The study is a part of the research on the couching method as a tool for adult personality development related to the managerial potential development. The aim was to find out differences between subjectively and objectively measured levels of managerial potential in a research sample and to compare differences in their positions as managers and non-managers. The study was based on the conception of managerial potential development. The article gives results of the Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI) where the managerial potential was measured in seven competencies. The results were compared with the research sample’s self-assessment in a questionnaire of own design. The finding was that managers achieved better results in objectively measured competencies than in subjectively measured competencies. They scored highest in the objectively measured managerial competence Inquisitive and lowest in the objectively measured managerial competence Adjustment. Candidates achieved better results in objectively measured competencies than in subjectively measured competencies. They scored highest in the objectively measured managerial competence Interpersonal Sensitivity and lowest in the objectively measured managerial competence Adjustment. In subjective self-assessment, managers achieved higher mean scores than candidates in the competence Ambition. Managers, again, scored higher than candidates in subjective assessment of the competence Inquisitive. In subjective assessment, candidates scored highest in the managerial competence Interpersonal Sensitivity and lowest in the managerial competence Learning Approach. There were no statistically significant differences between managers and candidates for managerial positions in the managerial potential.

The article considers safety culture and discusses its role with regard to risks associated with the fire service. Attention was drawn to the gap in research on this issue, especially in Poland. The following research problem was formulated: what is and what dimensions does a safety culture conducive to fire services consist of? The cognitive objective was to understand and present the essence of safety culture and its importance, and the utilitarian objective was to identify possible tools for measuring safety culture in fire services. A proprietary definition of safety culture in the fire service has been proposed. An analysis and comparison of different tools for assessing safety culture in the sector were carried out. Attention was drawn to the need to be systematic in conducting this assessment and the necessity of providing adequate training and experiences of other sectors.
W artykule zaprezentowano rozważania nad kulturą bezpieczeństwa, a także omówiono jej rolę w świetle zagrożeń łączących się ze służbą pożarniczą. Zwrócono uwagę na lukę w badaniach nad tym zagadnieniem, szczególnie w Polsce. Sformułowano następujący problem badawczy: Czym jest i z jakich wymiarów się składa kultura bezpieczeństwa sprzyjająca służbom pożarniczym? Jako cel poznawczy przyjęto zrozumienie oraz przedstawienie istoty kultury bezpieczeństwa i jej znaczenia, a za cel utylitarny zidentyfikowanie możliwych narzędzi pomiaru kultury bezpieczeństwa w służbach pożarniczych. Zaproponowano autorską definicję kultury bezpieczeństwa w służbie pożarniczej. Dokonano analizy i porównania różnych narzędzi służących ocenie kultury bezpieczeństwa w tym sektorze. Zwrócono uwagę na konieczność systematyczności w prowadzeniu tej oceny, a także na potrzebę szkoleń i uczenia się ma podstawie doświadczeń innych branż.

In Poland, since 1985 when the matura exam in mathematics was no longer compulsory, low-level of math skills and poor learning results have been constantly talked about. The academic community warned that young people were massively avoiding the technical, mathematical fields of study and fields with mathematics as a compulsory subject. We are seeing a constantly decreasing level of mathematical knowledge of first-year students, and sometimes even their ignorance of the elementary issues, basic concepts or an awkwardness in performing calculations. The situation would radically change after the reintroduction of the compulsory matura exam in mathematics in 2010. This article presents the results of the evaluation of the mathematical competence of students (who were obliged to pass the matura exam in mathematics). The evaluation was carried out every year at the beginning of the first year of the economic undergraduate studies during 2012-2014. We have analyzed the level of mathematical competence in the area of knowledge and skills over the subsequent years as well as the knowledge of selected content from the core curriculum of mathematics taught in upper-secondary schools.

The objective of this study is to validate the Polish adaptation of the Short Form of the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ-SF; Bohlmeijer, Klooster, Fledderus, Veehof, & Baer) – a 24-item inventory measuring mindfulness in daily life – in a Polish sample. The psychometric properties of the Polish version were assessed in a sample of 885 individuals: 710 meditation-naïve and 175 meditation-advanced ones. The following psychometric properties were examined: reliability (internal consistency, temporal stability, discriminant validity), internal validity (confirmatory factor analyses), and convergent validity (correlation between the five FFMQ facets and neuroticism, emotional stability, rumination, openness to experience, ego strength, extraversion, and reflection). The results confirmed the reliability (internal consistency, temporal stability, discriminant validity), internal validity (the orthogonal 5-factor model), and convergent validity of the Polish adaptation in a nonclinical meditation-naïve and meditation-advanced population aged 15-63. The FFMQ-SF proved to be an effective instrument for measuring mindfulness in nonclinical meditation-naïve and meditation-experienced Polish samples. Further replications in clinical samples are needed.

In this paper, we present a new questionnaire for the assessment of self-control as an individual trait. We describe the process of construction of this assessment tool. We also report the results of relevant validation studies. The questionnaire has two independent versions, one based on self-reports (NAS-50) and another one based on other-reports (NAS-40). The first version consists of five subscales (10 items each), called Initiative and Persistence (IP), Proactive Control (PC), Switching and Flexibility (SF), Inhibition and Adjournment (IA), and Goal Maintenance (GM). Seven samples of participants (N = 934 altogether) took part in the validation study. The second version has not been split into subscales. Both versions obtained satisfactory indices of internal consistency, assessed with Cronbach’s alpha (for NAS- 50 total score a = .861, for the subscales a between .726 and .867; for NAS-40 a = .844). The NAS-50 and NAS-40 scores were highly correlated with other measures of self-control, including Tangney, Baumeister, and Boone’s (2004) self-control scale. They also proved to be entirely independent of general intelligence. In conclusion, both versions can be regarded reliable and valid enough, and therefore suitable for the assessment of trait self-control for research purposes.

This paper presents a validation study of a new questionnaire of self-control as an individual trait. The questionnaire has two parallel versions, one based on self-reports (AS-36) and another one based on informant reports (AS-36-3). Each version consists of three subscales, called Inhibition (12 items), Switching (12 items), and Goal Monitoring (12 items). Eight samples of participants (N = 935 altogether) took part in the validation study. Both versions obtained satisfactory indices of internal consistency, assessed with Cronbach’s alpha and split-half coefficients. Selfcontrol assessed with this scale proved to be entirely independent of general intelligence. However, AS-36 and AS-36-3 scores tended to correlate with other self-report measures of trait self control, such as Tangney, Baumeister, and Boone’s (2004) self-control scale. We conclude that AS-36 is a valid and reliable tool, suitable for assessment of self-control in both research and diagnostic settings.

An overview of assessment strategies in an evidence-based programme aimed at promoting entrepreneurial skills of disadvantaged young people. Key-elements of evidence-based programs are reviewed and the development of a competence questionnaire to fulfil the requirements of assessments of evidence-based programme development practices and research based on Chorpita’s (2003) categorization. The strategies of selecting scales to utilize in content validation of the ten competencies identified are provided. Self-efficacy, assertive behaviour, locus of control scales, as well as the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (Goodman, 1997) have corroborate the content validity of the competency questionnaire by providing strong correlation with required competency sub-scales at a p < 0,01 significance level. On the other hand, two alternative possible explanations are offered why self-esteem scale of Rosenberg (1965) did not provide any correlations.

ObjectivesThe measurement of the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is one of the most important methods for self-assessment of health, which makes it possible to identify irregularities in the physical, mental and social functioning. The aim of the research was to determine HRQOL using the Health Related Quality of Life Questionnaire for Children and Young People (the KIDSCREEN-52 questionnaire) – the instrument recommended by the World Health Organization – which makes it possible to distinguish groups of adolescents with a diversified subjective sense of the quality of life.Material and MethodsThe study involved a group of 871 adolescents, 411 boys and 460 girls, aged 13–16 years, residing in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodship. The method of a diagnostic survey was used in the research. The KIDSCREEN-52 questionnaire, which is an instrument for examining the HRQOL of adolescents, was employed in the study. The k-means clustering method was applied, which made it possible to establish 3 groups of adolescents with a different subjective sense of the quality of life.ResultsThree groups of adolescents with a diversified subjective sense of the quality of life (high, average, low) were identified using the KIDSCREEN-52 questionnaire. The subjective quality of life in the majority of the respondents was high, in particular in those living in rural areas. The surveyed boys with a high subjective quality of life showed a significantly higher self-esteem, acceptance and peer support than the surveyed girls.ConclusionsThe KIDSCREEN-52 questionnaire is an accurate and sensitive tool for assessing HRQOL. It allows identifying 3 groups of adolescents with a diversified subjective sense of the quality of life. It can form the basis for further diagnosis of the bio-psycho-social functioning of adolescents.

Today’s navigation systems risk information overload and display clutter due to the multitude of available functionalities and information. Different navigational situations present differing challenges to the navigator, because of varying traffic or maneuvering conditions. This suggests that the need for information and functionalities on ECDIS and radar systems depends on the navigational situation, which was investigated by means of an online questionnaire. A sea voyage was divided into three situations, ranging from narrow maneuvering in port areas, to confined navigable waters, and open sea. N = 80 navigators completed the questionnaire. A compound priority measure was calculated to express the need for each functionality. Approximately half of the functionalities were prioritized in a situation dependent manner and substantially more functionalities were prioritized higher on ECDIS than on radar systems. The results have strong implications for aligning navigation systems more with user needs in the sense of a human-centered design approach.

The article presents an analysis of the results of a survey conducted in 2022 among students and young graduates of three vocational education courses, studying in EU countries (N = 428). The area of research concerns the awareness of competencies sought-after by employers and the self-assessed level of these competencies. The authors used tests of the equality of two means in order to check for differences in assessments according to the respondents' metric characteristics, and also factor analysis to check for similarities in attitudes towards different types of competencies in the respondents' assessments. Finding such similarities would allow to use a summative scale and reduce the dimensions.
W artykule zaprezentowano analizę wyników badań ankietowych przeprowadzonych w 2022 r. na grupie uczniów i młodych absolwentów trzech kierunków kształcenia zawodowego pobierających naukę w kilku krajach unijnych (N = 428). Prezentowany obszar badań dotyczy znajomości kompetencji pożądanych przez pracodawców oraz samooceny poziomu tych kompetencji. Wykorzystano test równości średnich w celu sprawdzenia różnic w ocenach ze względu na cechy metryczkowe respondentów. Analizę czynnikową zastosowano dla sprawdzenia, czy w ocenach respondentów można zauważyć podobieństwo podejścia do różnych rodzajów kompetencji. Ewentualne stwierdzenie takiej prawidłowości pozwoliłoby na stosowanie skali sumacyjnej i redukcję wymiarów.
