Opis:
In order to meet environmental and socio-economic challenges, the recycling of waste tobe used in the treatment of geotechnical problems is one of the main ways of preserving the environment with a lower economic value. The objective of this experimental work is to improve the characteristics and to study the mechanical behaviour of collapsible soil treated with a new hydraulic stabilizer composed of Crushed Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (CGBS) active by Eggshell Waste (CES). The specimens were mixed with stabilizer content, varying from 0 to 15% in mass, with an initial water content of 4, 6 and 8% respectively. in mass. Oedometer apparatus was used to study the addition of new hydraulic stabilizer effect on the Collapse Potential. Triaxial tests are also conducted to determine the shear strength parameters (cohesion and internal friction angle) of this treated soil. The results of this research study show that the mechanical properties of the treated collapsible soil were significantly improved. An appreciable reduction in the collapse potential is observed. The addition of 15% of this new stabilizer with initial water content of 4% under a compaction of 60 blows/ layer is capable of increasing internal friction angle and cohesion. It can be concluded from this study that the mixture of granulated slag and calcined eggshell can be used as an effective treatment of collapsibility phenomenon at low cost while protecting the environment from industrial waste.

The objective to obtain the recommended (at least 50% by weight) level of recycled and reprocessed raw fractions of municipal waste in the perspective of 2020 might in turn contribute to the deterioration of the fuel properties of waste stream that is intended for incineration. In order to avoid oversizing heat recovery plants their con-struction should be based on well-defined properties of the waste fuel. The author carried out simulation calculations of the impact of changes in the composition of municipal waste on their energetic properties. The calculations of the calorific value of the waste fraction (so called combustible fraction) with the potential to be used as an alternative fuel were done.

The article presents the data based on the long-term observations of the Lomonosov mine tailing storage impact on the natural environment. The study of the chemical, mineral and phase composition of waste, sampled at the tailing site, was carried out. It was determined that the ore beneficiation waste in the Lomonosov deposit is generally represented by the minerals of the smectite group. According to the X-ray diffraction analysis data, the beneficiation wastes are a bi-mineral mixture of montmorillonite and talc with pyrophyllite impurities. The wastes of this composition are potentially magnesia raw materials used in the production of construction materials, such as cement, ceramic bricks, etc. Experimental studies have justified the use of the method of wastes recycling based on the roasting of the ore beneficiation tailings, with the number of process options, depending on the temperature regimes and the exposure time.

Aim: All mobile phones will eventually become obsolete and should be collected and recycled in order to recover their high content of both dangerous and valuable materials. End-consumers play a key role in these processes as the collection and recycle systems cannot work properly without their contribution. Therefore, this exploratory study investigates how Dutch end-consumers can be stimulated to return their used mobile phones. Design / Research methods: the factors influencing consumers’ propensity to return and recycle obsolete mobile phones are examined. The results are based on a survey conducted among end-consumers of mobile phones in the Netherlands. Conclusions / findings: There is significant recycling potential as the majority of used mobile phones are simply kept at home. Keeping a used phone as a spare phone and being afraid of privacy disclosures are indicated as main reasons for not taking used phones to a recycling point. Originality / value of the article: The findings indicate that personal satisfaction from recycling and knowledge or awareness of the potential dangers from not properly returning play a crucial role in influencing the propensity.

Efforts that have been done to manage the Hazardous and Toxic waste into non-Hazardous and Toxic waste are done by emptying, shredding, washing, and rinsing at least 3 times and disinfecting using chlorine. This is in accordance with the Indonesian Regulation of Ministry of Health No. 27 of 2017, which has stated that surface cleaning is permitted to use 0.05% chlorine during the process. Furthermore, in the Indonesian Regulation of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry No.56 of 2015, the chemical disinfection process is permitted to use an additional 3–6% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). However, there are still differences in dosage and it has not been mentioned regarding the immersion period during the disinfection process on both of the regulations. The purpose of this study was to determine the difference in contact time and the dose of chlorine as a disinfectant on the number of Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus stearothermophilus in the medical waste recycling process. The research design used in this study was a Randomized Factorial Design with experimental research type. A total of 104 recyclable medical waste samples were taken, using 3 treatments and 6 repetitions. The average temperature of the chlorine solution at the contact time of 15 minutes, 30 minutes, and 45 minutes was 24.34 °C; 24,53 °C; and 24,54 °C respectively, while the average pH of the chlorine solution at the contact time of 15 minutes, 30 minutes, and 45 minutes was 8.344; 8,375; and 8,461 respectively. The results showed that there was no difference in the duration of contact and the dose of chlorine as a disinfectant in the medical waste recycling process with a p-value of 0.377. The percentage reduction in the number of Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus stearothermophilus before and after treatment was 99.99% based on 4 positive controls. The findings in this study were the duration of contact time and the effective dose used in the recycling process of medical waste, which was at a dosage of 0.03% with 45 minutes of contact time. The government needs to conduct a re-assessment regarding the recommended ideal dosage in the surface disinfection process so that it would not cause a potential risk to humans or the environment.

Opis:
Glass fibre reinforced composites are used in many branches of industry. Polyester-glass laminates serve as structural material in shipbuilding (e.g. hulls of units, superstructures), in railways, automotive (e.g. elements of car bodies and interior fittings, roofs of wagons, cisterns) or aviation (e.g. aircraft fuselages, fuel tanks, completion beaks and ballasts). Factors affecting the increase of their use include low specific gravity, optimal strength properties, corrosion resistance. This is associated with a large amount of post-production and post-use waste. The recycling problem of these materials remains unresolved. The article presents the technology of processing polyester-glass waste in order to obtain a recycle with a specific granulation. The selected technology for the production of layered composites with reinforcement in the form of recycle is described. For testing, granulation was selected for 1.2 and 3 mm, as well as content: 0%, 10%, 20% and 30%. Using the water-cutting method, samples were prepared according to the standard static tensile test for plastics. The tests were carried out using a universal testing machine as well as an extensometer for samples with granulation of 1.2 mm and 3 mm, as well as the selected recycled percentage. Obtained results of the research indicated that granulation as well as content affects the strength properties of composites. As the granulation increases, at the same content, the material gains less deformation. The increase in the amount of the recycle reduces the strength properties of the material, and also due to the decrease in the deformation value - the material becomes brittle.

Opis:
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) that contains neodymium magnets (NdFeB) has the potential to serve as a valuable source of elements, including critical ones. These magnets contain Rare Earth Elements (REEs) like Neodymium, Dysprosium, and Praseodymium. A noteworthy method of recycling REEs involves the magnet-to-magnet process, wherein the NdFeB alloy is separated from WEEE and directly reused in the production of new products, specifically new NdFeB magnets. The initial step in this recycling process involves disintegration, a procedure aimed at reducing and segregating the materials within the WEEE. The conventional process of disintegrating WEEE for recycling faces challenges due to the presence of magnetic materials, making it ineffective with existing equipment. To address this, a specialized device called a disintegrator, using counter-rotating cutting shafts, has been developed for efficient shredding of WEEE containing NdFeB. The goal of the research is to develop a prototype shredder to effectively recover valuable metals, including REEs, from WEEE. Specific sub-objectives include motor and gearbox selection, shaft bearings selection, gear design, and cutting blades design. The work involved calculations and 3D modelling of the disintegrator components using Autodesk Inventor 2020 software.

About 4 million Mg of construction waste is produced in Poland annually. According to the record of a “new” Directive (Directive of the European Parliament and the Council 2008/98/EC of 19 November 2008 on waste and repealing certain directives), preparation to reuse, recycle and other methods of recovery for construction and demolition waste should be increased to the minimum weight of 70% until 2020. In sustainable construction it is preferable to use the products which, after the usage period, can be subject to disposal with a special emphasis on recycling which, in addition to environmental benefits, generates tangible economic benefits. Recycling of building materials is also an important source of raw materials used as the surface foundation for the production of other construction materials or road works. Cellular concrete is nowadays considered to be a “natural” or “environmentally friendly” material. The article discusses the housing sector altogether with the market of construction materials as well as presents the characteristics of cellular concrete - an ecological construction material.

Opis:
In the recent years significantly increased interest in the recovery of non-ferrous metal from waste of electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) has been observed. This waste is classified as hazardous waste because it contains both toxic metals such as lead or mercury and organic components such as polychlorinated biphenyls. For these reasons disposing of this waste is understandable. In Poland many companies have been founded that are involved in recycling of WEEE waste. Typically, companies operating in this sector are one of the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The overriding objective of the SME sector recycling is to increase the degree of exploitation of metallic waste in an economically justifiable way. This paper focuses on some of the above-mentioned issues of technological and qualitative assessment of risks associated with recycling of metal, in principle copper, from WEEE. There are several examples given of the risks faced by domestic companies in the SME recycling WEEE sector.
