Opis:
Aim. Little research has focused on hypersensitive narcissism in Slavic countries. One of the reasons for that is the absence of suitable inventories. The present study aims to make the Ukrainian adapted translation of the Hypersensitive Narcissism Scale (HSNS) and to check for its psychometric properties in a non-clinical sample. Methods. To prepare materials, we first conducted a double-blind translation procedure with further linguistic analysis. The following two empirical studies to collect data for statistical analysis were then made. Results. The data shows adequate internal consistency and scale validity, as well as a three-factor structure (obtained with the principal components analysis [PCA]), in line with the theoretical background. However, the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and Cronbach’s alphas analysis yield the unidimensional scale to be the best fit for the Ukrainian version. The data also support evidence for maladaptive social relationship patterns of people with high HSNS scores. Conclusion. We proved vulnerable and grandiose narcissism are qualitatively different phenomena and showed how a cultural context of narcissism manifestation may be reflected through social interactions and self-attitude. HSNS in Ukrainian is a reliable and valid tool for complex psychological personality research among non-clinical adult samples. Practical application. The proposed translation of the HSNS is adapted to be used for research in Ukrainian culture, with Ukrainian-speaking respondents and psychologists’ and psychotherapists’ clients.

This paper describes the results of a study that examined if psychological entitlement and hedonic well-being mediated relationships between counterproductive work behaviors (CWB) and grandiose narcissism. More specifically, the mediation effects of both types of narcissism on CWB via psychological entitlement and hedonistic subjective well-being (SWB) were examined. This study is based on self-reported, cross-sectional study on 119 working adults. Agentic and communal narcissism were positively related to CWB in parallel way, while simultaneously and indirectly decreasing CWB levels via higher SWB. Current paper is the first attempt to include agentic-communal narcissism model to explain the levels of CWB. The theoretical and practical implications of presented findings are discussed here in terms of the agency-communion model of narcissism and the “mixed blessing” effects of grandiose narcissism on subjective well-being.

The following study focuses on individual differences between musicians who play solo (performing individually or as leaders), and musicians performing as part of a chamber ensemble, band, choir, orchestra, etc. We predicted that soloists would be higher on grandiose narcissism and self-efficacy. The results showed that soloists (n = 59) not only were higher on narcissism, but also had higher self-efficacy scores than musicians who perform in ensembles (n = 65). However, soloist and band players are not different in narcissism and self-efficacy when the other trait is controlled, which indicates that common features of both traits differentiate solo and band musicians. Results raise further questions on what factors affect the development of a musician’s career path.

The aim of the article is to show the way in which the technologically mediated culture of consumption determines what we call lifestyle in the perspective of the critical cultural studies paradigm. Contemporary consumption, based as it is on the counter-cultural ideas which appeal to difference, creativity and lifestyle, solves the central problem of consumerism – supplying a constant stream of novelty in a situation where things are losing just this quality. Lifestyle has become a life strategy, the framework for interpreting consumer choice suggests that freely made decisions concerning symbolic and aesthetic pleasures provide a sense of fulfilment in a successful and varied lifestyle. Culture is increasingly perceived through the prism of who we should be, and what we should have, in order to achieve by means of these an illusory goal, namely that of identity.

Physical activity is considered a healthy behavior as lifestyle component that can prevent chronic disease and attributed to numerous psychological and physical benefits. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of exercise dependence and narcissism components on eating disorders in male bodybuilders. The study was a correlational study and the statistical population consisted of male bodybuilders in city clubs with more than one year of continuous training of at least three sessions a week. 250 male bodybuilders were selected by cluster sampling. The research tool consisted of three questionnaires: narcissistic personality, exercise dependency and eating disorders. For data analysis correlation and regression tests were performed by SPSS version 21 and p-value less than 0.05 was considered as significant. The results showed that addiction to exercise and narcissism and their components had a significant positive relationship with eating disorders (all P-values < 0.01). Regression models revealed that exercise dependence and narcissism were able to predict 46% of variance in eating disorder (p < 0.01). According to the data, nutritional behaviors can be promoted by improving narcissistic tendencies and dependency on exercise

In-group identification is necessary for in-group members to take responsibility for the past transgressions of the in-group. However, even among high identifiers, the reactions to reminders of the in-group’s transgression may differ depending on the beliefs members hold about their in-group. Results of a cross-sectional study (N = 441), indicate that collective narcissism (i.e., a belief that the in-group’s importance is not sufficiently recognized by others) versus in-group satisfaction (i.e., a belief that the in-group is of high value and a reason to be proud of) have opposite unique associations with the evaluation of the artistic value of films referring to Polish involvement in pogroms during the Second World War (Ida and The Aftermath, a proxy of an attitude towards knowledge about past national transgressions). Collective narcissism predicted lower, whereas in-group satisfaction predicted higher, perceived artistic value of the films. Those unique relationships could only be observed when the positive association between collective narcissism and in-group satisfaction was partialled out.

The study research phenomenon of trophies in digital games. It starts from the analysis of the trophy hunter and trophy community constructs. The phenomenon of collecting trophies in digital games and its impact on gamers, but also on the gaming experience, is researched. The trophy concept is a paradox because it simultaneously creates gamers who choose games according to the difficulty of the trophy, and play games they do not like because of the easiness of the trophy. The aim of the paper is to investigate, present and analyse the phenomenon of trophies in digital games from cultural, anthropological, and marketing aspects. Collecting trophies was observed in the context of the phenomenon of narcissistic culture according to Lasch’s theory. Also, the study draws a parallel between the phenomenon of trophies as a reward for gamers, but also the development of niche marketing. Trophy hunters represent a more detailed segmentation of consumers who we understand as brand ambassadors for digital games. Also, trophy hunters encourage each other to collect trophies and thus shape gamers. To obtain a precise insight into the phenomenon of trophies and trophy subculture, the method of virtual ethnography was used.

Opis:
In the present paper we consider the specific relationship between communal and agentic functioning of narcissistic individuals. The study was aimed to test whether narcissist’s aggression is due to not only negative information about their agency but also positive information about their communion. Whereas the first effect is well- documented in empirical studies, the second effect has been revealed in our prior research. The results of the present study confirmed both effects: negative information about one’s agency increased aggressive tendencies (operationalized as a display of demeaning behavior) and decreased state self-esteem, while positive information about one’s communion resulted only in displaced aggression. The aggressive response to positive communal information is discussed as the success-as-aflaw effect, which we mean as inverse of the failure-as-an asset effect. According to the success-as-a-flaw effect, positive outcomes in the communal domain, considered by narcissists to be an evidence of low-status, are threatening for the grandiose self, based on the domain of agency. The social cognitive and clinical approach is employed to interpret these results.

This essay explores Jacques Lacan’s theory of desire as functioning according to the logic of tragedy and compares it with Alenka Zupančič’s concept of love as comedy, demonstrating however that the latter remains too caught up in the Lacanian worldview to truly capture the active side of love. The essay argues that Zupančič’s interpretation of Lacan can be reinterpreted again through the lenses of “messianic psychoanalysis” – psychoanalysis “slightly adjusted” – standing not on the side of the tragic acceptance of fate, but of the promise of “more life.” Drawing from the reflections of Agata Bielik-Robson, Eric Santner and Jonathan Lear, this essay intends to demonstrate that Zupančič’s comedy of love can be reconciled with the more relational notion of love as a psychoanalytical counterpart of messianic Exodus. An example of such a liberating combination of eros and wit can be found in Freud’s interpretation of Wilhelm Jensen’s Gradiva.

Due to the development of social media, posting one's photos is becoming increasingly popular; they often take the form of, so called, ‘selfie’. The phenomenon of photographing oneself has also occurred in cultural institutions, including museums. The museums are implementing various strategies of reacting to people taking pictures of themselves with exhibits at the background. The article presents an analysis of these reactions, and, based on that, various ways of defining the functions and role of the contemporary museum. The author also attempts to provide an answer to the following question: is posting photographs by visitors an element of creating their own image (‘the Culture of Narcissism’), or is it rather a form of interaction with heritage, of a dialogue with the presented contents (‘remix culture’)?

The article attempts to describe adonization, a specific tactic for exerting influence which employs physical attraction, as well as its determinants. The article presents a proprietary model of determinants and motivational mechanisms which constitute the basis of the attitude toward adonization. A cycle of 3 studies on individual determinants for the attitude toward adonization was described. Results of study 1 (50 women and 50 men) confirmed that male gender, psychological masculinity, narcissism, Machiavellianism and high self-monitoring were correlates of a positive attitude toward adonization. Study 2 (36 women and 36 men) showed that extraversion was the predictor of a positive attitude toward adonization of men and women and that agreeableness was the predictor of a less positive attitude of women. In Study 3 (91 women and 88 men aged 18–63) it was established that there were no differences in the attitude toward adonization in young and middle-aged men. Comparison among young and middle-aged women proved that younger women had a more positive attitude toward adonization in the cognitive and in the affective components than older women.

Modern dating life has been changed with the advent of smartphone-based applications like Tinder. One way to identify who uses these applications is to compare the personality traits of users to non-users. In two brief studies (N = 581) we compared Tinder-users to non-users in individual differences associated with short-term mating (i.e., psychopathy, Machiavellianism, narcissism [the Dark Triad traits], and anxious attachment) and mate value. We revealed that the men who were Tinder users were especially high in psychopathy and narcissism and women who were Tinder users were especially high in anxious attachment and rated themselves as unsuccessful in finding relationship partners. While exploratory in nature, we suggest that men who are characterized by antisocial traits may use Tinder for opportunistic mating goals whereas women who have struggled to find relationships may use Tinder as a compensatory mating tactic.

Alan Hollinghurst’s 1994 novel The Folding Star tells the story of a gay man who develops an obsessive fascination with his seventeen-year-old student. The first-person narrative focuses on the protagonist’s emotional suffering: he gradually succumbs to masochistic and sadistic impulses and nurtures a melancholic condition which eventually leads to his failure and the permanent loss of his object of desire. The aim of this article is to read Hollinghurst’s novel as a study of an emotional disorder, using the conceptual tools provided by psychoanalysis, a method born at the turn of the 19th and 20th century. The Folding Star recreates a Fin de siècle aura, and exploits the then established links between homosexuality, psychopathology, oversensitivity and aestheticism. With this novel, Hollinghurst investigates and mocks conventions and stereotypes related both to modernism and to homosexuality.

The results indicated that narcissism predicted less willingness to share resources with others and more competitive orientation in a façade communal condition compared to the remaining two conditions: control and agentic. The results confirm narcissistic disregard for communal domain and are consistent with the extended agency model of narcissism and the “success as a drawback” effect.

Opis:
One of the most important values that the non-public sector brought into the educational system in Poland in the year 1989 was the breaking of the state monopoly in education. It brought the hope that school institutions would be able to open up new learning spaces for democracy, including agreement, the autonomy of teachers, the involvement of parents, and student self-government that in turn would have led to deep school socialization. Cooperation with the local communities became obligatory for schools after the introduction of the school reform in 1999. Civic education was expected to bring benefits for both the schools and society through creating the conditions for informal learning, democracy in practice and citizenship within and beyond the schools. The aim of this research was to recognize the main areas/fields that constitute the non-public schools in a Polish city today. The paper presents a qualitative pilot research project conducted in the years 2014-2017 in three selected non-public primary schools led by NGOs in a city of 600,000 inhabitants in Poland. The data reveals the syndrome of “cultural narcissism” that has probably become a feature of some urban non-public schools.
Jedną z najważniejszych wartości, jakie sektor niepubliczny wprowadził do systemu oświaty w Polsce w 1989 r., było przełamanie monopolu państwowego w edukacji.
