Opis:
The radioactivity of some structural building materials, rows, binders, and final construction products, originating from Serbia or imported from other countries, was investigated in the current study by using the standard HPGe gamma spectrometry. The absorbed dose in the air was computed by the method of buildup factors for models of the room with the walls of concrete, gas-concrete, brick and stone. Using the conversion coefficients obtained by interpolation of the International Commission on Radiobiological Protection (ICRP) equivalent doses for isotropic irradiation, the corresponding average indoor effective dose from the radiation of building materials of 0.24 mSv·y−1 was determined. The outdoor dose of 0.047 mSv·y−1 was estimated on the basis of values of the specific absorbed dose rates calculated for the radiation of the series of 238U, 232Th and 40K from the ground and covering materials. The literature values of the effective dose conversion coefficients for ground geometry were applied as well as the published data for content of the radionuclides in the soil.

By-products of the combustion of coal (wastes) are often used for various types of construction (dwellings, roads, etc.). The legal regulations (The Ordinance of the Council of Ministers of 2 January 2007 “On the requirements for the content of natural radioactive isotopes of potassium K-40, radium Ra-226 and thorium Th-228 in raws and materials used in buildings for the residence of people and livestock, as well as in the industrial by-products used in the construction, and the control of the content of the aforementioned isotopes” – Law Gazette no. 4/2007 item 29) are in force in Poland. The regulations permit the possibility of utilization of raws and by-products basing upon the level of the natural radioactivity of the examined raws and materials. The article is a survey of the results obtained during the measurements of many types of raws and building materials for almost 30 years by the network of the laboratories in Poland. It is based upon the results stored in the database of the Central Laboratory for Radiological Protection (CLRP), Warsaw. The article tends to outline the radioactivity of the waste materials with respect to other raws and materials used in the construction industry. The article shows the possibilities for the use of by-products originating in the power stations and heat- and power stations (mainly ashes, slag and hinter) in the construction of dwellings and roads.

Natural radioactivity of coastal sediments could provide interesting information on sediment dynamics. Natural radioactivity measurements were performed in two areas of the Adriatic Sea littoral of Albanian cost, in the gulfs of Durres and Vlora, where complex studies were carried out in the framework of the maintenance of existing Durres harbour and the design of a new harbour in Vlora. Dynamic mapping of the gamma total radioactivity at the sea bottom sediment was carried out using a 2" × 2" NaI probe. Radiometric data were converted to lithological map, and the sand and silt distribution configuration was interpreted in terms of sediment transport. The obtained results have shown that the natural radioactivity of sediments provides qualitative data about the sediment dynamics. This cost-effective method is recommended to be used as complementary to other tracer techniques for sediment transport in coastal engineering investigations.

Opis:
In the Upper Silesian Coal Basin highly mineralized mine waters are pumped into numerous sedimentary ponds before discharge to the Vistula river. They contain elevated concentrations of natural radionuclides (mainly radium). In ponds, some fraction of radionuclides is removed from the water column by adsorption on settling particles, precipitation or co-precipitation, thus increasing radioactivity levels in the deposits. Due to fluctuations of water level and wind action, fine fraction of the deposited material can be distributed in the vicinity of ponds. Three ponds have been selected for survey of the gamma equivalent dose: Brzeszcze, Kaniów, and Rontok Duży. The lowest dose rates, below 0.33 miSv/h, were detected in the area of the Brzeszcze pond. The highest values were measured over the sediments of the Kaniow pond (8.37 miSv/h), being 30 times higher than the dose rate received by population in Poland from natural sources.

This paper reports on the abundance of primordial radionuclides (40K,232K and 238U) in characteristic lithologies from the Sowie Mountains (SW Poland). In situ gamma-ray measurements were conducted at 12 localities hosting exposed augen gneiss, flaser gneiss, granulite, homophanized gneiss, hornblendite, layered gneiss, layered migmatite, migmatic gneiss, mylonitic gneiss and mylonitic granulite. The activity concentration of 40K varied from 180 Bq kg-1 (mylonitic granulite) to 845 Bq kg-1 (layered gneiss). The activity concentrations associated with 228Ac (232Th) varied from 10 Bq kg-1 (mylonitic granulite) to 53 Bq kg-1 (homophanized gneiss), while activity associated with 226Ra (238 U) varied from 9 Bq kg-1 (mylonitic granulite) to 43 Bq kg-1 (layered gneiss). An augen gneiss adjacent to the Intra-Sudetic Fault showed the highest combined Th + U activity (89 Bq kg-1). The average Th/U ratio (3.6) calculated for gneiss outcrops of the Sowie Mountains falls within the range reported for biotite gneiss (3.5-4). Subsurface outcrops from the Walim-Rzeczka underground complex did not give noticeably higher 238U activities. The results obtained forthe Sowie lithologies are compared with those obtained by similar methods for similar rocks as reported in literature sources.

The aim of the research is to obtain preliminary information about the spatial distribution of gamma radionuclides in the soils taken from the Ojców National Park with emphasis on the behaviour of artificial radionuclides, with 137Cs as a representative. The natural radionuclides 40K, 226Ra (uranium series), and 228Th (thorium series), which are considered as background radiation, were also determined. In total, 18 soil samples were collected during the summer periods in 2015–2017, while the sampling points were selected with respect to differences in rainfall and local topography gradient. The method was based on gamma-ray spectrometry performed on high-purity germanium (HPGe) gamma detector (relative efficiency 34%). 137Cs was mostly deposited in the top soil layers, with activity in the range of 27.9÷586.6 Bq•kg–1. We found strong positive correlation of the 137Cs activity with the soil organic matter content, and at the same time, its dependence on the rainfall amount. Consequently, the soil types and local climate can control the spatial distribution of 137Cs on a small spatial scale. The quantity of natural radionuclides was highly similar in all samples with the following mean values: 38.0 Bq•kg–1 for 228Th, 33.1 Bq•kg–1 for 226Ra, and 479.9 Bq•kg–1 for 40K.

Knowledge of radionuclides concentrations in environmental media (such as common plants species) plays an important role in environmental protection and monitoring of any release of radioactivity to the environment. The activity concentrations and distribution of natural radionuclides in plants samples grown at scrap yard (A) (Al-Tuwaitha Nuclear Site) were investigated in this study. The measurements were carried out using gamma-ray spectrometry system (high purity germanium detector). The average and range of the activity concentrations of 226Ra and 40K were 0.19 (BDL to 2.92 Bq/kg) and 660.86 (510 to 796.49 Bq/kg). The radium equivalent activity, absorbed dose rate, annual effective dose equivalent, external and internal hazard indices were estimated and compared with internationally recommended values. The results of radiological hazards assessment obtained in this study indicated that the investigated plants species grown at the studied area have natural radioactivity levels well within internationally recommended limits.

The concentration of radon and its decay products in the boundary layer of the atmosphere varies and depends on many factors. One of the main factors leading to the variability of equilibrium equivalent concentration (EEC) of radon is the dynamic behavior of the atmosphere. Describing the behavior of radon concentration and EEC in the atmosphere is important for the estimation of natural human exposition (this was our original goal). The National Institute for Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Protection (SÚJCHBO, v.v.i.) has been investigating the characteristics of radon decay products in the boundary layer of the atmosphere since 1985. The measurements of EEC were carried out in places with different exhalation of radon from the subsoil. The grab sampling method, as well as continuous measurement, were applied in various areas. The determination of outdoor radon and radon daughter product (RnDP) is not easy due to very low levels of their concentrations: therefore, many methods and devices had to be modified for this type of measurement.

It is a known fact that phosphate rocks have high levels of natural radioactivity due to the presence of large concentrations of radionuclides. This work aims to estimate radiation exposure and dose levels at Al-Jalamid site in northern Saudi Arabia. Al-Jalamid area is one of the largest reserves of phosphate worldwide. Ma’aden, a Saudi Government public company, owns the mine and is responsible for all mining activities. Phosphate and soil samples collected from Al-Jalamid phosphate mining area have been analysed for their uranium and thorium content by an α-spectrometer using radiochemical techniques. The quantity of radon gas was measured both in groundwater and in the atmosphere (indoor and outdoor) at the site using a portable radiation survey instrument. Groundwater samples collected from wells surrounding the mining area were analysed using a liquid scintillation counter in addition to an α-spectrometer. Finally, it is found that phosphate rock concentrate products cannot be utilized economically based on the standards set by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), since the average activity concentration does not reach the limit set by IAEA and hence are not commercially feasible.

Opis:
Terrestrial background gamma radiation in urban surroundings depends not only on the content of radionuclides in the soil and bedrock, but also on levels of radionuclides in building materials used for the construction of roads, pavements and buildings. The aim of this study was to characterize an outdoor absorbed dose rate in air in the city of Wroclaw and to indicate factors that affect the background gamma radiation in an urban space. Gamma spectrometric measurements of the radionuclide content and absorbed dose rate in air were performed by means of portable RS-230 gamma spectrometers and at sites with various density of buildings, in the city center and in more distant districts, over pavements and roads as well as in a park, a cemetery and on four bridges. Measurements were performed at a 1-meter height. The absorbed dose rate in air ranged from 19 to 145 nGy h-1, with the mean of 73 nGy h-1. This paper implicates that terrestrial background gamma radiation depends on the type of building material used for the construction of roads and pavements and on the density of buildings shaping the geometry of the radiation source. The highest background gamma radiation was observed in the center of the city, where buildings are situated close to each other (nearly enclosed geometry) and pavements are made of granite. The lowest background gamma radiation was noticed on bridges with nearly open field geometry. Additionally, three profiles at the heights of 0.0, 0.5 and 1.0 m were arranged between two opposite walls of the hall of the Main Railway Station in Wroclaw, where the floor is made of various stone slabs. The results indicated that the absorbed dose rate in air varied, depending on the type of building material, but became averaged along with the height.

Opis:
Introduction: The systematic research of the natural radioactivity of raw and building materials has been conducted in Poland since 1980. Basing on the results of these studies, carried out by both the Central Laboratory for Radiological Protection (CLOR) and over 30 other research laboratories in our country, the national database of natural radioactivity measurements has been set up. The database is supervised by the CLOR and contains the results of the measurements for more than 42 000 samples analysed since 1980 up till now. Due to the economic development of the country, since 1990 there has been an increase in the number of the natural radioactivity measurements of raw and building materials. Objective: The aim of this article is the presentation and evaluation selected of raw and building materials in terms of radiology. Method: In Poland the possibility of using different raw and ready building materials is classified due to the value of activity coefficients f1 and f2. Activity coefficient f1 specifies the content of natural isotopes in a test material and is the coefficient of the gamma radiation exposure to the whole body. Activity coefficient f2 specifies the content of radium 226Ra (mother of isotope 222Rn) in the test material and is the coefficient of the exposure of the lungs epithelium to the alpha radiation emitted by the decay products of radon, breathed into with air by the human respiratory system. Activity coefficients are described by the natural radioactivity of potassium 40K, radium 226Ra and thorium 228Th. Activity concentration of these radionuclides is determined by the MAZAR analyser with a scintillation detector. It is a three-window analyser, which measures samples in the range from 1.26 MeV to 2.85 MeV. Results: This paper shows the values of activity coefficients f1 and f2 for a few selected raw and building materials like ash, concrete, cement and ceramics. Additionally, activity coefficients f1 and f2 for carbon are discussed. Carbon, as a precursor to a few building raws, (ash, slag, mixture of ash and slag) has been measured in significant amounts since 1996. Average value of its activity coefficient f1 was between 0.15 and 0.43 while an average index f2 was from 14.7 Bq/kg to 44.2 Bq/kg for results collected in 1980-2012. Average values of activity coefficients f1 and f2 for carbon are the lowest of all measured and compared materials described in this paper. Average value of activity coefficient f1 of ash as a by-product of coal combustion is a few times higher than for carbon and is higher than the limit value equals 1.0 for results from almost all years. Conclusions: In the paper, average value and range of dose rate for these several raw and building materials have been shown. An average dose rate is between 31.8 nGy/h for carbon up to 140.8 nGy/h for ash.
Wprowadzenie: Od 1980 roku w Polsce prowadzone są systematyczne badania naturalnej promieniotwórczości surowców i materiałów budowlanych. W oparciu o wyniki badań m.in.
