Opis:
By means of microscopic analyses, it was shown that root nodules formed by Chamaecytisus podolicus exhibited all structural features typical for indeterminate nodules of temperate genistean shrubs: (i) apical nodule meristem composed of infected and non-infected domains, (ii) parenchymatous bacteroid-containing tissue with infected cells only resulting from mitotic activity of infected meristematic cells, (iii) absence of infection threads, and (iv) convoluted bacteroids singly enclosed in a symbiosome membrane. For the first time, it was shown that the nodule meristem is organized into longitudinal files of sister cells.

Gallbladder carcinoma (GBC) is a rare pathology. We reviewed our hospital database for prognosticating the patients with post-cholecystectomy abdominal wall nodule. On reviewing the database we could find 7 patients who were diagnosed with GBC after simple cholecystectomy. Three of those patients were diagnosed after evaluation of a scar site nodule. Two patients were females and one patient was male. The mean age of the patients was 55 years. Two patients underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy and one patient underwent open cholecystectomy. The average time of detection of malignancy was 10.6 months. The gallbladder was not subjected to histopathological examination in all three patients. The patients had the unresectable disease on restaging workup. Two patients had adenocarcinoma while one patient had a neuroendocrine tumor. abdominal wall nodule is a rare marker of occult gallbladder carcinoma. Subjecting every gallbladder specimen to histopathology should help in improving the survival in these patients.

Epidemiological studies on the impact of onchocerciasis control in some parts of Imo State, Nigeria was undertaken between 2008 and 2012 to determine the impact of annual ivermectin mass drug administration on clinical manifestation of Onchocerciasis. The survey took place in the nine villages of Okigwe local government area, which have base line data at Carter Center Imo/Abia project. Permission to carry out this survey was obtained from Ministry of Health as well as informed consent was obtained from the individual volunteers. Skin snip for microfilaria (mf), community microfilaria load (cmfl), physical examination, visual screening, were carried out among 960 volunteers comprising of 511 males and 499 females from age group 5-62+ in the sampled villages in accordance with the epidemiological evaluation of onchocerciasis protocol. The results shows 63.7% reduction against 47.2% nodule prevalence in 1995 to 14.3% nodule prevalence in 2012 (p<0.001). Similarly there is 36.3% reduction rate of mf prevalence from 51.8% mf rate to 33.0% in 2012 after 15 years of mass drug administration (p<0.005). CMFL is generally low among the sampled villages 0.90 mf per milligram (p<0.001). An Onchocercal symptom was found among individuals in the sampled villages 47.2%. Also mf prevalence was rare in age group 5-15(17%), subsequently increased with age and highest in age group 56-62+ (26%). However, because microfilaria (mf) was found among the subjects, is suggestive of its potential continued transmission and therefore Onchocerciasis is not yet eliminated.

Opis:
Two experiments were conducted during 2010 and 2011 main cropping seasons under different farmer fields at Pawe District of Northwestern Ethiopia in order to evaluate different commercially produced microbial inoculants, referred to as commercial rhizobial strains, on soybean yield. The first experiment was conducted with the aim of evaluating four commercial rhizobial strains (Legume fix, TSBF-531, TSBF-442 and MAR-1495) on soybean yield, while the second experiment conducted with the aim of evaluating and selecting the best rhizobial strain from the two rhizobial strains (Legume fix and MAR-1495). Non-inoculated soybean with and without the recommended rate (RR) of nitrogen (N) fertilizer treatments also included in the experiments. Treatments were arranged in a single replicate per field. Recommended rate of phosphorous (P) fertilizer was applied uniformly to all treatments. The two experiments analysis of variance indicated that there was significant difference (P < 0.05) among treatments in number of nodules, nodule weight, biomass yield and grain yield of soybean. Accordingly, the first experiment result indicated that the highest number of nodules, nodule weight, biomass yield and grain yield were recorded by using rhizobial strains of legume fix and MAR-1495. The second experiment result revealed that rhizobial strain MAR-1495 resulted consistent and highest number of nodules, nodule weight, biomass yield and grain yield of soybean. The increment in grain yield over the un-inoculated control, legume fix and full RR of N fertilized treatments recorded by MAR-1495 was 25.5, 9.7 and 9.9%, respectively. Moreover, inoculation of soybean seeds with rhizobial strain MAR-1495 also resulted to higher protein content in soybean plant tissue. Therefore, this study recommends use of the most suitable commercial rhizobial strain MAR-1495 for the study area to inoculate seeds before sowing for the production of soybean crop.

This article presents an analysis of internal forces and roll motion during a nodule loading simulation for a ship at sea. The study carried out a full assessment of ship behavior during loading, which took into account wave height and period occurrence around the Clarion–Clipperton Zone by the use of an operational efficiency index. One of the aims was to verify whether waves have an influence on excessive ship motion and internal forces during nodule loading. Two alternative loading sequences were developed and compared by taking loading time, shear forces, bending moments, roll motion and waving into account. The research shows that loading is only possible during specific sea weather conditions for the selected bulk carrier.

Opis:
During nodule development on pea roots, apoplast undergoes changes in activity of plant cell wall proteins such as expansins (EXPs). Because the accumulation of EXP protein has been correlated with the growth of various plant organs, we investigated using Western Blot and immunolocalization studies with antibody against PsEXP1, whether this protein was accumulated in the expanding cells of nodule. Immunoblot results indicated the presence of a 30-kDa band specific for pea root nodules. The EXP proteins content rose during growth of pea root nodules. Expansin(s) protein was localized in nodule apoplast as well as in the infection thread walls. The enhanced amount of expansin-like proteins in meristematic part of nodule, root and shoot was shown. The localization of this protein in the meristematic cell walls can be related to the loosening of plant cell wall before cell enlargement. Both, plant cell enlargement and infection thread growth require activity of expansin(s). Possible involvement of EXPs in the process of pea root nodule development is also discussed.

Changes in the activity of acid phosphatase (AcPase) in the apoplast of pea root nodule were investigated. The activity was determined using lead and cerium methods. The results indicated a following sequence of AcPase activity appearance during the development of the infection thread: 1) low AcPase activity appears in the outer part of cells of symbiotic bacteria; 2) bacteria show increased AcPase activity, and the enzyme activity appears in the thread walls; 3) activity exhibits also matrix of the infection thread; 4) bacteria just before their release from the infection threads show high AcPase activity; 5) AcPase activity ceases after bacteria transformation into bacteroids. The increase in bacterial AcPase activity may reflect a higher demand for inorganic phosphorus necessary for propagation of the bacteria within the infection threads and/or involved in bacteria release from the infection threads.

The paper presents validation tests for method which is used for the evaluation of the statistical distribution parameters for 3D particles’ diameters. The tested method, as source data, uses chord sets which are registered from a random cutting plane placed inside a sample space. In the sample space, there were individually generated three sets containing 3D virtual spheres. Each set had different Cumulative Distribution Function (CDF3) of the sphere diameters, namely: constant radius, normal distribution and bimodal distribution as a superposition of two normal distributions. It has been shown that having only a chord set it is possible, by using the tested method, to calculate the mean value of the outer sphere areas. For the sets of data, a chord method generates quite large errors for around 10% of the smallest nodules in the analysed population. With the increase of the nodule radii, the estimation errors decrease. The tested method may be applied to foundry issues e.g. for the estimation of gas pore sizes in castings or for the estimation of nodule graphite sizes in ductile cast iron.

Sister Mary Joseph’s nodule umbilical mass
Opis:
Introduction. Sister Mary Joseph nodule (SMJN) is a metastasis that can occur in the umbilical region due to many tumors in the abdomen. Most of the cases are of gastrointestinal system origin and are often an indicator of poor prognosis. It can be seen in 1-3% of intraabdominal and pelvic malignancies. In the literature, around 300 studies are presented, mostly in the form of case reports. Very few (7-9%) of the cases with SMJN are from pancreatic origin. In our literature review, we found that in the majority (>90%) of SMJN cases due to pancreatic tumors, the lesions originated from the pancreatic tail and/or body, and tumor marker Ca-19.9 was very high in most cases (>90%). Aim. Here, the case of SMJN seen in a patient with three different primary tumors was discussed in the light of the literature data. Description of the case. Here, our case, whose third primary malignancy was detected in the pancreas in the PET/CT examination performed to investigate the origin of SMJN in a 68-year-old female patient who had undergone surgery due to breast in 2011 and endometrium cancers in 2018 and came with umbilical metastasis, is presented in the light of the literature data. Conclusion. As a result, in our case, which was followed up due to two primary tumors, it became important to know the origin of the SMJN that occurred due to the third primary tumor detected during the CT and PET/CT examination due to the newly emerging SMJN. It is important to know the origin and histopathological features of the SMJN in order to determine the treatment to the patient

Using a sand pouch-plant infection method, populations of several species of root-nodule bacteria (rhizobia) were enumerated in eighty soils collected throughout Poland. Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. viciae (symbionts of pea, faba bean, vetch) and R. leguminosarum bv. trifolii (symbionts of clover) were detected in 77 and 76 soils, respectively. Most of these soils contained moderate and high numbers of these species of the rhizobia. Symbionts of beans, R. leguminosarum bv. phaseoli, were assessed in 76 soils; of this number 15 soils had no detectable populations of bean rhizobia and in 40 soils high or moderate numbers of these bacteria were found. Bradyrhizobium sp. (Lupinus), root-nodule bacteria of lupine and serradella, were absent in 19 soils, out of 80 tested, and 34 soils were colonised by high or moderate populations of bradyrhizobia. Sinorhizobium meliloti, rhizobia nodulating alfalfa, were sparse in the examined soils; with 56 soil containing no detectable numbers of S. meliloti and only 6 soils harbouring high or moderate populations of this species. The estimated numbers of the rhizobia in the studied soils were also related to some physical and chemical properties of these soils.
