Opis:
Treatment of the soil by plants (phytoremediation), associated with the production of biomass for energy purposes, carries a number of significant problems with a practical and technical point of view. They concern mainly the way of the thermal conversion of biomass to energy production in an efficient and environmentally safe way. One way may be gasification. This process involves the conversion of organic matter into a combustible gas mixture by partial oxidation at high temperature under the influence of the gasifying agent (air, oxygen, steam, or mixtures of these components). Gasification aim is to obtain a combustible gas. Unfortunately, the formation of gas also accompanied by the formation of solid and liquid waste products. The paper presents the results of basic physico-chemical properties of solid (ash) and liquid (tar) waste products of the gasification process of the heavy metal contaminated energy crops. The gasification process has carried out in a laboratory fixed bed reactor. Two types of energy crops: Miscanthus x giganteus and Sida hermaphrodita were used. The experimental plots were established on postindustrial site - former sewage sludge dewatering area (Leipzig site, Germany). The results show that the gasification process, promotes the migration of harmful substances such as heavy metals from the fuel to the solid phase.
W pracy przedstawiono rezultaty badań podstawowych właściwości fizyczno-chemicznych stałych (popiół) i ciekłych (smoły) produktów odpadowych pochodzących z procesu zgazowania roślin energetycznych uprawianych na terenie zdegradowanym ekologicznie.

The influence of sewage sludge incineration temperature on the formed ash constitution was examined. The comparative extraction tests of two differently prepared ashes (laboratory and industrial) were carried out in order to verify if the parameters of sewage sludge incineration influence the extraction selectivity of phosphorus compounds. The laboratory ash (A(lab)) were prepared from sewage sludge incinerated at 950°C on a laboratory scale while the industrial ash (A(ind)) comes from thermal utilization system of the sewage sludge at the Gdynia Sewage Treatment Plant, which uses fluid-bed furnace incineration at 850 - 900°C. It was found that the temperature and the conditions of the sewage sludge incineration process have an effect on the usage properties of the formed ash. Despite the twofold lower Fe content in the industrial ash than that of the laboratory one, its content in extracts after phosphoric acid leaching is 4.7 times higher. The lower values of PO4^3- leaching degree from the industrial ash than the laboratory ash were observed, as well as a decrease of extraction productivity.

Opis:
Mineral matter of coal causes serious operational problems related to ash de- position in coal fired power plants such slagging and fouling, and so it has become the main subject of study in terms of current utilization. Moreover, the standardized tests currently used as the preferred predictive tools for slagging properties of coal sources have been lately reproved in the literature and un- certainties arrive due to the poor repeatability and reproducibility. That is why, methods for determining the sintering temperatures are being extensively investigated across the industry. This study focuses on the electrical properties of coal ash and its relation to the ash sintering process, where physical and chemical processes take part inside the material. The following methodology is based upon the continuous registration of the changes of resistance measured as an AC and DC property. The proposed laboratory stand allows measuring ‘in situ’ a coal ash sample being heated to analyse its electrical properties. It was found that the values measured are temperature dependent and could reflect the chemico-physical changes in the material, which may directly suggest the transformation of the intrinsic properties, giving insight into the sintering process.

Opis:
Soils of the tropics are generally acidic mainly due to the high and intensive rainfall that causes excessive loss of the basic cations. High soil acidity is often a limiting factor for plant growth. Liming is the most widely used method to neutralize acidity and improve crop performance. A field trial was conducted at two locations in the University of Calabar Teaching and Research Farm, Calabar, to determine the effects of local liming materials on soil properties and yield of waterleaf. Seven treatments consisting of wood ash (WA), oil palm bunch ash (OPBA), cocoa pod ash (COPA), periwinkle shell ash (PSA), cassava peels ash (CAPA), and carbide waste (CW), each applied at 8 t /ha, and a control (no lime applied) were laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The result showed increase in soil pH from 4.5 before experiment to 5.93 in the plot treated with wood ash. Over all, soil organic carbon, available phosphorus, basic nutrients (Ca, Mg, K, Na) and base saturation were significantly (P < 0.05) increased in plots treated with lime materials. Plant height, number of leaves, number of branches, stem girth, leaf area, fresh and dry matter yield of waterleaf were all significantly increased. However, the highest mean fresh yield of 4.61 t/ha obtained from the WA treated plot was not significantly (P > 0.05) higher than the yield of 4.36 t/ha obtained from OPBA treated plots, but was higher significantly than other treatments. The fresh yield increase was 61, 58, 46, 45, 39 and 35%, while the dry matter yield percentage increase was 63, 56, 53, 50, 42 and 22 for WA, OPBA, COPA, PSA, CAPA and CW. Therefore, for amelioration of soil acidity and better crop performance in the acid Ultisol of Southeast Nigeria, application of either wood ash or oil palm bunch ash is recommended.

Vertical barrier walls are widely used in environmental control systems to restrict the lateral spreading of liquid or gaseous contaminants and for seepage control through and beneath levees. The barrier walls are constructed in single or two phases using slurry composed mainly of bentonite, cementitious materials and water to maintain the trench stability and finally low hydraulic conductivity of barrier. A turning point in the development of slurry technology arose from research demonstrating the positive effects of blast furnace slag or fly-ashes on slurry properties in terms of reduced hydraulic conductivity. This paper presents the implementation of an experimental section of cut-off wall in the subsoil of a modernised flood embankment along the Vistula River and the results of controlling analyses of applied hardening slurry with an admixture of activated fluidal ashes from hard coal. The results of tests confirm the possibility of practical application of fluidal ashes as active components to hardening slurry and obtaining - depending on the suspension composition - of favourable technological and exploitation properties of this material.

The main source of fly ash is the energy sector. Consequently, there is a need to utilise this massive waste material. One of the proposed utilisation methods is the use of its sorption properties. The tests have been performed on coal ash token from the electrofilters of the Kielce, Lublin and Rzeszów heat and power plants. The impact of the chemical and physical activation of ash on its sorption properties has been determined. The chemical modification has been focused on the application of NaOH into fly ash under certain temperature and pressure conditions, while the physical modification has been based on periodic freezing and defreezing of moistened samples. The aim ofthe physical modification has been to simulate the impact of decay processes in ash dumping conditions on surface properties of ash with the focus on the application of ash as sorbents. The level of absorption has been tested on a model stand with a spectrofbtometric method with the use of methylene blue.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine the influence of reclamation on selected soil water properties in soils developed from lignite fly ash, deposited as a dry landfill, twenty years after forest reclamation was initiated. Five soil profiles, classified as technogenic soils (Technosols) within the fly ash disposal site of the Adamów (central Poland) power plant, were selected for this study. Disturbed and undisturbed samples (V=100 cm3) were collected from depths of 5–15 cm and 30–60 in each soil profile. The following physical properties were determined: particle size distribution, particle density, bulk density, soil moisture, hygroscopic water content, and the soil-water potential. Readily available water (RAW; difference of water content at pF=2.0 and at pF=3.7) and total available water (TAW; difference of water content at pF=2.0 and at pF=4.2) were calculated based on soil moisture tension (pF) values. The following chemical properties were determined: soil reaction, total organic carbon, total nitrogen content, carbonate content. Statistical analyses were conducted using the GenStat 18 statistical software package. The soils under study were characterized by very low bulk density, high total porosity, high field water capacity and maximum hygroscopicity. The RAW/TAW ratio values indicate very effective water retention in the soils, thereby ensuring a satisfactory water supply to the plants. However, statistical analysis did not show any clear trends in variability of any determined properties. The small differences in observed outcomes probably resulted from the original variability of the fly ash deposited on the studied landfill. Obtained results show the strong similarity of fly ash derived soils and Andosols in respect of physical and soil-water properties.

Opis:
New generation fly ashes come from the combustion of coal in fluid-bed furnaces with simultaneous sulphur-removal from gases at ca. 850°C. Accordingly, all produced ashes basically differ in their physicochemical properties from the traditional silica ones. The aim of the laboratory analyses was determining the influence of specific surface and granular composition of fluidal ash on rheological properties of slurries used for sealing up the ground and rock mass media with hole injection methods, geoengineering works and cementing casing pipes in deep boreholes. Fluidal ash from the combustion of lignite contain active Puzzolan appearing in the form of dehydrated clayey minerals and active components activating the process of hydration ashes, i.e. CaO, anhydrite II and CaCO3. The ashes have a weak point, i.e. their high water diment, which the desired rheological properties related with the range of their propagation in the rock mass cannot not be acquired for injection works in the traditional sealing slurries technology. Increasing the water-to-mixture ratio should eliminate this feature of fluidal ashes. Laboratory analyses were performed for slurries based on metallurgical cement CEM III/A 32,5 having water-to-mixture ratios: 0.5; 0.6 ; 0.7 and 0.8; the fluidal ash concentration in the slurries was 30 wt.% (with respect to the mass of dry cement). Basing on the obtained results there were determined optimum recipes of sealing slurries in view of their rheological parameters which could be applied both in drilling technologies (cementing casing pipes, closing of boreholes, plugging) and in geoengineering works related with sealing up and reinforcing ground and rock mass media.
Popioły lotne nowej generacji powstają ze spalania węgla w kotłach fluidalnych z równoczesnym odsiarczaniem gazów. Proces ten przebiega w temperaturze około 850°C.

Opis:
The goal is to understand the influence of minerals fillers on the course and performance of process of injection molding polypropylene compounds as well as on the mechanical properties of the obtained products. Three types of mineral fillers, derived from post-production waste, were used for testing. It was aluminosilicate (zeolite), fly ash and gypsum powder, all in powder form. The minerals fillers were introduced into the tested PP in a mechanical mixing process prior to the processing. During the injection molding process, inorganic fillers are subject to the same steps as plastic processing, compression, homogenization, transport. Organic fillers used in the injection process were introduced into the processed PP in the amount of 30% by weight. The test stand consists of a screw injection molding machine, Arburg AllRounder 320C. The research on the structure of manufactured materials, mechanical strength, impact resistance and hardness are presented. The laboratory tests of accelerated aging were conducted using an aging chamber. The aging temperature in the heat chamber was set to even amount of 63 oC and irradiance 0,51 W/m2. According to the standard, the aging time has been applied accordingly: 120, 240, 360 h, which conform to degradation at room temperature for 4 month, 8 month and one year. It was found that the type of mineral fillers used did not have a significant influence on the hardness of the surface of the moldings. The changes in hardness shown in the figures are primarily influenced by the properties and type of polymers used during the injection process. During the tests, differences in the mechanical strength of composites for injection molded parts made of PP with mineral fillers were observed. Filling PP with zeolite in the tested value causes a decrease in mechanical strength by an average of 10% from 24 to 21.6 MPa. Different mechanical interactions are shown by flying ash and gypsum powder fillers, increasing mechanical resistance of the composition. Flying ash increases mechanical strength by 30% on average, from 24 to 31.2 MPa. In case of gypsum powder application the resistance of PP composition increases analogically, but on average 20 %, to 29,5 MPa.

The primary aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of incorporating crumb rubber (CR) and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) additives, ranging from 0% to 5% by weight of bitumen, on the performance of a bituminous concrete mixture using the wet process. Laboratory experiments, including the Marshall test, were conducted to establish the optimum bitumen content (OBC) for the hot mix. The study focuses on determining the optimal proportions of CR and SBR to achieve maximum strength. The results show that increasing the proportions of both CR and SBR leads to significant improvements in strength, with the maximum stability recorded at 16.14 kN and a flow of 1.23 mm for a mix containing 5% CR and 4% SBR. The findings further suggest an inverse relationship between CR content and strength, while an increasing SBR content enhances strength. Consequently, the optimal proportions for incorporating CR and SBR additives are identified as 5% and 4%, respectively.

Mixtures with different bottom ash content were tested in laboratory to determine its basic physical and mechanical properties. The optimum bottom ash–dredged material mixture, built in the corps of the test dike, contains 70% of ash. The optimum bottom ash content in the mixture was chosen taking into account high internal friction angle, good compaction and reduced filtration coefficient. The maximum dry density of the mixtures was measured in Proctor test for the mixtures formed in laboratory and on samples taken from the test dike. Minimum and maximum void ratio were also determined.

Opis:
The restrictions on carbon dioxide emissions introduced by the European Union encourage experimental work on new generation materials containing smaller amounts of clinker. Currently, silica fly ash from the combustion of hard coal is widely used in cement and concrete technology in Europe and in Poland. Their wide application is mainly determined by their chemical and phase composition, especially pozzolanic activity, their high fineness, similar to cement. The aim of the research was to assess the properties of fly ash from thermal treatment of sewage sludge in terms of use in concrete technology in relation to EN 450-1, ASTM-C618-03 and ASTM C379-65T. The obtained test results confirm that the tested material has a different physicochemical composition and does not meet the requirements related to the use of ash in the production of concrete. In addition, the research showed the possibility of producing ordinary concrete, modified with fly ash from thermal treatment of sewage sludge. The average compressive strength for concrete containing 15% of ash from Cracow was set at 48.1 MPa and 49.2 MPa after 28 and 56 days of maturation, for ash from Warsaw at 42.0 MPa and 45.1 MPa, and for ash from Łódź at 36.2 MPa and 36.2 MPa. The determined concentrations of heavy metals are below the maximum values to be met when discharging waste water into the ground or water, the leaching limits required for accepting inert waste for disposal and for substances particularly harmful to the aquatic environment. On this basis, it was found that the migration of heavy metals from concretes with ash addition to the aquatic environment is insignificant and should not be a significant problem.

Opis:
In this study, the possibility to modify low density polyethylene (PE-LD) with fly ash (FA) was tested. Four series of PE-LD composites filled with 1, 5, 20 or 50 wt % of FA were prepared by injection molding. The samples in each of the series differed in particle size of the filler used (0—15 µm, 15—30 µm, 30—60 µm). The influence of amount and the particles size of filler on morphology, mechanical properties, thermal stability and flammability of the composites were investigated. The results show that composites with the addition of FA in the amount up to 20 wt % are characterized by good mechanical properties and processability, and also smaller than the pure PE-LD, flammability.
W ramach pracy zbadano możliwości modyfikacji polietylenu małej gęstości (PE-LD) za pomocą popiołów lotnych (FA). Metodą formowania wtryskowego przygotowano cztery serie próbek kompozytów PE-LD zawierających 1, 5, 20 lub 50 % mas. FA.

Opis:
Modification of polymer materials by various kinds of fillers is presently applied very often in massive production. This is due to the need for materials with better properties and lower prices for parts. One of the newest solutions is the filling of polymers with fly ash. This results in a change in products properties and reduction the amount of waste in the form of ashes. This article shows the results of investigations of thermomechanical properties of polyamide 6 modified by fly ash from the combustion of biomass. Comparative analysis of unfilled polyamide and polyamide composites with the addition of 5%, 10% and 15% of fly ash was performed. The specimens were obtained using injection moulding technology. The commercial name for the Polyamide 6 used in this study is TARNAMID T-27 and was manufactured by Zakłady Azotowe Tarnów. Fly ash manufactured by GDF Suez Energia Polska S.A. was applied as a filler. The investigations of mechanical properties were made using a harness by pressing ball method, impact strength by Charpy method and tensile strength. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), softening temperature by Vicat, and colour investigations were also performed. Pictures of microstructure were made.
