of a storm, or a period of stable, yet distinct waves, capable of remodelling the beach configuration. The indentation to wavelength ratio of mega-cusps for the studied non-tidal dissipative environment may be one order of magnitude greater than for mesotidal, reflective beaches.

Opis:
The proper management of water resources is currently an important issue, not only in Poland, but also worldwide. Water resource management involves various activities including monitoring, modelling, assessment and designing the condition and extent of waters sources. The efficient management of water resources is essential, especially in rural areas where it ensures greater stability and efficiency of production in all sectors of the economy and leads to the well-being of the ecosystem. The performed analyses have demonstrated that the time of origin of the cadastral data defining the course of water boundaries has a significant effect on their quality. Having analysed the factors (timeliness, completeness, redundancy) used to assess the quality of cadastral data, their clear trend of changes in time was noticed. Thus, it is possible to specify the estimated degree of quality of cadastral data defining the course of watercourse boundaries only based on the information about the method, time and area of data origin in the context of the former partition sector. This research paper presents an original method of assessing the quality of spatial data that is used to determine the course of the shoreline of natural watercourses with unregulated channels flowing through agricultural land. The research has also demonstrated that in order to increase the efficiency of work, the smallest number of principal factors should be selected for the final analysis. Limiting the analyses to a smaller number of factors does not affect the final result, yet it definitely reduces the amount of work.

Opis:
The aim of the paper is to identify a methodology capable of assessing shoreline changes through a geomatic approach based on the use of GIS (Geographic Information System) software. The paper describes a case study that reports the evolution of a coastline over a period of more than 100 years using medium and large-scale metric maps available in different periods. In fact, the coastlines were obtained from the source maps of the Italian Cadastre (dated 1890), from numerical cartography available on the coastline and acquired in different period at scales 1:5000 and 1:2000 and, more recently, from the Google Earth Pro platform. To analyse the evolution of the coastline a new procedure has been performed which is based on the use of GIS software, in particular a plugin called DSAS that allows the evaluation of the changes in the coastline and also obtains a statistical analysis of its evolution. The results showed the ease and applicability of the method in determining the evolution of the coastline and the strong erosion of a stretch of coastline with important socio-economic consequences and repercussions was highlighted in the analysed case study.

Opis:
The new Water Law Act, which entered into force on 1 January 2018, has introduced numerous changes regarding the management of land covered by water. One of the most important changes concerns the procedure for determining the course of the shoreline. According to the previous act, the shoreline was determined ex officio during the modernisation of the land register survey. After the change in the legal regulations, it is no longer obligatory. The natural change in the course of the shoreline results in a change in the extent of ownership rights and the need to define the legal status of the land adjacent to the water, as flowing waters and the land beneath in Poland belong exclusively to the State Treasury. The problem of the undetermined legal status of private land occupied by water is significant because the land covered with flowing water is not subject to civil turnover. Without performing a demarcation procedure between the land occupied by a watercourse and the adjacent land, the owner cannot sell the property. The lack of the obligation to determine the course of the shoreline during the modernisation of the land register survey results in the aggravation of the problem of the undetermined legal status of land under water. This work analyses the boundaries of plots occupied by the watercourse in two provinces (Świętokrzyskie, Śląskie) where the land register survey was modernised after the entry into force of the new Water Law Act. The aim was to determine the scale of the problem of the land use Wp (flowing water ) occurring on private land.

Opis:
In order to make a navigable connection between the Vistula Lagoon and the Baltic Sea independent of an attitude of the Russian authorities, a cross-cut in the Polish part of the Vistula Spit is planned. The cross-cut will constitute an alternative waterway with respect to the existing one, leading through the Pilawa Strait which belongs to the Russian territorial waters. The new outlet will require breakwaters and an approach channel on the open sea side, as well as a waterway across the Vistula Lagoon to the harbour of Elbląg. The planned cross-cut is located about 3 km from the root of the Vistula Spit, at Skowronki village. The paper comprises an analysis of regional wave parameters in a mean statistical year on the basis of the Baltic wave climate reconstructed for the period of 44 years, together with a calculation of the longshore sediment transport rates. An influence of the planned coastal structures on the shoreline evolution, as well as the approach channel silting-up rates, in the first 10 years after the construction of the cross-cut, are estimated. An optimised layout of the planned approach channel and lengths of the planned breakwaters are recommended to facilitate the maintenance of the coast and the new waterway.

Opis:
The paper deals with the conformal mapping of a plane, finite, simply connected domain, representing the southern segment of the Gulf of Gdańsk, enclosed from the North by a parallel, tangential to Cape Rozewie. The segment contains the Hel Peninsula. The method of double decomposition, presented in Prosnak & Cześnik (2001), is applied to the transformation of such an original domain onto a canonical one, which consists of two separate unit discs. The first decomposition concerns the domain which is split into two adjacent subdomains by means of a segment of a straight line. The second decomposition involves two holomorphic functions, each one mapping a subdomain onto a separate disc. The decomposition consists in replacing the function by a sequence of simple ones, so that the mapping is performed step-wise. Each sequence starts with the Schwarz-Christoffel function, the last step consisting in an inversion that transforms an infinite circular domain onto a disc. The data for the problem is contained in the Annex, and is represented by two sets of rectangular coordinates defining consecutive discrete points of the contours bounding the subdomains. The solution to the problem consists of:
– two sets of functions, consecutively transforming each of the subdomains;
– the numerical values of the parameters of these functions;
– a set of figures illustrating the consecutive transformations. The accuracy of the first, and of the penultimate transformation are given, because only in the case of these two functions do the unknown coefficients have to be determined by means of a suitable iterative process. The coefficients of all the remaining functions are evaluated from exact formulae. It should be recalled that the depth of the Gulf of Gdańsk varies considerably – from a few to 110 metres – the gradients of the bottom being rather large. Therefore, the domain of the solution for any mathematical problem describing the hydrodynamical phenomena occurring in the Gulf is usually taken to be three-dimensional. Nevertheless, the paper deals with the transformation of the free surface of the Gulf, assumed as plane. It should be emphasized that this assumption does not mean that the whole domain of the solution has to be regarded as plane.

Shoreline changes and groundwater quality monitoring have become pressing issues for the coastal region of Bangladesh. This study investigated the shoreline changes from 2000 to 2020 and evaluated the groundwater quality, as well as SWI in the Kuakata coastal area. While analyzing satellite images, the temporal shoreline changes were assessed through the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) in ArcGIS 10.4.1. Higher erosion rates (>2 m/year) were found in the southernmost part and the SE part of the studied area. Twenty-five groundwater samples were collected, and the physicochemical parameters were measured to assess the groundwater quality. The geographic information system (GIS) was used to assess the spatial variation of the EC, pH, and Cl⁻ contents through the inverse distance weighted (IDW) interpolation method. The EC, Cl⁻, and pH values of the studied groundwater ranged from (1.2 mS/cm to 19.5 mS/cm), (79.88 mg/L to 11241.67 mg/L), and (7.9 to 8.7), repectively. The analysis revealed that the majority of the groundwater samples were unsuitable for drinking purpose due to higher EC and Cl⁻ values. Saline water intrusion (SWI) was determined by using the alternative EC vs Cl⁻ method in the southern part of the Kuakata beach area, which was closest to the sea.

The shoreline is an important geographical zone, and knowledge of its accurate location can be crucial for coastal management and mapping. The ever-increasing number of aerial and satellite sensors is leading to research related to the development of new methods for the automatic extraction of the shoreline. Currently, there is a lot of research in this area with different research methodologies. In this paper, an analysis of shoreline extraction methods was carried out. Based on the analysis undertaken, current research processes in this field can be verified. This enabled the further evaluation of the research methodologies studied, including the identification of basic assessment elements for shoreline extraction accuracy. Practical aspects of this work include the ability to establish the correct methods to assess the accuracy of extracted shorelines for both research and production processes related to data extracted from remotely sensed images.

This article explores the use of Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) derived point clouds to extract the shoreline of the Lake Kłodno (Poland), based on their geometry properties. The data collection was performed using the Velodyne VLP-16 laser scanner, which was mounted on the HydroDron Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV). A modified version of the shoreline extraction method proposed by Xu et al. was employed, comprising of the following steps: (1) classifying the point cloud using the Euclidean cluster extraction with a tolerance parameter of 1 m and min. cluster size of 10,000 points, (2) further filtration of boundary points by removing those with height above 1 m from the measured elevation of water surface, (3) manual determination of a curve consisting of 5 points located along the entire shoreline extraction region at a relatively constant distant from the coast, (4) removal of points that are further from the curve than the average distance, repeated twice. The method was tested on the scanned section of the lake shoreline for which Ground Control Points (GCP) were measured using a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Real Time Kinematic (RTK) receiver. Then, the results were compared to the ground truth data, obtaining an average position error of 2.12 m with a standard deviation of 1.11 m. The max error was 5.54 m, while the min. error was 0.41 m, all calculated on 281 extracted shoreline points. Despite the limitations of this parametric, semi-supervised approach, those preliminary results demonstrate the potential for accurate shoreline extraction based on LiDAR data obtained using an USV. Further testing and optimisation of this method for larger scale and better generalisation for different waterbodies are necessary to fully assess its effectiveness and feasibility. In this context, it is essential to develop computationally efficient methods for approximating shorelines that can accurately determine their course based on a set of points.

Opis:
A plethora of physical parameters, such as hydro-, litho- and morpho-dynamic char- acteristics, are essential for understanding the response of coastal systems to intense sea states in terms of sediment transport and shoreline evolution. Nowadays, numerical models are extensively applied to meet the above needs and support coastal planning and management. In the present work, a 2DH dynamic modelling system is used for simulating the hydrodynamic and meteorological/ oceanographic characteristics of the Saronic Gulf, in order to examine circulation patterns and predict sediment transport phenomena under high wave conditions at the coast of Varkiza, a sandy beach in the southern Attica, Greece. Time series of wind and wave data were used as input at the open boundaries of the model domain while the model was calibrated and validated through (linear and directional) statistical measures with respect to in situ wave measurements, since there was lack of hydrodynamic data at the site of interest.The simulation period of the model was between January 3 and February 19, 2013, with consecutive high waves in-between. The good agreement of the numerical results from the wave and hydrodynamic model with in situ measurements confirmed the suitability of the model for the support of sediment transport rates at Varkiza coastal segment. Model results reveal that there is a counter-clockwise water circulation during high waves that contribute to the erosion of the examined beach, which is also confirmed by independent field measurements.

The main aim of the study was to introduce a spatial database application for the estimation of changes in shoreline position. The open-source PostgreSQL database system with the PostGIS spatial extension was used as the data store for digitalised shorelines. The solution to calculations of the shoreline changes was based on the functions written in the PL/SQL language and geospatial functions provided by the PostGIS extension. The traditional baseline and transects method was used to quantify the distances and rate of shoreline movement. Outputs of the calculations were stored in the database table and simply visualised using graphical functions in the R software environment or in GIS Desktop software. The advantage of presented method is the application of SQL language in the analysis of the relation between the geometry of shorelines stored in the database table, which, compared to other similar solutions, gives the user fully open, simple analytical code and enable selecting custom parameters of analysis, modifying code and performing additional calculations

Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) produced from stereoscopic, submeter-resolution High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) imagery provide a solid basis for all morphometric analyses of the surface of Mars. In view of the fact that a more effective use of DTMs is hindered by complicated and time-consuming manual handling, the automated process provided by specialists of the Ames Intelligent Robotics Group (NASA), Ames Stereo Pipeline, constitutes a good alternative. Four DTMs, covering the global dichotomy boundary between the southern highlands and northern lowlands along the line of the presumable Arabia shoreline, were produced and analysed. One of them included forms that are likely to be indicative of an oceanic basin that extended across the lowland northern hemisphere of Mars in the geological past. The high resolution DTMs obtained were used in the process of landscape visualisation.
