Opis:
Karol Wojtyla (1920–2005), later to become Pope John Paul II (since 1978), was one of the greatest contemporary thinkers. He was a Christian philosopher and Catholic theologian. His thought exerted an in! uence on diverse generations and representatives of many cultures, religions and nations. He was an authority not only for Catholics but also for many infidels and even atheists. He often made controversies because of His firm opinions. He was an aim of liberal as well as conservative critique. The liberals criticized Him due to His uncompromising and conservative attitude to female priesthood, homosexuality, contraception and abortion. The conservatives accused Him of apologizing and conciliatory tone of His voice in relationships with other religions, especially with Jews and Muslims. Because these parts of His thought became most controversial, they were and usually are commented on and analysed by world mass media. But few people found Him a leading contemporary theoretician of civilization despite the fact that He constructed a coherent theory of civilization that is unfortunately distracted in His numerous papers. And my article is dedicated to this theory. I would like to present the core of His civilization’s conception.

The paper tries to answer the question whether John Paul II was an apologist of Christianity. Moving along scholastic methodology, the paper progress along three  stages, exploring a negative  statement (videtur quod non),  justifying a positive assertion (sed contra), to formulate a conclusion (ergo). Through this methodology the paper argues that Pope John Paul II was the defender of Christianity. This methodology allows thorough study of the highlights of the pontificate of this Great Pope and on the basis of counter-points to bring out a more clear answer to the research question.

The Twentieth Century provided the religious and irreligious alike with tremendous challenges in regards to belief. Evil and carnage were pervasive and the Church was in decline. In that cultural moment rose an interpreter of that challenge who theodicy was clear and efficient in answering the complex challenge of evil in the modern world. John Paul II, more than almost any other figure of the age, addressed the vexing issue of evil in the modern world. In the corpus of his writing mankind comes to know evil through an act of memory, remembering from where evil sprang, and what evil has done in man to separate him from his creator. And mankind comes to terms with identity of evil as seen and experienced through the act of suffering. Through processing memory, and examining identity, mankind can discover how Jesus Christ’s work on Calvary places us at the threshold of victory.

Pope John Pauls II is the most famous person in Polish history. He has been acclaimed as one of the most infl uential leaders of the 20th century. It is widely accepted that he was important in ending communism in Poland and eventually all of Europe. He also helped Poland to enter European Union. After his death the Church in Poland feels like an orphan, but sees chances in the heritage, which John Paul II left for the Church in his own Homeland.

The aim of this article is to present the reactions of the Polish and German press to the death of Pope John Paul II, compare and analyze them. This approach allows to understand the differences between Polish and German perception of religion, particularly Christianity and the Catholic Church. Poland and Germany have different religious traditions, a different relationship to the church and to church dogma, rituals and piety. This may be observed as the different ways of looking at the death of Pope John Paul II in Polish and German newspapers.Probably these perceptual differences ensued from the paternal figure of the John Paul II and special emotional Polish attitude to the deceased Polish Pope.

During his pontificate, Pope John Paul II strongly supported the idea of “civilization of love”. To the Polish Pope, the existence of ‘the civilization of love’ was the foundation of a humane world in the context of a civilization depreciating the value of the human being. This article addresses the concept of “the civilization of love”, with a special focus drawn to the aims, principles and fundamental assumptions of “the civilization of love.”

Opis:
In Jesus Christ, the human person finds greatness, dignity and worth of humanity. This article reflects on the doctrine of the great African bishop, St. Augustine of Hippo and Pope John Paul II. It discusses the truth about Jesus Christ, the Redeemer of humankind. The concept of redemption as represented by the bishop of Hippo is in essence sacerdotal and sacrificial as it is ultimately expressed by the sacrifice of the Cross. The Cross of Jesus Christ manifests the great and merciful willingness of God towards the fallen human person who is the slave of sin. The triple victory of Christ: over sin, death and Satan, restores the human person to life in the communion with God.

Pope John Paul II in his oral and written teaching emphasised that Jesus Christ is the Redeemer of every human being and the same time underlined the value and dignity of every person, as well as his/her calling. In the 21st century, it is still worth recollecting the depth of teaching of John Paul II, especially the truth about the human being and his/her vocation through the mystery of the Redeemer. Therefore, this article will present some points from the documents written by Pope John Paul II, which refer to the Christian vocation of a lay man.

Opis:
The author draws attention to the value of truly human encounters in the process of evangelization. The development of mass media does not change the fact that many people are lonely, left to their own fate. The anonymity of WhatsApp or Facebook and other communication applications does not generate lasting interpersonal relationships. Meanwhile, evangelization should cultivate the value of specific, personal and lasting interpersonal encounters. A human being is created to live in a community. Therefore, authentic, unplanned encounters can become a moment of faith sharing. The author sees the evidence of this thesis in the practice of the annual benediction of houses in the parish of St. Marcella in Rome. This form of encounter, as well as other (on the street, on the bus, on the beach) can initiate something that belongs to the action of the Holy Spirit. To make this possible, every Christian must first experience a personal friendship with Jesus.
Tymczasem ewangelizacja powinna pielęgnować wartość konkretnych, osobistych i trwałych spotkań międzyludzkich. Ludzka istota jest stworzona by żyć we wspólnocie.

Opis:
Odpowiedzialność – poczucie odpowiedzialności – człowiek odpowiedzialny, to określenia podstawowe w refleksji humanistycznej, akcentujące wartość człowieka, jego wolność i podmiotowość, zdolność postępowania uświadomionego, celowego, wynikającego z przyjętych wartości.
“Responsibility”, the “sense of responsibility” and a “responsible person” are some of the basic notions in the humane reflection, which highlight the valueof a human being and their freedom, subjectivity and ability to act consciously, purposefully and in line with accepted values. Essentially, the question of responsibility should be perceived as a kind of an “inner realm” within a person’s mind. This sense is important both for the individual and for their environ ment and subject to inevitable two-way awareness-modeling interactions. This is why we should seek answers to questions about the subject and implications of responsibility of a man of science. The scholar has a specific responsibility and obligation to share not only their resources of scientific knowledge but also the wealth of their humanity. Science can make sense and be meaningful only when it is recognized as capable of discovering the truth and when the good of humanity is put in its center. Hence, honesty on the part of the scientific community is not only crucial to the inherent cohesion and integrity of science but also necessary for keeping it credible and trustworthy.

Opis:
The teachings of Holy Father John Paul II constantly remind us of the importance of human dignity. The anthropological focus of John Paul II is an essential element of his thoughts. The human being in the image of God, has a unique, inherent value. It was always God’s plan that men, despite being creatures, would freely participate in God’s inner life - in Love. The dignity and value of humanity is established in creation, but is fully realised and expressed in the redemption of Jesus Christ. Therefore, the author of this article presents the person who faces modern challenges, but in the light of the ministry and teaching of Pope John Paul II. This is a direct introduction to the new international scientific journal “The Person and the Challenges: The Journal of Theology, Education, Canon Law and Social Studies Inspired by Pope John Paul II”. This journal is being published at the Theology Faculty, Section in Tarnów of the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Cracow since 2011 - the year of the beatification of the Holy Father John Paul II, which also implies and guarantees, that it will become a platform for exchanging ideas, evaluations, reports and studies on the person and contemporary challenges in the light or having regard to the teaching of John Paul II.

Opis:
The present article examines Józef Tischner’s idea of upbringing (wychowanie) in establishing the new awareness of solidarity among the Polish workers and people through an awakening to conscience. The present moment served as a revolutionary alternative to socialism. I look at Tischner’s critique of Marxism and the central issue surrounding base and superstructure. Then I turn to his recovery of the Polish tradition of ethical ideals, especially in the person of Maximilian Kolbe and John Paul II. The text provides a detailed analysis of the chapter on upbringing in The Spirit of Solidarity. Tischner’s notion that upbringing is a personal bond established in trust to live in hope for improvement in mind and heart is placed in the context of the solidarity as a social bond establishing an ethical community transcending the political quest for power and the need to find an enemy. The text analyzes the various counterfeit forms of education in order to deepen our awareness of the meaning of authentic upbringing. Salient points of his teaching are discussed in conclusion.
