Opis:
Apart from practical and mental autonomy, the social self-reliance of preschool children constitutes an important aspect of an individual’s attaining independence and school maturity. According to the author, contemporary children sometimes present an insufficient level of social self-reliance, which may hinder them from taking actions and implementing future life roles, especially that of a student, as well as from developing independence and a sense of success. In consequence, this may contribute to lower self-esteem and difficulties in the social functioning of the child. The author supplements theoretical considerations with the results of her own research conducted in preschool education institutions in the Opole region in 2018. An analysis of 530 questionnaires from the observation of five and six-year-old children indicated that most of them attained social self-reliance in the studied areas. There were, however, also children who scored low or very low in the area and who require particular support on their way towards self-reliance. The children had the best results in their engagement and perseverance while performing jobs for others, and the poorest – in the sphere of taking decisions or co-deciding.

Opis:
Collective self-reliance is an interesting, nowadays forgotten development strategy that was popular between the 1950s and 1970s, particularly among the newly independent states of the “Third World”. It was widely discussed in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s by Yugoslav researchers, among others. This paper aims to examine Yugoslav ideas on collective self-reliance from a historical perspective on the basis of original works from the time. It presents a brief history of the idea and its resonance in the non-aligned world, contemporary criticism, as well as political, economic and spatial dimensions of the strategy and the means by which it aims to achieve the goal of an economically independent, sovereign “Third World region”. A summary of basic contrasts between two interpretations of collective self-reliance is given to illustrate the specifics of the Yugoslav approach. This developed strategy serves as a theoretical impulse to reintroduce the ideas of south-south cooperation to the development discourse.

Opis:
The study reviews the book You say you want a revolution? Radical idealism and its tragic consequences by D. Chirot (Princeton, Princeton University Press, 2020) and, at the same time, advances a viewpoint on social revolutions based on Thoreau’s imperative of the separation from evil. Why most social revolutions have dangerous and painful consequences while their promoters claim that the revolution will alleviate human suffering and will bring happiness? The study identifies more sources of the tragic consequences of revolutions than the radical idealism as suggested by Chirot. In contrast with the ideological, structural and individual violence of communist revolutions shaped by Marxist conception the study explores the value of Thoreauvian’s heuristic for the achievement of peaceful, non‑violent revolutionary changes. Self‑reliance i is assumed to be a vital engine of peaceful revolutionary changes.
