The gas purification by means of photocatalysis is a subject well known a profusely described in literature. Easiness and continence of application causes the photocatalysis to be used in variety of industries, however this paper considers only automotive industry application. The effectiveness of photocatalysis have been proven experimentally by vast number of researchers. However, the literature contains only the information about the level of volatile organic compounds identification and reduction. The toxicity measure in terms of living cells was not yet fully tested and described in literature. Therefore, the standard chromatography test which enables quantitative identification of volatile organic compounds was confronted with a cytotoxicity tests revealing the virtual toxicity of gases before and after photocatalysis.

Photocatalysis is an efficient and ecological method of water and wastewater disinfection. During the process, various microorganisms are deactivated, including Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, for example Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumonia, and so on, fungi like Aspergillus niger, Fusarium graminearum, algea (Tetraselmis suecica, Amphidinium carterae, and so on) and viruses. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is the most commonly used material due to its price and high oxidation efficiency; it is easy to modify using both physical and chemical methods, what allows for its wide use in industrial scale. Intensive research on novel photocatalysts (e.g. ZnO and carbon based photocatalysis like graphene, carbon nanotube, carbon nitride and others) has been carried out. The future development of nano-disinfection containing metal/metal oxides and carbon based nanoparticles should focus on: improving disinfection efficiency through different manufacturing strategies, proper clarification and understanding of the role and mechanism of interaction of the nano-material with the microorganisms, progress in scaling up the production of commercial nano-photocatalysts, determination of the extent of environmental release of nano-photocatalysts and their toxicity.

The objective of the study was to establish the configuration of the system model to allow the effective recovery of gray water by solar photocatalysis with TiO2 nanoparticles for irrigation of crops. A programmable solar photoreactor based on an S7 1500 PLC and online measurement sensors were used as materials. The inductive method was used to analyze the samples and the deductive method to determine the water quality. The research design used was experimental based on the response surface methodology (MSR) with 20 experiments, 6 of which were central experiments and 6 were axial experiments; these experiments were carried out on sunny days. As a result of the research, a gray water recovery model was obtained, part of this being an electronic system with a programmable photocatalyst, which allowed the development of the experiments. It was concluded that with a solar UV index of 12.21, a dose of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles 1.973 g/L and with an exposure period of 60.041 minutes of the solar photocatalyst to UV radiation on sunny days, gray water was recovered in 90% with a confidence level of 95% and a significance α = 0.05, which translates into excellent quality according to the water quality index established in Peru (ICA-PE).

Opis:
This paper presents the evaluation of the photocatalytic kinetics of bisphenol A decomposition in the presence of commercial titanium(IV) oxide and modified photocatalysts (composites). The following modification methods were used: mechanical mixing, calcination and impregnation. The decomposition process was carried out with the addition of photocatalysts and activated carbon at doses of 100 mg/dm3 and 25 mg/dm3, respectively. The photocatalytic process was performed in a reactor from the Heraeus Company (Warsaw, Poland) with a volume of 0.7 dm3. The reactor was equipped with an immersed medium-pressure mercury lamp with a power of 150 W (λ = 200–580 nm). The degree of bisphenol A decomposition was determined by chromatographic analysis preceded by solid-phase extraction SPE. The qualitative-quantitative analysis was performed using a high-performance liquid chromatograph HPLC (UV detector, λ = 218 nm) from Varian (Warsaw, Poland). The dependence of the BPA decomposition on the duration of irradiation was found, wherein the modified photocatalysts were the most effective (from 75 to 90% after 15 minutes). The order of photocatalyst efficiency has been proposed as follows: TiO2<.sub> < TiO2/AC < Cdextran-TiO2/AC < Cmethanol-TiO2/AC< Cethanol-TiO2/AC < TiO2-AC. The highest degree of decomposition was observed in the presence of TiO2/AC (99%). Numerous studies suggest that the results of the TiO2 photocatalytic oxidation of organic substances fit well with the Langmuir–Hinshelwood (L–H) kinetic model. The kinetic parameters of the photocatalysis process were carried out according to the L-H model. According to the pseudo-first-order parameters, the results showed that the decomposition of bisphenol A was most intensive in the first 15 minutes of the process.

Oxidative pretreatment methods such as the Fenton oxidation, ozonation, and photocatalytic treatment have been compared in reducing adsorbable organic halogens (AOX) and chlorophenolic compounds in untreated kraft pulp bleaching effluent. Their efficiency was also studied on effluent ultrafiltration fractions. The Fenton treatment removed all analyzed chlorophenolic compounds from the effluent. Ozonation and photocatalysis appeared to be much less effective methods. The efficiency of the Fenton oxidation appeared to be more pronounced in higher molecular weight effluent fractions. This suggests a novel design, where the filtration stage can be placed after the oxidation, and the high-molecular weight fraction is returned to the Fenton treatment.

Opis:
Concern for the environment and the use of renewable energy sources are the two main priorities of energy policy combined with the environmental policy based on the principles of sustainable development. Many aspects should be taken into account in the case of energy production based on biomass/biofuels, in particular the possibility of additional by-products formation. When it comes to biodiesel production, the formation of huge amounts of surplus crude glycerol may be such a problem. The well-known, traditional methods of glycerol utilization are ineffective, which was proved by the big price drop in the glycerol market. High hopes to solve this problem are placed in new technologies: bio-conversion of glycerol to various chemicals or energy carriers and photocatalytic conversion to hydrogen. The paper presents the results of some preliminary studies of photocatalytic glycerol conversion to hydrogen. The investigation was focused on proper selection of catalysts and on the search for the optimum conditions of the photocatalytic process using TiO2 doped with platinum or palladium (0.1, 0.5, 1 wt.%). The initial glycerol concentration in the solution was 4.5%. Photocatalysts were obtained by the sol-gel method. The effect of irradiation intensity was achieved by using 2-4 xenon lamps, the power of 75 W each. Gas product was analyzed by gas chromatography. The highest efficiency of hydrogen production (19.33 mmol/g of catalyst·h) was obtained for Pt doped TiO2. The production rate of hydrogen depended on catalyst concentration, the amount of the noble metal in the catalysts, the concentration of glycerol in the solution and the intensity of irradiation.

Sulfonamides are antibacterial drugs, the most commonly used in veterinary prophylaxis. To the environment, these drugs are being introduced in several ways. Sulfonamides have the capacity to accumulate in various organisms, for which they may be toxic. Even low concentrations of these drugs may lead to the formation of microbial drug resistance. The aim of this study was to determine the applicability of the process of photocatalysis for the degradation of selected sulfonamides applied to real wastewater and optimization of this method. The process of photocatalytic degradation was studied in real municipal wastewater, synthetic sewage and in distilled water. The process was carried out in open reactors that were UV-A irradiated, with the participation of TiO2-P25, a mixture of FeCl3 and TiO2/FeCl3. It was found that use of the TiO2/FeCl3 mixture brings the best results in the removal of selected sulfonamides. Influence of selected wastewater treatment processes, pH and concentrations of reagents on the efficiency of degradation of sulfonamides from wastewater has been determined. In addition, orders were designated as well as kinetics of studied reaction.

The photocatalytic process of phenol oxidation and Cr(VI) reduction in the presence of nano-silica modified titania was carried out. The activity of composites was tested using two different light sources. The photocatalysts with 10% of nanosilica showed the highest activity. The calcination temperature (200–800 °C) significantly determined the sensitivity of the obtained materials to the light source used. Photocatalysts alternately adsorbed and desorbed Cr(VI) ions from the reaction mixture during irradiation. In the one-component mixture, complete oxidation of phenol was observed using material calcined at 650 °C, after 3 h of UV-VIS irradiation. In the reaction mixture of Cr(VI) and phenol, the highest activity was demonstrated by photocatalyst calcined at 300 °C. The concentration of phenol decreased in proportion to the decrease of chromium ions. The obtained titania-silica composites showed oxidizing properties towards phenol and reductive properties toward Cr(VI) ions.

Constant increase in concentration of organic micropollutants in the water environment influences the development of methods for their effective elimination from various matrices released into aquatic ecosystems. One of widely described in literature processes for the decomposition of hardly-biodegradable pollutants is the process of heterogeneous photocatalysis. The paper presents the influence of inorganic substances on the decomposition of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (anthracene and benzo[a]pyrene), industrial admixtures – octylphenol and pharmaceutical compounds – diclofenac in the photocatalysis process conducted in the presence of TiO2. It has been shown that the presence of Cl ions did not affect the photochemical reaction of the micropollutant decomposition. Whereas, the presence of CO32–, SO42– and HPO42– ions inhibited the decolonization of octylphenol and diclofenac, while the degradation efficiency of anthracene and benzo[a]pyrene was reduced only by the presence of CO32– and HCO3 anions. The photooxidation of micropollutants in solutions containing Al3+ oraz Fe3+ cations proceeded with a much lower efficiency than that for solution without inorganic compounds. The analysis of the kinetics of the photocatalytic decomposition of selected micropollutants show a decrease in the reaction rate constant and an increase in their half-life due to the blocking of theactive semiconductor centers by inorganic compounds. In addition, the toxicological analysis inducated the generation of micropollutant oxidation by-products, which aggravate the quality of treated aqueous solutions.

Incorporation of Nd during sputtering process results in amorphous behavior, without a signifi cant infl uence on transparency and colour as compared to the undoped TiO2-rutile matrix. Nevertheless, doping with neodymium doubles the photocatalytic activity of the matrix due to higher quantity of photo-generated charge carriers and more effi cient mechanism of energy transfer.

Opis:
Heavy metal is a type of metal that has a high density and high toxicity when consumed by living things, especially humans. To prevent the impact of environmental pollution, optimal handling of wastewater containing heavy metals is required, including the wastewater from laboratories. This research aimed to study the effect of pH, catalyst dose, and irradiation time on the reduction of Copper (Cu), Iron (Fe), and Lead (Pb) heavy metals and their application to laboratory wastewater treatment. Among the Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) methods, photocatalysis was chosen to reduce the level of Cu, Fe, and Pb heavy metals where zinc oxide (ZnO) is used as a photocatalyst and the sunlight as a light source. To determine the effect of pH, catalyst dose, and time on the reduction of heavy metal levels, firstly, this research used the synthetic wastewater containing Cu, Fe, or Pb heavy metals. On the basis of the experimental results, it is concluded that the pH value, catalyst dose, and time affect the photocatalytic process, decreasing the levels of Cu, Fe, and Pb metals. The optimum pH value obtained for Cu was at pH 7–8, for Fe it was at pH 6, and for Pb it was at pH 8; in turn, the metal removal percentages were 99.46, 99.91, and 99.70%, respectively. In the photocatalysis of synthetic wastewater, high removal percentage of more than 99% was achieved by using 0.1 g/L catalyst. The optimum decrease of metals occurred in the first 15 minutes of solar irradiation where the removal percentage was close to 100%. In this study, the application of ZnO photocatalyst under solar irradiation can reduce the heavy metals content in the laboratory wastewater by almost 100%, which meets the environmental quality standard for Cu, Fe, and Pb.

The comparative experimental study has been performed of removal of pharmaceuticals such as paracetamol and ibuprofen from aqueous solution by ozonation and photochemical degradation in several types of reactors. Ozone, oxygen, and hydrogen peroxide were used as oxidizing agents. Heterogeneous photocatalysis was carried out in the presence of anatase type TiO2 catalyst. To determine the amount of radiation emitted by the UV lamps and transferred into the reactor, chemical feroxioxalate actinometric experiments were performed. The degree of the pollutant removal was monitored by HPLC, COD, BOD5, and TOC. An ecotoxic biological test of process products with Parachlorella kessleri was also evaluated. The results indicate that the removal of both pharmaceuticals is most effective by heterogeneous photocatalysis. In the UV processes, the degradation rate increased considerably when H2O2 was added. However, the addition of peroxide into the ozonation system improved the ozonation only slightly.
