Opis:
In one small mineral vein in core from borehole 144-Ż in the Żarki-Kotowice area, almost all of the ore minerals known from related deposits in the vicinity occur. Some of the minerals in the vein described in this paper, namely, nickeline, hessite, native silver and minerals of the cobaltite-gersdorffite group, have not previously been reported from elsewhere in the Kraków-Lubliniec tectonic zone. The identified minerals are chalcopyrite, pyrite, marcasite, sphalerite, Co-rich pyrite, tennantite, tetrahedrite, bornite, galena, magnetite, hematite, cassiterite, pyrrhotite, wolframite (ferberite), scheelite, molybdenite, nickeline, minerals of the cobaltitegersdorffite group, carrollite, hessite and native silver. Moreover, native bismuth, bismuthinite, a Cu- and Ag-rich sulfosalt of Bi (cuprobismutite) and Ni-rich pyrite also occur in the vein. We suggest that, the ore mineralization from the borehole probably reflects post-magmatic hydrothermal activity related to an unseen granitic intrusion located under the Mesozoic sediments in the Żarki-Pilica area.

Opis:
Several areas with hydrothermal ore mineralization are present in the Polish part of the Western Tatra Mts. Massive and disseminated sulfides, mainly minerals from the tetrahedrite group and chalcopyrite, fill quartz veins accompanied by siderite, dolomite and baryte – many of these were mined between the 16th and 18th century. This paper presents information on the mineralogy of the common sulfides and the preliminary studies of both the isotopic composition of sulfur in tetrahedrite as well as the origin of hydrothermal fluids. The most common primary sulfide minerals in the ores are tetrahedrite-(Zn) and tetrahedrite-(Fe) corresponding to Zn ranges from 1.83 to 5.87 wt.% (0.47–1.44 apfu), and Fe from 1.63 to 5.05 wt.% (0.48–1.52 apfu). The substitution of As for Sb shows maximum As content of 7.25 wt.% (1.588 apfu) which corresponds to the Sb/(Sb+As) = 0.60. Both varieties show substitutions of Bi and Hg, up 0.6 wt.% (0.049 apfu) and 0.96 wt.% (0.081 apfu), respectively, and content of trace elements: Co (max. 976 ppm), Cd (max. 735 ppm), In (max. 14 ppm). Chalcopyrite, pyrite, and galena show compositions close to the ideal formula. Differences in the content of trace elements in the studied tetrahedrite and chalcopyrite were explained by element partitioning between these minerals. The distributions of In, Ga and Sn in the studied minerals indicate that the mineralization was formed at low temperature and pressure. The homogenization temperature of the primary inclusions in quartz in the range of 120–174°C indicate the origin of mineralization in low temperature stage from low salinity fluids (up to 17.92 wt.% NaCl eq.). Stable δ34S isotopes in minerals of the tetrahedrite group suggest that the igneous fluids might be one of the sources from which ores were crystallized.

Bunter
Upper Silesian ore district
Opis:
A new association of ore minerals has been found in the Lower and Middle Triassic rocks in the vicinity of the village of Woźniki in the NW part of the Upper Silesian district. In addition to the typical Zn-Pb-Fe association in dolomites, copper sulphides have been detected in the sandstones and conglomerates of the Lower Bunter. Copper mineralization occurs in the sandstone matrix and is represented by bornite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite, tetrahedrite and covellite. High admixtures of zinc in Cu sulphides and admixtures of copper in Zn-Pb sulphides suggest a common source for the metal-transporting fluids and a single period of sulphide crystallization.

Opis:
In view of the renewed discussion on the origin of Upper Silesian Zn-Pb ores we give some comments on this subject. In our opinion the recurrently invoked post-Jurassic age of these deposits is at variance with geological facts which point to pre-Jurassic age. The source of metal-bearing solutions could be looked in deeper parts of the Earth’s crust, presumably in Paleozoic rocks, or in older accumulations of ore deposits regenerated during Triassic reorganization of crustal plates.

Opis:
Chlorite-mica-quartz schist in the Gierczyn-Przecznica area in SW Poland contains polymetallic ores which were the source of tin and cobalt in the past. This mineralogical study revealed the presence of silver-bearing minerals including members of the tetrahedrite (Ag <3 apfu) and freibergite series (3 < Ag < 8 apfu), galena (0.26–1.48 wt.% Ag), and a phase with the chemical composition of Te-rich canfieldite Ag8Sn(S,Te)6. In Przecznica Sn-sulphides are represented by stannite while cobaltite is the most abundant host for cobalt, followed by Co-bearing arsenopyrite. Glaucodot, ullmannite and members of the löllingite-rammelsbergite solid-solution series (Fe,Ni,Co)As2 also contain cobalt but are scarce in the samples. An exposure in the “Psi Grzbiet” area is characterized by the presence of Ag, Ni, Sb and Te minerals accompanied by very small amounts of As-bearing phases (represented by arsenopyrite) while the mineralogical composition in the Przecznica area is characterized by an abundance of As phases and a lack of Sb minerals. Sulphur isotopes of sulphides from Przecznica are heavier than in most deposits related to the Karkonosze Granite intrusion, while their Pb isotope signature in galena suggests an Early Paleozoic pre-Variscan affinity rather than a Variscan one.

Opis:
For a long time in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the mining of ores for the production of copper cathodes and salts of cobalt was mostly conducted in the near-surface oxidized mineralization of the Congo Copperbelt. An important part of this mineralization is found in geological settings where copper and cobalt mainly exist as mixtures of oxides and sulfides. With the depletion of surface-rich minerals, mining is taking place at depths where sulfide minerals are prevalent. Using current technologies, the hydrometallurgical processing of ores with high levels of sulfide minerals results in poor metal recovery due to their retention in process wastes. These mineral wastes have the propensity to lead to Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) when exposed to rainfall and atmospheric air. Therefore, major changes in the technologies implemented will be needed in order to guarantee higher process efficiencies while endeavoring to uphold environment safeguarding reinforcement. This work aimed to demonstrate the urgency of updating the hydrometallurgical technologies implemented for the processing of copper-cobalt ores with an emphasis put on minimizing the environmental footprint of process wastes. Four copper-cobalt deposits and downstream hydrometallurgical processes were surveyed to get a better understanding of how changes in mineralization occurring in the deposits will influence the processing technologies and practices during the management of process wastes.

Opis:
The depositional history and facies heterogeneity of the epigenetically dolomitized Middle Triassic carbonates of southern Poland are poorly recognized, and existing concepts of fluid circulation entirely overlook the primary lithology as a factor controlling fluid flow. This study reconstructs the consecutive phases of Kraków-Silesia Sub-basin history in the Anisian and highlights their influence on the development of the so-called “ore-bearing dolomite”. Extensive fieldwork and microfacies analyses were carried out in order to decipher the original depositional fabric of the ore-bearing dolomites. As a rule, epigenetic dolomitization affected a horizon of porous strata, 35 m thick and resting directly on impermeable, wavy-nodular clay-rich calcilutites of the Gogolin Formation, which represent the interval of deepest and fully marine (offshore) sedimentation. The sedimentary succession of the porous strata is bipartite. The lower part (Olkusz Beds) is composed of Balanoglossites and Thalassinoides micritic firmgrounds and peloidal packstones-grainstones, representing shoreface-foreshore facies assemblages, whereas the upper part (Diplopora Beds) consists of dolocretes, rhizolites, cryptalgal laminites, peloidal packstones-grainstones and bioturbated fine-grained dolostones, formed in a system of tidal flats and lagoons. These two parts are separated by a subaerial disconformity, which marks a sequence boundary. During emersion, the underlying deposits were subjected to meteoric diagenesis, which led to the development of moldic porosity. This combination of depositional history and diagenetic alteration determined the routes of initial migration of dolomitizing solutions on the one hand, and the location of cavern formation on the other. Owing to progressive dissolution, small caverns were changed into large karstic forms, in which the ore minerals precipitated ultimately. These findings emphasize the importance of sedimentological analysis to the understanding of the evolution of the Kraków-Silesia ore province.
