Opis:
When faced with missing data in a statistical survey or administrative sources, imputation is frequently used in order to fill the gaps and reduce the major part of bias that can affect aggregated estimates as a consequence of these gaps. This paper presents research on the efficiency of model-based imputation in business statistics, where the explanatory variable is a complex measure constructed by taxonomic methods. The proposed approach involves selecting explanatory variables that fit best in terms of variation and correlation from a set of possible explanatory variables for imputed information, and then replacing them with a single complex measure (meta-feature) exploiting their whole informational potential. This meta-feature is constructed as a function of a median distance of given objects from the benchmark of development. A simulation study and empirical study were used to verify the efficiency of the proposed approach. The paper also presents five types of similar techniques: ratio imputation, regression imputation, regression imputation with iteration, predictive mean matching and the propensity score method. The second study presented in the paper involved a simulation of missing data using IT business data from the California State University in Los Angeles, USA. The results show that models with a strong dependence on functional form assumptions can be improved by using a complex measure to summarize the predictor variables rather than the variables themselves (raw or normalized).

Opis:
The paper demonstrates the usefulness of the Risk Score method for risk management at professional grinding stations, taking into account the nature of the station's operations. The adoption of consistent processes within a comprehensive framework helps to ensure that risk is managed efectively, eficiently and coherently across the organization. The approach described in this paper introduces the principles and guidelines for managing safety risk in an orderly, transparent and credible manner. The aim of the present study is to reduce occupational hazard at grinding stations.

Opis:
The work presents the assessment of occupational risk using the Risk Score method for the position of a policeman from the Patrol and Intervention Link. A policeman in this position often works in conditions that are not only hazardous to health, but also to life. It patrols streets, buildings, etc. and participates in many interventions. Therefore, it seems important to raise the topic of occupational risk in such a position. By assessing occupational risk using the Risk Score method, threats were identified with the highest risk and activities that may reduce this risk have been indicated.

Opis:
The article describes three interlaboratory experiments concerning 222Rn determination in water samples. The first two experiments were carried out with the use of artificial radon waters prepared by the Laboratory of Radiometric Expertise (LER), Institute of Nuclear Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences in Kraków in 2014 and 2018. The third experiment was performed using natural environment waters collected in the vicinity of the former uranium mine in Kowary in 2016. Most of the institutions performing radon in water measurements in Poland were gathered in the Polish Radon Centre Network, and they participated in the experiments. The goal of these exercises was to evaluate different measurement techniques used routinely in Polish laboratories and the laboratories’ proficiency of radon in water measurements. In the experiment performed in 2018, the reference values of 222Rn concentration in water were calculated based on the method developed at LER. The participants’ results appeared to be worse for low radon concentration than for high radon concentrations. The conclusions drawn on that base indicated the weaknesses of the used methods and probably the sampling. The interlaboratory experiments, in term, can help to improve the participants’ skills and reliability of their results.

Opis:
Workers in labor-intensive units, in general, maximize their earnings by subjecting themselves to high risk of occupational health hazards (RoOHH) due to economic reasons. We present an intelligent system integrating artificial neural network (ANN) and evolutionary multiobjective optimisation (EMO) to tackle this problem, which has received scant attention in the literature. A brick manufacturing unit in India is chosen as case study to demonstrate the working of proposed system. Firing is assessed to be the most severe job among others using an interview method. A job-combination approach is devised which allows firing workers to perform another job (loading/covering/molding) along with firing. The second job not only reduces their exposure to high temperature zone but also helps to compensate for reduced earnings. RoOHH is measured using a risk assessment score (RAS). ANN models the psychological responses of workers in terms of RAS, and facilitates the evaluation of a fitness function of EMO. EMO searches for optimal work schedules in a job-combination to minimize RAS and maximize earnings simultaneously. 1 Introduction Brick manufacturing (BM) in India is labor intensive and comprises the following major jobs − molding the raw bricks, loading molded bricks to kiln using a pushcart or a pony-cart, stacking molded bricks into the kiln in a particular way, spreading clay sand over the stacks uniformly for superior baking of bricks, firing the kiln that includes pouring the coal into the kiln from the covered holes at the top of the kiln at required intervals and monitoring the fire, and finally unloading the baked bricks from the kiln; we term these processes respectively as molding, loading, stacking, covering, firing and unloading, for ready references in this paper.

Opis:
The FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) method consists in analysis of failure modes and evaluation of their effects based on determination of cause-effect relationships for formation of possible product or process defects. Identified irregularities which occur during the production process of piston castings for internal combustion engines were ordered according to their failure rates, and using Pareto-Lorenz analysis, their per cent and cumulated shares were determined. The assessments of risk of defects occurrence and their causes were carried out in ten-point scale of integers, while taking three following criteria into account: significance of effects of the defect occurrence (LPZ), defect occurrence probability (LPW) and detectability of the defect found (LPO). A product of these quantities constituted the risk score index connected with a failure occurrence (a so-called “priority number,” LPR). Based on the observations of the piston casting process and on the knowledge of production supervisors, a set of corrective actions was developed and the FMEA was carried out again. It was shown that the proposed improvements reduce the risk of occurrence of process failures significantly, translating into a decrease in defects and irregularities during the production of piston castings for internal combustion engines.
