The objective of the study was to investigate the career-choice motives for one’s entering the prison service as an operational officer, and the level of physical fitness. The study was conducted in April 2015, and included 100 officers employed in Biała Podlaska prison. The examined group consisted of 93 males; aged 23-52; mean age 37.2, and 7 females aged 3-43; mean age 37.7 (30-43). 61 (61%) of the males were employed as security guards, while 39 persons (39%), including 7 females, as clerks in the administration section. The study methods included: a physical fitness test consisting of 5 physical performance tests, recommended by the regulation of the Minister of Justice, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire(IPAQ) – long-form, questions designed by the author of the paper. Career-choice motives turned out to be conditioned purely be economic incentives and the professions’ stability as opposed to other professional specialties. The respondents were fit and engaged in numerous physical activates. The factors which significantly determined the level of one’s fitness depended on: age, education, a high self-report on physical fitness, total physical activity and the number of done sports. Originality of the study is based on investigating the condition of physical fitness of prison officers with the use of currently recommended assessment methods in Poland.

The article is devoted to the discussion of selected results of the nationwide community police officers research conducted by the authors in January 2017. This research is a part of the ongoing project of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration „Community police officer closer to us”. The analysis was based on the answers provided by 5,400 respondents from all over the country to the following questions: Should the role of community police officers be to carry out social prevention tasks? Are community police officers satisfied with their job as community police officers? How do they assess their interpersonal communication skills? Do they think they have prestige in the local community? Do they participate in meetings with the local community and how do they characterize the police mission? The results will be processed in 17 reports from the national community police officers research. The application of conclusions from the results of qualitative and quantitative research conducted all over Poland in 17 garrisons will have a significant impact on the dialogue between the authorities and community police officers, determining the expectations of first contact officers, their problems, strengths and weaknesses. The research carried out will increase the effectiveness of the “Community police officer closer to us” programme, one of the basic programmes of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration implemented in order to build trust between the authorities and a citizen. The research also resulted in two monographs on the functioning of the district division in Poland. The authors’research focuses on the partnership of community police officers services with the local community for internal security, taking into account the role of community police officers social and educational activities, and on drawing a professional portrait of the community police officer who is closer to people, solves problems of local communities and carries out activities in the social and educational area.

Background: Police officers meet many stressors as part of their occupation. The psychological resource "sense of coherence" (SOC) protects against ill-health, but its impact on coping resources for stress situations has not been studied in the population of police officers. Different approaches to investigate the significance of SOC for different outcomes have been identified in literature, leading to some difficulties in the interpretation and generalization of results. The aim was therefore to explore SOC and the coping resources, and to examine the significance of SOC for various coping resources for stress using different models in a sample of Swedish police officers providing on-the-beat service. Materials and Methods: One hundred and one police officers (age: mean = 33 years, SD = 8; 29 females) were included, and the Orientation to Life Questionnaire (SOC-29) and the Coping Resources Inventory (CRI) were used. The dependent variable in each regression analysis was one of the coping resources: cognitive, social, emotional, spiritual/philosophical, physical, and a global resource. Global SOC-29 and/or its components (comprehensibility, manageability, and meaningfulness) were investigated as independent variables. Results: All CRI and SOC-29 scores except for that of spiritual/philosophical resources were higher than those of reference groups. Manageability was the most important component of SOC for various coping resources in stress situations used by police officers. Conclusion: A deeper study of manageability will give useful information, because this component of SOC is particularly significant in the variation in resources used by police officers to cope with stress. Salutogenesis, the origin of well-being, should be more in focus of future research on workplaces with a high level of occupational stress.

We examined the relationship between perceived workload and performance by evaluating the responses of police officers to 4 different draw-and-shoot tasks in a night field training exercise which was part of their regular training regimen. Sixty-two police officers volunteered to participate. Results demonstrated an associative trend among 3 tasks where shooting performance decreased and workload increased as the tasks became more complex. However, performance on 1 specific shooting task did not correlate with any of the other 3 tasks, and in this 1 exceptional case, insensitivities were observed in which workload increased but performance remained constant.

Mobile police officers perform many of their daily duties in their vehicles. Combined workspace inflexibility and prolonged driving create potential musculoskeletal injury risks. Limited research exists that quantitatively describes postural and load exposures associated with mobile police work. The purpose of this study was to characterize officer activity during a typical workday and identify opportunities for ergonomic intervention. Digital video of traffic officers (N = 10) was used to classify postures according to work activity. Cumulative time in 10 activities was calculated, and a time-history of driver activity documented. Most (55.5 ± 13.4%) time was out of the vehicle, and 22.3 ± 10.5% was spent in single-arm driving. On paper documentation and mobile data terminal use were identified as in-car activities that may benefit from targeted interventions. The primary contribution of this study is characterization of daily mobile police activity and the identification of possible intervention strategies to mitigate physical exposure levels.

The foundation of the social communication system of the Polish police is the press officers of district and city departments, who maintain regular contact with journalists of local and regional media, and incidentally also with national or international mass media. The aim of the 2022 survey was to determine the media relations activities, techniques and tools used by officers. All press officers in the police garrison in the Silesian Voivodeship participated in the research project. 100% of press officers took part in the survey. Responding to the expectations of journalists police officers prefer direct contact with journalists, including 52% by phone. Although press officers consider social media to be a good method of contacting the public (30%), they do not use it themselves in contacts with journalists. They prefer to use the official police website (28%). Police spokesmen, due to the information they have, gain the attention of the mass media and do not have to use modern communication techniques to attract journalists. Maintaining constant contact with journalists, press officers also assessed the level of their professionalism. According to the respondents, TV journalists are characterized by the highest professionalism (41%). In second place are press and radio journalists with a similar number of indications (27% and 24%). The professionalism of Internet editorial staff was rated the worst (8%).

The rate at which students are dropping out of schools in recent time is worrisome and it calls for serious interventions from educational stakeholders. Education is very expedient for the development of an individual as well as that of any society that aspires to be relevant in the 21st century. Education, at all levels, is associated with a set of positive factors for work life, social and personal wellbeing as well as the improvement of the economy of any nation. It can then be deduced that education is sine qua non to the development of an individual and that of any nation. Dropping out of school is not only detrimental to the individual but also increases the likelihood of unemployment, violence activities, kidnapping thuggery, armed robbery and other social vices. This study, therefore, investigated the influence of family dysfunction and emotional intelligence on school dropout intention among police officers’ children in Lagos state. This study employed a survey research design. The study made use of simple random sampling technique. Two hundred and twenty (220) respondents comprising 98 males and 122 females from two police secondary schools in Lagos state were used for the study. Three Standardised instruments were used in collection of data for the study. These are: School dropout intention scale (alpha = .84) family dysfunction scale (alpha = 0.85) and emotional intelligence scale a = .88). Data from the study were analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) and multiple regression analysis (ANOVA). The result revealed that the two independent variables had significant relationship with dropout intention among police officers’ children. Family dysfunction (r = .902, p < .05), emotional intelligence (r = .383, p < .05. Also, the two factors jointly contributed 41.2% of the variance to dropout intention among the police officers’ children.(Adj. R2 = .412) In terms of magnitude of contribution, family dysfunction made the most significant contribution (Beta = .223, t = 2.429, p < 0.05) followed by emotional intelligence (Beta = .106, t = 2.115, p < 0.05) Based on these findings, the study concluded that dropout intentions of police officers’ children are determined by family dysfunction as well as emotional intelligence. Recommendations and suggestions were offered to various significant stakeholders.

Purpose: The aim of this article is to show the course of the process of selecting candidates for police officers, along with the indication of the conditions of this process and the possible reasons for the current difficulties in obtaining the desired number of candidates for service in the Police forces. The main research problem took the form of a question: How does the process of selecting candidates for service in the Police proceed and what are the conditions of selection – reasons for difficulties in obtaining candidates for officers meeting specific competence requirements? Design/methodology/approach: This article has been prepared on the basis of the analysis of legal acts regulating the process of selecting candidates for officers, data presented by the Central Statistical Office, the Independent Self-Governing Trade Union of Police Officers, information provided on the websites of the Central Police Headquarters, Voivodeship Departments and press articles published on regional and nationwide web portals. Findings:. The results of the conducted studies allowed to identify the process of recruiting candidates for service as well as the conditions of selection - reasons for difficulties in obtaining candidates for officers meeting specific competence requirements. The process of recruiting candidates for service, consisting of different stages of the recruitment process, has been constructed in such a way that it is possible to verify both the physical and mental predispositions of future officers. Such a procedure allows eliminating those candidates who have competence gaps regarding the established competency profile of the police officer. Originality/value: The results of the conducting studies allowed the author to identify the reasons for difficulties in obtaining candidates for officers.

One of the most evocative social problems, very rarely examined by researchers, is the readaptation of people released from correctional facilities. Ex-prisoners are still perceived by society as worse individuals who threaten public security. Recidivism mainly results from the lack of proper support from services and institutions created to reduce the risk of reoffending. The time after leaving prison is very important and difficult because it influences the ex-convict’s future life. Preparation for the social reintegration of prisoners begins already in the correctional institution and should be continued after their release. Cooperation of probation officers and correctional officers is an inseparable and integral aspect of educational and resocialization work carried out in the open environment.
Readaptacja osób opuszczających zakłady karne jest jednym z najbardziej istotnych problemów społecznych, a jednocześnie jednym z najrzadziej podejmowanych. Nadal w świadomości społecznej były skazany to ktoś „gorszy”, zagrażający bezpieczeństwu publicznemu. Powrotność skazanych do przestępstwa często wynika z braku pomocy i wsparcia ze strony wielu służb i instytucji do tego powołanych. Okres po opuszczeniu więzienia jest bardzo ważny i trudny, ponieważ wpływa na życie danej osoby. Przygotowanie do społecznej reintegracji więźnia rozpoczyna się już w zakładzie karnym i powinno być kontynuowane po jego zwolnieniu. Współpraca kuratorów sądowych z funkcjonariuszami służby więziennej stanowi nieodłączny i integralny aspekt pracy wychowawczo-resocjalizacyjnej, realizowanej w środowisku otwartym.

In the second half of the sixteenth and the first half of the seventeenth century, the Kingdom of Sweden was almost constantly engaged in armed conflicts with neighbouring kingdoms. Both offensive and defensive wars were characteristic of the Swedish foreign policy from 1550s to 1650s. The same period witnessed the emergence of the Swedish Empire because, due to these conflicts, Sweden was able to acquire new domains in the Baltic region and to expand its territories in both east and south. These geopolitical realities pushed all Vasa kings into multiple projects aiming to rationalise Sweden’s army and its military strategy as well as to develop the acquired areas in various ways. Our article presents two development project examples of this emerging empire (1) Scottish officers (the Swedish Crown acknowledged the military expertise of Scottish troops as well as their officers and tried to harness this experience for Sweden), and (2) the planned modernisation of Ingria through German and Dutch colonisation and agricultural development. The article examines the needs and expertise expectations that the Swedish Crown directed towards these foreign groups. The emergence of Sweden as a European empire did not occur in a geopolitical vacuum. International contacts and the influx of European expertise into Sweden were important factors in the building of the Swedish dominion in the Baltic region. By focusing on these foreign expert groups, one operating in the military world and the other in the agricultural sphere, this article illustrates the functions and roles that the Swedish Crown expected foreign experts to have on the eastern frontier of early modern Sweden.

Objective: There are two theories (by Horowitz and by Foa) which attempt at explaining the process of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) development by information dissonance. The purpose of the present study was to verify these theories via cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. Materials and Methods: The study based on a cross-sectional design was performed on a representative group of Polish firefighters. The study using a longitudinal protocol was conducted among police officers. The level of PTSD was assessed using the Questionnaire for PTSD Measurement (K-PTSD). The sense of coherence (SOC) was measured with the Polish adaptation of the Orientation to Life Questionnaire by A. Antonovsky. Results: In the cross-sectional study, the correlation coefficients between K-PTSD and SOC were –0.35 (p < 0.001) in the group of firefighters and –0.47 (p < 0.001) in that of police officers. In the longitudinal study, the relationship between SOC and PTSD symptoms appeared to be curvilinear and had the U-letter shape. Therefore, we used ANOVA for statistical analysis. Unfortunately, the F(2.31) = 1.900 and p > 0.05 indicated that the tendency we observed was not statistically significant. Conclusions: We would like to propose two possible explanations for the difference in the relationships between SOC and PTSD symptoms obtained in the studies employing the cross-sectional and the longitudinal protocols.

This article shows some factors which allow logistics officers of the Polish Armed Forces to develop on professional grounds, essential in preparation for carrying out tasks according to the various conditions of the contemporary and future battleground. The author, with his professional background in the achievement of a principal military career, presents the procedures that are obligatory in the process offdling the official posts for the officers. In the later part of the article, the formal and legal conditions of the development of logistics corps have been elaborated. At the end, an attempt to set the directions of the professional improvement of logistics officers has been undertaken.
W artykule ukazano czynniki umożliwiające rozwój zawodowy oficerów korpusu osobowego logistyki wojsk lądowych Sił Zbrojnych Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej, istotny dla przygotowania do realizacji zadań w zależności od zmieniających się uwarunkowań współczesnego i przyszłego pola walki. Autor z uwagi na posiadane doświadczenie kadrowe w realizacji zasad pragmatyki kadrowej przedstawia procedury obowiązujące w procesie obsadzania stanowisk służbowych przeznaczonych dla oficerów. W dalszej części omówione zostały uwarunkowania formalno-prawne rozwoju oficerów korpusu osobowego logistyki. Na końcu podjęto próbę określenia kierunków doskonalenia zawodowego oficerów logistyki.

Opis:
Lack of court protection for officers whose current service relationship is substituted with a form that is less beneficial – an employment relationship, should be seen as a violation of their right to trial. A labour court, by definition, is not an appropriate court when it comes to cases of entering into or the termination of service relationships having a legal and administrative character. This court can judge cases concerning the employment relationship of an employee but fundamentally does not have jurisdiction to assess the establishment and termination of a legal and administrative relationship. Therefore, sending customs officers to labour courts causes the transformation of a service relationship into an employment relationship to slip out of court control.
Artykuł dotyczy „przekształcenia” stosunku służbowego funkcjonariusza uprzednio zatrudnionego w służbie celnej w stosunek pracy. Owo przekształcenie odbywało się na podstawie ustaw reformujących administrację celno-skarbową, które weszły w życie w 2016 r. Według utrwalonej już linii orzecznictwa sądów istota „przekształcenia” polega na tym, że funkcjonariusz pełniący służbę na podstawie stosunku administracyjnoprawnego wskutek oferty złożonej przez pracodawcę staje się pracownikiem. Przekształcenie stosunku służbowego w stosunek pracy odbywa się zatem bez uprzedniego wygaszenia stosunku służbowego w drodze aktu administracyjnego.
