Opis:
Aim. The aim of this work is to present a qualitative analysis of the creative educational materials prepared by preservice teachers in the context of an educational experience around a museum exhibition about Science and Literature, described in a previous work (Authors, 2020). The responses to a final questionnaire about interdisciplinarity, integration of Sciences and Arts or the use of museums for children’s education are also analysed. Methods. The participants were 121 alumni of two different subjects “Natural Sciences for teachers” and “Literary training for teachers” at a Spanish university. Preservice teachers had to select an item of the museum exhibition and, as a group, prepare a catalogue intended for children, where they had to write a short text related to the object and activities for children in an exercise of didactic transposition. The students generated teaching materials with a high component of creativity and a multimodal approach, with a mixture of linguistic and non-linguistic codes. The qualitative analysis of these creative teaching materials was carried out with Atlas.ti v8. To assess the experience a questionnaire about different aspects of the proposal was completed by the students at the end of the semester. Results and conclusion. The analysis of the teaching materials demonstrates differences between the alumni attending both subjects in the type of items selected, the literary genre of the short text and the prepared activities. The responses to the final questionnaire give us an insight on the reasons for the item selection and show how most of the students considered the experience as very interesting and formative. We can conclude that the educational experience here described served as an exercise to internalise the benefits of this method and, at the same time, adapt it for their future students in Primary Education.

In 2012, a new department of the Archaeological Museum in Poznań – the Genius Loci Archaeological Reserve – was established on Ostrów Tumski (Cathedral Island) in Poznań. The island is a unique historical space, where archaeological excavations have been underway since 1938. It is thanks to them that the scope of knowledge about the beginnings of both the Polish state and the city of Poznań has improved significantly, and the results of these works have altered historians’ knowledge. The reserve has been designed so that visitors can learn about the earliest history from the point of view of science, and accompany archaeologists and representatives of other modern disciplines in discovering the secrets of long forgotten areas of history. The structures of the perfectly preserved rampart of the Poznań stronghold and the soil profiles have been made accessible to visitors in the form of an archaeological excavation site. ith the use of multimedia, discreetly placed throughout the exhibition, the entire spectrum of information about the Piast settlement from the 10th/11th century is presented, as is the rich collection of archaeological relics collected during many years of excavations. The article outlines the reserve’s activities to date and discusses the problem of reaching out to adults who seek a deeper and organised contact with culture.

Opis:
Organisation of exhibitions from the point of view of copyright (Act on Copyright and Related Rights of 4 Feb. 1994, further copyright) is a multifaceted issue. The analysis conducted in the paper boils down to some selected aspects: beginning with the right to display, through exhibition as a separate copyrighted work, up to the exhibition author, namely curator. When purchasing items for collections or acquiring them on the ground of a loan contract, museums should make sure the work can be exploited through public display. Such agreement can be either expressed in the contract (rights or licence transfer) or can be implicit (it can be then assumed that non-exclusive licence with all its limitations has been transferred). Furthermore, the construction of fair use from Art. 32.1 of Act on Copyright can be applicable. An issue apart is the question of exhibition as a separate copyrighted work. It can be a co-authored work in the case when it combines creative efforts of e.g. curator and author of the exhibition layout. The article analyses exhibition understood as a collection of exhibits selected and arranged following a script or presented following a layout in order to fulfil the assumptions of a derivative work (Art. 2 Act on Copyright) or a collection (Art. 3 Act on Copyright). As a result of the assumption that exhibition is a work, the curator becomes an author, thus will have copyright to the created work. Depending on the formal curator-museum relationship, the author’s economic rights shall either be transferred to the museum (employee’s work, specific-task contract with rights transfer or licence granting), or shall exceptionally remain with the author.
Organizacja wystaw z punktu widzenia prawa autorskiego (Ustawa z dnia 4 lutego 1994 r. o prawie autorskim i prawach pokrewnych, dalej pr.aut.) jest zagadnieniem wieloaspektowym.

Opis:
The site currently occupied by the Archaeological Museum in Kraków abounds with finds dating back to the early medieval period. It is located on the edge of the alluvial cone of the Prądnik, a tributary to the Vistula River. In the 9th-13th century, the area was contained within the fortified suburbium where a dwelling, productive and commercial settlement developed. After 1612, the land was donated to the Discalced Carmelite Order, and the monastery with the church of St. Michael and St. Joseph were built. In the year 1797, on the strength of the decree issued by the Austrian Emperor Joseph II (from 1782), concerning the dissolution of monastic orders, the Carmelite Order was dissolved, and the church with the monastery were confiscated by the State Treasury to be used as prison and jail cells. In 1954, Kraków authorities donated the complex to serve the needs of the Archaeological Museum in Kraków. The history of the buildings became the topic of subsequent exhibitions.

Following a long disease, on 12 December 2022, Zbigniew Wawer passed away: a historian, boasting a postdoctoral degree, an associate professor, author of numerous publications, and a film producer. In 2012–2017, he ran the Polish Army Museum in Warsaw, as of 2017 having become Director of the Royal Łazienki Museum. The period of his career connected with museology was marked by the process of establishing contacts with international partners focused mainly on presenting research results. It was also characterized by a high dynamics of displays meant to expose some unique artefacts, particularly Polonica, and of publishing projects. He considered these two aspects the most important in fulfilling the museum’s mission. Prof. Wawer also paid similar attention to collection extension, having demonstrated high efficiency in fundraising for the purpose. Furthermore, he strongly opted for the upgrading of his staff’s qualifications, while also seeing the necessity to verify museum-related competences. Many museum curators followed his encouragement to study. The paper presents the profile of a widely known individual in more detail; he was a researcher focused on revealing the historical truth and a museum curator frequently appreciated for his activity.

The article analyzes museum representations of communism in Poland from the perspective of exhibition strategies influencing the public understanding of the past. Over the past forty years, Western museums have increasingly moved away from the affirmative model of presenting the past, dominating since the nineteenth century, towards critical paradigms and even those pro-moting social activism. The analysis of Polish exhibitions devoted to recent history carried out from this perspective allows us to reveal the functions fulfilled by museum institutions in the Polish social and political reality.

The author discusses the problem of truth in museum exhibitions invoking the tragedy of World War II. In this respect, he is very appreciative of the value of Majdanek, Auschwitz-Birkenau, Stutthof and the other museums set up within the compounds of former Nazi German camps. Based on his own research from 2016–2019, he finds that shaping the relations between the truth of the place and the truth of the exhibition, skillfully using authenticity, and finding new forms of “speaking” to visitors are enormous challenges facing exhibitors.

Opis:
The paper presents the research project implemented by the staff of the University of Silesia in Katowice during the Museum Power Exhibition at the National Museum in Krakow. The semiotic interpretation of the data amassed in FGIs and IGIs, these enriched with class observations, Desk Research, as well as the analysis of purpose-created documents, allowed to fulfil the goal of the investigation. The interdepartmental cooperation launched when educators became Exhibition’s curators was of the main interest to the researchers. These actions were considered as examples of the implementation of the ‘educational turn’ in Polish museology where tendencies to clearly separate and differently evaluate curatorial and educational practices are distinctly visible. The analysis of the manners of extending fields of museum education by educators-curators enabled the identification of a set of recommendations for initiating display projects implemented and co-created by the education department staff. In the presentation of the research results the focus has been put on three areas in which the shift was observed: types of knowledge organizing thinking about the display; perception and application of educators’ competences; and shaping informal relations and producing institutional trust. The paper speaks in favour of the necessity to take into account the experience and competences of the education department employees when creating valuable exhibitions and consolidating good relations with committed public.

Opis:
Museums are progressively using ICT to reinforce cultural and heritage tourism. Museums are vital in transmitting cultural values, propagating traditions, and linking current generations to their heritage. ICT has recently gained prominence for its ability to stimulate creative approaches. The use of ICT in museum operations is widespread, particularly in the areas of presentation and preservation. Museums, according to previous research, use a range of ICT tools to enhance the visitor experience (VX) through modernizing their exhibits and object interpretation. The purpose of this paper is to gain a better understanding of the VX as well as to evaluate the visitors' standpoint on ICT in museums. The research was applied to the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization. Two primary approaches were used, which include qualitative data such as literature reviews and interviews, as well as quantitative data as the main ways that employ questionnaires. Findings indicate that integrating technological tools can enrich the VX in museums by allowing for the usage of a variety of digital media types.

Opis:
The objective of the research was a survey identification of the presence of the history of Communist Poland, PRL, in museum narrative in 1989–2017. Importantly, this is a repeated, supplemented, and more thorough research versus the one presented in the paper ‘PRL in Museum Narrative over the Last 25 Years’ published in 2014 in the Światowid. Rocznik Muzeum PRL-u (w organizacji) periodical. The research discussed in the present paper forms part of a doctoral dissertation, constituting the research’s second stage. As a result of the conducted research based on survey answers provided by museums and on individual research a database containing 642 exhibitions was created. When processing the data, quantitative analysis was adopted. After data cleaning the following statistical trends were analysed: exhibition duration over the whole research period, percentage of leading themes, percentage of themes in respective cities. The conducted analysis has permitted to observe trends in museum narrative concerning PRL. Also the most popular exhibition duration over the research period has been identified (up to two years and permanent exhibitions). The most popular categories have been named: art history, political history, history of everyday life. Three groups of urban centres where museum narrative is present to a varied degree have been named. The fourth group contains cities in whose museums the topic of PRL has not been tackled over the last 28 years, or such projects cannot be reliably confirmed.

It is the assumptions, goals, and effects of the new permanent display mounted at the Museum of King John III’s Palace at Wilanów titled Art Collecting in the Potocki Family that are the topic of the present paper. The Exhibition presents a less known fragment of the Wilanów Palace’s history when it was owned by the Potockis: Aleksandra née Lubomirski and Stanisław Kostka, their son Aleksander, and grandson August and his spouse Aleksandra née Potocki. The three generations of the Pilawa-coat-of-arms family wrote a new, albeit extremely important chapter in the history of the former royal and magnate residence, placing in it the Museum of Art and the Memorial Site of the history of the Polish nation for almost a hundred years The Potockis amassed artistic collections and national mementoes, and introduced changes to the layout of the private spaces of the residence in order to adjust them to serving museum purposes. In harmony with the Potockis’ idea, the systematically growing collection turned into a treasure opened to the general public. It is the first entry in the Wilanów Guest Book: 5 August 1805 that is regarded to have been the launch of the Museum’s public operation. In its narrative and layout the new display refers to the Potockis’ Museum. The interiors of the garden gallery on the Palace’s first floor have been transformed according to ico -nographic records from the 19th and early 20th century. In the southern gallery we remind of the Library once functioning here, in the northern one, in turn, we recall Warsaw’s important cultural event from 1856: Exhibition of Antiquities. As a result of the introduced changes new display spaces have been created: the Historical Cabinet, Print Cabinet, and the Iconographic Cabinet. The first is dedicated to national mementoes, whereas the latter two are cosy display rooms of objects on paper.

Opis:
The monumental publication Avant-garde Museum (ed. Agnieszka Pindera, Jarosław Suchan, Muzeum Sztuki w Łodzi, Łódź 2020) juxtaposes and analyses four museum projects: Museums of Artistic Culture in Soviet Russia, the activity of the Société Anonyme in the USA, Poland’s ‘a.r.’ Group, and the Kabinett der Abstrakten, the selection criterion being that each was conceived by Avantgarde artists; additionally, in the projects’ assumptions the artists were to run the implementation of the projects. The publication has been divided into three sections: research papers, source texts, and the catalogue of documents and works. The study of the Avant-garde museum projects spans over four areas: the concept, collection, organization, and display. However, these issues are not isolated in the research, but more purposefully integrated. The main goal of the study is to show how the Avant-garde institutionalized itself. This very thesis is reflected upon in the present paper. Just like the consequences of this publication: e.g., entering the Avant-garde into the canon of art history and sanctifying its output as an unquestionable value.
Monumentalna publikacja Awangardowe muzeum (red. Agnieszka Pindera, Jarosław Suchan, Muzeum Sztuki w Łodzi, Łódź 2020) zestawia i analizuje cztery projekty muzealnicze: Muzea Kultury Artystycznej w Rosji Radzieckiej, działalność Société Anonyme w Stanach Zjednoczonych i grupy „a.r.” w Polsce oraz Kabinett der Abstrakten w Hanowerze.

Opis:
The process of an exhibition being created in a space difficult to arrange, i.e. within the former Pszczyna Castle Stable, is discussed. In its concept, the display bonded the collection of the Castle Museum in Pszczyna in a dialogue with the study collection of the Fashion Museum. The Author analyses the manner in which the use of Erwin Panofsky’s iconology allowed to create a cohesive narrative composed of 25 minor stories of clothing, fashion, their mutual relation, and reference to the surrounding objects. This, in turn, leads to the deliberation on clothing itself and its aspects that can be investigated through different research means, in some cases concentrating on its material properties, in others, on the cultural ones. Therefore, the conclusions reached are of a general character, allowing to be used in a preparation of similar exhibitions also in other spaces.
Artykuł przedstawia proces powstawania wystawy w trudnej do aranżacji przestrzeni Stajni Książęcych w Pszczynie. Ekspozycja w swoim zamierzeniu łączyła w dialogu kolekcję Muzeum Zamkowego w Pszczynie ze studyjną kolekcją ubiorów Muzealne Mody. Autor analizuje, w jaki sposób wykorzystanie ikonologii Erwina Panofsky’ego pozwoliło stworzyć spójną narrację złożoną z 25 mniejszych opowieści o ubiorze, modzie, ich wzajemnych relacjach i odniesieniach do otaczających je przedmiotów.
