    Xerothermic grasslands are veritable botanical gems of the Ponidzie region, located in the upland zone of Poland. Most of these exceptional plant communities have been formed as a result of deforestation, in habitats characterized by specific climatic, hydrological and soil conditions. The result of the natural reserve protection of the xerothermic grassland, however, is opposite to the desired result. The survival of the xerothermic grassland depends on the change in the approach to their protection. Xerothermic grasslands are an excellent example of the difficulties with maintaining very valuable, but semi-natural and anthropogenic communities, related to a large extent to traditional, extensive forms of agriculture. Similar problems occur in the case of gladiolus meadows in lower subalpine forest zones or of once-mown molinion meadows in river valleys.

    The present paper describes the current situation of yews in the Cisowy Jar Reserve: number, their state of health, height and diameter structure, and the sex ratio. In the result only 25 yews were found. Their state of health was relatively good, but many yews that grew on very heavily shaded stands were characterized by little height accretion and greater leaf reduction than those growing on more sunny positions. There is no continuity of population. No specimens in the height range between 51-100 cm were found. Sparse seedlings die in first years after appearing. Active human help is necessary to protect and to reconstruct the yew population in the reserve.

    The paper presents new localities of Coleanthus subtilis identifi ed in spring 2012 on the bottoms of two drained ponds in the Ruda Sułowska Complex “Milicz Ponds” Ornithological Reserve in Wielkopolska region. Both ponds showed very numerous fully developed populations of the discussed species. A potential threat of this species extinction exists and therefore its legal protection is necessary.

    The natural population of yew in the Knyazhdvir Nature Reserve was described and its status has been analyzed. It was stated that more than 22 000 specimens of yew grow there and it is the most numerous population of the species in Ukraine. The most important factor for Taxus baccata occurrence there are the presence of calcium carbonate and humidity of the soils. The height and diameter structures of the population indicate that the population is in progress. The largest specimens in 1976 were of 12 m high and of 30 cm dbh. The natural regeneration is satisfactory. The increment of height of the yew was greater in the conditions of less density of the canopy of beech-fir stand under which the species grows.

    The article outlines certain issues regarding land management within protected wildlife areas, such as national parks, nature reserves, landscape protection areas, NATURA 2000 areas, documentation sites, ecological areas, natural and scenic complexes. It discusses the regulations governing the establishment and management of such areas, the restrictions on land use, the principles of their economic use, as well as nature protection aims within the studies of spatial development, at the local and regional level. Ecologically protected areas in Poland represent a significant natural potential with a rich variety of nature forms and compose the structures of the ECONET network or the World Network of Biosphere Reserves. These areas frequently neighbour or surround each other. Sometimes, they are exposed to adverse influences from outside (the industry, the cities, transport), excessive tourism, or fire hazard. The existing restrictions and regulations regarding nature resources management, incorporated into conservation plans drawn up for national and landscape parks, nature reserves, or for other protected areas, become integral elements of local spatial development plans. The owner of a property situated in a transition (buffer) zone or in an protected area can demand this property to be repurchased or exchanged if there exist significant restrictions or difficulties concerning its use. Distinctive management principles are established then for protected areas and objects which safeguards them against misuse.

    The study presents the structure and floristic composition of mixed fir forest at the northern range limit of European silver fir (Abies alba) in Poland. Phytosociological data were collected in the forest reserve “Murowaniec”,which was established to protect mixed forest ecosystems with a large contribution of fir trees. Changes in floristic composition of these coniferous forests in the last 40 years were discussed. Protective measures are suggested in this paper, aiming at conservation of the forest ecosystems of the reserve.

    Nature reserve is a territorial legal form of nature protection. It is established in the form of an act of local law issued by the regional director for environmental protection. In addition, the legal effect of its creation is the introduction of an appropriate legal regime in the form of prohibitions allowed by law and the expropriation of real estate for the public purpose of its creation, which is the protection of unique natural values occurring in its territory.
    Rezerwat przyrody jest obszarową prawną formą ochrony przyrody. Jego utworzenie następuje w formie aktu prawa miejscowego wydanego przez regionalnego dyrektora ochrony środowiska. Ponadto skutkiem prawnym jego utworzenia jest wprowadzenie odpowiedniego reżimu prawnego w formie zakazów ustawowo dozwolonych oraz wywłaszczenie nieruchomości na cel publiczny jego utworzenia, którym jest ochrona wyróżniających się szczególnych wartości przyrodniczych występujących na jego terenie.

    We performed a detailed overall field survey of all specimens of the wild service tree Sorbus torminalis (L.) Crantz in the research area in the Hádecká planinka National Nature Reserve. This research area, with an area of 80 ha, contains one of the largest populations of the tree in Europe. In all, 1713 specimens were found. This study provides a detailed description of the wild service tree population in the area. The basic biometric parameters (height, GBH, social position, fertility) of thepopulation were assessed. The main emphasis of our analysis was to evaluate the population's age structure. We used estimates of age structure based on the Chapman-Richards growth function to perform this evaluation. During the past twenty years, the natural regeneration of the wild service tree in the nature reserve has decreased considerably. At an experimental plot where a high forest was converted to a coppice with standards, regeneration occurred over 75% of the area. Root suckers were found at the beginning of the observation period. After 2–3 years, generative regeneration occurred.

    W artykule przedstawiono źródła finansowania parków narodowych. Zostało przeanalizowane międzynarodowe doświadczenie w finansowaniu parków narodowych. Została krótko opisana historia parków narodowych w Ukrainie i Polsce. Najczęstsze pytania o parkach narodowych są ujawnione w pracy, a także została przedstawiona ich specyfika w każdym państwie. Główne perspektywy rozwoju systemu obszarów chronionych Ukrainy zostały przedstawione obok innowacyjnych narzędzi ochrony różnorodności biologicznej.
    The main sources of financing of national natural parks have been defined. The foreign experience in financing national parks has been analysed. The paper presents the history of creating national parks in Ukraine and Poland, gives their short characteristics. The common issues are revealed in the work of national natural parks and their specifics in each state. The basic prospects of development of the protected areas in Ukraine have been ordered. The innovative mechanisms for biodiversity conservation tools were expanded. The methodology approaches to the biodiversity conservation in the Ukraine’s national state accounts were developed and they are based on the new calculations of the economic evaluation of the natural ecosystem functioning. This technique is based on the concept of total economic value of ecosystem functioning.
    В статье были определены источники финансирования национальных природных парков. Изучен иностранный опыт финансирования национальных природных парков. Предложены краткие характеристики истории создания национальных парков в Украине и Польше. Общие вопросы функционирования национальных природных парков раскрываются в работе и их специфика в каждом государстве. Определены основные перспективы развития системы природнозаповедных территорий Украины. Определены инновационные инструменты сохранения биоразнообразия.
