Opis:
The issue of static load arises as a result of the optimization of activities and the natural development of industry towards digitization, implementation of technologies in the production process and elimination of manual work. Due to the inherent need to facilitate or completely replace manual work with machines, human activity focuses on the development, design, and management of these machines. This article presents the results of a survey of the representation of professions with the primary seated position in the selected industrial enterprise in comparison with the most frequently registered professions in specific sectors. Likewise, the authors also deal with the elimination of static loads arising from the performance of sedentary work through ergonomic chairs offered on the Slovak market. The paper presents the results of the market analysis focusing on the parameters of office chairs, which are marked as ergonomic or health. The findings of these surveys serve as one of the starting points for the design of a complex dynamic office workplace, which the authors deal with in research at the Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Zilina.

ObjectivesIn the present study, the authors focused on the comparison of work characteristics related to the possibility of striking the right work–nonwork balance, as well as satisfaction with the actual work–life balance (WLB), negative work-to-home conflict and the quality of life related to social relationships, between a new group of on-line workers (social media or e-marketing specialists, search engine optimization or search engine marketing specialists, e-public relations experts etc.) and traditional office workers.Material and MethodsThe authors conducted a questionnaire study covering 189 on-line workers (whose work required permanent presence on-line) and 200 office workers (using the Internet mainly to communicate with other departments and to search for information).ResultsThe results showed that the on-line workers reported a significantly lower satisfaction with WLB and a higher negative work-home interaction. The authors found no differences as regards the social quality of life between the studied groups.ConclusionsThese findings confirm that technology advancement opens a new chapter in organizational psychology and occupational health, especially in the context of the emerging on-line occupations.

Opis:
Telework has become a common form of work for white-collar workers in recent years. Although the number of telework studies increases, there is still a lack of knowledge regarding telework – as the opportunities for this mode of work are developing rapidly. The purpose of the current study is to find out the spread and drivers of telework in the real estate sector. The current research uses empirical data from a survey with 127 respondents who work for real estate companies in Estonia. Data were collected through a quantitative questionnaire during 2017. Three hypotheses were presented regarding the drivers for the employees. The study confirmed that employees in the real estate sector use telework in order to save commuting time and costs, and to have more freedom and privacy. The results show that only a small number of employees have remained untouched by telework. Based on the current study on information-communication technology (ICT) and mobile devices’ daily use, telework has a high potential in the real estate sector. The decision to work remotely is usually made by workers themselves and therefore the main drivers for teleworking have been employee-centred. It is necessary to educate employees and employers concerning the advantages and risks connected with telework. That would contribute to introducing telework’s potential and suggestions to them.

Increasing numbers of workers use computer for work. So, especially among office workers, there is a high risk of musculoskeletal discomforts. This study examined the associations among 3 factors, psychosocial work factors, work stress and musculoskeletal discomforts. These associations were examined via a questionnaire survey on 30 office workers (at a university in Malaysia), whose jobs required an extensive use of computers. The questionnaire was distributed and collected daily for 20 days. While the results indicated a significant relationship among psychosocial work factors, work stress and musculoskeletal discomfort, 3 psychosocial work factors were found to be more important than others in both work stress and musculoskeletal discomfort: job demands, negative social interaction and computer-related problems. To further develop study design, it is necessary to investigate industrial and other workers who have experienced musculoskeletal discomforts and work stress.

Opis:
Objectives: This research was conducted as a cross-sectional descriptive study aimed at determining the existence of pain in the musculoskeletal system among office workers and the reasons for it. Material and Methods: The sample consisted of 528 office workers. Collection of data was achieved using a questionnaire prepared by the researchers in line with information from the literature. Results: The male and female office workers most frequently complained of pain in the lower back (55.1%), neck (52.5%) and back (53%). It was seen that out of the variables relating to the work environment, those which had the most significant effect on muscular-skeletal system pain were sitting at the desk for a long time without a break, working sitting on a chair that supported only the lumbar area and the arms, having the computer mouse at a distance from the keyboard, having the head inclined at 45° when working, working holding both forearms above the level of the desk, not taking exercise in daily life, and having a moderate or extremely stressful workplace (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The conclusion has been reached in this study that in order for office workers not to suffer musculoskeletal system pain, it is very important that the working environment should be ergonomically arranged and that various measures should be taken to ensure healthy life behavior. Opis:
Objectives Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common nerve entrapment syndrome, which since the beginning of the seventies has been linked to the keyboard and visual display unit (VDU). The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence and personal factors associated with CTS in female VDU workers in Italy. Material and Methods Participants in this study were female adult subjects, working ≥ 20 h/week (N = 631, mean age 38.14±7.81 years, mean working age 12.9±7.24 years). Signs and symptoms were collected during compulsory occupational medical surveillance. The binary logistic regression was used to estimate adjusted odds ratios for the factors of interest. Results Diagnosis of CTS was reported in 48 cases (7.6%, 11 of them or 1.7% after a surgical correction) for the incidence of 5.94/1000 person-years. In general, signs and symptoms of CTS were associated with the following demographic factors: previous trauma of upper limb (adjusted odds ratio (ORa) = 8.093, 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.347–27.904), history (> 5 years) of oral contraceptives therapy/hormone replacement therapy (ORa = 3.77, 95% CI: 1.701–8.354) and cervical spine signs/symptoms (ORa = 4.565, 95% CI: 2.281–9.136). Conclusions The prevalence of CTS was similar to the estimates for the general population of Italy. Among personal risk factors, hormone therapy, previous trauma of the upper limb and signs/symptoms of the cervical spine appeared to be associated with a higher risk of CTS syndrome. Eventually, the results reinforce interpretation of CTS in VDU workers as a work-related musculoskeletal disorder rather than a classical occupational disease. Opis:
Background Epidemiological studies have shown that employees working with visual display units (VDU) are more likely to complain about musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). The aim of this study has been to evaluate associations among MSDs and individuals and work-related factors. Material and Methods A total of 1032 VDU workers were assessed about their personal (i.e., age, working history, smoking history, physical activity) and work-related factors (i.e., predominant job tasks performed, work posture). Work environment was evaluated regarding fulfillment of the standard ISO 9241-5:1998. The investigation required a direct observation of participants (in order to accurately assess the prevalence of MSDs) and workstations. Adjusted odds ratios (ORa) were calculated by means of the logistic regression model. Results Prevalence of MSDs was relatively high (53%). In general, MSDs were significantly associated with female sex (OR = 2.832, 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.178–3.683), age ≥ 50 years old (OR = 2.231, 95% CI: 1.236–4.026), longer exposure to VDU, both as working history (10–14 years: OR = 1.934, 95% CI: 1.301–2.875; ≥ 15 years: OR = 2.223, 95% CI: 1.510–3.271) and working time (30–39 h/week: OR = 1.537, 95% CI: 1.087–2.273). Inappropriate workstation design was confirmed by the multivariate analysis as a risk factor for MSDs (ORa = 2.375, 95% CI: 1.124–5.018). Conclusions Musculoskeletal disorders were significantly associated with individual factors as well as characteristics of work environment. An appropriate design of workstations may significantly reduce their prevalence amongst VDU workers.
Materiał i metody Badanie przeprowadzono wśród 1032 osób używających VDU w pracy. Zebrano dane dotyczące cech indywidualnych badanych (wiek, staż pracy, historia palenia, aktywność fizyczna) i czynników związanych z wykonywaną pracą (najczęstsze czynności, pozycja ciała). Oceniono też zgodność środowiska pracy z normą ISO 9241-5:1998. W celu dokładnej analizy występowania MSDs przeprowadzono bezpośrednią obserwację osób badanych i ich stanowisk pracy. Skorygowane ilorazy szans (adjusted odds ratios – ORa) obliczono z zastosowaniem modelu regresji logistycznej. Wyniki Częstość występowania MSDs była stosunkowo wysoka (53%). Zaobserwowano statystycznie istotną zależność między MSDs a płcią żeńską (OR = 2,832, 95% przedział ufności (confidence interval – CI): 2,178–3,683), wiekiem powyżej 50 lat (OR = 2,231, 95% CI: 1,236–4,026) i dłuższym narażeniem na VDU – zarówno w wyniku dłuższego stażu pracy (10–14 lat: OR = 1,934, 95% CI: 1,301–2,875; ≥ 15 lat: OR = 2,223, 95% CI: 1,510–3,271), jak i większego wymiaru czasu pracy (30–39 godz./tydzień: OR = 1,537, 95% CI: 1,087–2,273). Analiza wieloczynnikowa potwierdziła, że nieodpowiednio zorganizowane stanowisko pracy jest czynnikiem ryzyka MSDs (ORa = 2,375, 95% CI: 1,124–5,018). Wnioski Występowanie zaburzeń mięśniowo-szkieletowych jest istotnie związane z indywidualnymi cechami pracownika i właściwościami środowiska pracy. Odpowiednio zorganizowane stanowiska pracy mogą znacznie zmniejszyć częstość występowania MSDs u osób pracujących przy VDU. Med. Pr. 2016;67(6):707–719
