Opis:
Social segregation is a subject common in contemporary studies of metropolitan areas. Until recently, studies of segregation focused on the distribution of ethnic groups, immigrants, and the poor. Today, they also cover additional indicators such as demographic properties, education, and affiliation with social and professional categories, which can also serve to determine the causes of the segregation (including the selfsegregation of the rich). This article aims to point out the measures of segregation that present the segregation levels in the most complete manner, along with their application in the context of three European metropolitan areas: Warsaw, Berlin, and Paris. The first part of the article is a review of the existing approaches to segregation measures, followed by the selection of research method, presentation of the analysis' results, and evaluation of the applied methods; presenting the opportunities and limitations in research of the social segregation phenomenon.

Opis:
Warsaw and its metropolitan area seem an interesting testing ground for research on the phenomenon of residential segregation in the context of the evolution of housing policy, since the city has been subject to significant changes as a result of historical events. Each of these contributed to alterations in the level and the character of residential segregation. The goal of this article is to answer the following question: Was the changing housing policy in Warsaw and the surrounding metropolitan area during the transformation period and afterwards accompanied by a modification of the segregation structure and what differences can be noticed in the whole of the metropolitan area and in the city itself?

Although the socio-spatial aspect of cities in the globalisation era has gained a new dimension, it cannot be explained by the globalisation process alone. The article presents the problem of social and ethnic segregation in Île-de-France between 1999 and 2009. Socio-economic and demographic data are used to measure indices of segregation and the description of characteristic chosen districts to show its spatial inertia. The analysis revealed a higher degree of social segregation in the entire Paris metropolitan region than in the city of Paris itself. The upper class is the most segregated group, followed by foreigners, immigrants and the lower class. The pattern emphasises the important role of autosegregation factors and functions. It is observed that a constant division into homogenous parts exists in the prestigious and affluent western districts and the impoverished immigrant north-eastern districts. Socio-spatial tendencies reveal the growing importance of the upper class.

The aim of this article is to answer two questions concerning the scale and the pattern of residential segregation in Warsaw at the local level and the character of contemporary processes accompanying and modifying this phenomenon. While examining residential segregation we have applied a multidimensional approach to underline the complex nature of this phenomenon. We have focused on data concerning different demographic and socio-economic categories. Furthermore we indicate and describe three socio-spatial, contemporary processes that have accompanied an increase in social inequalities in Warsaw (the creation of enclaves of poverty and wealth and the process of gentrification). The research reveals increasing social inequalities at the local level that began in the socialist era and have strengthened during the transformation period, as well as the stability of the socio-spatial pattern in selected districts that influence their local specifics.

This article presents research results concerning designation of the scope of segregation of elements by analysing the ingot, designated for hot rolling of long products. The research tests were performed under industrial conditions, during continuous casting production cycle of high carbon steels. From cc ingots with square cross-section of 160 mm samples having the length of 400 mm were collected, out of which two samples were cut up, the so-called templates with the thickness of 20 mm. Segregation of elements was determined based on the quantitative analysis of results performed by using spark spectrometry pursuant to PN-H-04045. Changes in concentrations of elements were analysed along the line, which join the opposite sides of the sample in their half length and pass through the geometric centre of the square cross-section. In the further course of the research study, there was also determined the segregation along perpendicular line up to the surface connecting the core of the cross-section with lateral plane. Designations of element contents were performed at points distanced from each other by approx. 10 mm and situated on the lines. There was found segregation of carbon, sulphur and phosphorus.

Over the past few decades, school choice has been a widely debated issue around the globe, following the development of pluralism, liberty, and democracy. In many countries, school choice systems were preceded by residence-based school assignment systems, creating a strong connection between a neighborhood and its schools’ demographic compositions. However, schools often remain highly segregated. School segregation is thus seen as a major problem and is supposedly driven by three main factors: residential segregation, parental school choice, and schools’ selection of pupils. This paper aims to shed light on what research should be focusing on as regards school choice and residential segregation with the following two research questions: What are the links between neighborhood and school choice in the literature? How are neighborhood and school choice connected to school segregation in the literature? Two main findings emerged: (1) the neighborhood-based social networks that parents developed had limited their school choices and (2) neighborhood segregation is one of the most important factors that contributes to school segregation and is related to multi-ethnic and socioeconomic contexts.

The effect of ultrasonic vibration on the microstructure, elimination of casting defects and distribution of alloyed elements at macro-scale during solidification of 35CrMo steel has been investigated. Results show that ultrasonic treatment has a significant effect on the grain refinement, especially the fragmentation of the secondary dendritic arms of the studied steel. Density of the casting defects decreases and the alloyed elements are seen more even distribution at macro-scale with the introduction of ultrasonic vibration. Meanwhile, the ultrasonic vibration works more efficiently in the longitudinal direction than in the radial, and its efficiency declines with the distance from the radiator increasing.

Opis:
INTRODUCTION: In the face of sudden events with many victims, various types of medical segregation systems were created. Their aim is to set the treatment and transport priority of patients by giving them appropriate urgency codes considering their general condition and vital parameters. The study is aimed at comparing the effectiveness of selected medical segregation systems. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The research tool consisted of one hundred virtual patients, whose condition was categorized according to the START system (Simple Triage and Rapid Treatment) for four urgency codes - 25 persons for each of four categories. Then they were segregated by assigning the wounded to individual urgency codes using the SIEVE and CAREFLIGHT systems. To the statistical analysis was used the Mann-Whitney U test. All results were considered significant at p <0.05. RESULTS: Among 100 patients using the SIEVE system, 25 were identified in green and black code, 27 in yellow code and 23 in red code. Using the CAREFLIGHT system, 25 patients were shown in green and black code, 31 in yellow code and 19 in red code. There were no differences between segregation systems between green and black code patients (Code 3 and 4: START = 25 vs. SIEVE = 25 vs. CAREFLIGHT = 25). In contrast, the yellow code showed differences in the SIEVE system compared to the control group - START system (p = 0.005, Code 2: START = 25 vs. SIEVE = 18), which, however, was not demonstrated in relation to CAREFLIGHT (Code 2: START = 25 vs. CAREFLIGHT = 25). In the red code showed differences between the control group and the SIEVE system (p = 0.001, Code 1: START = 25 vs SIEVE = 16), and the CAREFLIGHT system (p = 0.010, Code 1: START = 25 vs. CAREFLIGHT = 19). CONCLUSIONS: The effectiveness of selected medical segregation systems (START, SIEVE and CAREFLIGHT) is significantly different among patients in yellow and red code. Taking into account the highest urgency code, the most sensitive selection is shown by the START system, and the least sensitive - CAREFLIGHT.
Natomiast w kodzie żółtym wykazano różnice systemu SIEVE w stosunku do grupy kontrolnej – systemu START (p=0,005; Kod 2: START = 25 vs. SIEVE = 18), której jednak nie wykazano w stosunku do CAREFLIGHT (Kod 2: START = 25 vs. CAREFLIGHT = 25). Uwzględniając najwyższy kod pilności, najbardziej czułą selekcję wykazuje system START, a najmniej czułą - CAREFLIGHT.

Laura McAtackneyArhuus UniversityDenmark The Many Forms and Meanings of (Peace) Walls in Contemporary Northern Ireland Abstract: Peace walls are a longstanding materialization of the conflict in Northern Ireland, known as the Troubles c.1968-c.1998. The walls have been one of the only security infrastructural forms associated with the violence to have continued and grown into the post-conflict context. They have often been a forgotten materialization of conflict due to their ‘temporary’ nature and their restriction to working-class, urban areas. While there are increasing moves to have these walls removed, or at least to put policies in place to allow them to be taken down in consultation with the communities beside them, there has been little consideration of the long-term impacts on public memory of material segregation. This article uses peace walls in Belfast as a case-study of the unforeseen repercussions of long-term segregation of divided communities. It offers a warning to the current generation of politicians regarding not only the role of what ideological walls are intended to do, but also the impacts they can have that were not intended.  Keywords: Belfast, segregation, peace walls, memorials, gender, victimhood

In general, uniform mixing of particles is desirable in the process of particle handling. However, during the charging of sinter feed and upper ore, size segregation must be induced to prevent heat imbalance, ensure bed permeability, and prevent the loss of fine ore. In this study, upper ore charging was simulated using a discrete element method (DEM) to find the optimal method for controlling particle size segregation, and the segregation characteristics in the upper ore bed were investigated when a deflector plate was applied to the charging machine. The degree of vertical segregation increased when a deflector plate was applied, and it was confirmed that the segregation direction in the upper ore bed can be controlled by adjusting the charging direction of the upper ore by using a deflector plate. In order to apply this method directly to the actual process, further study is needed to understand the influence of the characteristics of the deflector plate such as length and angle.

Genetical analyses were conducted to find linkages and the locus of the gene calf on the Pisum chromosome map. The recessive, pleiotropic gene calf (enlarged and undulated leaflets, stipules, flowers and pods, plant sterile), artificially induced (the initial line-Large Podded G-20, the mutagene-DES and NMU) was described by Sharma in 1975. An identical mutant gene at the same locus was isolated in our research (the initial line - cv. Pegro, the mutagene - fast neutrons). Two lines were included in the Pisum gene bank - the type line for the gene calf - Wt 15873 and the representative line - Wt 16024. In linkage studies the representative line was crossed with tester lines bearing gene markers. Analyses of dihybrid segregation in F₂ generations revealed linkages of the gene calf with chromosome 2 markers. Two isozymic markers helped to reveal the calf locus on chromosome 2 with the following gene order: Orp - Calf - K - Pgm-p - Fum. This is in agreement with the current Pisum linkage map.

The roots that raised Elvis Presley to become the man that he is in history, are not found in rock’n’roll but they go much deeper. They are found in the Gospel, in what Joe Moscheo defined as “the Gospel side of Elvis”. This paper highlights the gospel music of Elvis Presley and its vast impact on American society and religion. One of the aims of this article is to underline the impact that sacred music had over Presley’s artistical work and how Elvis and his Southern spirituality influenced the history of Christian music. One more important aspect of this paper argues the worldwide role Presley had as an evangelist of the Gospel, and how he influenced Christian identity and its values among Americans. This paper tried to answer to Mark Duffet’s question: “If star musicians are positioned as centers of attention, what happens when they use their privileged position in the spotlight to offer a ‘spiritual’ message?”. As a result, this paper offers original contents of Elvis Presley’s faith and spirituality and is intended as a starting point for future studies. Surprisingly, few researchers have evaluated the effect the singer had on evangelization and gospel music development. Previous studies have mostly paid attention to the role that Elvis played on the Rock’n’Roll scene and the iconic legend created around him. They forget that the Gospel is a key part of Presley’s life and music.
