Opis:
For several years an interesting debate has unfolded regarding the extent to which Heidegger’s thinking in Being and Time can be classified as either idealist or realist, or rather, and for many this is Heidegger’s official stance, as an attempt to overcome the presuppositions that give rise to these doctrines. One way of considering the debate regards the question as to whether the conditions of intelligibility or, as Taylor Carman calls them, the ‘hermeneutic conditions,’ that Being and Time lays out, are to be understood as access conditions to, or as metaphysical conditions of, entities. The first but not the second interpretation is compatible with a realist reading of Being and Time. For many, including me, the realist reading is the most satisfactory one, both exegetically and theoretically. Several attempts at working out a way of making sense of the transcendental conditions as access conditions have been made, starting with Dreyfus’s and Spinosa’s widely discussed paper. A very important contribution to the debate is owed to Taylor Carman’s excellent Heidegger’s Analytic, where he makes a case for a full-blooded realist reading of Heidegger’s early work. I will argue, however, that Carman’s reading is not completely successful in making sense of the conditions of intelligibility as access conditions rather than metaphysical conditions. I will present a general diagnosis of Carman’s impasse and argue that it results from a thought that has no hold in Heidegger’s way of thinking.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to draw attention to the differences in the perception of subjectivity and objectivity in the two perspectives of Catholic ethics dominant after the Second Vatican Council. Both ethical currents, i.e. autonomous ethics (Autonome Moral) and the ethics of faith (Glaubensethik) developed during the intensive theological study period around the time of the Council. The representatives of both currents interpreted some of the Council’s concepts quite differently, which also led to different results. The concept of subjectivity is closely associated with the understanding of the role and importance of conscience, while the concept of objectivity with the theory of normativity. Many eminent theologians and philosophers took part in the discussion around these fundamental issues for moral theology, among others: A. Auer, J. Ratzinger, Hans Urs von Balthasar, B. Stoecke, J. Fuchs, B. Häring, D. Mieth and others. There was also the voice of the pope at the time, St. John Paul II, who in the enc. "Veritatis splendor" outlined a framework for the further development of moral theology, critically referring to some contemporary ethical projects.

Gaston Milhaud rejects the principle of contradiction if it is conceived as an absolute and universal rule. He claims that it only holds in some narrowly defined circumstances. According to him, the greater is mental contribution to an act of cognition the more appropriate is the application of the principle of contradiction. My analysis of his views shows that he wanted to emphasize the differences between the objective reality and its mental or linguistic representations rather than undermine the logical principle of contradiction. Parallels can be noted between Milhaud’s views on contradiction and Leon Chwistek’s theory of the multiplicity of realities, as well as Kazimierz Ajdukiewicz’s concept of the cognitive role of language.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to present and explain the metaethical theory proposed by Ayn Rand. In particular, Rand’s view of ethics as necessary for human life is discussed. I also analyze the concept of value which is crucial to Rand’s ethics. I seek to demonstrate that the concept of value is rooted in the concept of life, and from this it follows that the normative sphere is secondary to the existence of living beings. Further, I introduce Rand’s argument concerning human life as an ultimate point of reference in her philosophy. Finally, I explain the conditional character of morality, and end my paper with a short discussion of Rand’s unique view on objectivity of values.

Opis:
This paper investigates the claim that developments in biological sciences require us to abandon the account of moral norms advanced by natural law theory and to embrace some version of evolutionary ethics. A brief sketch of a contemporary statement of evolutionary ethics is followed by a consideration of the two fundamental ways in which it opposes the natural law account. Both of these objections are shown to misfire: first, positing a sceptical position fails to attend to what is implicitly affirmed in the critique of ethical objectivity, and, second, the criticism of natural law’s account of marital sexual acts proceeds by way of misunderstanding. While the natural law account of moral norms is not undermined, evolutionary ethics itself is found to be untenable.
