Opis:
The hydroacoustic signatures of ship propellers can be identified experimentally through measurements of cavitation-induced pressure fluctuations and the accompanying noise distribution at model scale. These measurements have to be performed in a cavitation tunnel at the propellers operating conditions and with sufficient accuracy. In comparison, the numerical approach can be used to present a good general idea of the predicted results. Numerical methods can provide highly accurate tools for noise level and propagation prediction, as well as giving insight into the flow field and other key aspects. They are also not influenced by signal conditioning or disturbance sources present in a physical environment. So we trade scope and precision of the results for time and cost reduction. In this paper, we described both experimental and numerical methods currently in use and present advantages and limitations of the practical application of both.

Opis:
According to an official study conducted by the IMO Correspondence Group on Casualty Analysis concerning the fire incidents that occurred on the vehicle-decks of RoPax ships, covering the period from 1994 to 2011, it has been shown that a very serious incident has occurred every other year since 2002, resulting in six constructive total losses. The results of this review shed the light on the need to investigate the application of fire models to simulate fire scenarios that may occur on the vehicle-decks aboard RoPax ships. This will be very useful for the RoPax designers who are willing to introduce new technologies or deviate from the current prescriptive regulations of fire safety design in order to reduce the risk of such catastrophic accidents. The aim of this paper is to present the results of a comparison between the predictions of three different fire models and the experimental results of a model-scale fire test that represents a fire scenario on a vehicle-deck aboard a RoPax ship. A statistical analysis technique was used to illustrate the ability of each fire model to predict five outputs of concern. The main conclusion of this comparison is that there is always an optimal fire model that can predict one or more of the five outputs of concern with results in good agreement with the measured values.

Opis:
Brake is one of the most important safety feature in every mechanical vehicle from bikes to airplanes. Brakes have to be designed in order to meet safety, reliability, efficiency and economical requirements. One has to remember that not only design of brake is important but also friction material used in its construction. Without proper materials, brakes are not able to generate proper braking moment. Braking moment is the most important parameter of brake from operation point of view. It is directly connected to braking distance as well with amount of force needed to achieve assumed braking parameters for the mechanical vehicle. Stability of braking moment is important in order to get optimized characteristics of the braking process itself. Most of the brake characteristics and efficiency calculations base on assumption that braking moment should be stable during braking process. During years of tests made on full scale brakes and friction material sample tests, author observed that real braking moment curve is not stable during braking process. This phenomenon is likely to affect braking efficiency and in result slightly change braking distance. In this paper author would like to address this issue by showing brake moment curves made for different brakes and friction materials. Tests, which were author’s base for paper contents, were made using full scale brake testing and friction material sample testing. All of the tests described in the paper were performed in Landing Gear Laboratory of Warsaw Institute of Aviation in which author works on daily basis

Opis:
Common problems of industrial silo design can be solved with the use of the Jenike method. The Jenike method is an established procedure to investigate the critical outlet dimensions of a silo and the flow profile. However, in some cases the Jenike method is assumed to lead to overdesign, especially when silo design is calculated for highly dispersed bulk solids in the nano range or if the bulk solid contains moisture. Another way to determine the critical outlet dimension of a silo is a model test. We then have to consider the boundary conditions, i.e. the particle size, and a possible size reduction of the model silo, which is only possible in a centrifugal field using cohesive bulk solids. In this work, results of experiments in a silo centrifuge regarding scale-up are presented. The experiments have been performed to investigate the critical outlet dimension for a silo for very fine and moist bulk solids.

Opis:
The paper presents a study on the environmental impact on the risk of harbour operations. The hydro-meteorological elements have been recognised as the most important safety factors with regard to the ship entrance into the harbour and berthing inside the docks. They are identified as real time, short and long term factors and they all should be considered in the safety assessment of harbour operations. The risk of each operation should be determined on the basis of weather forecast and the modelled prediction of the total water level, surface currents and waves. Several topics have been discussed in the paper with regard to the safe ship approach and navigation inside the harbour. The application of different tools for the prediction of ship performance is presented. The stochastic method for the determination of probability that the ship will navigate within the boundaries of the required navigational width and low speed manoeuvring standards proposed by Panel H-10 SNAME have been considered. The real scale experiments carried out in Port of Gdynia and the several trials performed using the Full Mission Simulator convinced that the open water model tests are necessary for the proper prediction of ship performance during berthing. The program of the proposed open water investigations is presented in the paper. The experimental stand constructed for the tests of ship-berth interactions, in the lake Silm at the Ilawa Ship Handling Training and Research Centre facilities is described.
