Opis:
Physicochemical techniques used for evaluating the pulmonary surfactant (PS) quality are discussed as methods useful in assessing toxicity of inhaled gases and particles. Two standard devices, Langmuir-Wilhelmy film balance and pulsating bubble apparatus, are presented in detail, and the measured results of interaction between sulfuric acid and 2 models of PS material are analyzed. The evident decrease in surface activity of the pulmonary surfactant after its contact with the acid at concentrations approaching 0.001 M may be considered as an indicator of the adverse effect, which can result in several health problems. The presented approach can be used as a method of assessing pulmonary toxicity of any substances present in the breathing air.

Opis:
This article presents an experimental investigation of physicochemical interactions of novel liposomal drug carriers intended for inhalation with model lung surfactant system. The research was done with the use of maximum bubble pressure (MBP) method to measure changes of dynamic surface tension of pulmonary surfactant system after contact with liposomal colloids made of lecithin and lecithin/cholesterol (3:1 w/w) before and after 5 and 10 minutes of nebulisation by pneumatic nebulizer. What is important to point, MBP method allows the discussion of measured phenomena with reference to the time scales characteristic for the changes of alveolar surface area during the breathing cycle. Obtained results may have a potential application during design and development of new therapeutic liposomal formulations for treatment of respiratory as well as systemic diseases.

Opis:
The work discusses physicochemical phenomena related to interactions between the inhaled particles and the surface of pulmonary fluid which contains the lung surfactant. Dynamic surface phenomena which arise due to periodical variations of the interfacial area during breathing cycle are the extraordinary feature of this system and they are strictly related to the mechanics of ventilation and the pulmonary mass transfer processes. Presence of foreign material such as inhaled micro- and nanoparticles with different size, surface properties and morphology may alter these phenomena which may have some health consequences. This effect is discussed on two examples: mineral particles (CeO2) and carbonaceous particles emitted from diesel engine running on two different fuels. Two experimental methods of research in this field are presented: the Langmuir balance and the oscillating pendant drop. The results show the sensitivity of dynamic surface properties of the lung surfactant on exogenous materials which may be introduced to the respiratory system by inhalation of dusty air. Some physicochemical interpretation of these results is presented.
