Opis:
Analysis of a riveted lap joint, the part of M-28 Skytruck fuselage, is presented. The aim of the paper is a proper choice of finite element mesh parameters (shape and density) around the rivet hole as well as a study of the influence of different sheets thickness on secondary bending. Riveting still remains the most popular method of joining metal and composite parts of the aircraft structure. During the operation (service) the severe stress concentrations and the effects such as fretting and secondary bending occur, thus reducing fatigue life. The specimen consists of two thin sheets (0.6 and 1.2 mm thick) stiffened with a 3 mm thick frame. The parts are connected by 14 rivets (3.5 mm diameter) and 8 rivets (3 mm diameter). Overall specimen dimensions are following: length 682 mm, width 136 mm, rivets pitch 17 mm. The riveted joint is subjected to a tensile load. The analysis of large parts of structures like fuselages, wings or multi-row riveted specimens can be performed using global shell models. The correct stress state in global modelling can be obtained by taking into consideration the hole in the sheet, the rivet axis (as a rigid or beam element) and contact elements between the rivet and the hole as well as between the sheets. Deformation of the joint and stress state are calculated. Large difference between sheets thickness causes non-physical deformation of the rivet cross sections. Proper deformations of the joint are obtained by increasing stiffness of those sections in a thinner sheet. Results are compared with an experimental investigation and applied to estimations of specimen fatigue life.

Opis:
This paper presents results of numerical static and fatigue calculations as well as experimental investigations of the lap blind riveted joint. The first port of this study is concerned with numerical analysis of phenomena occurring in the process of blind riveting. In the results of nonlinear computation performed for a joint with one rivet, the initial stress distribution, plot of the riveting force in function of the rivet core displacement and plastic strain distribution were obtained. In the next step, the riveted joint with a defined initial stress state was subjected to shear. The analysis was additionally made for a few models with different numbers of finite elements. The obtained numerical results: load-displacement characteristics and the limiting load capacity for the considered riveted joint were validated in experimental investigation. The next part of the paper presents results of numerical fatigue analysis performed for a riveted joint loaded by a cyclic force. In that computation, the number of cycles to total damage of main joint components was estimated.
Praca przedstawia wyniki obliczeń numerycznych oraz badań ekperymentalnych dotyczących zakładkowego połączenia nitowego z wykorzystaniem tzw. nitów zrywalnych. W pracy dokonano analizy procesu zakuwania nita oraz wyznaczono wielkość naprężeń wstępnych powstających w procesie zakuwania. Następnie analizowano procesy zachodzące w trakcie ścinania połączenia (z uwzględnieniem naprężeń wstępnych powstałych w procesie nitowania). Uzyskano szereg wyników, m.in. numeryczną charakterystykę ścinania połączenia nitowego oraz zależność nośności granicznej w funkcji liczby elementów modelu. Uzyskane wyniki zostały następnie zweryfikowane eksperymantalnie. W ostatniej części pracy analizowano na drodze numerycznej wpływ wielkości obciążenia zmiennego na trwałość zmęczeniową połączenia nitowego.

Opis:
Riveting is a traditional, but still popular (particularly in aviation) method of joining metal and composite elements. The residual stress and plastic strain states occur in the joint after the riveting process. The total stress aperienced by the material at a given location within a component depends on the residual and applied stress. Residual post-riveting stress fields are widely accepted to have a significant influence on the fatigue life of aircraft structures. The single lap riveted joint consisting of two sheets and three rows of rivets are analysed. Two specimens are taken into consideration: sheet width and pitch distance are equal to 10.5 mm and rivet diameter is equal to 3.5 mm in the former case whereas 25 mm wide sheets and 5 mm rivet diameter are used in the later case. Distance between rivets (pitch length) and sheet width are equal to 3 or 5 rivet diameters. Materials used in riveted joints are subjected to plastic deformation. The rivet (PA24) and the sheet (2024T3) aluminium alloys are described using piecewise linear material models. The yield stress for the multiaxial state is calculated using the von Mises yield criterion. The paper deals with analysis of the pitch length and sheet thickness influence on stress fields. Stress concentrations around the holes in the rivet row and its distribution between rows are calculated. Models with and without residual stresses are taken into consideration. Local change of the sheet thickness causes a decrease in secondary bending of the joint. This is a result of a small increase in bending between the rivet rows and a simultaneous decrease in maximum bending stress values.

The paper deals with the analysis of deformation of a rivet hole in a riveted joint after the manual dynamic riveting process. For many years, riveting remains a traditional and the most popular method ofjoining in aircraft structures. The residual stress and strain state appear at the rivet hole after the riveting process, which improves the joint's fatigue behaviour. The local finite element models are made with Patran. The rivet and sheets are described using eight-noded, three-dimensional brick elements. The riveting tools consist of four-noded, two-dimensional shell elements. Numerical FE simulations of the upsetting process are carried out using the Ls-Dyna code. The contact with friction is defined between the collaborating parts of the specimen. The results of simulations of the dynamic riveting process of a mushroom rivet with and without a compensator are compared in this paper. Hole deformation of the upper and lower sheet, squeezing force, as well as deformations of the rivet head are analysed. The influence of the compensator on strain and displacement states is studied. Simulation shows that some technological factors may have positive influence on the residual stress fields. Using the rivet with a compensator results in a better rivet hole filling capability. The rivet hole displacement in upper and lower sheets are at the same level. Paper also present manual dynamic riveting process of reverse and standard riveting procedure and model of riveted specimen.

The riveted joints are critical areas of the aircraft structure. The residual stress and strain state appears at the rivet hole after the riveting process and improves fatigue behaviour of the joint. Numerical FE simulations of the upsetting process are carried out using the MARC code. Three-dimensional numerical models are used to determine the resulting stress and strain fields at the countersunk rivet and around the hole. The contact with friction is defined between the mating parts of the joint. Calculations are carried out in an elastic-plastic range. The influence of the rivet geometry, rivet stiffness and the sheet material model on strain and stress states is studied. Non-destructive testing methods like X-ray diffraction, liquid penetrant inspection and visual detection analysis with a UV lamp are used for validation of numerical results. Comparison between numerical and experimental results gives a satisfactory agreement. Numerical simulations allow investigating the influence of imperfections on the strength of the joint.

Opis:
This article presents results of experimental investigations of the lap blind riveted joint. The main goal of the work is determination of destructive load of the blind riveted joints. The blind rivets were originally used in the aircraft structures where access to both sides of the riveted structure is impossible. Blind rivets are now commonly used in many branches of industry because of their low cost. Moreover, the riveting process is uncomplicated. There are many publications about analysis of strength of solid rivets in the research literature. However, the strength analysis of the blind rivets was rarely undertaken. There is the research gap in the analysis of both the strength and the load capacity of blind riveted joints. The influence of selected geometrical parameters of the joint on the stress distribution and the destructive force was not widely described in literature. The first part of the work presents a review of standards and publications related to stress and strength analysis of blind riveted joints. The next part of the study describes experimental investigations of joints. The examined specimens were made out of AW 2017 aluminum alloy, cut from 1[mm] thick sheet. Investigated blind rivets were made out of aluminum alloy. The lap joint with one rivet and the single row five-rivet joint were investigated. Moreover, the different size of hole chamfer were considered. The experimental tests were performed with the use of Zwick-Roell tension machine. The main results of experimental investigations are ultimate shear load diagrams. The influence of both the hole chamfer and the number of rivets on destructive force and shear diagrams of blind riveted joints were in detail analysed. After shear tests, the fractured rivets were magnified in order to explain the failure phenomenon of blind rivets. In the future research works the obtained results will be used in strength analysis of the blind riveted joints using the finite element method.

The article presents a measurement system for fatigue crack monitoring of riveted joints. A vision method and a computer based image analysis were applied in the system. The mechatronic positioning module enables the monitoring of crack tip during the test with the use of a follow-up system. Thanks to the optical encoders applied in linear actuators and the direct optical measurement on the image, a high measurement resolution of crack length was achieved, less than 10 μm in working distance up to 300 mm. The modular load-bearing structure enables a double-sided assembly of the system on a fatigue machine. The developed system was implemented in a fatigue research laboratory.

The aim of the paper is to validate the use of measurement methods in the study of GFRP joints. A number of tests were carried out by means of a tensile machine. The studies were concerned with rivet connection of composite materials. One performed two series of tests for two different forces and two fibre orientations. Using Finite Element Method (FEM) and Digital Image Correlation (DIC), strain maps in the test samples were defined. The results obtained with both methods were analysed and compared. The destructive force was analysed and, with the use of a strain gauge, the clamping force in a plane parallel to the annihilated sample was estimated. Destruction processes were evaluated and models of destruction were made for this type of materials taking into account their connections, such as riveting.

Opis:
Presented in this paper are results of an experimental investigation on the rivet flexibility and load transmission in a riveted lap joint representative for the aircraft fuselage. The test specimens consisted of two aluminium alloy Alclad sheets joined with 3 rows of rivets. Two different squeeze forces were applied to install the rivets. Rivet flexibility measurements have been performed under constant amplitude fatigue loading using several methods including two original optical techniques developed by the present authors. The axial tractions in the sheets required to determine the rivet flexibility have been derived from strain gauge measurements. In order to eliminate the effect of secondary bending the strain gauges have been bonded at the same locations on the outside and faying surface of the sheet. The experiments enabled an evaluation of the usefulness of various techniques to determine the rivet flexibility. It was observed that, although the measured flexibility was identical for both end rivet rows, the load transfer through either of these rows was different. Previous experimental results by the present authors suggest that behind the non-symmetrical load transfer distribution through the joint are large differences between the rivet hole expansion in the sheet adjacent to the driven rivet head and the sheet under the manufactured head. It has been concluded that commonly used computation procedures according to which the load transfer is only related to the rivet flexibility may lead to erroneous results.
Porównywanie uzyskanych dzięki nim wyników umożliwiło ocenę użyteczności poszczególnych technik do wyznaczenia podatności nitów. Udział poszczególnych rzędów nitów w przenoszeniu obciążenia określony został na drodze pomiarów tensometrycznych. Celem uwzględnienia zjawiska wtórnego zginania tensometry oporowe mocowane były w rejonie zakładki parami tj. na wewnętrznej i zewnętrznej powierzchni jednej z łączonych blach.

Opis:
The article presents the analysis of the structure of the load capacity of riveted joints. For the four joining systems the lap joint specimens were made and tested in the shearing test. The joints were prepared for the three combinations of the DC01 steel and EN AW- 5754 aluminium alloy sheets with the thickness of 2mm. On the basis of the obtained load-elongation diagram tensile shear test curves, the basic parameters defined in the ISO/DIS 12996 standard were determined. In the case of the conventional riveted joints the maximum load capacity of the joint is determined by the strength of the fastener. For the joints with aluminium-steel blind rivet , the load capacity of the joint was on the strength limit of the rivet tubular part and on the strength limit of the sheet material. The strength of the SSPR joint is determined by the mechanical properties of the material of the joined sheets. From all sheets and rivet specimens arrangements the highest load capacity of the joint was obtained for the DC01 sheet material joints, and the lowest load capacity of the joint was obtained for the EN AW-5754 sheet material joints.
