Opis:
The article is related to the growth of young companies operating in the business services for firms sector, that are listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange alternative market – NewConnect. The growth opportunity models are introduced to explain the growth process of these companies together with other controlling factors such as profitability, size of the company and its earnings. As the result of the research it is found that growth potential is negatively correlated with assets and equity growth in short term, but it affects positively earnings per share growth in a longer, three-year period. It can therefore be concluded that in the sector taken into consideration, investors’ decisions reflected in the growth potential measures may be translated into company’s value growth only in a longer term.

Opis:
In this paper the authors intend to examine the innovation performance of the Hungarian firms before and following the period of the global financial crisis and economic downturn. Contrary to the mainstream approach non-technological innovation, more precisely workplace innovation is put into the focus of the analysis. The authors argue that this is a neglected dimension of firms’ innovation activities which may become an important source of competitiveness at company level and thus it deserves more attention. The analysis of empirical data of the various waves of the European Community Innovation Survey (CIS) on non-technological innovation shows that the innovation performance of the Hungarian firms is declining. The authors complement this statistical analysis with the results of the European Working Conditions Survey demonstrating that there are significant differences in the innovation performance of such country groups as the EU-27, the Nordic and the Post-Socialist countries. Beside the country-specific comparison, the authors evaluate the performance of the Hungarian and Slovakian knowledge-intensive business service sector identified as a driver playing a “benchmark” role in speeding up workplace innovations. Finally, some key lessons are drawn indicating the need for a map on the distribution of different work organization forms in order to better understand the companies’ innovation activity and skill requirements.

Opis:
The objective of this study is to investigate the level of understanding of blockchain technology for businesses in the service sector and the level of impact of blockchain technology on business operations in the service sector, with the further aim of recommending readiness planning for the impact of blockchain technology on business operations in the service sector. The outcome of the study revealed that participants perceived the overall level of impact of blockchain technology on business operations in the service sector to be at mid-level. However, almost half of the participants were unsure about the level of impact of blockchain technology on business operations in the service sector. The issue about which most participants were uncertain was if the application of blockchain technology in businesses in the service sector could facilitate their work or coordination with suppliers. 58.40% of participants were unsure about this issue. Furthermore, the outcome of the study showed that understanding blockchain technology influenced the impact of blockchain technology on business operations in the service sector and could forecast 61.4% of the impact. As for readiness planning for the impact of blockchain technology on business operations in the service sector, it can be recommended that operators prepare their personnel and human resources, both in terms of numbers and capacity, to respond to changing trends in the market as well as basic understanding about blockchain technology. Operators should also prepare their business infrastructure by setting up a system to develop blockchain technology for management work within their organizations.

This paper analyses the difference in the CSR commitment between different types of banks, based on the German example. It compares the three traditional groups (Commercial, Cooperative and Savings Banks) and a new type of bank which emerged in the 1980s: ethical banks. For each of these four types of financial institution, the main objective is to see if there is a difference between what the banks declare (through analysis of CSR policies in their annual reports) and what the banks actually do (through analysis of their financial statements). The conclusion is that a sincere commitment to CSR involves a substantial change in the banks business model. An analysis of the banking industry shows that only a few institutions are ready to take a step forward in this direction.

The global financial crisis of 2008 highlighted the riskiness of the pre-crisis bank model and demonstrated that in many cases the benefits of diversification from traditional banking have been overstated. With countless cases of nationalization or forced takeovers of failing banks, questions have been raised as to the proper size and scope of banking activities. Retail banking carried out by locally-based, small institutions, such as credit unions, mutual savings banks, building societies or cooperative banks, has for years played an important role in local environments, enhancing bank reputation and trust. The financial crisis has highlighted the advantages of alternative business models of banks, aimed not only at maximizing short-term profits but also at the fulfillment of some social objectives; thus the aim of the paper is to analyze the position and challenges for the cooperative banking sector, based on the Polish experience

Opis:
Big cities of Poland have been chosen as investment locations by many companies operating in business sector services. The relatively low cost of skilled labour seems to be their main advantage in this field. However, Polish destinations do not have the absolute labour cost advantage over many other locations, especially those in Asia. Therefore, attracting more demanding advanced business processes becomes a chal- lenge to Polish cities today. Thus, the aim of the paper is to assess the potential of these cities in attracting more advanced business processes, which include, among others, R&D. To attain this goal, synthetic measure based on Hellwig’s development pattern was created. The variables used are rooted in the findings from the review of the literature. The results show that the biggest academic city areas of Poland offer the greatest potential to attract advanced business services.
Aby osiągnąć ten cel, opracowano syntetyczny wskaźnik oceny potencjału analizowanych miast w oparciu o metodę wzorca rozwoju Hellwiga, a użyte zmienne zostały dobrane w oparciu o studia literatury. Wyniki wskazują na przewagę największych ośrodków akademickich w zakresie potencjału przyciągania zaawansowanych usług biznesowych.

Opis:
Abstract: Aim: This paper investigates how a framework for analysing business sectors in emerging markets looks like when taking into account the local context-dependent and general factors of The Bottom-of-the-Pyramid (BoP). The BoP segment in emerging markets represents a major growth potential for firms, including multinational enterprises (MNEs) from developed countries. However, the continued lack of success of MNEs in these markets has shown that generic one-size-fits-all strategies for the BoP are not appropriate as BoP contexts differ between countries. Design / Research methods: The sample that was selected for the research includes two non-governmental organizations (NGOs) related to the BoP and eight managers at MNEs with activities in the BoP have been interviewed in a semi-structured manner to collect rich data. Conclusion / findings: By interviewing eight managers at MNEs with activities in the BoP and two NGOs related to the BoP, an additional analysis, BoP-orientation, and further extensions to the original analyses are being presented. This results in an advanced framework for analysing business sectors in emerging markets. Originality / value of the article: Current frameworks for analysing business sectors in emerging markets do take into account inter-country differences but fail to recognize intra-country differences, which causes them to fall short on their applicability to the BoP. This paper fills the gap how frameworks for analysing business sectors in emerging markets can be made applicable for the BoP by taking into account both the local context-dependent and general factors of a BoP-market to analyse it for opportunities, threats, and eventually and strategic entry mode.

W części empirycznej czynniki te zostały poddane analizie metodą deskryptywną w odniesieniu do badanych krajów. Pozwoliło to na wyciągnięcie wniosków dotyczących Polski. Do pewnego stopnia, Polska posiada niektóre pozytywne cechy zarówno Indii, jak i Irlandii. Tłumaczy to duży współcześnie napływ inwestycji z branży usługowej do Polski.
The fast growth of the service sector is one of the characteristic features of the contemporary economy. Amongst other CEE countries, Poland is one of the emerging locations for this sector. The aim of the paper is to examine and compare the business service sector in India, Ireland and Poland. Both India and Ireland are exceptional locations for this industry, so comparing the state and operating conditions in Poland with those countries can be insightful. A literature study is used to determine the motives of companies undertaking offshore investments, upon which a selection of location factors is made. In the empirical part, those factors are analyzed in a descriptive way. This allows us to draw conclusions concerning this sector in Poland. This country, to some extent, possesses selected positive features of both India and Ireland, which explains the current growth of the sector.

Opis:
The article is an attempt at addressing the question of the Prussian State’s involvement in the economy during the interwar period, as it was first one of the constituent states of the Weimar Republic and then a part of the Third Reich. After the First World War, the economic and social problems of Prussia resulted from the general difficult situation of Germany. However, Prussia in particular suffered serious territorial losses in the east of the country. Many petitions and requests demanding the state’s active involvement in solving economic and socio-demographic problems were addressed to the Prussian government. A very important premise for this involvement was the political motivation and willingness to solve the ongoing problems indicated by the economic sector and local administration. The investment of the state’s financial resources into the Port of Szczecin and the establishment of the Port Community of Szczecin was conditioned, on the one hand, by the failure of negotiations with the City-State of Hamburg to establish a similar port community. On the other hand, it stressed the importance that the Port of Szczecin acquired during the First World War. As a result of the Prussian State’s involvement, investments of at least several million marks worth were made in the port. The change in the form of cooperation between the state and the City of Szczecin in terms of managing the port, which took place in 1929, led to the creation of the Port Company in Szczecin. Nevertheless, it should be noted that the amount of funds that the Prussian State allocated to the Port of Szczecin was limited. During the Nazi period, some more costly investment projects in the Port of Szczecin were drafted but they were never implemented.

Research background: Improving business conditions and SME development are signs of a country's macroeconomic stability. The issue of identifying and removing barriers to the development of firms in the SME segment is a priority in all countries with developed economies and its importance is currently increasing. Purpose of the article: The main aim of this paper is to explore possible differences in entrepreneurs' perception of the business environment based on the industry in which the company operates. The analysis contains also a national view, where a comparison between the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic is performed. Methods: Correspondence analysis was used to achieve the research objectives in order to examine the relations between the categorical variables. Its application is beneficial in cases where the graphic output is clearer than the numerical one. Findings & Value added: The presented research makes it possible to identify problematic aspects of doing business in each sector and to create support mechanisms for the creation of effective structural policies. Entrepreneurs from the Czech Republic's Production and Transport sectors agree with the statement that the business environment in the country is suitable for starting a business. As for business environment's suitability for doing business, neither Slovak nor Czech entrepreneurs sector-wide agreed with the given statement. Czech entrepreneurs from the Services, Trade and Construction sectors, respectively, agree, fully agree with the statement that the business environment in the country is reasonably risky and allows for doing business. In the case of entrepreneurs from Slovakia, no significant correspondence is observed. Findings regarding the statement that the business conditions in the country have improved over the past five years are the following: In the Czech Republic, there is a perfect correspondence of the Transport sector and the agreement with the given statement. In the Slovak Republic, agreement was found with the given statement in the Transport sector and neutral position in the Production sector.

Objectives This study focuses on analyzing the impact of innovative human resource management practices (IHRMP) on knowledge worker burnout, and how organizational support and employee effort help explain this relationship in the context of the business services sector. To explore the problem, investigated whether IHRMP have a significant negative impact on employee burnout, and organizational support and employee effort mediate the negative impact of IHRMP on employee burnout. Material and Methods A survey was conducted, collected using the computer assisted web interview method on 1000 knowledge workers employed at business services sector (BSS) organizations in Poland. The quantitative results obtained were analyzed using AMOS software to test the main statistical relationships and through structural equation modeling. Results The study outlines direct and indirect mechanisms to counteract perceived burnout among knowledge workers. The article contributes to the understanding of how IHRMP reduce burnout among knowledge workers and highlights the central importance of organizational support and employee effort as mediating factors against burnout in the context of high-skill, high-intensity work. Conclusions The expected results in terms of application provide a proposal of measures for managers’ consideration that can be implemented in the organization with a view to counteracting the incidence of burnout among BSS employees.

The purpose of this work is to characterise the cooperative bank sector’s strengths, weaknesses, chances and threats identified by its representatives in Poland, as well as to determine desirable changes in the organisation and functioning of cooperative banks. In analytical terms, the assessments and conclusions were based on presentations and panel discussions of participants of the Forum of Cooperative Bank Leaders, which was held in Warsaw on 17–18 September 2019. It was concluded on the basis of the analysis that although cooperative banks are aware of their weaknesses and strengths as well as they see chances and threats for their operations, they clearly lack consensus on the shape and joint actions in the scope of the development of a new business model. The greatest expectations of these banks are connected with the development of electronic economy and digitisation, which requires considerable financial outlays and organisational effort. The key problem is the insufficient level of integration and cooperation within associations functioning and among them, as well as lack of willingness – even reluctance – of many banks to change the existing model. Greater integration of all entities in the cooperative bank sector is the necessary condition for the improvement of banks’ operations and their further development.

This paper investigates the relevance of banking- sector- specific and macroeconomic determinants of profitability of 21 banking sectors over the years 1995-2009. In the analysis we apply the Arellano and Bond GMM-estimator to aggregated data collected in a harmonized way by the OECD, to find out whether banking-sector-specific and macroeconomic determinants which significantly affect the efficiency of individual banks, are also of great importance to the profitability (proxied by ROA and ROE ratios) of banking sectors. Our results suggest that banking-sector-specific determinants affect the efficiency of banks in the anticipated way. Macroeconomic variables have a statistically-significant impact on both ROA and ROE. The sensitivity of efficiency to both groups of determinants depends on institutional and political criteria.

This paper is focused on informal relations between state authorities and business, which exist in a peculiar Belarusian economic system, where the competition remains restricted, and the public sector based on large companies continues to play a crucial role. The author argues that the Belarusian public authorities have developed a broad set of informal rules which allow them to extract resources from small and medium private enterprises (SMEs) and control the expansion of the private sector He also argues that as long as informal extractive institutions designed and maintained by the state remain in place, the improvement of formal business regulations alone will not produce the expansion of the SME sector In author's opinion, an extra-legal extraction of funds and informal discrimination against small and medium private enterprises are embedded in the logic of the centrally planned economy, which Belarus has preserved after the fall of the Soviet Union. This dissertation may also help to understand how SMEs operate in many other economies of the post-Soviet area and what obstacles to the development they face.
