Anal fistula (AF) is a pathological connection between anus and skin in its surroundings. The main reason for the formation of anal fistula is a bacterial infection of the glands within the anal crypts. One of the modern techniques for the treatment of fistulas that do not interfere with the sphincters consists in implantation of a plug made from collagen material. We are presenting the first Polish experience with a new model of biomaterial plug for the treatment of anal fistula. We also point out key elements of the procedure (both preoperative and intraoperative) associated with this method. In the authors’ opinion, the method is simple, safe and reproducible. Innovative shape of the plug minimizes the risk of its migration and rotation. It also perfectly blends with and adapts to the course and shape of the fistula canal, allowing it to become incorporated and overgrown with tissue in the fistula canal. The relatively short operation time, minor postoperative pain and faster convalescence are with no doubt additional advantages of the method. Long-term observation involving more patients is essential for evaluation of the efficacy of the treatment of fistulas with the new type of plug.

This paper presents issues concerning the selection of spark plugs for engines fuelled with natural gas. There are discussed the specific conditions for proper ignition and combustion o f natural gas in SI engine. The new model of spark plug for ignition of natural gas-air mixture was designed and manufactured in collaboration with Iskra Zakłady Precyzyjne Sp. z o. o. from Kielce. The way of assessing of the performance of the new spark plug after test operation in a bus after 10 thousand km, 15 thousand km and 30 thousand km is presented. These tests allow preparing mass production of spark plugs for professional ignition system for SI engines fuelled with natural gas. New spark plugs will provide a longer service life compared to previously used. They also make it possible to eliminate the extinction of the arc between the electrodes and an electrical misfire in subsequent cycles of engine operation. As a consequence, fuel consumption reduction and reduction of emissions of unburned hydrocarbons into the atmosphere is expected. Apositive effect of the application of new spark plugs can be also longer engine service life. The introduction of the new spark plugs contributes to fulfil the strategy elaborated by EU which foresees the effective use ofalternativefuels, especially natur al gas which is good alternative for gasoline and diesel oil because of possibility of fulfilment of European emission and noise standards.

In this study, cylindrical, conical and hemispherical molds were used to form flat thermoplastic sheets which are 1.5 mm in thickness. The effect of plug assist on thickness distribution was investigated. The sheets were formed with and without plug assist. Then thickness distributions on thermoformed products were obtained for two experimental procedures by a digital caliper (Resolution: 0.01 mm). As a result, plug assist thermoforming provides more uniform thickness distributions than negative forming.

This article describes evaluation principles of individual parts of the ignition system, using conventional diagnostic systems, based on evaluation of current and voltage waveforms. By means of the practical test, diagnostics, measurements and subsequent analysis it was proved that thermovision plays an important role in diagnostics in on-line check automotive equipment. By comparing the non-standard warming behaviour of a part of the electrical system with combination with time highvoltage method, it is possible to diagnose a fault and also check the operating mode of the system. Sample thermogram of the temperature distribution of the ignition coils and analysis of high-voltage ignition curves with faulty spark plugs is given in the part of the paper of nondestructive diagnostics with a difference in temperature. Analysing the fault condition of ignition systems, using the method conventional diagnosis of high-voltage pulse waveforms and also the method of thermovision diagnostics, we can adequately evaluate the functionality of the electronic system and its individual components. In some cases, with one coil ignition systems, we cannot use the conventional method and therefore it is preferable to proceed to the analysis of temperature fields.

New technology of micro-jet welding could be regarded as a new way to improve mechanical properties of plug welds. The main purpose of that paper was analyzing of mechanical properties of plug welds made by MIG welding method with micro-jet cooling. The main way for it was comparison of plug welds made by MIG welding method with micro-jet cooling and plug welds made by ordinary MIG welding method. It is interesting for steel because higher amount of acicular ferrite (AF) in weld metal deposit (WMD) is obtained in MIG welding method with micro-jet cooling in relation to ordinary MIG welding method. This article presents the influence of the cooling medium and the number of micro-jet streams on mechanical properties of the welded joint. Mechanical properties were described by force which is necessary to destroy weld joint.

The motivation of this work was to define the reburning potential of sewage sludge gasification gas (syngas). Numerical simulation of co-combustion process of syngas in hard coal-fired boiler has been done. All the calculations were performed using the Chemkin program. Plug-Flow Reactor model was used. The calculations were modelled using GRI-Mech 2.11 mechanism. The highest NO conversions are obtained at the temperature of about 1000-1200 K. The highest reduction efficiency was achieved for the molar flow ratio of syngas equal to 15%. The combustion of hard coal with sewage sludge - derived syngas reduces NO emissions and the amount of coal needed to produce electricity and heat. Advanced reburning, which is a more complicated process gives efficiency of up to 80%. The Calculations show that the analyzed syngas can yield better results.

The VINCY Cyclotron is under construction at the Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences, Laboratory of Physics, Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro. One of the most difficult problems to solve is the magnetic field shaping in the central region of the machine in a wide range of field levels. The latest measurements showed a very large magnetic field depression in the central region. The following shimming elements are used for the field shaping in the central region: a central plug and a spacer ring between the sectors and the median pole plate. These elements should both release enough vertical space for the inflector and the RF electrodes and produce a field bump in the very center of the machine. Concerning this region, one has to mention the following facts: sectors are absent or very reduced, and the small gap between the sectors restricts remarkably the possibilities of producing a field bump. Therefore, the design of these elements is the most critical one. Optimization of the central plug gap affects both the vertical sparking probability and the beam dynamics at higher harmonic modes. The redesign of the magnetic structure of the central region relied solely on the detailed 3-dimensional calculations to speed up the experimental shimming procedure. Gamma scanning and radiotracer applications are very effective and inexpensive tools to understand and optimize the process as well as troubleshoot the various types of problems in many chemical, petrochemical industries and refineries. These techniques are non-invasive; hence, the problems can be pinpointed online, which leads to reduce the downtime, schedule the shutdown and maintenance of the plant equipment, rendering huge economic benefits. In a leading refinery of India, the catalytic cracking unit (CCU) was malfunctioning. It was suspected by the refinery engineers that the catalyst powder was being carried over to the fractionator, which could have led to erosion of the fractionator column internals resulting in their rupture, and consequentially, to the fire hazard. To understand the flow behaviour of the catalyst powder and to ensure the mechanical integrity, catalyst accumulation and choking, both radiotracer study and gamma scanning of the CCU reactor was carried out. The reactor consists of a riser, three primary cyclones and three secondary cyclones. Gamma scanning of the reactor was carried out with the help of an automatic gamma scanner using 1.8 GBq of Co-60 sealed source. Results showed that the catalyst powder was accumulated in one of the secondary cyclones and uneven density distribution was observed in another secondary cyclone. The radiotracer study was carried out using the irradiated catalyst powder as a radiotracer, which contains 0.9 GBq of Na-24. The radiotracer was injected in the reactor through the specially fabricated injection system. Radiation measurement was done using the thermally insulated and collimated NaI(Tl) scintillation detectors located at various strategic locations coupled to a multi-detector data acquisition system. The data were mathematically analysed. It was confirmed that the catalyst powder was accumulated in one of the secondary cyclones with no flow downwards. This resulted in excess powder available to travel along with hydrocarbon towards fractionator. Since the quantity of powder released through the hydrocarbon outlet of CCU was higher than the designed value, the catalyst powder was observed in various zones of the fractionator. Mathematical modelling of the radiotracer data obtained at various locations corroborated the scanning results; also, the flow pattern was obtained. Partially blocked secondary cyclone showed plug flow with recirculation; normal working cyclone had plug flow behaviour and the vortex breaker showed parallel flow.

The paper presents results of measurements performed to determine thermal efficiency of spark ignition systems. Because of small pressure change after sparking process smali volume chamber has been proposed for measurements. A direct measurement method of pressure increment determination has been chosen. In this method one pressure chamber is used. The caloric chamber isfilledwith nitrogen, which is a neutral gas. It is preferable medium than air because it is one-component gas and it has a precisely-known value of a specific gas constant. The value of speciflc gas constant is reąuested to calculate a value of discharge energy given to the gas. In the chosen method pressure increment in the chamber during spark discharge is measured. The pressure increment in the chamber during ignition is strictly related to the energy of spark discharge. The energy balance calculations determined values of heat los s es for two types of electrodes (normal and "thin") anddifferent initial pressure (p=0 bar and p=25 bar). The maximal value of the thermal efficiency was observedfor the higher value of pressure in chamber and thin electrodes of spark ping. It was also stated, that the higher thermal efficiency for" thin " spark ping electrodes is a result of reduced heat transfer. The paper presents results of the tests carried out in the caloric chamber of 4. l cm3 filled with nitrogen at ambient temperature using PCB transducer direct measurement method. Results of the measurements done using differential pressure transducer for the same parameters like in thefirst measurement method were similar.

The rising greenhouse gas emissions at a global level have caused the increasing interest in cleaner and less oildependent transportation sources. It has been carried out a lot of researches on the alternative energy sources, like biofuels, fuel cells, wind farms, etc. and on the clean vehicles (hybrids). Most major manufacturers have successfully introduced hybrid automobiles utilizing electric motors and an internal combustion engine to improve their gas mileage. To decrease the use of gasoline even further, some hybrids are being retrofitted to allow them to be pluggedinto a standard i.e. 120-volt socket to charge the batteries and potentially to provide power back to the electric grid when needed. Plug-in Hybrid Cars offer the fuel-efficiency benefits of hybrid cars with the added feature of being able to plug-in to household electricity during rest. This allows the increased mileage and fuel savings. Plug-ins requires larger batteries than normal hybrids, which drives up their cost. Lithium-ion batteries are smaller, have a higher output of energy but are more expensive than rechargeable nickel metal hydride (NiMh), still used in hybrid vehicles. Improvement in battery storage capacity is of the most importance for the plug-ins. Plug-in technology is developed by the major auto manufacturers, with working prototypes of both plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) and plug-in electric vehicles possessing small backup gas generators. The aim of the paper has been to assess the dynamic performance characteristics of the assembly light trailer - car with classic combustion engine (in the first case) or PHEV (in the second case), using mathematical models and numerical simulations of standard driving cycles and to investigate algorithms for charging the stock battery pack.

Despite the development of hybrid and electric vehicles, a many-million population of cars with combustion engines, and particularly CI engines occurs on the roads. Also, many stationary CI engines are still utilized. Despite their improved technologies and characteristics the modern CI engines negatively affect an environment due to cold starting problems. Below 0°C, engine starts are problematic due to the decreased battery performance and the spray characteristics, the increased ignition delay time, and the engine oil viscosity. Therefore, various glow plugs are applied to facilitate this process. Types, features, and applications of glow plugs in various engines have been discussed in the paper. One case of failure of glow plug has been presented in the article, including the cause of it.

The fleet of electric vehicles is systematically growing. Many passenger car manufacturers are already reporting that after 2030, vehicles equipped with electric propulsion will account for half of the models produced. Vehicles equipped with an electric drive include: battery-powered electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles and fuel cell electric vehicles. Over the years, these vehicles have undergone constant change. The aim of this paper was to review trends in the development of pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Full electric (FEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles are promising, forward-looking technologies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and other pollution related to road transport. The powertrain of a FEV is composed of a battery, control electronics and the electric motors. A PHEV has much lower battery capacity but it contains an extra internal combustion engine and gearbox. Many argue that FEVs are more energy-efficient than internal combustion engines. However, this energy needs to be stored in heavy, large-capacity battery packs that require plenty of energy and resources to produce as well as highly polluting rare earth elements mining. In this article, an environmental comparison of FEVs and PHEVs is shown using life cycle assessment (LCA). To make the comparison realistic, two models similar in size and power have been selected: Volkswagen E-Golf FEV and Volkswagen GTE PHEV. Results show that the production of FEVs need more energy and it means more burden on the environment however during the use phase it causes less emissions. Since the local electricity production mix and, in case of PHEVs, the user behaviour highly affects the results, three different countries (Hungary, Poland and Norway) and two different use types are considered. The quantified environmental footprints as well as the break-even distances are presented. Sensitivity of the results towards the assumed conditions during the whole design lifetime of the vehicles is discussed.

Variability of the working cycle of the internal combustion engines with the combustion of homogenous mixture is a long-term problem of SI engines. The paper shows a decrease of cycle variability and an increase of the engine efficiency by using a spark plug, whose design allows the ignition of the mixture in the same way as using a classical spark plug by the high-voltage discharge between electrodes of the spark plug and at the same time increases the energy for the development of mixture combustion in the initial phase by a flame jet from a very small ignition chamber. Energy of flame jet for the mixture ignition into compression volume at engine cylinder is fully 100 times higher to energy of high-voltage discharge on the spark plug. The laboratory results of experimental works on vehicle SI engine (the visual inspection of initial phase of burning, course of cylinder pressure, engine power data) are showed. On basis performed tests has been projected the new design of the spark plug with the integrated combustion chamber. According to our engineering design was made the new spark plug with the ignition chamber like functional samples in company BRISK. Proving test with this new spark plug was performed on two different test engines at Department research laboratory on Technical University of Liberec. The experiments confirm the await results: the engine characteristics has been significantly improved. New design of spark plug with integrated chamber it was registered at Bureau of industrial ownership at Prague.
