In Poland the radioactive contamination of the environment and food has been controlled since the early sixties by the Service for Measurements of Radioactive Contamination (SPSP). The Service comprises a network of measuring stations and the Centre of Radioactive Contamination Measurements (COPSP). Actually, there are 100 measurement stations. The main task of such station is systematic measurement of radioactivity level in samples of environment components and food. Nine stations of SPSP acting within meteorological stations, ten stations of low level air radioactivity measurements (Aerosols Sampling Stations ASS-500) and eleven permanent monitoring stations (PMS) form the radiation monitoring warning system in Poland.

Environmental phenomena have a major impact on our daily lives. These include changes affecting the sources of life such as in the waters and air of our world, which have been degraded in purity. The term ‘smart environment’ is defined as a technology that provides many facilities and solutions for many environmental application issues related to water quality and health, air pollution, weather, radiation monitoring, waste management, natural disaster, and many other environment indicators. Smart environment sensors integrated with ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT) technology can provide a new concept in tracking, sensing and monitoring objects of environment. This can provide potential benefits leading up to the possibility of achieving a green world and a sustainable lifestyle. IoT allows environmental sensors to connect with other systems such smart phones through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to send enormous amounts of data to the network and can allow us to have a better understanding of our surroundings and find suitable solutions for today environmental problems. In this review article, we will provide a brief conception of environment areas of study based on IoT technology and discuss the justification behind using IoT in the field of environmental studies. Moreover, we will investigate many proposed applications of environmental research based upon IoT.

Opis:
Radiation measurements for high energy physics experiments, nuclear facilities, hospitals and hadron therapy institutes require precise low current sensing. This paper provides a methodology for experimental characterisation of the leakage current sources present at the input of a current-to-digital converter. The limitations in sub-picoampere current measurements are presented along with the design of an ASIC that can accurately measure currents in the femto-ampere range after integrating over sufficient time. Proposals to minimise the subthreshold leakage current of the switches connected to the input, the leakage current of the package, the leakage of the PCB and the leakage related to the ESD protection diodes are shown. The remaining leakage current can be measured and subtracted. The front-end can digitise currents over 8 decades produced by a radiation detector. These guidelines were established during the current design and testing and will be used for the second version of the front-end electronics that will be installed at CERN for radiation protection and monitoring.

After the major accidents in “Chernobyl” NPP, located on the territory of present-day Ukraine, and then in the USSR in April 1986, in Bulgaria, as well as in most European countries a lack of systems for a continuous measurement of gamma radiation was reported, which have to provide reliable real-time information on radiation status. Consequently, in the European Union, construction of automated systems for continuous monitoring of gamma radiation has begun. Observations on the state of the radiation background in Bulgaria are carried out in parallel in two ways. A serious problem can cause people to cross a state border in random unregulated places and not at a checkpoint.

It is known that everything on our planet is subjected to constant exposure from the natural and anthropogenic, earth and space SIR, and is situated in conditions created by natural and technical radioactive Backlight. The ionizing radiations accompany planet life in its diff erent manifestations of all phases of the evolution. The National Automated System for continuous monitoring of the radiation background has 26 local monitoring stations (LMS) covering the whole country, with greater density around NPP ‘Kozloduy’. Radiometric measurements in real conditions, sampling, and analysis are carried out by the Executive Environment Agency (EEA) at the MoEW and radiological control laboratories. A special place in radiation safety is taken by timely detection of radioactive waste and materials that appear in one way or another in the environment.

The paper deals with the arrangement of mining and environmental monitoring at open-pit mineral deposits using the electromagnetic geophysical method. The characteristic of the method of natural electromagnetic radiation (NEMR) discrete registration for searching geodynamically active faults to increase the safety of mining operations at ore deposits is given by the example of the apatite-nepheline deposit of the Khibiny rock massif. The existence of the dependence of the anomalous values of EMF in the Earth’s pulse electromagnetic field on the stress-strain state of the massif on the basis of electrophysical phenomena occurring in the rock is substantiated. The efficiency of the method for search and mapping of geodynamic active faults is proven. In future, the use of this method will improve the effectiveness of measures taken to predict and prevent dangerous geodynamic phenomena.

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate whether applicable regulations unambiguously specify the role of public administration authorities in terms of protection against electromagnetic radiation in the environment. The paper employs the method of interpretation of norms of applicable law within which normative material of the discussed issue is analysed and selected opinions of the legal thought and judicial decisions are referred to. The paper also refers to the assessment of electromagnetic radiation in the environment in the West Pomeranian Voivodship in 2018 made on the basis of research carried out according to the State Environmental Monitoring Programme for 2016–2020, which in turn is grounded in the regulation of Article 2(1)(2) of the act of Inspection of Environmental Protection. The measurements were made in accordance with a relevant regulation and did not show excess levels of electronic fields in the environment. However, it needs to be remembered that the dynamic development of the telecommunication industry will result in enhanced monitoring and checks of the levels of these fields especially in publically available places.

Methods for synthesis a structural diagram of the processes for detecting and locating technical information leakage channels are analysed. Software for defining a controlled room zone was also presented. A proprietary approach to search the electromagnetic environment under radio interference has been developed to detect devices for unauthorized control of acoustic information using microphones and transmission of this information using a radio channel.
Przedstawiono metody syntezy schematu strukturalnego procesów wykrywania i lokalizacji technicznych kanałów wycieku informacji. Przedstawiono także oprogramowanie do definiowania kontrolowanej strefy pomieszczenia. Opracowano autorskie podejście do przeszukiwania środowiska elektromagnetycznego w warunkach zakłóceń radiowych, w celu wykrywania urządzeń służących do niedozwolonej kontroli informacji akustycznej za pomocą mikrofonów i transmisji tej informacji z wykorzystaniem kanału radiowego.

A large national project: Development of a satellite method for Baltic ecosystem monitoring (DESAMBEM) for creating mathematical models and a complex algorithm for the remote sensing of the Baltic ecosystem and its primary production is described. The final aim of the project is the development of a routine remote sensing methodology for determining characteristics of the Baltic ecosystem such as distribution maps of surface temperature, water transparency, upwelling currents, phytoplankton blooms, radiation balance, pigment concentrations and primary production. The progress of the study and examples of results are presented.

This study presents the results of dosimetry radiation measurement performed in the Antarctic region at the surface of the sea which was conducted between January and March 2018. Over 2 200 records were collected using a portable Gamma Scout Online radiometer during a 72-day voyage circumnavigating the continent of Antarctica. The mean average of the measured radiation dose rate was 0.091 μSvh-1 and varied from 0.052 to 0.193 μSvh-1. These result are above global average dose rate of radiation at sea level (0.031 μSvh-1) and often higher than those recorded on the Antarctic continent. Yet generally our records fall within well recognized latitudinal trend of radiation being higher toward poles. This is results of troposphere begins at lower altitude in Antarctic in comparison to lower latitudes. The origin of this radiation is natural and results from the presence of higher cosmic rays and secondary radiation induced in the atmosphere. The presence of terrestrial radionuclides in the Antarctic environment has a local, secondary influence on the measured values of radiation. The theoretical calculated annual dose equivalent for humans present in Antarctica could often exceed the limit of 1 mSv as recorded for other Antarctic locations yet our results (0.772 mSv per year) do not confirm that.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki dozymetrycznych pomiarów promieniowania, przeprowadzonych przez załogę jachtu Katharsis II, w trakcie 72-dniowego rejsu wokół Antarktydy. Podczas rejsu trwającego od stycznia do marca 2018 roku, za pomocą przenośnego radiometru Gamma Scout Online rejestrowano dawki promieniowania na poziomie morza w odstępach 10-minutowych. Po wstępnej analizie statystycznej uzyskano dane w postaci 2 200 rekordów, które wykorzystano do wnioskowania o rozkładzie promieniowania w rejonie Antarktyki. Średnia zmierzona moc dawki promieniowania wyniosła 0,091 μSvh-1 i wahała się od 0,052 do 0,193 μSvh-1. Wyniki te są powyżej średniej globalnej mocy dawki promieniowania na poziomie morza (0,031 μSvh-1) i często wyższe niż te zarejestrowane bezpośrednio na Antarktydzie. Jednak, generalnie zarejestrowane przez nas dawki promieniowania mieszczą się w dobrze rozpoznanym równoleżnikowym trendzie, w którym promieniowanie jest wyższe w kierunku biegunów. Związane jest to z cieńszą warstwą troposfery w rejonach biegunowych w porównaniu z niższymi, równikowymi szerokościami geograficznymi. Ogólnie pochodzenie tego promieniowania jest naturalne i związane z silniejszą penetracją troposfery przez promieniowanie kosmiczne oraz obecnością promieniowania wtórnego indukowanego w atmosferze. Obecność radionuklidów naziemnych w środowisku Antarktyki ma lokalny, wtórny wpływ na mierzone wartości promieniowania. Teoretycznie obliczony roczny ekwiwalent dawki dla ludzi, w różnych miejscach Antarktydy, może przekraczać limit 1 mSv, natomiast nasze wyniki (0,772 mSv rocznie) tego nie potwierdzają.

Purpose: This paper aims to present the nuclear security and radiological protection system in Poland. Method: The scientific methods used in this paper include critical analysis of literature as well as analysis and logical construction method. The research was conducted based on data relating to the Polish Armed Forces. Results: The article presents selected issues related to radiation security in the state defence system. It explains the essence of this problem. It presents entities responsible for the implementation of tasks related to nuclear safety and radiological protection in Poland, as well as legal acts that regulate these aspects of state security. Conclusions: The issue in questions has huge implications for both the natural and medical sciences, as well as for the psychological aspects. Compliance with strict safety requirements and work regulations is crucial for protecting workers’ health and life and, in particular, the security of millions of citizens, as one of the biggest radiation disasters in the world history, the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, may prove. Rising some kind of public awareness and education in the area of radiation security is also extremely important. The society needs to understand the problem and then accept it as an inevitable process in building a new national power industry.

This article is the first of two papers on the remote sensing methods of monitoring the Baltic ecosystem, developed by a Polish team. The main aim of the five- year SatBałtyk (2010–2014) research project (Satellite Monitoring of the Baltic Sea Environment) is to prepare the technical infrastructure and set in motion operational procedures for the satellite monitoring of the Baltic environment. This system is to characterize on a routine basis the structural and functional properties of this sea on the basis of data supplied by the relevant satellites. The characterization and large-scale dissemination of the following properties of the Baltic is anticipated: the solar radiation influx to the sea’s waters in various spectral intervals, energy balances of the short- and long-wave radiation at the Baltic Sea surface and in the upper layers of the atmosphere over the Baltic, sea surface temperature distribution, dynamic states of the water surface, concentrations of chlorophyll a and other phytoplankton pigments in the Baltic water, distributions of algal blooms, the occurrence of upwelling events, and the characteristics of primary organic matter production and photosynthetically released oxygen in the water. It is also intended to develop and, where feasible, to implement satellite techniques for detecting slicks of petroleum derivatives and other compounds, evaluating the state of the sea’s ice cover, and forecasting the hazards from current and future storms and providing evidence of their effects in the Baltic coastal zone. The ultimate objective of the project is to implement an operational system for the routine determination and dissemination on the Internet of the above-mentioned features of the Baltic in the form of distribution maps as well as plots, tables and descriptions characterizing the state of the various elements of the Baltic environment. The main sources of input data for this system will be the results of systematic recording by environmental satellites and also special-purpose ones such as TIROS N/NOAA, MSG (currently Meteosat 9), EOS/AQUA and ENVISAT. The final effects of the SatBałtyk project are to be achieved by the end of 2014, i.e. during a period of 60 months. These two papers present the results obtained during the first 15 months of the project. Part 1 of this series of articles contains the assumptions, objectives and a description of the most important stages in the history of our research, which constitute the foundation of the current project. It also discusses the way in which SatBałtyk functions and the scheme of its overall operations system. The second article (Part 2), will discuss some aspects of its practical applicability in the satellite monitoring of the Baltic ecosystem (see Woźniak et al. (2011) in this issue).
