Opis:
An innovative technology of superabsorbent application in a form of agrotextile filled with polymer, called geocomposite, is a solution that allows preserving the beneficial effect of using superabsorbents with simultaneous reduction of their negative influence on soil environment. Research was carried out in 2012-2014 on one year old cuttings of Rosa‚ White Meidiland’ and Berberis thunbergii ‚Green Carpet’ in unheated foil tunnel at the Research Station belonging to the Department of Horticulture at Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences. First factor was the use of geocomposite, while the second was fertilization with full (3 g) and half (1.5 g) dose of Osmocote Plus 3-4M and 3 g of YaraMila Complex fertilizer. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of geocomposite application with the use of fertilizers on selected biometric features and fresh weight of plants. Geocomposite had the positive influence on tested shoots and roots biometric features of Rosa ‘White Meidiland’ and Berberis thunbergii ‚Green Carpet’, on the fresh weight of roots and total of both species, as well as on their root:shoot ratio. In both species there was a tendency to obtain the highest values with 1.5 g Osmocote fertilization.

Opis:
Somatic embryogenesis was studied in four spruce species (Picea abies, P. omorika, P. pungens 'Glauca' and P. brewenana) to determine if this method can be used for in vitro propagation of coniferous trees. The highest frequency of initiation of embryogenic tissue was obtained when mature zygotic embryos were used as explants. It ranged then from 10.8% (P. brewenana) to 23.75% (P. omorika and P. pungens 'Glauca'). The frequency of embryogenic tissue initiation was strongly affected by medium composition, i.e. addition of appropriate auxins (2,4-D, NAA, Picloram) and sucrose concentration (10-20 g-1"1). A lower frequency was obtained in Picea omorika (10%) when megagametophytes (endosperms with immature zygotic embryos) were used as explants. No emryogenic tissue was produced from hypocotyls, cotyledons and needles. A satisfactory frequency was achieved with the use of somatic embryos of Picea abies (30%). The proliferation of embryogenic cell lines of spruces was affected by medium type. The experiments resulted in production of somatic plantlets of P. abies and P. omorika. This enables the application of this method of spruce micropropagation for genetic and breeding research or for nursery production.

Opis:
A detailed, species-specific comprehension of plant water behavior can be a central tool to improve water management in nursery production and irrigated landscapes. Potted plants of Nerium oleander, Pittosporum tobira, and Ligustrum japonicum ‘Texanum’ were exposed to controlled increasing drought conditions in greenhouse. Water use, gas exchange, and foliar thermoregulation were monitored along the trial. N. oleander showed the most efficient response to increasing water stress, maintaining high levels of gas exchange and evapotranspiration rate during the whole trial, whereas L. japonicum emerged as the most sensitive species, with a significant drop in physiological performances already from the second day. The more aggressive water behavior of N. oleander can be compared to the one of anisohydric plants, whereas L. japonicum displays an isohydric strategy. P. tobira showed intermediate characteristics between the two other species. This work comes to provide useful tools for the management of irrigation in plant nursery and for decision making in the use of ornamental shrubs for landscape applications.

Opis:
In many strawberry production areas, traditional bare-root transplants are being replaced by plug plants produced from runners. Tips (unrooted runners) are rooted into trays filled with various substrates. The success of rooting depends on various factors such as cultivar, growing medium, air humidity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of soilless nursery to produce strawberry potted planting material. ‘Elsanta’, ’Grandarosa’ and ‘Pink Rosa’ mother plants were planted in containers and set on a special rack in the greenhouse. Emerging plantlets were clipped with metal clips in micro-pots filled with peat or coconut substrate and detached from the mother plants after 14 days. Efficiency of the nursery and quality of obtained plantlets were evaluated. Efficiency of the nursery depended on the number of runners emerging from the mother plants and the number of plantlets on the runners. The highest number of plantlets was obtained from ‘Grandarosa’ (29.3), followed by ‘Pink Rosa’ (23.1), and ‘Elsanta’ (19.5). Rooting of plantlets before detaching them from the mother plants caused all plantlets were properly rooted. Growing media used in the experiment did not have significant influence on the plantlet rooting. The greenhouse soilless system for production of strawberry potted plantlets offers an important alternative to the conventional field grown plantlets.
