The current trends in regulations changes focus more and more on emissions reduction. Earlier environment protection mechanisms covering emissions limits of particulates, nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides and carbon monoxide were recently extended also to cover carbon dioxide emissions. One way to reduce carbon dioxide emission is the improvement of the efficiency of a powertrain system or main driver efficiency. This paper explains main limitations for efficiency improvement when conventional methods are used. The effective heat energy recovery system principles and its technical specification are described including its control principles. System was initially tested in the engine laboratory and experience from the laboratory tests is included in the paper. After successful and promising laboratory tests the solution was transferred to commercial operation which covered already period of more than 2 years. Statistics and operational data from commercial operation is shown with relevant examples of various operational modes. At the end of the paper simple feasibility study is shown. Alternative applications with basic evaluation of their feasibility and efficiency improvement potential are included in this paper as well.

According to operation characteristics of the main engine 9K98ME-C7, a combined turbines-exhaust gas waste heat recovery system is proposed to recover waste heat and increase system energy efficiency. Thermodynamic models based on the first thermodynamic law and the second thermodynamic law are formulated. The superheated steam yield, the total electric power yield, the first thermodynamic law efficiency, the exergy efficiency at different exhaust gas boiler working pressure, and the variation of the exergy efficiency under different feed water temperature and different steam turbine back pressure are analyzed. Thermodynamic results indicate that the most appropriate exhaust gas boiler pressure is 0.8MPa for studied main engine and the total thermal efficiency with combined turbines arrangement has climbed up to 53.8% from 48.5%.

Sounding rockets must be equipped with a proper recovery system enabling the safe return of all rocket modules to the ground. This requirement is achieved by a parachute recovery system triggered by various types of deployment mechanisms. The paper presents the process of designing and implementing a low-cost parachute deployment mechanism for use in sounding rockets. The design of the mechanism is based on commercially available CO2 cartridges, electric igniter and the original housing structure made using 3D printing technology. As a result of a number of experimental tests, the design details of the device were improved. Finally, successful verification tests were carried out on the operation of the developed parachute deployment mechanism on the finished sounding rocket structure.
W artykule przedstawiono proces projektowania i implementacji taniego mechanizmu wyrzucania spadochronów do użytku w rakietach sondujących. Any failure on the recovery system will cause a lot of environmental damage as well as energy loss. Hereof two types of alternatives; fast opening valve system (FOVS) and seal drum system (SDS) may be installed. The focus of this article is on the decision stage to choose the most preferred option in terms of reliability assessment. The major challenge in the research problem is on changing the pressure and temperature during operational cycles, which significantly affect the reliability. In addition, the lack of historical data complicates the reliability assessment method. Hence, we proposed a hybrid approach using fault tree analysis (FTA) and the Mamdani fuzzy inference to estimate reliability response as a function of a few frequently operating pressure and temperature. Also, discrete-event simulation helped us to evaluate the system reliability at different operating conditions. The comparisons reveals that the FOVs outperforms on average of 22.4% than the SDS and it is recommended for putting into practice for purchasing.

This paper presents results of the verification of a heat exchanger composed of gravitation thermal pipes installed in a broiler chicken feeding facility. The objective of the study was to verify the possibility of the application of a power management system including a heat recovery system in a heavy-duty environment of a broiler chicken fattening facility and to specify effects of the system upon the specific consumption of energy for space heating and ventilation of the animal house. The calculation of the thermal balance of the animal house documents that the power management system that includes a heat recovery exchanger unit may reduce the thermal capacity of external sources of heat in the animal house by 26.5% even when subject to extreme conditions and at the atmospheric temperature of -12°C and the age of chickens being 1 day. The results of the metering and calculations of the efficiency have proven that the heat exchanger reaches the operational efficiency of 10–47% and thermal efficiency of 20–80% even during the most demanding operational first twenty days of the breeding cycle of broiler chickens. The specific consumption of energy for space heating and ventilation related to 1 kg of the live weight of chicken in the animal house facility A provided with a heat recovery exchanger unit at the average atmospheric temperature during the cycle being 4.3°C amounted to 278.5 Wh. In the animal house B as not provided with the heat recovery exchanger units hosting the same number of chickens and provided with the same process and thermal loss due heat transmission through peripheral structures being one half compared to the animal house A, the specific consumption of energy per 1 kg of the live weight of chicken was 420.5 Wh.

Opis:
The increase of ship’s energy utilization efficiency and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions have been high lightened in recent years and have become an increasingly important subject for ship designers and owners. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is seeking measures to reduce the CO2 emissions from ships, and their proposed energy efficiency design index (EEDI) and energy efficiency operational indicator (EEOI) aim at ensuring that future vessels will be more efficient. Waste heat recovery can be employed not only to improve energy utilization efficiency but also to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In this paper, a typical conceptual large container ship employing a low speed marine diesel engine as the main propulsion machinery is introduced and three possible types of waste heat recovery systems are designed. To calculate the EEDI and EEOI of the given large container ship, two software packages are developed. From the viewpoint of operation and maintenance, lowering the ship speed and improving container load rate can greatly reduce EEOI and further reduce total fuel consumption. Although the large container ship itself can reach the IMO requirements of EEDI at the first stage with a reduction factor 10% under the reference line value, the proposed waste heat recovery systems can improve the ship EEDI reduction factor to 20% under the reference line value.

The basic scenario of the power system recovery after catastrophic failure is to start the thermal power units that have been shut-down in an emergency by supplying voltage and starting power from self-starting hydroelectric power plants. The consequence of implementing such a plan is the formation of a local island system powered by the hydro plant units in parallel with a turboset of the started thermal power plant. The paper presents the results of measurements recorded in a system test of starting a 264 MW unit at the Turów Power Plant with input from Dychów hydro electric Plant. In particular, the ability to synchronize the unit started at Turów with the hydro sets at Dychów loaded with auxiliaries and pumps was assessed.
Konsekwencją realizacji takiego planu jest tworzenie lokalnego układu wyspowego, w którym źródłem mocy elektrycznej będą równolegle pracujące hydrozespoły elektrowni wodnej i turbozespół uruchomionej elektrowni cieplnej. W referacie przedstawione zostaną wyniki pomiarów zarejestrowane w trakcie próby systemowej uruchomienia bloku energetycznego o mocy 264 MW w Elektrowni Turów z Elektrowni Wodnej Dychów. W szczególności ocenie poddane zostaną możliwości synchronizacji uruchomionego bloku w Elektrowni Turów z hydrogeneratorami EW Dychów, obciążonymi potrzebami własnymi jednostek wytwórczych i pompami w EW Dychów.

Clusters and distributed systems allow for error tolerance and high performance through shared use of the load. When all computers work, we would like to distribute the load equally among computers. When one or more computers are broken, the load on these computers should be redistributed to other computers in the cluster. Redistribution determines the recovery scheme. The recovery plan should keep the load as optimal as when even the most unfavorable combinations of computers are turned off, that is, we want to optimize the behavior of the worst case. In this work, we find new regeneration schemes based on so-called IRB and ideal ring loops and synthesize the corresponding combinatorial structures. They are optimal for many cases of recovery schemes.

Opis:
The paper presents energy and exergy analysis of a typical dwelling ventilation system with heat recovery for Ukrainian climatic conditions using a quasi-steady state approach over 24-hour time-steps. Evaluation of such systems on the base of the first law of thermodynamics demonstrates that heat recovery is beneficial for the whole variety of operational modes. Such methodology identifies as a thermodynamic inefficiency only energy losses to the surroundings with the exhaust air. The exergy-based analysis can detect additional inefficiencies due to irreversibilities within the components of the system. As a result the exergetic investigations show that for the ventilation systems there are operating conditions for which heat recovery increases exergy of fuel expended to provide the ventilation air compared to cases without bringing any recovery of heat and additional power consumption to drive the air flow by the fans. For the specified system, in case of switching ventilation unit to the operation mode of lower values of spent fuel exergy it is possible to provide annual saving of the primary energy sources from 5 to 15%.
W pracy przedstawiono analizę energetyczną i egzergetyczną typowego systemu wentylacji mieszkań z odzyskiem ciepła dla ukraińskich warunków klimatycznych z zastosowaniem podejścia quasi-stabilnego w 24-godzinnych krokach czasowych.

Opis:
Waste heat plays a significant role in obtaining the 4th and 5th generation of District Heating (DH) System in cities. This article presents the possibilities of integrating selected waste heat emitters into DH, with the objective of meeting the demand for heat for the selected residential area (approx. 4000 inhabitants) in the city of Gliwice (180 000 inhabitants). The total heating demand of the studied area was estimated at 19 800 GJ including both space heating and domestic hot water. The maximum thermal power was estimated at approx. 2.45 MW. The demand was calculated on the basis of registered metering values for individual buildings which were processed and summarized due to the lack of collective meters for the district. A detailed data classification, correction and completion procedure was elaborated to deal with non-uniform and low-quality data registration. Two industrial objects with waste heat generation were examined to be integrated with the local DH network. The waste heat generation potential equals 9.0 MW for plant #1 and 0.9 MW for plant #2. Apart from the constant generation declared by the industrial entities, realistic profiles including possible shaft-work and maintenance periods were created. It has been shown that the total heat demand for selected residential areas can be covered by integrating waste heat into the current DH network. Depending on the waste heat generation profile, the local area heat demand can be covered entirely or to a large degree (coverage factor ranges from 72 to 100%). The waste heat utilization factor ranges from 6.3 to 8.3%. To manage the remaining waste heat potential, it is required to build additional district heating pipelines and nodes connecting to the existing network to receive an additional 7.45 MW thermal power. The potential of waste heat recovery is significant at the scale of a medium sized city: integrating two large industrial emitters allows up to 13% decarbonization of heats production in the local district heating plan.
