Opis:
The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has shown that the demand for medical masks and respirators exceeds the current global stockpile of these items, and there is a dire need to increase the production capacity. Considering that ionizing radiation has been used for sterilization of medical products for many years and electron beam (EB) irradiation enables the treatment of huge quantities of disposable medical products in a short time this method should be tested for the mask’s decontamination. In this work, three different filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs) were irradiated with electron beams of 12 kGy and 25 kGy. The results confirmed that the decrease in filtration efficiency after irradiation of all respirators results from the elimination of the electric charge from the polypropylene (PP) fibers in the irradiation process. Moreover, the applied doses may affect the thermal stability of PP fabrics, while filtering materials structure and integrity have not changed after irradiation.

Opis:
A filter system is presented which allows the reduction of the concentration of ultrafine particles in vehicle cabins to very low levels. The original ventilation system is switched to the recirculation mode and all cabin intake air is supplied via a retrofitted filter system. Tests with a variety of different vehicles (from passenger cars to coaches) show the efficiency of the system. Filters incorporated in present ventilation systems remove large particles, for example pollen, but usually are inefficient for removing very small particles. This is demonstrated by Fig. l, where the particle number concentration outside and inside a car is plotted during a journey near Zurich. It is obvious that the concentrations inside and outside are more or less identical. All windows were closed during this measurement. Tests with a number ofdifferent all cars showed similar results. The filters included in today 's ventilation systems usually cannot remove nanoparticles, and so vehicle cabin indoor and outdoor nanoparticle concentrations are more or less identical. The nanocleaner, consisting of a very effident filter and a high performance blower, allows reduction of the particle concentration in the cabin from several hundreds of thousands or millions per cc. to a few thousand per cc., equivalent to remote woodland, the total exposed dose being reduced by some two orders of magnitude.

Opis:
Separation of particles from gas stream is of great importance in many areas of human life. Air filtering materials have wide applications. They are used inter alia in ventilation and air conditioning systems, in cars to reduce emission from diesel engines, in the device of everyday use (e.g. vacuum cleaner), as a personal protective equipment for example to avoid inhalation hazardous dust from industrial processes. Small airborne particles can cause a variety problems for human health. Long exposure to particles of submicron- and nano-sized has been related to higher death rates due to lung cancer and cardiopulmonary illness. The main object of this study was to investigate filtration efficiency of oil nanodroplets (DEHS di-ethylhexyl sebacate) and salt nanoparticles (KCl) from air using fibrous polypropylene media made by melt-blown technique. Fibrous filters are relatively inexpensive to fabricate and what is the most important they are high efficient with simultaneous low flow resistance. Three types of non-wovens having various morphology with different average fiber diameter were tested. The tests show that both KCl solid nanoparticles and DEHS nano oil-mist can be efficiently separate from the air using melt-blown fibrous materials. Moreover these filters have been also electrically charged by corona discharge. The filtration efficiency of charged filters (electrets) was compared with efficiency of uncharged (mechanicals) samples. Results showed significant increase in filtration efficiency for the filters with electric charge compared with uncharged ones.

Opis:
Acid leaching of Egyptian zinc ore from the Um Gheig area was carried out with sulfuric acid. This study determines the optimum conditions for dissolution of non-sulfide zinc ore. The optimum conditions are 25% -74m particle size, 45 °C temperature, 2 h leaching time, 1.1 stoichiometric molar ratio of H2SO4 to Zn, 1:3 solid/liquid ratio. The maximum filtration rate is 1.6 Mg Zn•m-2•day-1at pressure difference of 0.80 bar. The zinc recovery is about 90%. As the zinc ore contains zinc silicate, some additives were tested to enhance filtration and prevent formation of silica gel. To increase the added value of the product, zinc oxide was precipitated by a co-precipitation method in a nanosize powder with average particle size ~ 20 nm. Photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue dye under UV light using ZnO nanopowders produced at different conditions was investigated. Photocatalytic efficiency with methylene blue (MB) concentration was reduced as much as 85% in 240 min with the produced nanoparticles.

Opis:
Epidemiological studies of the effect of harmful nanoparticles on the human body prove that efficient protective measures need to be developed. This applies, in particular, to respiratory protection equipment in which filtration nonwovens are the essential structural material. This paper discusses a method for improving the efficiency of electret filtration nonwovens for nanoparticles by using polypropylene (PP) admixed with additives with varying electrostatic potentials. The investigation was carried out using amber (negative charge) and perlite beads (positive charge) incorporated into the polymer stream using melt-blown technology. Filtration efficiency was evaluated using standard methods with paraffin oil mist and sodium chloride aerosol and non-standard methods with nanoparticles. The studies proved that strengthened electrostatic interaction effects owing to the modifiers provide a promising method for improving the efficiency of electret nonwovens against nanoparticles.
Badania epidemiologiczne dotyczące wpływu oddziaływania szkodliwych nanocząstek na organizm człowieka wskazują na konieczność opracowania skutecznych środków ochronnych. W szczególności dotyczy to sprzętu ochrony układu oddechowego, którego podstawowym materiałem konstrukcyjnym są włókniny filtracyjne. W artykule zaprezentowano sposób poprawy skuteczności elektretowych włóknin filtracyjnych wobec nanocząstek poprzez domieszkowanie polipropylenu (PP) dodatkami o różnym potencjale elektrostatycznym. Badania prowadzono z wykorzystaniem granul perlitu (ładunek dodatni) oraz bursztynu (ładunek ujemny) wprowadzanych do strugi polimeru w technologii meltblown. Skuteczność filtracji oceniono metodami standardowymi z wykorzystaniem aerozolu mgły oleju parafinowego i chlorku sodu oraz niestandardowymi z użyciem nanocząstek. Badania wykazały, że obiecującym kierunkiem poprawy skuteczności elektretowych włóknin wobec nanocząstek jest wzmocnienie efektu oddziaływań sił elektrostatycznych poprzez wprowadzenie modyfikatorów.
