Opis:
Various types and parameters of terrorist IEDs were shown in brief. The parameters and properties of cylinder-shaped protective containers “EPISAFE” and Bomb Killer for protection against threat of such bombs’ fragments were presented. The results of tests on several versions of multilayered, cylinder-shaped, paraaramide fibrous covers were analyzed with the elaborated methodology of assaying the protective performance of lightweight covers. The tests involved standard fragments and bear balls of various diameters as the pelting elements, propelled with the blast of TNT bar explosion. The resulting depths were listed of pelting elements penetration into various layers of cylinder-shaped covers, fabric screens and the soldier cardboard figures, placed 1 up to 10 m away of the TNT bar. The rate of decrease of results of blast of TNT bars with pelting elements, which have been located inside two lightweight textile covers and inside the big “Episafe” container were assayed.
Przedstawiono skrótowo różne typy i parametry bomb terrorystycznych typu IED. Do ochrony przed rażeniem odłamkami z tych bomb zaprezentowano parametry i właściwości kontenerów cylindrycznych ochronnych typu „Episafe” oraz Bomb Killer. Z użyciem opracowanej metodyki oceny skuteczności ochronnej lekkich osłon analizowano wyniki badań kilku wersji wielowarstwowych cylindrycznych paraaramidowych osłon włóknistych. W badaniach użyto elementów rażących w postaci odłamków standardowych i kulek łożyskowych o różnej średnicy, napędzanych wybuchem detonującej kostki TNT. Zestawiono wyniki głębokości wnikania elementów rażących w różne warstwy osłon cylindrycznych, w ekrany z tkaniny oraz w tekturowe figury żołnierzy, umieszczone w odległościach 1÷10 m od kostki TNT. Oceniono stopień zmniejszenia skutków wybuchu kostek TNT z elementami rażącymi, które były umieszczone w dwóch lekkich osłonach włókienniczych oraz w dużym kontenerze „Episafe”.

Opis:
Hagg and Sankey method assesses the functionality of containment rings, which prevent perforation of an aircraft's elements from turbine engine disc fragments after disc burst. However, the method assumption was based on studies of mechanism of destruction of ballistic shields made of among others ceramics, by small arms bullets. The hard ceramic facing of the ballistic shield blunts the projectile and breaks up the projectile's hard core used for armour piercing. As an impact result, a conoid of finely pulverized ceramic dust is formed, absorbing energy in the formation process. The dust, containing the remnants of the projectile's energy hits the backing, but is now spread over a larger area. With backings made of fibre, energy is absorbed in stretching, breaking and delamination. With backings made of ductile metal, energy is absorbed in elastic deformation. Modification of the method consisted of taking into account the stratification of the ceramic-metal composite and the occurrence of an aircraft stiffened skin, in order to better assess the effectiveness of ballistic shields. The concept of estimating the resistance was based on the described destruction mechanism, where the object of analysis is a metal containment ring with an additional ceramic protective ballistic shield. A comparison of two scenarios- with and without an additional 2 mm aluminum alloy skin was taken into account. For this particular scenario, results were sufficient for both of the two analyzed endurance criteria.

Experiments aiming at the muck improvement for Chengdu’s subway shield tunneling in water-rich sandy cobble ground initially finds out the kinds and ratio of muck improver suitable for the this strata, and through the field application determines the reasonable ratio of muck improver for shield tunneling in sandy cobble ground, providing a reference to other muck improvement for shied tunneling in similar ground. And the earth pressure balanced shield is widely used in tunnel engineering, with its characteristics as wide adaptability, safe operation, fast driving speed, low environmental noise and low cost. Taking Chengdu Metro Line as the background, aiming at the difficulty faced by EPB shield tunneling in water-rich sandy cobble ground, and based on the explorations and researches of the predecessors and scholars, engineering and technical personnel, the present paper combines with engineering examples to make a systematic summary and research on key construction technology of EPB shield tunneling through sandy cobble ground from the aspects of EPB shield adaptability, , structure and transformation of cutter and helical unearthed wares, settlement control method, and muck improvement measures. It has certain reference value and guiding significance to the selection of shield machine and the reconstruction of shield machine in complex geological condition.

The article presents the issue of increasing the passive safety of soldiers in a military vehicle, which is subject to loads resulting from an explosion IED or mine. Traditional methods of increasing security involve the application of additional layers, which are made using materials with high density. This approach contributes to the reduction of mobility and efficiency of a vehicle on the battlefield. For these reasons, it is necessary to search for a new structural design, which will benefit from a solution, which will not worsen the driving parameters of a vehicle in combat. Therefore, we propose a novel solution of openwork panel with dividers. The effectiveness of the system will be checked by verified on the bench traverse. The blast shock wave will be induced by detonation of HE charge at the central point over 430 mm from the top surface of the range stand. Experimental test will be used to validate the numerical model. After positive validation and verification, numerical model it can be used for other blast conditions or optimize protective shield. The problem considered in the study was solved numerically with the FEM using the following CAD-CAE systems: CATIA (to prepare a surface model), HyperMesh (division into finite elements), LS-Dyna (a solver), LS-PrePost (pre and post processor).

The study presents FE modelling and simulation of a system for range testing of protective shields for light armoured vehicles. The protective shield designed by Authors is used against HE mines and IEDs up to 10 kg TNT. The system consists of the multiple-use portable rangę stand, a protected Armox 500T steel plate and a protective shield. The shield has a multi-layer structure and has the following main layers: PA11 aluminum, SCACS hybrid laminate, ALPORAS aluminum foam, SCACS hybrid laminate, connected together using SOUDASEAL chemo-set glue. The HE spherical charge is suspended centrally at 400 mm distance from the top surface of the stand. Overall dimensions of the test stand are approximately 800x800x180 mm, the protected piąte has dimensions 650x650x5 mm, and the protective shield is of 450x450x76 mm dimensions. The system is supported by an additional steel plate stiffening the subsoil. FE modelling, numerical simulations and processing the results were performed for the system under blast shock wave using the following CAE systems: CATIA, HyperMesh, LS-Dyna, and LS-PrePost. The 8-nodes brick finite elements were used, taking into account friction and contact phenomena. Isotropic and orthotropic material models and advanced nonlinear equations-of-state for some parts of the system were chosen, with relevant failure and erosion criteria, including the Johnson — Cook model for Armox 500T steel and PA11 aluminum and the MAT 161 model for plies of hybrid laminates. The shock wave was modelled approximately using the LOAD BLAST ENHANCED option available in LS-Dyna Version 971 R4 Beta code. Numerical simulations were performed for 2 kg TNT.

The Ukrainian Shield (USh) is a typical province of Proterozoic alkaline magmatism where about 50 massifs and occurrences of alkaline rocks and carbonatites have been found. In spite of the wide distribution of Devonian basaltic- and alkaline magmatic rocks in the Dnieper-Donetsk depression adjacent to the USh, and in a marginal zone of the USh adjacent to folded Donbass, only alkaline rocks of Proterozoic age (1.8-2.1 Ga) that have been identified in the central interior of the USh. Some discrete bodies of 2.8 Ga subalkaline rocks also occur in Bogdanivka massif (Azov area). Occurrences of both Proterozoic (prevailing) and Phanerozoic (Devonian) alkaline rocks and kimberlites are only found in the eastern part of the USh (Azov area). Kimberlites in the central part of the Ukrainian Shield (Kirovograd region) are also of Proterozoic age (ca 1.8 Ga). It is this predominance of Precambrian rocks that makes the USh so different from other alkaline provinces where Phanerozoic alkaline rocks and kimberlites commonly prevail over Precambrian rocks. The lack of Phanerozoic alkaline magmatism on USh is poorly understood. Two main complexes of alkaline rocks - alkaline-ultrabasic (carbonatitic) and gabbro- syenitic - are distinguished in the USh. There are also rare occurrences of rock types such as alkaline- and alkaline-feldspar granites that may represent one separate alkaline-granite complex. Alkaline rocks present in the Eastern (Azov) province and in the Western province display essentially different geochemical character. Those of the Eastern province show characteristics typical of alkaline-ultrabasic rocks (e.g. high contents of incompatible rare elements 116 such as Nb, REE, Zr, Y, Sr, whereas those in the Western province are characterized by low contents of Nb and Zr, and REE in some cases. This fact is interpreted as reflecting different geodynamic conditions of their origin. The Eastern rocks were formed in rift settings, the Western rocks in crustal compressional settings (collision, subduction). Various mineral deposits of phosphorus (apatite), niobium, REE, yttrium and zirconium, including unusually rich ores of REE, Y and Zr (Azov and Yastrybetsky) are associated with the alkaline rocks and carbonatites of the USh.

There are elaborated some dependences which make it possible to compute some materials resistant to hits with the energy greater than in so far tests of the bullets of 7,62 mm caliber. The tests of being resistant to hit have been carried out with the 10GHMBA steel which has been overshot by the bullets of 12.7 mm. In order to do that the single cover plates with changeable thickness have been placed in the ballistic pendulum. On the basis of the obtained measurements like speed before and behind the specimen, the pendulum deflection angle, the force passed to the dynamometer sleeve, it is possible to define the maximum thickness of the penetrated material. The comparison with the bullets proof of various materials like steel with composites, ceramics or the mathematical models verification by an experiment can be done with direct comparison of some chosen measured parameters. For example the bullet speed behind the specimen has to be related to its thickness similarly to some other parameters which are possible to be measured. All the quantities like the bullet speed behind the specimen are the functions of the specimen thickness for the defined type of bullet. The penetration process of the material is a kind of transformation of the energy carried by the bullet into the energy of the specimen deformation, the emitted warm or into the pendulum work. In order to compare the bullet proof with various materials or the mathematical models with experiment there is proposed getting in some non-dimensional factors which define the change of the kinetic energy or the system impulse.

Some selected parameters of steel for structural-ballistic shields (OKB) used in the Navy vessels have been presented. The standards for steel to be used for ballistic shields are established by safety standards institutions and committees. There has been made an analysis of steel used for OKB of the vessels. The bullet-proof of the platters has been carried out on the appropriate position. The results of bullet-proof test of selected platters have been presented. The analysis made allowed to select the platters used for the structural-ballistic safety shields in marine vessels and give the direction for further research determined by contemporary threats of both military and terroristic nature. To produce the platters there have been used two types of armoured metal sheet which had been milled to flats made of the basic steel and which can be applied in shipbuilding. The structural-ballistic platters have had the form of flats with the total thickness of 8.5-9.2 mm. The prepared structural-ballistic platters have been technological processed in order to increase the degree of their strength. There have been also presented mechanical and technological properties of platters after heat treatment. The results of the bullet-proof have been presented in graphs form defining the dependence between the hit force and time. The effects of fire of specimen made of platters, by 7.62 mm cal. bullets with the proper speed have been seen on photographs.

This pa per gives a de scrip tion of the head shield of Alona protzi, a rare spe cies of Cla do cera (wa ter fleas) whose separated head shield has not yet been de scribed in de tail. Sub fos sil head shields of A. protzi were found in sedi ment cores taken from lakes in Den mark, Swe den, Fin land, Es to nia and Po land. De spite the rar ity of the spe cies this sug gests a wide dis tri bu tion of A. protzi in north ern Europe. The ecol ogy of A. protzi is poorly known. The en vi ron mental spec -trum of the find ing sites was wide and ranged from rela tively nu tri ent poor clear wa ter lakes to eutrophic tur bid wa terlakes, in di cat ing that A. protzi is not nar rowly re stricted. Most of the lakes were, how ever, meso- eutrophic with neu tral to high pH, and with a rela tively low abun dance of sub merged mac ro phytes. How ever, we can not ex clude the pos si bility that A. protzi mainly lives in ground wa ter and is only oc ca sion ally trans ported into lakes.

The text of Thoth. A Romance, a late nineteenth-century dystopia by Joseph Shield Nicholson, is here analysed as a generic amalgam characterised by conspicuous repetitiousness and the motif of multiplication of a circular pattern on the levels of plot, setting, imagery and characterisation. A meeting of the Gothic and the dystopian in the text results in an expansion of the former convention, politicization of the Gothic and blending of the psychoanalytic with the dystopian.

A review of recent publications concerning the South American Pantepui biogeographic region revealed recurring mistakes in the naming of several table mountains (known locally as 'tepui', 'tipu' or 'tepuy') located around the Guyana-Venezuela border, close to the transection of the so-called Schomburgk Line and the course of Rio Venamo. The mistakes are believed to have arisen and have been repeated as a result of a noticeable scarcity of detailed maps of the region, its short history of exploration and ongoing inaccessibility. An extensive analysis of modern satellite data and records of past research expeditions, supplemented by first-hand observations and assessment made during an expedition to Waukauyengtipu in the CuyuniMazaruni Region in Guyana in January 2019, are used to clarify the nomenclatural confusion regarding the tepuis of the area. We determine that the tepuis known as Cerro Venamo and Waukauyengtipu should be treated as separate and distinct geographic formations.

Opis:
Police and military units are employing the use of additional, portable protection in the form of various types of ballistic shields ever more often. They are not only used for protecting a single operator, but rather entire assault groups or bystanders. The work analyses the ballistic shields used presently and the requirements of the law enforcement forces; on this basis, the assumptions used for designing a poly-functional ballistic shield have been formulated. The design employed so-called “origami engineering”, i.e. a field tasked with designing geometrically-shifting materials by changing the location of the components. The prototype’s design is presented, and the path to its development is indicated.
Oddziały policyjne i wojskowe coraz częściej sięgają po dodatkowe, przenośne osłony w postaci różnych typów tarcz balistycznych. Służą one nie tylko do ochrony pojedynczego operatora, ale często też całej grupy ofensywnej lub osób postronnych. W pracy przeanalizowano obecnie wykorzystywane tarcze balistyczne, wymogi służb porządkowych i na tej podstawie określono założenia, które wykorzystano do zaprojektowania wielofunkcyjnej tarczy balistycznej. Projekt wykorzystał tzw. „inżynierię orgiami” – dziedzinę dotyczącą projektowania materiałów geometrycznie zmiennych poprzez zmianę położenia części składowych. Zaprezentowano projekt prototypu i wskazano dalszą drogę jego rozwoju.
