    Opis:
    Artefacts made of and from untypical materials with the use of sophisticated techniques preserved in museums constitute an exceptional challenge to museum curators. Such is the case of two letters described in the paper, written on birch bark by someone signed as the female: Janka and Jaśka dispatched to her mother from the Soviet Polovinka Gulag in the Urals in 1946 and 1947. Currently, the artefacts are in the collection of the Museum of Rev. Józef Jarzębowski in Licheń Stary, while their history was explained only in the 2010s. In 2022, the letters underwent museum conservation, which allowed to find out what material they were written on and what technique was used for the execution, following which they were appropriately preserved so that they can last the longest possible minimizing their deterioration.

    Opis:
    Museum is collections. Their safe and appropriate storage has always been and will remain the basic statutory activity of every museum. As can be found in both domestic and international sources, merely a fraction of museums’ collections is on permanent display, while their remaining part is kept in museums’ storerooms. Therefore, the priority goal of every museum, of its management, and organizer, should be the availability of an adequate storage area. Regrettably, history and praxis demonstrate that it is precisely within this field that museums have always had and continue having the greatest needs. Worldwide museology faces the ongoing challenge of museum collection storage, and this is the challenge that Polish museums face as well. Fortunately, for over two decades a process of actual transformation in this respect has been occurring, the latter resulting in modern storage facilities being built. These, complying with the latest standards, shall guarantee high-quality protection to the collections, as well as a low-budget construction, and low energy consumption in the course of operations. Poland, too, has been participating in these changes. Recently, the topic of museum storage areas has entered the list of priority tasks of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, which in 2016 commissioned the National Institute for Museums and Public Collections (NIMOZ) to provide appropriate reports, analyses, and concepts, while in 2018 it formally assigned the Construction of the Central Storage Facility for Museum Collections Project (CMZM) to NIMOZ. A new position of the Director’s Proxy for the Central Storage Facility for Museum Collections has been created. This means that a major development in the history of Polish museology has taken place: at the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and its subordinate cultural institution definite steps have formally been taken in order to resolve the problems of museum collection storage in Poland. The assumption has been made that CMZM will be a pilot and model solution that can be followed by subsequent storage facilities for museums in Poland’s other regions.
    Muzeum to zbiory. Bezpieczne i odpowiednie ich przechowywanie zawsze było, jest i będzie podstawowym, statutowym działaniem każdego muzeum. Jak wynika z krajowych i międzynarodowych źródeł, w muzeach eksponuje się na stałe jedynie niewielki procent ich zbiorów, a pozostałą ogromną większość przechowuje się w magazynach. W związku z tym właśnie posiadanie odpowiedniej powierzchni magazynowej powinno być zawsze pierwszoplanowym celem każdego muzeum, jego zarządu i organizatora. Niestety, historia i praktyka pokazują, że właśnie w tym obszarze muzea zawsze miały i nadal mają największe potrzeby. Światowe muzealnictwo zmaga się z ciągle aktualnym problemem w obszarze magazynowania muzealnych zbiorów, który w znacznym stopniu dotyczy również polskich muzeów. Szczęśliwie, od przeszło dwóch dekad trwa proces rzeczywistych zmian w tym obszarze. Ich efektem są nowo budowane, nowoczesne magazyny, które zgodnie ze współczesnymi standardami, zapewniają wysoki poziom ochrony zbiorów, przy jednoczesnym zastosowaniu ekonomicznych kosztów budowy oraz niskiego zużycia energii podczas eksploatacji. Również Polska uczestniczy w tych zmianach. W ostatnich latach temat muzealnych magazynów znalazł się na liście ważnych zadań Ministerstwa Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego, które w 2016 r. zleciło NIMOZowi opracowanie odpowiednich raportów, analiz i koncepcji, a w 2018 r. formalnie powierzyło zadanie inwestycyjne pn. Budowa Centralnego Magazynu Zbiorów Muzealnych (CMZM). W strukturze organizacyjnej NIMOZ-u umieszczono nowe stanowisko Pełnomocnika Dyrektora ds. Centralnego Magazynu Zbiorów Muzealnych. Tym samym nastąpił niezwykle ważny moment w historii polskiego muzealnictwa – w MKiDN i podległej mu instytucji kultury oficjalnie podjęto konkretne czynności zmierzające do rozwiązania problemów magazynowania muzealnych zbiorów w Polsce. Zakłada się, że CMZM stanie się pilotażowym i modelowym rozwiązaniem, na którego przykładzie można będzie tworzyć kolejne magazyny dla muzeów w innych regionach Polski.

    Opis:
    The paper contains analysis of the legal relationships that constitute the basis of museum objects’ conservation. In the introductory part a brief presentation of the essence of conservation as a process always aimed at the object’s good is contained. It is reminded that views on a creative effect of conservation projects have already been well rooted in the doctrine. The basic topic of considerations is the legal analysis of an Employment Contract and Civil Law Contract to conduct conservation. It is the two, analysed in the perspective of museum objects’ conservation, that are of major importance for museum practice. Furthermore, employee’s piece of work resulting from museum objects’ conservation is analysed as a creative activity of individual nature. The specificity of a Contract to Conduct Conservation is presented, which has been qualified as a mixed contract, combining elements of a Specific-Task Contract and Deposit Contract.
    W niniejszym artykule zawarte zostały rozważania na temat stosunków prawnych stanowiących podstawę konserwacji muzealiów. W części wprowadzającej zamieszczono krótkie omówienie istoty konserwacji jako procesu nakierowanego zawsze na dobro obiektu. Przypomniano również, ugruntowane już w doktrynie, poglądy na temat twórczych efektów działalności konserwatorskiej. Zasadniczym przedmiotem rozważań stała się natomiast prawna analiza umowy o pracę oraz umowy cywilnoprawnej o wykonanie konserwacji. Te dwie umowy – rozpatrywane z perspektywy konserwacji muzealiów – posiadają bowiem istotne znaczenie dla praktyki muzealnej. Przybliżono zagadnienie utworów pracowniczych, będących efektem konserwacji muzealiów, jako działalności twórczej o indywidualnym charakterze. Zaprezentowano specyfikę umowy o wykonanie konserwacji, którą zakwalifikowano jako umowę mieszaną, łączącą w sobie elementy umowy o dzieło oraz umowy przechowania.

    The paper describes the activities, structures and tasks of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, one of the most important remembrance institutions and the most important Holocaust Memorial in Poland. The short outline of the camp’s wartime history is followed by sections concerning the post-war site’s use and commemoration, the forming of the Museum, concepts of its shape, and contemporary challenges to its activities. The selected Museum’s structures were discussed: the archives, exhibitions, research, collections, conservation and visitor services departments.

    Opis:
    The Zofia and Jan Włodek Foundation in Cracow takes care e.g., of the photographic legacy of its patron Prof. Jan Zdzisław Włodek. Its most valuable element is a collections of 240 coloured positives on Autochrome plates manufactured by Lumière and Agfa- -Farbenplatten; it is one of the largest sets of photographs of this type taken by a single author which has been preserved in Poland. In 2020–2021, thanks to the financing from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the collection underwent conservation and was digitized, following which it was made available to broad groups of viewers on the www.szukajwarchiwach.pl and www. zbioryspoleczne.pl portals. The unique photo technology used for their production constituted a real challenge in the set’s conservation and digitizing; moreover, attempts were made at an experimental digitizing of the selected autochromes with the use of directed bright-field. In order to promote the knowledge of the set, its author, and the works he conducted, videos and exhibitions were prepared, The whole project was quite challenging to a relatively small NGO. The key to its success was the cooperation of experts who proved to be flexible and creative in their approach to this particular task and peculiar conditions in which the project was implemented.
