Opis:
Purpose: Recent studies have shown that the role of social support is a predictive factor influencing the course of the disease. The current study is focused on patients’ assessment of quality of life and the relationship of the latter with perceived social support. Materials and methods: A total sample of 40 hemodialysis patients voluntarily participated in this study. Participants were recruited from two clinics in Athens and have been under hemodialysis. The measures used were the Missoula- Vitas Quality of Life Index–15 and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. For the data analysis descriptive statistics, parametric Pearson r test and Non-parametric Spearman’s rho test were used. Statistical level was set up at 0.05. Results: The results of the current study provide good quality of life of hemodialysis patients and significant statistical significance between quality of life in several domains. Conclusions: This study concludes that the participants’ assessment of quality of life is poor regarding the well-being dimension. Also, perceived social support is significantly related to quality of life

Opis:
To assess the quality of life of patients with chronic end-stage renal failure under hemodialysis, and to determine its main generators in hemodialysis patients. This is a descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study carried out at the regional hospital of Kénitra (Morocco) in the level of the hemodialysis unit during a period of 3 months with 70 hemodialysis patients diagnosed and treated for chronic renal failure. Data were collected using a questionnaire comprising the socio-demographic, clinical, and nutritional characteristics of Hemodialysis patients and a KDQOL scale (Kidney Disease Quality Of Life) that assesses the quality of life. The scores of the KDQOL-36 were used to assess family, social support, and social support from caregivers. The average age was 51.66± 15.96 years with 57.1% of patients who are female. The components of the quality of life studied show an alteration in the quality of life with a decrease in the scores of the “component of physical health” dimensions with a score of 27.64 ± 29.13,“Component of mental health” with a score of 37.81 ± 22.99, “effects of kidney disease on daily life” with a score of 48.41 ± 21.22 and “burdens of kidney disease” with a score of 28.47 ± 21.50. While the dimension “Symptoms / problems of kidney disease” remains close to normal with a score of 64.61 ± 17.98. Our results showed that certain dimensions of the quality of life correlate with age, sex, family situation, level of education, the presence of a transplant plan, the presence of comorbidities and the duration of hemodialysis. Our study also found a correlation between family social support and quality of life in its “Burdens of Kidney Disease”, “Effects of Kidney Disease on Daily Living”, and the overall quality of life score. On the other hand, there is no significant relationship with support from caregivers. The quality of life of hemodialysis patients is deteriorating. It is influenced by several parameters including family and caregiver social support. The involvement of the family and the health care team in the psychological support process is paramount.

Objectives of the research: The goal of the research was to identify the type and extent of activities that special education facilities engage in to teach and promote independence in people with profound disorders of intellectual development. Research methods: Empirical material was collected using the author’s original online questionnaire, which consisted of 30 questions measuring the extent to which students’ needs for developing independent living skills are met. The survey was conducted among special education teachers (N=642) from seven European countries (Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, and Turkey). A short description of the context of the issue: Independent living is widely seen as an immanent attribute of adulthood. Children and adolescents are prepared for independent living through the process of upbringing and socialization; people with disabilities are additionally prepared through rehabilitation. For people with a profound disorder of intellectual development, independent living is challenging but possible with the right support. Research findings: The results indicate that in the course of developing independent living skills in people with profound disorders of intellectual development, efforts are mainly made to improve their self-management skills and democratic management methods in both team work and individual work. Conclusions and recommendations: In the surveyed countries, there is a tendency to limit work for developing independent living skills to a single type of intervention. Rarely are two or three methods – not to mention four – simultaneously used to stimulate the development of independent living skills. It is therefore necessary to call for increased efforts to promote independent living among people with profound disorders of intellectual development and to focus this support on autonomy, self-determination, achieving quality of life goals, and, above all, the ability to make decisions – since this is what determines true independence in life.

Opis:
ObjectivesThe study explores the direct and indirect associations (i.e., through the extent of the level of loneliness and perceived social support) between internet use for instrumental purposes and the quality of life (QoL) among elderly females and males in Poland.Material and MethodsThe analysis was based on 2001 face-to-face interviews performed among randomly selected individuals aged ≥65 years from the general population. The collected data was weighted to generalize the study sample for the reference population. The analysis was conducted using multiple linear regression models. The mediation effect was tested according to the Baron and Kenny approach.ResultsThe obtained results indicate that internet use for instrumental purposes is directly related to a better QoL of elderly Polish males. This positive effect among men also occurs indirectly, through the decrease in loneliness levels as well as the increase in social support scores. It has also been shown that among elderly females, the effect of internet use for instrumental purposes is not related to a better QoL, either directly or indirectly.ConclusionsInternet use for instrumental purposes seems to be important in enhancing a successful life among elderly male adults. However, these technologies are not associated with better QoL among females. Practitioners should be aware of these gender differences. The study adds to the previous studies by demonstrating that the feeling of loneliness and social support mediates the relationship between internet use for instrumental purposes and QoL among elderly males, whereas among elderly females this effect does not occur.

The article focuses on assessing the psychological situation of parents and adult siblings of people with intellectual disabilities. The aim of the research presented in this article was to check whether social support plays an important role in achieving social well-being of parents raising children with intellectual disabilities and their adult siblings. Analysis of the research results made it possible to conclude which dimensions are particularly important for specific components of mental well-being among parents and adult siblings of people with intellectual disabilities. Research confirmed some theoretical assumptions about the role of support as a determinant of the level of psychological well-being of the respondents.

ObjectivesWork-related stress (WRS) is significantly associated with health-related quality of life (HRQoL), but the amounts of evidence on differences of effort-reward imbalance (ERI) and job strain index (JSI) remain sparse and have limited generalizability. Therefore, we aimed to assess the association between ERI and JSI with HRQoL and assess the mediation effect of social support (JS) and over-commitment (OC) on this association in Taiwan’s civil servants.Material and MethodsA cross-sectional national survey was given to registered civil servants in Taiwan – 20 046 civil servants from 647 institutions were enrolled using multistage stratified random cluster sampling. A web-questionnaire collected demographic information, job characteristics, and different indexes of ERI and job-control-demand-support (JCDS) models. Structural equation model (SEM) was used to examine the association between ERI and JSI with HRQoL, and the mediation effect of JS and OC on the associations.ResultsIn the ERI model, ERI and OC were consistently negatively associated with the mental component score (MCS) (r = –0.46 and r = –0.37) and physical component score (PCS) (r = –0.45 and r = –0.34), which were higher than job demand (r = –0.28 and r = –0.22) and JSI (r = –0.38 and r = –0.29). Using hierarchical multiple regression analyses, ERI was significantly correlated with MCS and PCS, which was consistently higher than JSI. The ERI and JSI were significantly correlated with MCS (β = –0.170 and β = –0.140) and PCS (β = –0.150 and β = –0.082) using SEM analysis, whereas ERI was considerably higher than in JSI. In addition, OC and JS mediated the association between The ERI and JSI with HRQoL.ConclusionsWe found the ERI index is significantly correlated with HRQoL superior to JSI, in particular among Taiwan civil servants. Further longitudinal studies are needed to determine the causality and spatiotemporal relation of these differences.

Background. Assessment of quality of life (QoL) is important for cancer survival and can be influenced by positive social support. The aim of the study was to compare the QoL of patients with breast cancer in terms of using the support of a self-help group (SG) in relation to quality of life. Material and methods. The research group consisted of 135 respondents, who were the patients with malignant breast cancer. The first comparative sample of respondents, who did not attend the SG, was numbered 70. The second comparative sample of respondents, who attended the SG, consisted of 65 patients. Results. In mental health QoL, body image was rated better in patients who attended the SG; in relationship QoL, positive significance was shown in the sphere of sexual life and social support in the SG patients. In the environmental area, QoL was statistically significant in the availability of health services in favor of the SG patients. When comparing the individual domains of the questionnaire, we found more significant differences in the sphere of mental experience and social relationships for the SG patients. Conclusions. Social intervention has a positive effect on treatment outcome, length of life and the life quality of breast cancer survivors and contributes significantly to coping with changes in social ties, sexual intimacy in marriages and partnerships, family relationships and has a positive effect on improving mental and physical health.
Wprowadzenie. Materiał i metody.
