Opis:
Beyond its definition as a story or an account of a sequence of connected events and experiences that is told or written in prose or poetry form in great detail and arranged in a logical sequence, or as the practice and art of telling stories, the narrative holds a special place of honour in the West African literary space. Although comparatively few are gifted in the art of story-telling, many often participate in listening. The griots, as these story-tellers or narrators are called in the countries that make up the Old Mali Empire, still wield some respect in modern times and often tell their stories in huge festival-like settings to the accompaniment of drums and tambourines. From the Senegambia in the West to Nigeria in the East, West Africa has produced literary giants in the narrative art form. Ousmane Sembene’s God’s bits of Wood(1960) and William Conton’s The African (1960) through D.T. Niane’s Sundiata: An Epic of Old Mali (1965) and Camara Laye’s TheAfrican Child (1953) to Chinua Achebe’s Arrow of God (1964) and J.P. Clark’s Ozidi (1966) all follow this narrative tradition. Ịzọn narratives consist of both the oral and written forms. However, this paper will focus on Bina Nengi-Ilagha’s Condolences (2002), Gabriel Okara’s The Voice (1964) and “Little Snake and Little Frog” (1992).

Having written The Joke, Kundera changed the modus vivendi of the novel’s narrator who, with time, became a separate protagonist. This is connected with the appearance of the ellipsis as the main plot device, which is not yet present in The Joke. This change in the way of narrating represents another and, perhaps, a deeper dividing line in Kundera’s writing than switching to another language (from Czech to French), the change of the setting (from Czechoslovakia to Western countries) and the change of the political system (from communist to ‘imagological’) as an instrument of oppression.

Opis:
The main goal of this article is to demonstrate the significant value of using narrative interviews in research on the education of talented learners. The authors decided to highlight the value of such research in the case of a specific group of learners. However, it might prove valuable to mention the special features of that method and some challenges that can appear in such research. The authors investigate the importance of applying narrative inquiry, especially narrative interviewing, in research on talented individuals. As for the research approach, it is embedded in qualitative methods. The authors present a retrospective secondary analysis based on their previous research into talented people’s experience of education, from an approach of both writer and reviewer. The introduction contains an outline of the subject of the text. Then, a description of narrative interviews and of talented learners is presented. The research method is also characterized. The previous results regarding talented learners’ experience of education are presented. Finally, the research results and recommendations for research practice are provided. The narrative interview technique proved to be a suitable method for the social sciences. It is appropriate for research on talented learners and their experiences within the educational process. Thanks to narrative interviews, researchers can reveal many important matters, such as learners’ intellectual talents and accomplishments, their relationships with themselves and other people, and some important common patterns of their functioning, such as perfectionism or non-conformism. Moreover, the research material can very rich and researchers can interpret it in very interesting ways so that the readers (educators and parents) can understand this particular group of learners and provide them with a convenient, conducive educational environment. The final section consists of some possibilities for researchers who want to use narrative interviewing as a method of research. The authors suggest obtaining some psychological and interpretative skills and building good relationships with the narrators.

Opis:
The story of Robinson Crusoe comes to us in the guise of a first-person narrative based in part on a diary. Successor texts have traditionally adopted the same narrative situation, exploiting it in order to foreground ideas of authorship, textual authority and linguistic dominance. This essay pays particularly close attention to those Robinsonades that have not followed this pattern and have instead opted to omit meta-narration and intradiegetic narrator figures. It considers to what ends this is done in three modern Robinsonades: William Golding’s Lord of the Flies (1954), J. G. Ballard’s Concrete Island (1974), and Michael Dudok de Wit’s animated film The Red Turtle (2016).

This paper is an analytical, comparative study between James Clavell's 1975 novel, Shōgun, and the 2024 mini-series adaptation created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks under the same name. It investigates the adaptation's artful methods of storytelling and the crucial decisions made by the showrunners throughout its production. Their aetmpt to polish the rich original story written by Clavell represents an important showcase for all modern adaptations that aspire to bring new ideas into classical narratives. As the novel had been known for its tendency to divulge into, long explanatory segments about the cultural and inner workings of Japan through abundant descriptions told by an omniscient narrator and through the use of inner monologues, the TV series is left to face the challenge of fitng all of the cultural guidelines and abstract thoughts onto a diefrent frame. To compensate for its bound lacklustre textual expression, the producers are forced to cross the novelistic boundaries of the book by focusing their eofrts on the great visual potential that the story could oefr. In this research, I will explore the decisions that carried the show throughout its episodes by relying on the structural theories of adaptation and the various socio-cultural opinions of scholars and critics, which revolve around the representation of Japanese culture by Western artists. My research mainly aims to assess the level of collaboration the two art mediums are able to achieve, both thematically and culturally, in their overall contribution to the story.

The subject matter of this paper concerns the early phase of Vasily Grossman’s literary career in the mid-1930s. Prior to this period, the author proved his ability to evaluate the mechanisms of censorship and developed his understanding of what was publishable and what could be sanctioned through the publication process of his first novel (Bit-Yunan, Fel’dman 2019). The research material selected for this paper is the lesser-known short story Zhizn’ Il’i Stepanovicha [The life of Il’ya Stepanovich], published in 1935, and the aim is to provide a close reading and an interpretation key to this text. In order to expose the hidden ambiguity of the short story, the chosen research perspective includes a focus on the function of the protagonist as an entity that does not legitimise the socialist myth; a narratological approach on the use of proper names, on “perspective” and the role of the narrator with regard to the axiological structure of the text.

The paper offers a reading of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Sylwia Chutnik’s collection of short stories W krainie czarów [In wonderland], addressing the protagonists’ journey into self. Chutnik’s stories are interpreted in terms of some key motifs drawn from a reading of Carroll’s novel, which constitute the touch points of the two authorial designs: dream, imagination, metamorphosis, change, language, auto-thematicity, the demiurgic role of the narrator, and an open ending. Juxtaposed, these concepts shed light on the problem of travelling in time and space understood as a return to the world of childhood imagination. The analysis of Chutnik’s eleven short stories reveals a literary creation of signifying space, in particular the images of Warsaw and Silesia as sites appropriated by history as well as by the protagonists. In every case (be it cities, people’s experiences or post-traumatic stories), an attempted interpretation of particular places and times is shown as a process of discovering the mythology of space – a return to a personal Wonderland. The reflections are brought together by referring to the problem of “bad memory”, a literary means of presenting the reader with alternative testimonies of postmemory.

This study is designed to investigate the qualitative features of the stories produced by children, adults and older people with a special focus on sentence structures, the emergence of story units, Mean Length of Utterance (henceforward MLU) and evaluative language. Participants are 60 children from 3 to 5-year-olds, 60 adults from 20 to 30-year-olds and 60 older people who are 60 and over. Data were collected by using Mercer Meyer’s (1969) textless picture book, Frog, where are you?, which depicts the events that take place while a boy and a dog are in search of a missing frog in countryside. Results showed that there are significant differences in the qualitative features of the sentence structure produced by children and other two groups in the usage of connectives. Although adults and the older participants show similar features in the emergence and quality of story units as they are defined by Labov and Waletzky (1967), the narratives produced by children render significant differences both quantitatively and qualitatively. Regarding MLU, as they are in other narrative components, children are different from the other two groups. The mean length of sentences in adults’ stories is longer than in those of children and olds and the sentences produced by adults are more complex than those of both olds and children. All of the three groups use evaluative language in their narratives. However, the amount and quality of the evaluative language differs from the evaluative utterances adults and older participants produce.

The article investigates the specificity of narrative solutions in Labyrinths – the most surprising among Vaclau Lastousky’s works, which has no analogues in the Belarusian literature of that time. A number of significant examples are analyzed (the first encounter’s event, invisible publisher’s existence, the play by paratext etc.), which are the direct evidence of attempts of conscious “implementation” of internal dialogic possibilities of artistic expression as well as of author’s idea of polysubject narration creating. Among the author’s active use of polyphonic statement dialogized text constructions in a continuous discourse of an I-narrator are studied, as well as the change of observation focus on different narration sections and relatively developed characters nomination system. Thus, the “Labyrinths” should be attributed as the story, in which for the first time for Belarusian literature a completely new author’s strategy of a literary work composing is revealed.
Artykuł analizuje specyfikę rozwiązań narracyjnych w “Labiryntach” – najbardziej nieoczekiwanej opowieści w twórczości Wacława Łastowskiego, niemającej odpowiednika w ówczesnej literaturze białoruskiej. Analizie poddano szereg przykładów ilustracyjnych (wydarzenie pierwszego spotkania z bohaterem, istnienie niewidzialnego “wydawcy”, zabawa z paratekstem itp.), które bezpośrednio świadczą o próbie świadomego “wdrożenia” możliwości wewnętrznej dialogiczności słowa artystycznego i autorskiej inicjatywy stworzenia wielosubiektywnej narracji.

Opis:
In her fiction Olga Tokarczuk evokes a spectrum of belief systems rooted in diverse religious traditions and entrenched in their literary‑theological redoubts. This article is an attempt of presenting an overview of the belief systems and worldviews that can be found in all of Tokarczuk's novels. It also examines her view of religion, including her opinions and reactions that belong primarily to the narrower context of the Polish hic and nunc, and the religious entanglements of literature. The fact that Olga Tokarczuk, herself a graduate of psychology, has done of lot reading in neighbouring fields such as anthropology may explain her persistent preoccupation with the soul. It holds the key both to her religious imaginarium and to her fictions. The empathic soul represents the potential transgressiveness of existence. It is also, in her own words, "the most tender narrator", a story‑telling 'persona' endowed with the faculty of fostering engagement and a sense of responsibility for the state of the world. The article argues that Tokarczuk's aim is to conjure up and activate its 'persona', or soul, and while making it interact with the reader's soul, initiate a chain reaction that breaks barriers between human beings, and reaches out beyond the confines of the human world. That process begins with her playing around with multiple religious traditions to demonstrate that their borders and defences are anything but impregnable.

Opis:
The article examines an interpretation possibility to read the structure of the Book of Job as a drama structure. It shows that some of the apparent paradoxes and contradictions in the text can be understood as an inner logic of a drama. The seeming incoherence of narrative Prolog and Job's later statements can be easily reconciled by following through the dramatic cause-effect sequences and seeing the events as happening in permanently changing present. The dramatic approach enables to see the meeting between God and Satan as an unsuccessfully attempt to make a bet. Deprived from omniscient narrator’s perspective, the drama shows various attitudes, without pointing directly which is the best one. Full of paradoxes and contradictory statements, the main hero’s style can be compared with a modern stream of consciousness. The culminating point of the drama shows a durable change in Jobs posture and leads to surprising changes on a metalinguistic level.
