A set of geophysical methods were implemented in the research conducted on permafrost of the Tatra Mountains and the Abisko area, Northern Sweden. Results of geophysical surveys show evidence of permafrost in both areas. Comparative studies on the occurrence of permafrost in the Tatras and in the Abisko area indicate that contemporary active as well as fossil permafrost might occur in both locations. Results of the electric resistivity, electromagnetic, shallow refraction seismic, and ground penetrating radar methods reveal similar results and might be successfully used in indirect research on permafrost in the mountainous regions.

The Nordic Dimension of Energy Security aims to problematize the narrow conceptualization, contextualization and fossil fuel-based practices of energy security in the context of climate security. Energy has a key role in political, economic, social, cultural, environmental, ontological and climate security issues. The connection between energy and security contains various concepts, contexts and affects the civilizational development of human societies. The author demonstrates that the Nordic states pursue sustainable energy security policies and energy cooperation strategies with the Baltic states and European Union member states, while actively engaged in peace building activities. In this regard, the Nordic states have been evaluated as reference role models to remedy the narrow and traditional energy security approaches and to internalize renewable energy sources.

Opis:
Ground penetrating radar (GPR) surveys were conducted on both the glaciers and their forefields in the Tatra Mountains, Northern Scandinavia and on Spitsbergen – between the 49 degrees and 77 degrees latitudes. The results show that the glacial and periglacial environments interpenetrate. Permafrost is present in the glacier, and glacial ice may occur in the periglacial environment. What is common for both the environments is the perennial melting point surface, with the temperature close to 0°C. In the glacier it is the boundary of the cold-temperate transition surface and on the forefield – permafrost base.

Opis:
In the drama Close City, first published in 2005, Lithuanian playwright Marius Ivaškevičius focuses on the (im)possible connections between Malmö and Copenhagen. The initially realistic setting of a failing marriage in the spirit of August Strindberg and Ingmar Bergman evolves gradually into an absurd spectacle that explores spatial and intertextual interstices. This article investigates how the drama, as a scenic kaleidoscope, elaborates on the influence of imagined geographies in the Baltic Sea region, discusses (gendered) power relations, and questions Scandinavian exceptionalism.

Opis:
This article presents an overview of the literature regarding colonialism in the Nordic countries. Although the Nordic region is not commonly associated with colonialism, a critical look at its direct and indirect involvement in the process of European expansion has recently been developed in scholarship on the region. Direct involvement refers to the control of overseas territories (e.g. in India, modern day Ghana, and the Caribbean) and active participation in the networks of trade (including slave trade), shipping, missionary activity, etc. Indirect involvement, or colonial complicity, refers to the idea that Nordic societies produced and reproduced systems of knowledge that underpinned the colonial system and the global racial hierarchies.

Opis:
In late capitalism, class is increasingly made on the move, not in static locations, as different forms of mobility resonate with the making of class in different ways. Poles are the leading European nation who move abroad. However, what the transnationalization of class means for the Polish workforce in the context of diversified employment and mobility regimes has remained underexplored to date. In this article transnational mobility is seen as enacted under the employment umbrella of transnational subcontractors and staffing agencies for short-term contracts abroad. The author focuses on Poles who work in the construction industry and shipyards and explores how transnational contract work conditions workers’class relations and experiences, with the aim of grasping the collective and individual experience of working and living “on a contract” and how this affects their situation in Poland. The article shows that what in most research appears as a working-class mobility populated by low-skilled and vulnerable Polish migrants emerges on the ground as far more heterogeneous and dynamic, marked by a common transnational subjugation as well as inner class hierarchies and antagonism. The argumentation draws on a multi-sited fieldwork conducted in Finland, Denmark, Norway and Poland in 2014–2017.

Opis:
This paper seeks to provide a new contribution to the debates on Viking Age women by focusing on a rather controversial notion of ‘female warriors’. The core of the article comprises a preliminary survey of archaeological evidence for female graves with weapons (axes, spears, swords and arrowheads) from Viking Age Scandinavia. Attention is focused not only on the types of weapons deposited with the deceased, but first and foremost on the meanings which similar practices may have had for the past societies. The author discusses why, where and how the weapons were placed in female graves and attempts to trace some patterns in this unusual funerary behaviour. In addition to exploring the funerary evidence, the iconographic representations of what could be regarded as ‘female warriors’ are also briefly considered. Lastly, a few remarks are also made on the notion of armed women in the textual sources

Opis:
In recent decades, a wide range of Scandinavian crime novels have conquered Hungarian readers, providing a more sophisticated perspective on the existing image of Scandinavian cultures and societies, with their intriguing social content and appealing landscapes. This wave of crime fiction has not only contributed to a better understanding of Scandinavia, but also drawn attention to the genre itself, which culminated in a parody written by a Hungarian stand-up comedian, Zoltán Kőhalmi. In his incorporation of all the obligatory ingredients of Scandinavian crime novels, the comedian not only reuses the self-image that Scandinavian crime narratives convey, he pillories the genre requirements by exaggerating the use of the most well-known characteristics. The analysis of Kőhalmi’s satirical use of Scandinavian crime narratives serves as a case study for a closer understanding of conceptions of Scandinavia in contemporary Hungary.

On several occasions during the 20th c. archaeological finds were brought to light at Gaarz. A great part of the finds from this site in Ostholstein (Germany) hints at a Slavic settlement there. During surveys with the metal detector from the year 2012 onwards, a steadily growing mass of metal finds was uncovered. Some of these are of high quality and attest to wealth which exceeds the scope of merely rural settlements. In this paper some of the archaeological material is presented and the function of this “new” site in the vicinity of the central place of Starigard/Oldenburg is discussed.

Opis:
The article deals with representations of Scandinavia in Polish literature from the 1980s to the second decade of the 21st century. The basic claim of the article is that a shift in the Polish imagination from the West to the North has occurred through literature and growing public interest. This shift began with efforts to transform the initial stereotype of Scandinavia as a land of prosperity. In subsequent stages, the imaginary was expanded by literature to include the themes of equality, social trust and self-correcting modernity. Complicating the image of Scandinavia made it into a viable alternative to Western modernity.

Opis:
This co-written article approaches the influential Lithuanian writer and playwright Marius Ivaškevičius’s essay series My Scandinavia (2004) from two different vantage points reflecting either side of the former ‘Iron Curtain’. Published in the year when Lithuania joined the European Union, the essay series describes the narrator’s travels and symbolic and ironic conquest of Northern Europe in the wake of the border openings following the collapse of the Soviet Union. First, employing the notions of “temporal” and “spatial nodes” (Ringgard & DuBois 2017), the article addresses how the crossings of the Baltic Sea and journeys through Northern Europe depicted in Ivaškevičius’s essays represent an awareness of significant shifts in the unfolding of European history and Europe’s spatial configuration. Second, the article reads My Scandinavia as an example of creative map-making in line with theories of critical cartography. Finally, the article puts the travelling subject in My Scandinavia centre stage, looking at the dialectic ways in which subject and place create each other. Just as Scandinavia has been actively moulding the narrating and, by implication, also the writing subject’s biography, so has he given Scandinavia shape through his discourse, while also idiosyncratically framing Europe’s shifting political and mental geography.

Contrary to modern view of the runes as symbols and bearers of pagan traditions, the mediaeval runic inscriptions found in Scandinavia bear witness of making use of the indigenous alphabet to serve the new religion, Christianity. In this paper a number of inscriptions are analyzed with respect to the prayer formula that typically is a part of a text commemorating the dead. Different runic masters are found to have been more or less theologically educated in the tenets of the new religion. The prayer formulas show a changing society, reorienting from the pagan traditions towards the christian ones.
