Opis:
A method of tensile testing of materials in dynamic conditions based on a slightly modified compressive split Hopkinson bar system using a shoulder is described in this paper. The main goal was to solve, with the use of numerical modelling, the problem of wave disturbance resulting from application of a shoulder, as well as the problem of selecting a specimen geometry that enables to study the phenomenon of high strain-rate failure in tension. It is shown that, in order to prevent any interference of disturbance with the required strain signals at a given recording moment, the positions of the strain gages on the bars have to be correctly chosen for a given experimental setup. Besides, it is demonstrated that - on the basis of simplified numerical analysis - an appropriate gage length and diameter of a material specimen for failure testing in tension can be estimated.

Opis:
Based on the monthly data from four aggregated agricultural sectors for the 2001−2014 period, this paper investigates the determinants of demand for agricultural imports in Ukraine by using the time-varying parameter technique (the Kalman filter). The outcome suggests that the real exchange rate depreciation contributes to a lower demand for meat, fish and dairy products; vegetable oil and foodstuffs, while not affecting demand for wheat and vegetables. Domestic industrial output correlates with a higher demand for all four groups of agricultural imports. Import substitution effect of domestic agricultural production is found for three out of four groups of agricultural imports, except meat, fish and dairy products. Following an increase in international prices, there is a decrease in demand for wheat and vegetables, as well as for foodstuffs, while there is an opposite effect in demand for other groups, i.e. meat, fish and dairy products and vegetable oil.

Opis:
Using monthly data for the 2001─2013 period, this paper applies Error- Correction Model (ECM) to estimate export demand effects for Ukraine’s agricultural commodities and foodstuffs. According to our results, the long-run exchange rate sensitivity of export demand seems to be rather weak, whereas the domestic income effect is high enough across all four groups: (i) meat, fish and dairy products; (ii) wheat and vegetables; (iii) vegetable oil and (iv) foodstuffs. No evidence is found of the long-term relationship between agricultural exports and foreign trade-partner industrial output. However, both exchange rate and foreign output are established to strongly affect the demand for agricultural exports in the short-run. Also, there is evidence of a speedy short-run adjustment for all groups of agricultural exports to their long-run relationships.

There is a need to measure the efficiency and effectiveness of higher education in its various aspects, including the area of non-monetary benefits of higher education. Education relates to the wider economic and social effects and human welfare depends partly on earnings but also on non-monetary outcomes that all trace back to education in various ways. There exist positive relationships between education and health, the health of family members, the schooling of one’s children, life choices made, fertility choices and infant mortality. Increasing the education level also has a positive effect on the environment and has a strong influence on crime reduction. The article is a review of the impact of the intangible benefits of higher education, particularly non-monetary private and the social rates of return on investment in education. Empirical studies are carried out on data from the Social Diagnosis2 2011.

In this paper, we address the adaptive detection/classification of signals in a homogenous interference environment. We refer to a radar system equipped with a phased array antenna and account for both the presence of mutual coupling between radiating antennas and a possible coherent interferer impinging on the array mainbeam. To deal with this scenario, we adopt a two-stage detection/classification scheme, enjoying the Costant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) property, to discriminate between target detection and coherent interferer rejection. Finally, we evaluate the system performance via Monte Carlo simulations. The results show that our system has interesting rejection capabilities and satisfactory detection levels. As a consequence, it could be successfully applied in real scenarios where mutual coupling is present.

Opis:
In this paper, the field equations of the generalized coupled thermoplasticity theory are derived using the postulates of classical thermodynamics of irreversible processses. Using the Legendre transformations two new thermodynamics potentials P and S depending upon internal thermodynamic forces Π are introduced. The most general form for all the thermodynamics potentials are assumed instead of the usually used additive form. Due to this assumption, it is possible to describe all the effects of thermomechanical couples and also the elastic-plastic coupling effects observed in such materials as rocks, soils, concretes and in some metalic materials. In this paper not only the usual postulate of existence of a dissipation qupotential (the Gyarmati postulate) is used to derive the velocity equation. The plastic flow constitutive equations have the character of non-associated flow laws even when the Gyarmati postulate is assumed. In general formulation, the plastic strain rate tensor is normal to the surface of the generalized function of plastic flow defined in the the space of internal thermodynamic forces Π but is not normal to the yield surface. However, in general formulation and after the use the Gyarmati postulate, the direction of the sum of the plastic strain rate tensor and the coupled elastic strain rate tensor is normal to the yield surface.

Opis:
In this paper, we have analyzed the performance of our optimized non-zero dispersion shifted fiber with three different test fibers, namely, single mode fiber, conventional non-zero dispersion shifted fiber and dispersion shifted fiber. While comparing the performances of those fibers, our optimized non-zero dispersion shifted fiber has yielded a better quality factor of 5.24 at 2.5 Gbit/s for long haul fiber length of 120 km in the absence of amplification and dispersion compensation. In order to measure the nonlinear impairments of wavelength division multiplexing channel, the quality factor values are measured at the sample channel 193.1 THz for 150 km lengthed fiber with peak input power of 6 dBm. Due to a very large effective area of optimized non-zero dispersion shifted fiber, it delivers a better quality factor of 6.12 compared to the other test fibers. We have also carried out the analysis for higher bitrates and different modulation formats at the transmission end. More phase encoded modulations of carrier-suppressed return-to-zero–differentiated phase shift keying and carrier-suppressed return-to-zero–differential quadrature phase shift keying offered optimum performances for a distance of 120 km at 10 Gbit/s bitrate. By including optical amplifiers, we could achieve a record fiber transmission length of 4000 km at the bitrate of 2.5 Gbit/s which can help the future wavelength division multiplexing optical networks to a great extent.
