Opis:
This study was focused on forward osmosis batch and forward osmosis flowing processes to remove heavy metal (Co+2 ions) from wastewater. Cellulose triacetate (CTA) membrane was used as flat sheet for forward osmosis process. Potassium chloride KCl with different concentrations was used as draw solutions. The experimental work was divided into two parts. Forward osmosis flowing process as first part, was discussed under different operating parameters studied, such as the concentration of draw solutions 10–20 g/l, concentration of feed solutions 15–150 mg/l, temperature of feed and draw solutions 20–50 ºC, pH of feed solution from 2 to 10, feed and draw flow rate were maintained at 50 l/h, and pressure was maintained at 0.25 bar gauge. Forward osmosis batch process as second part, was discussed under different operating parameters, such as the concentration of draw solutions 10–120 g/l, concentration of feed solutions 15–150 mg/l, temperature of feed and draw solutions 20–50 ºC, and pH of feed solution from 2 to 10. The results showed that the water flux increased along with the draw solution concentration, and temperature of feed and draw solutions and decreased with the increasing operating time of experiment, concentration and pH of feed solution. The value of rejection efficiency after 4hrs reached 81.19% for the FO flowing process and 73.19% for the FO batch process.

Channels selective for potassium or chloride ions are present in inner mitochondrial membranes. They probably play an important role in mitochondrial events such as the formation of ΔpH and regulation of mitochondrial volume changes. Mitochondrial potassium and chloride channels could also be the targets for pharmacologically active compounds such as potassium channel openers and antidiabetic sulfonylureas. This review describes the properties, pharmacology, and current observations concerning the functional role of mitochondrial potassium and chloride channels.

Channels selective for potassium or chloride ions are present in all intracellular membranes such as mitochondrial membranes, sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum, nuclear membrane and chromaffin granule membranes. They probably play an important role in events such as acidification of intracellular compartments and regulation of organelle volume. Additionally, intracellular ion channels are targets for pharmacologically active compounds, e.g. mitochondrial potassium channels interact with potassium channel openers such as diazoxide. This review describes current observations concerning the properties and functional roles of intracellular potassium and chloride channels.

Opis:
The experiment was founded in the spring of 1999 on the grey brown podzolic soil created from boulder clays. The trees of ‘Golden Delicious’ were planted on rootstock M 26 at 3.5 ×  1.2 m spacing (2381 trees ha⁻¹). The first factor in the experiment consisted the levels of potassium in the arable soil layer: 12, 16 and 20 mg K∙100 g⁻¹ of soil d.m., on the basis of annual chemical analyses. The second factor of the investigation was three forms of potassium fertilizers: potassium chloride (KCl), potassium sulphate (K2SO4) and potassium nitrate (KNO3). Each year the analyses of macro- and microelements in the soil and leaves were made. The controlled of potassium fertilization made the possible to maintain the planned potassium levels in the soil. Different potassium levels did not cause the significant differences in yielding of the trees. Different potassium levels and fertilizer forms did not cause any significant changes in flesh firmness, soluble solids, in the weight loss of fruit after harvest as well after storage. The using of fertilizer in the form of potassium sulphate caused an increase of the participation of fruit with bitter pit.
Doświadczenie założono wiosną 1999 r. na glebie płowej wytworzonej z glin lekkich zwałowych. Drzewa odmiany Golden Delicious na podkładce M.26 posadzono w rozstawie 3,5 × 1,2 m (2381 drzew·ha⁻¹). Pierwszym czynnikiem doświadczenia był założony poziom potasu w glebie: 12, 16, 20 mg K 100 g⁻¹ gleby, oznaczonego metodą uniwersalną. Drugim czynnikiem doświadczenia były trzy formy nawozów potasowych: sól potasowa (KCL), siarczan potasu (K2SO4) i saletra potasowa (KNO3). U owoców z drzew nawożonych siarczanem potasu, w większym stopniu wystąpiła gorzka plamistość podskórna w porównaniu do owoców z drzew kontrolnych nie nawożonych potasem.

Opis:
In this study, investigated were the effects of NaCl (60 mmol/dm-3) and NaCl supplemented with different salts (5 mmol/dm-3 CaCl2, CaSO4, CaCO3, KCl), on growth of two maize varieties (Cyrkon and Limko). After 7 days of cultivation in nutrient solution the growth response to salinity of both maize varieties was similar. NaCl led to a dramatic decrease in growth of plants (approx. 50% reduction in fresh and dry weight of root, and 70% reduction in fresh weight of shoot). Addition of extra Ca2+ or K+ to nutrient solution containing NaCl did not definitely improve the growth parameters of maize. However, among the tested salts, CaCl2 had a beneficial visual effect on maize seedlings. In other cases the plants showed noticeable symptoms of salt damage. In long term exposure to salinity (two weeks) growth of Cyrkon was more inhibited than Limko. Comparison of growth responses in short-term exposure to salinity (7 days) with long-term (14 days) showed that in Cyrkon variety the negative effects of NaCl were intensified and addition of CaCl2 to salinized solution had not positive effects on growth. On the contrary, in Limko variety, there was a significant improvement in growth (especially in root dry weight). This fact indicates that during longer exposure to salinity Limko was able to adapt to those conditions. Salinity caused a significant decrease in leaf nitrate reductase activity (60% and 30% reduction respectively in Limko and Cyrkon). Addition of CaCl2 to salinized nutrient solution resulted in greater enzyme inhibition in Cyrkon (50% decline in relation to plants grown under sole NaCl), and 30% increase in Limko. Inhibition of nitrate reductase activity did not cause a decrease in concentration of soluble protein in maize leaves.

Opis:
The effect of chemical treatments with acetic anhydride, potassium chlorate, sodium hydroxide and zinc chloride on the properties of Oil Palm Petiole Fiber composites was studied. The untreated and chemically treated Oil Palm Petiole Fiber (OPPF) was used in fabricating natural fiber/HDPE composites using injection molding machine. The chemical treatments on OPPF enhanced its chemical compositions and morphology. It was observed that the cellulose content at the peak for different treatment are 58.4%, 56.7%, 55.2% and 51.5% at 4wt% concentration for NaOH, KClO3, C4H6O3 and ZnCl respectively. The composites produced with chemically treated fibers performed better than the untreated one. The highest tensile strength of 44.2 Mpa, 39.1 Mpa, 35.6 Mpa, 31.2 Mpa and 25.5 Mpa was obtained at fiber content of 29 wt% for OPPF treated with NaOH, KClO3, C4H6O3, ZnCl and untreated OPPF respectively. Water absorbed by the untreated fiber was high compared to the chemically treated fiber. The chemical treatment created a better interfacial bonding and could be responsible for the improved mechanical properties.

Opis:
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of higher conductivity of nutrient solution created by nitrate or chloride salts of potassium and calcium on growth characteristics of pepper plants (Capsicum annuum var annuum) during four months of growth period. Two EC5 and EC8 dS/m of Hoagland nutrient solutions were prepared using various salt combinations, namely: KCl + CaCl2, KNO3 + CaNO3, and KNO3 + CaNO3 + NaCl. Hoagland nutrient solution with EC 1.8 dS/m served as a control. Higher conductivity treatments had different effects on pepper plant growth. The most significant reduction in growth parameters of plant height, shoot fresh weight, fruit yield and nutrients uptake was in plants treated with KCl + CaCl2 particularly at EC8. Application of KNO3 + CaNO3 particularly at EC5, showed no difference as compared to the control regarding many growth parameters. Application of KNO3 + CaNO3 at EC5 resulted in higher shoot fresh weight compared to the control. All salinity treatments, except from KNO3 + CaNO3 at EC5, reduced the fruit yield compared to the control. Treatments of KCl + CaCl2 and KNO3 + CaNO3 + NaCl particularly at EC8 of nutrient solution, resulted in higher leaf proline concentration, catalase and peroxidase enzymes activity compared to the control. Other conductivity treatments showed no difference in catalase or peroxidase enzymes activities. Significantly the lowest amount of leaf N, K, Mg and Ca was in KCl + CaCl2 at EC8. On the other hand, the highest leaf macronutrient concentrations were in KNO3 + CaNO3 at EC5 and/or EC8 that showed only higher leaf N and Ca values compared to the control. Leaf micronutrient concentrations were the highest in KNO3 + CaNO3 at EC5 that generally showed no difference with control plants. However, application of KCl + CaCl2 particularly at EC8 and to less extent KNO3 + CaNO3 + NaCl at EC8, reduced the leaf micronutrient concentrations. Application of KNO3 + CaNO3 at EC5 increased and KCl + CaCl2 or KNO3 + CaNO3 + NaCl at EC8 decreased the leaf Fe concentration compared to control plants.

In summary, the nutrient requirements of the premature infant are not well defined, but the CPS Nutrition Committee has provided a systemic framework for describing recommended nutrient intakes. These current recommended intakes appear to provide safe quantities of nutrients that support intrauterine growth rates. Still uncertain, however, is the extent to which the recommended intakes lead to the provision of energy and nutrients in quantity and composition in amounts that allow the premature infant to achieve all aspects of normal in utero development, especially that of the nervous system.
