The functioning of societies involves the generation of large amounts of municipal waste. This study analyses the amounts of pollutants emitted during waste incineration at selected waste incineration plants in 2022. Four plants were analyzed, including three with the highest waste processing efficiency (Copenhagen, Poznan and Kraków) and one with the lowest efficiency (Konin). The choice of the factory in Copenhagen was also dictated by its strategic location in the city center. Analysing the emissions from the selected plants it can be concluded that environmental safety was maintained and none of the plants exceeded the permissible emissions value.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to assess usability of composts made of sewage sludge and either straw or leaves used as substrates for growing zonal pelargoniums. The study plants ‘Hot Pink’ cv. of Survivor group and ‘Fire’ cv. of Graffiti group were grown in 5 different substrates. The control substrate was high peat (100%) deacidified with chalk and dolomite up to pH 5.8–6.0 and supplemented with 2.5 g·dm-3 of Azofoska multicomponent fertilizer. The other four substrates contained two types of composts: SSRS – sewage sludge, straw (1:1, v/v) and SSL – sewage sludge, leaves (1:1, v/v), mixed with high peat at two different proportions, 1:3 (v/v) and 1:7 (v/v). Chemical composition of the substrates was investigated and they were supplemented with nitrogen and potassium as recommended for pelargoniums. Plant morphological parameters were evaluated during flowering. They included plant height and diameter, number of shoots and leaves, leaf assimilation area and leaf weight. Leaf chlorophyll and carotenoid content was also estimated. Inflorescence related parameters included inflorescence diameter and inflorescence stem length, number of flowers per inflorescence and flower diameter. All inflorescences formed over 10 weeks of flowering were counted. Plant ornamental value was assessed using a five-score bonitation scale. The investigated composts were found to be useful components of the substrates for zonal pelargonium production. Irrespective of the compost share, the tested substrates significantly affected most of the evaluated morphological traits. The substrate containing the compost made of sewage sludge and straw (SSRS) and peat (1:3, v/v) was found the most beneficial for pelargonium foliage, i.e. the number of leaves, their fresh weight and assimilation area. Leaf chlorophyll and carotenoid content in the pelargoniums grown in the substrates containing either dose of SSRS compost did not differ from the control plants. Substrate type did not affect bonitation score of ‘Survivor Hot Pink’ cultivar. The bonitation score of ‘Graffiti Fire’ cultivar was the highest for plants growing in the substrates with either SSRS or SSL compost plus peat in 1:3 ratio (v/v).

The demand for energy increases with the development of civilization. According to popular opinion, traditional energy resources, mainly fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas), are depleted and their use causes an increase in environmental pollution, mainly greenhouse gases. Therefore, renewable energy sources (RES), such as agricultural biogas plants, which are harmless to the world around us, are gaining importance. The European Union pays great attention to environmental protection and soil protection (organic fertilization with digestate, biogas plants) and energy issues. It emphasizes the increase in the share of energy from renewable energy in the total energy consumption. In EU countries, energy issues are regulated by relevant directives and the so-called Green and White Paper [1].

Opis:
Growing costs of ship operation and actions taken to reduce the emission of harmful components in exhaust gases make designers seek more effective methods of utilizing substantial amounts of waste energy in marine power plants. One such method leads to the steam turbogenerator. This machine to run, however, requires substantially greater amount of steam generated in the waste heat boiler (compared to steam demand for heating purposes). It is possible to supply a sufficient amount of steam if the waste heat contained in exhausts and charge air of the main engine is fully utilized. This article analyzes the influence of some methods of using waste heat from exhaust gases and charge air on the amount of steam produced in the waste heat boiler. The analysis takes account of boundary conditions, such as steam pressure in the boiler and the minimum value of outlet gas after the boiler. The analysis is illustrated with examples of basic calculations for the waste heat boiler co-operating with a specific slow speed engine. Two variants of waste heat recovery installation solutions are considered.
Rosnące koszty eksploatacji statków oraz działania związane z ograniczeniem emisji szkodliwych składników spalin skłaniają konstruktorów do wnikliwych analiz możliwości skuteczniejszego wykorzystania zasobów energii odpadowej w siłowniach okrętowych.

Agricultural biogas plants are an important source of energy, where the substrates from agricultural crops can be used. However, these plants need a daily input of biomass in the quantities up to several dozen tons. A few years ago, the most important substrate used for biogas production was maize silage. However, currently, there is a trend to limit the use of the afore-mentioned substrate. This is mainly due to the high cost of the substrate and the conflict over the rational use of valuable soils for biomass production for energy purposes. In the paper, the author undertook the attempts to discuss the possibility of limiting the use of raw vegetable materials for energy production, replacing them with agri-food production waste.

The natural mineral resources (hard coal, sands, dolomites, lead and zinc ores) found in the Silesia and the excavation of them led to significant transformation or even degradation of the environment. The landscape of Upper Silesia was dominated by heaps created as a result of the accumulation of post-mining coal waste. These postindustrial sites are characterised by difficult conditions for the development of plant communities. Nevertheless, the heaps are spontaneously overgrowing and over time, a separate ecosystem can be observed (for heaps). The article analyzes the enzymatic activity of the substrate in relation to the selected dominant grass (Monocots) and herbaceous (Dicots) plant species. The aim of this study was to compare the activity of particular enzymes in soil substratum of the vegetation patches dominated by grass and herbaceous plants.

Opis:
Introduction/background: Waste batteries and accumulators are hazardous waste and should not be sent to landfill sites. Their presence in the waste mixture causes the release of dangerous heavy metals into the natural environment. Aim of the paper: The aim of the study is to review the processes currently used in the recycling of used batteries and accumulators, currently used in the world and in Poland, as well as installations and technologies, depending on the types, kinds and physicochemical properties of waste, and to draw attention to the ventures to prevent waste generation. Materials and methods: The paper discusses the nature of waste, storage and transport conditions, organisation of collection, processes and processing technology. The article presents examples of waste management facilities dealing with recovery and recycling of batteries in Poland and Silesia. The research was based on an analysis of legal acts, statistical data, professional literature and company experiences. The second part is a case study. Selected environmental systems presented on descriptive models are based on the results of an environment (region) system analysis. Results and conclusions: EU directives and national law force the reuse of raw materials used in their production. Therefore, one should strive to apply the most effective technologies of waste recovery and recycling. The most recommended and cost-effective is product salvage followed by material recovery, especially of scarce, rare and precious earth metals. Various processes and technologies (installations) for the recovery of raw materials from waste batteries and accumulators are used around the world. The best known are: Jogmec, Batrec, Recytec, Accurec, Everead, Inmetco, Sab-Nife, Snam-Savam, Citron, Batenus, TNO. Long battery life minimises the amount of waste, and thus reduces the burden on the environment. Therefore, in the process of producing batteries, it is important to improve the technology already at the production stage. An example is the Polish experience (Europower; Tuborg; Tuborg-Silver).

The digestate from an agricultural biogas plant is most commonly used as a fertilizer. However, many studies are being performed to develop other ways of managing this substrate. The aim of this study was to determine the biogas and methane efficiency for digestate as well as the solid and liquid fractions from separation of digestate. The material for the research came from a real scale agricultural biogas plant. The separation of the digestate into two fractions was carried out using a mechanical press. The studies on the methane fermentation process were carried out under mesophilic conditions (37–39°C) in the Institute of Biosystems Engineering at the Poznań University of Life Sciences. It was found that the biogas and methane efficiency for the raw digestate and liquid fraction obtained from its separation is very low. For raw digestate it was 2.9 m3 of biogas from 1 Mg fresh matter (FM), including 1.58 m3 methane. For liquid fraction after separation, the biogas efficiency amounted to 1.52 m3 from 1 Mg, including 0.78 m3 of methane. In turn, for the solid fraction, the biogas efficiency was 102.93 m3∙Mg-1, including 54.99 m3∙Mg-1 of methane. The research results indicate that the possibility of using the digestate solid fraction for energy production (e.g. secondary methane fermentation) or the production of solid biofuels.

Opis:
In the professional literature, there is no information about the sieve and morphological composition OFMSW (<80 mm) subjected to biological processing in MBT installations during the heating season. Knowledge about the quality of this fraction is important because it significantly affects the course of the biostabilization process. The paper presents the morphological composition, sieve composition, humidity, loss on ignition and organic carbon content of <80 mm fraction separated from municipal waste delivered to 21 MBT installations in Poland, in winter. The results show that about 1/3 of the OFMSW (34.0 ± 10.6%) mass is a fine fraction (<20 mm), mainly furnace waste. The organics share was on average 39.3 ± 10.4%. The fraction "paper and cardboard" was also present in the bulk of OFMSW, an average of 10.5 ± 4.3%. The shares of other components did not exceed 5%. The large number of batteries in OFMSM was surprising, despite their widespread selective collection. The high content of fine fraction (ashes) and inert components in OFMSW during the heating season results in low hydration and low losses of waste incineration, which may even determine their inability to be processed biologically.
W artykule przedstawiono skład morfologiczny, skład sitowy, wilgotność, straty prażenia i zawartość węgla organicznego frakcji <80 mm wydzielonych z odpadów komunalnych dostarczanych do 21 instalacji MBT w Polsce, w okresie zimowym. Wyniki pokazują, że około 1/3 masy OFMSW (34,0±10,6%) stanowi frakcja drobna (<20 mm), głownie odpady paleniskowe. Udział organiki wynosił średnio 39,3±10,4%. W dużej ilości w masie OFMSW występowała jeszcze frakcja „papier i tektura”, średnio – 10,5±4,3%.
