Opis:
The human sera often contain substances which interfere in the course of immunochemical reactions. It is essential for the control sera used to determine concentrations of antigen of the prostate not to contain such ingredients. The aim of this study was to test the control sera, three producers, containing low (N) and high (P) concentrations of prostate antigen (tPSA). As a factor blocking the interfering actions, the TRU Bloc Meridian Life Science, Inc. reagent was used which contains antibodies against mouse protein and rheumatoid factor. The sera with a low concentration of tPSA demonstrated the presence of interfering substances.

Opis:
Probabilistic Safety Analyses (PSA) are a supplementary analytical tool used worldwide more and more in order to quantitatively assess the effect of hazards on the overall result regarding the safety of industrial installations, in particular nuclear power plants. In that way PSA provides a reliable basis for decisions on the necessity and the benefits of safety improvements. In the recent past, the existing methods and tools with respect to determining the site-specific risk of nuclear power plants have been comprehensively extended and further enhanced. The focus of extending the existing PSA methods was on external hydrological hazards with flooding potential. For systematically considering hydrological hazards within PSA a systematic approach has been developed. The paper demonstrates the extended approach in the example of a nuclear power plant site with different flooding risks.

Opis:
An as far as possible exhaustive conceptual approach has been developed to systematically address all kinds of internal and external hazards and their potential combinations in Level 1 PSA in a comprehensive manner. The approach assumes a comprehensive generic compilation of hazards being available. By means of site-specific screening process it is decided which hazards need to be analysed in detail by means of probabilistic methods. The requested extension of the plant model is carried out by a systematic approach for those hazards to be analysed in detail. For this purpose, lists of hazard relevant structures, systems and components and their failure dependencies according to the hazards are derived. The comprehensive extension of Level 1 PSA by hazards is demonstrated at the example of plant internal fires.

Opis:
Methane recovery from gaseous mixtures has both economical and ecological aspect. Methane from different waste gases like mine gases, nitrogenated natural gases and biogases can be treated as local source for production electric and heat energy. Also occurs the problem of atmosphere pollution with methane that shows over 20 times more harmful environmental effect in comparison to carbon dioxide. One of the ways utilisation such gases is enrichment of methane in the PSA technique, which requires appropriate adsorbents. Active carbons and carbon molecular sieve produced by industry and obtained in laboratory scale were examined as adsorbent for methane recuperation. Porous structure of adsorbents was investigated using densimetry measurements and adsorption of argon at 77.5K. On the basis of adsorption data, the Dubinin-Radushkevich equation parameters, micropore volume (Wo) and characteristics of energy adsorption (Eo) as well as area micropores (Smi) and BET area (SBET) were determined. The usability of adsorbents in enrichment of the methane was evaluated in the test, which simulate the basic stages of PSA process: a) adsorbent degassing, b) pressure raise in column by feed gas, c) cocurrent desorption with analysis of out flowing gas. The composition of gas phase was accepted as the criterion of the suitability of adsorbent for methane separation from gaseous mixtures. The relationship between methane recovery from gas mixture and texture parameters of adsorbents was found.
Z danych adsorpcyjnych wyznaczono, posługując się równaniem Dubinina i Raduszkiewicza parametry: Wo, Eo, Smi, a powierzchnię SBET z równania adsorpcji wielowarstwowej Brunauera, Emmetta i Tellera. Stwierdzono zależność pomiędzy stężeniem metanu a porowatą strukturą przebadanych adsorbentów.

This article presents a new class of copolymerizable photoinitiators containing vinyloxycarbonyl groups, known such as organic carbonate or carbamate. Novel copolymerizable photoinitiators have been prepared through the reaction between vinyl chloroformate and hydroxyl groups containing photoreactive derivatives such as benzophenone-, acetophenone-, benzoine-and anthrachinone-derivatives. The main emphasis is given to the influence of this new class of unsaturated photoinitiators on UV-crosslinking process of acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA). Moreover, the paper describes the influence of various parameters such as UV-initiated crosslinking time and concentration of unsaturated photoinitiators on relevant PSA properties like tack, peel adhesion and shear strength (cohesion).

In this study, after the pulse shape calibration of a liquid scintillation counting (LSC) spectrometer (Quantulus 1220), the efficiency was determined depending on sample quenching parameters. Then, gross alpha and beta activities in two spiked water samples obtained from International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) were used for the validation of the ASTM D7283-06 method, which is a standard test method for alpha and beta activity in water by LSC. Later, the drinking water samples (35 tap water and 9 bottled water) obtained from different districts of Ankara, Turkey, were measured. The maximum gross alpha activities are measured to be 0.08 Bq/L for tap waters and 0.13 Bq/L for bottled waters, whereas the maximum gross beta activities are found to be 0.18 Bq/L for tap waters and 0.16 Bq/L for bottled waters. These results indicate that these drinking water samples are below the required limits, which are 0.1 Bq/L for alpha emitting radionuclides and 1 Bq/L for beta emitting radionuclides. As a result, gross alpha and beta activities in drinking water of Ankara were determined accurately by this validated LSC method. It is also worth noting that LSC is a rapid and accurate method for the determination of gross alpha and beta activities without requiring a tedious sample preparation.

The manuscript describes synthesized of photoreactive UV-crosslinkable solvent-borne acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA) based on butyl acrylate (BA) and copolymerizable photoinitiator 4-acryloyloxy benzophenone (ABP) characterized by molecular mass in the range of 180 000 to 480 000 Dalton. These copolymers were tacky but possessed insufficient cohesive strength after UV-crosslinking to be useful as PSA. They resulted in materials having a balance of cohesive and adhesive characteristics required of good PSA. Some of the parameters affecting the pressure-sensitive adhesive properties of the copolymer are: amount of the 4-acryloyloxy benzophenone, molecular mass of the polymeric components, UV-reactivity and such important properties like tack, peel adhesion and shear strength.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to briefly introduce the probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) of nuclear power plants (NPPs), its scope, main concepts and application to a real case. The results of analysis presented here have been obtained by the Probabilistic Safety Analysis Group (GPSA) at the National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ, Otwock) as a part of the work done for the Polish National Atomic Energy Agency (NAEA). As a reference, NPP Surry Unit 1 (USA), equipped with 800 MWe Westinghouse triple-loop PWR (pressurized water reactor), has been chosen. The emergency coolant injection (ECI) function availability following the small break loss of coolant accident (SBLOCA) was thoroughly analyzed. The approach and data, which were adopted for the selected part of the SBLOCA sequences, were those used in the U.S. NRC Reactor Safety Study (WASH-1400). As a result of this study, the SBLOCA event tree, including ECI systems, i.e. high pressure injection system (HPIS) and auxiliary feedwater system (AFWS) reliability models, was developed and quantified. The probability of each accident sequence was evaluated using Saphire v.8, the PSA software by U.S. NRC. The choice of the software was based on earlier PSA software study. The failure probability of at least one of the considered safety systems – P(FAIL) is equal to 5.76E-3 and the most pessimistic accident branch (unavailability of both HPIS and AFWS) is about 0.05% of P(FAIL). These results were obtained based on assumption that the SBLOCA has occured. The most significant failure components are those corresponding to charging pumps unavailability, loss of electric power and human errors.

The present report reports on the process of the removal of organic solvents in the polymerisation reactor, thin-layer evaporator, and twin-screw extruder for the production of the solvent-free acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA). New applications and technical specifications stimulate the continuous development of new methods of manufacturing of non-solvent self-adhesives. The new synthesis of 100% acrylic systems includes solvent polymerisation and finally a removal of volatile organic compounds in a special extruder, polymerisation vessel or an industrial evaporator. The removal process requires controlling such relevant parameters as temperature, pressure and volatile organic compounds concentration.

The present paper discloses a novel photoreactive solvent-free acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) systems, especially suitable for the so much adhesive film applications as the double-sided, single-sided or carrier-free technical tapes, self-adhesive labels, protective films, marking and sign films and wide range of medical products. The novel photoreactive solvent-free pressure-sensitive adhesives contain no volatile organic compounds (residue monomers or organic solvent) and comply with the environment and legislation. The synthesis of this new type of acrylic PSA is conducted in common practice by solvent polymerisation. After the organic solvent are removed, there remains a non-volatile, solvent-free highly viscous material, which can be processed on a hot-melt coating machine at the temperatures of about 100 to 140°C.
