Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the attitudes of a group of nurses towards lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out with 358 nurses working in a hospital in the northern region of Turkey between December 2016- February 2017. The data were collected using the personal information form and the Hudson and Ricketts Homophobia Scale. Kruskal Wallis, Mann Whitney U test, Single Factor Variance Analysis, ttest and correlation were used in the analysis of the data. Ethical approval was obtained from the Clinical Research Ethics Committee of an university. Results: The mean score of the scale of the nurses was found as 111.5±20.7. Nurses who stated that they did not want to communicate with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people were found to be more homophobic than the nurses who stated that they wanted to communicate with them. It was also found that the nurses who define themselves as ‘traditional’ were more homophobic than those who define themselves as ‘not traditional’ (p <0.05).The relationship between the nurses' knowledge towards lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual individuals and their attitudes towards these individuals was found to be significant similar to the previous international studies. Conclusions: The findings of this study indicate that the level of education, the level of acquaintance with LGBT individuals and the knowledge of LGBT individuals has an effect on the homophobic attitude

INTRODUCTION: The contemporary health care system is increasingly becoming more responsive to the needs of patients and their families. Patients and family members have priority in decision-making. The family witnessed resuscitation refers to offering the option to a family member to remain present at their loved ones during the resuscitation. Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of educational sessions on the knowledge, attitudes, and experiences of nurses about family-resuscitation witnessed. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A quasi-experimental study was conducted in Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The study was carried out over six months. In total, 31 participants were recruited in the study using a convenient sampling technique. Data were collected using a standard questionnaire. Sessions were conducted to educate nurses on resuscitation witnessed by the family. RESULTS: The mean age of the participants was 29.77 years. More than half (51.6%) of the participants were male. There was a significant difference between pre- and post-intervention knowledge (P=0.000), attitude (P=0.000), and experience (P = 0.000). There was also a positive association of knowledge with educational level (P=0.02), experience (P=0.001), and job position (P=0.001). Similarly, the attitude of the participants was also associated with experience (P=0.000) and education status (P=0.002). Additionally, the experience of the participants was also associated with education status (P=0.01) and Job Position (P=0.000). CONCLUSIONS: Educational interventions have a significant effect on the knowledge, attitude and experiences of nurses toward family witness resuscitation.

On one hand, the development of medicine allows to prolong the life of patients who previously had no chance for survive, on the other hand, though, it condemns some of them and their loved ones to extreme suffering. Fear of suffering is the main reason for a possible wish for euthanasia. The research aimed at measuring the attitude towards euthanasia among doctors and nurses who come in professional contact with terminally ill patients or patients versus the medical personnel who do not come in such contact. The research included: age, profession and workplace as well as personal experience in providing care to the seriously ill. The Attitudes Towards Euthanasia Questionnaire by Głębocka and Gawor was used during the research. The method consists of three scales: Informational Support, Liberal Approach and Conservative Approach. Medical stuff taking care of terminally ill patients were less conservative in their opinions than the participants from the comparative group. The intergroup differences in terms of Liberal Approach towards Euthanasia Scale were not obtained. It turned out that the age fostered the conservative approach, and working at the intensive care units or taking care of an ill relative fostered the reduction of such approach. All the respondents approve the idea of providing the patients and their families with informational support. Working in intensive care units or taking care of terminally ill relatives seems to reduce conservative attitudes towards euthanasia because persons with such experience have personally faced the multifaceted emotional and physical costs of suffering.

Introduction: Corneal transplantation is a sight restoring procedure that enhances the recipient’s quality of life. Most deceased patients in Intensive Care Units (ICU) are potential eye donors, but the number of referrals from this group remains low. Understanding how nurses view eye donation and identifying their educational needs is vital in order to increase donation rates while offering choice to patients and families. Purpose: To assess nurses’ knowledge about the identification and referral of potential eye donors. Materials and methods: An online, 18-item, questionnaire survey assessing the knowledge, training and views towards eye donation was emailed to 100 ICU nurses working in a tertiary NHS Trust. Fifty-eight percent (n=58/100) of nurses completed the questionnaire. Results: The majority of nurses (n=50/58) could not identify the medical contraindications to eye donation, just one was aware of the referral process and only two reported that they received previous training on eye donation. Overall, participants were in agreement that corneal transplants improve the recipients’ quality of life (n= 50/58) and that offering eye donation should be considered as part of end-oflife care (n=43/58). However, only seven felt confident raising the subject with relatives. Conclusion: ICU nurses play a pivotal role identifying and discussing the potential for donation. However, the results of this survey showed that the majority of responding nurses lacked knowledge, training and confidence to effectively undertake this role. Therefore there is a need for educational programmes that focus on eye donation and communication skills to be able to offer the choice to patients and families. There is also a scope for research to evaluate the efficacy of educational programmes and their impact on donation rates
