Opis:
The results of research conducted on a supercharged spark ignition gaseous engine are exposed in the paper. The engine was modified to work as an engine with the Miller cycle. Modification of the engine, that allowed it to work in the Miller cycle, dealt particularly with the camshaft. This modification allows changing both intake and exhaust timings independently with limitations of ±20 deg. During the research, the engine was fuelled with compressed natural gas or hydrogen optionally. It was for making comparison between selected engine parameters, while the engine was working on two significantly different fuels. Both fuels were delivered to intake manifold close to intake valve through a fuel mixer. During the research, pressure data was collected with various both spark ignition timings and equivalence ratios, and boost pressures. On the basis of obtained data the parameters as follows: indicated mean effective pressure, coefficient of variance from the indicated mean effective pressure, Normalized Mass Fraction Burn and Heat Release Rate were calculated and discussed. As observed optimal ignition, timing is advanced for the engine working on hydrogen or natural gas as fuel with the Miller cycle when compared to the classic Otto cycle applied to this engine. In all tests of the engine with the Miller cycle coefficient of variance from the indicated mean effective pressure indicates good stability of engine work. Finally, the engine working on hydrogen is characterized by shorter combustion period that resulted from higher laminar flame speed compared to the natural gas fuelled engine.

Miller and Modigliani (MM) proved that the value of a firm is higher if the capital structure consist of equity and debt. The positive influence of the tax shield brings extra benefits for the company. This assumption may be modified by the thin capitalization rules, which excluded the interest paid to shareholders from the tax deductible costs. The article verifies the MM assumption in the Polish tax system, including the domestic regulation of thin capitalization. It has been shown that a loan from shareholders abroad may significantly influence the grounds for introducing such a regulation.

Opis:
In historical work on emigration from Ireland to the New World, it has become widely accepted that Irish speakers were more passive and fatalistic than English speakers, and that they felt that emigration was a form of exile. This article challenges this assumption. In the first part, it is shown that the linguistic argument for this claim lacks both theoretical and empirical foundations. The evidence for Irish, it is shown, does not indicate any passivity on the part of its speakers. In the second part of the article, accounts of life in America by Irish speakers are drawn upon. On the whole, these suggest that Irish speakers, like English speakers, had a wide range of experiences in their new environment. However, they fail to show that language played a significant role in any feelings of alienation among emigrants.

This essay invites a recovery of “wildness” as a way for philosophers to respond to the present moment which includes: an ongoing global pandemic, economic uncertainty, increasing cultural division, and a crisis in higher education broadly that persistently threatens the status of philosophy programs. Drawing on the American thinkers John William Miller and John Dewey and elaborating on their own philosophical defenses of liberal education, I propose a turn to wildness and freedom in our pedagogies through active and embodied philosophical pedagogy, including field philosophy. I offer two examples of courses that begin to invite wildness into the process of philosophical inquiry. The aim of this essay is to consider how wildness in teaching and learning and in doing philosophy might make philosophy stay alive.

The article adopts a contrastive perspective to the study of intertextual references found in Henry James’s novella Daisy Miller (1878) and its two Polish translations by Jadwiga Olędzka (1961) and Magdalena Moltzan-Małkowska (2013). The aim is to identify selected traces of intertextuality included in the source text and analyse how they have been dealt with by each translator in the process of establishing a new intertextual relationship, namely, that between the original and its translation. Assuming that texts do not exist in a vacuum, but are rather propelled by other (con)textual units, the question is whether and to what extent the intertextual tropes enriching the artistic significance of the novella are available and understandable to the reader of its Polish translations.

Opis:
The diesel engine is an indispensable part of technology and it is commonly used in land and marine vehicles. However, diesel engines release NOx emissions due to high combustion temperatures. They have harmful effects on the environment such as sources of photo-chemical fog and climate changes. Therefore, they must be reduced and limited. The Miller cycle application is a NOx control method and it is popular in the recent years to abate NOx produced from the internal combustion engines (ICEs). A performance investigation of a Dual-Miller cycle (DMC) engine in terms of power (PO), power density (PD) and effective efficiency (EE) has been performed using a new finite-time thermodynamics modeling (FTTM) in this study. The effects of engine design and operating parameters on the engine performance (EPER) have been examined. Additionally, the energy losses have been determined resulting from incomplete combustion (IC), friction (FR), heat transfer (HT) and exhaust output (EO). The results presented could be an essential tool for DMC marine engine designers.

This article deals with the “is” – “ought” question in the Thomist natural law tradition. The 20th century revival of natural law theory, in jurisprudence and political theory, has placed its foundations under scrutiny. Do principles of natural law depend on conceptions of human nature? If so – how? Two central claims are made in this article. First, I put forth that there is no obvious position on human nature among contemporary natural law theorists. Some thinkers argue that a natural law doctrine must not rely on accounts of human nature at all. Such is the view of John Finnis, who has been particularly influential in shaping a present understanding of natural law. Several theorists of the tradition, however, find a certain kind of dependence necessary and vehemently argue against Finnis’ interpretation. I suggest, secondly, using a distinction made by David Miller, that the disagreement on human nature is not substantial, but rests on whether one speaks of “dependence” as a matter of logical entailment, as Finnis’ does, or as presuppositional grounding, which seems to be the concept employed by his critics. I argue that one may safely deny that normative principles are derived from accounts of human nature (rejecting the former kind of dependence), while also presupposing that human nature conditions those principles (assuming dependence of the latter kind). Lastly, I put forth two questions that arise for natural law theorists, if they wish to maintain this position.

Madeline Miller’s The Song of Achilles (2011) is an imaginative rewriting of Homer’s Iliad. The writer uses the strategy of transfocalization and enters the text from the point of view of Patroclus. His fresh look offers a new critical perspective both on the moral world of the epic and on Achilles, the great Greek hero whose complex personality and tragic hubris Patroclus observes with emotional understanding. Miller transforms the Homeric sparing narrative of the friendship between Patroclus and Achilles into a touch- ing love story built on their mutual devotion, and locates this narrative at the heart of a world of ruthless violence. This paper will consider the writer’s use of hypertextual adap- tation in the novel from the perspective of the change in the narrative focus of the source, and discuss her objectives and methodology.

An isogeometric boundary element method is applied to simulate wave scattering problems governed by the Helmholtz equation. The NURBS (non-uniform rational B-splines) widely used in the CAD (computer aided design) field is applied to represent the geometric model and approximate physical field variables. The Burton-Miller formulation is used to overcome the fictitious frequency problem when using a single Helmholtz boundary integral equation for exterior boundary-value problems. The singular integrals existing in Burton-Miller formulation are evaluated directly and accurately using Hadamard’s finite part integration. Fast multipole method is applied to accelerate the solution of the system of equations. It is demonstrated that the isogeometric boundary element method based on NURBS performs better than the conventional approach based on Lagrange basis functions in terms of accuracy, and the use of the fast multipole method both retains the accuracy for isogeometric boundary element method and reduces the computational cost.

The article presents a case study of the work safety assessment in an old mill. The analysis was carried out with the use of a proprietary checklist, taking into account the current safety requirements. Non-conformities that were identified as the results of the analysis, had an impact on the level of security. The greatest number of non-conformities concerned the fulfillment of technical requirements. Actions aimed at improving work safety were proposed. The prepared checklist is a universal tool for assessing work safety in mills in Poland.

Bickerstaff’s brainstem encephalitis (BBE) is a rare, immune-dependent disease of brainstem characterized by progressive ophthalmoplegia, ataxia and central nervous system involvement, which may take the form of impaired consciousness and/or pyramidal signs. BBE requires differentiation with many neurological conditions and it is extremely difficult to make the proper diagnosis. We describe the case of a 63-year-old female patient admitted to the Department of Neurology due to speech changes, balance disorder, diplopia and weakness of the right limbs. On admission, neurological examination revealed depressed gag and palatal reflexes, central facial nerve palsy on the right side of the face and paresis of the right limbs. On the second day, progression of neurological deficit was observed – quantitative disturbances of consciousness, absence of gag and palatal reflexes and bilaterally positive Babinski sign. Head MRI did not confirm the presence of recent ischemic changes in the brain. From the fourth day, the patient's general and neurological condition was very severe. She was unconscious with ophthalmoplegia and narrow, non-reactive pupils. Multimodal therapy was administered during hospitalization, observing a gradual improvement in the patient's condition from the thirteenth day of hospitalization. Due to the ambiguous clinical picture, the following diseases were considered in the differential diagnosis: ischemic stroke of the brainstem region, venous sinus thrombosis, posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome, reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome, paraneoplastic brainstem encephalitis and Bickerstaff’s brainstem encephalitis. On the thirty-fifth day, the patient was discharged home. The patient maintained verbal contact with clear speech, proper eye movement and persistent four-limb paresis. After 5 months, the patient was re-admitted to the Department of Neurology to assess the neurological condition and undergo medical check-ups.

An enhancement of the Miller-Tucker-Zemlin (MTZ) model for the asymmetric traveling salesman problem is presented by introducing additional constraints to the initial formulation. The constraints account for ordering of boundary nodes as well as all successive nodes in the salesman tour. The enhanced MTZ subtour elimination constraints are computationally compared with the basic MTZ constraints and the version of MTZ lifted by Desrochers and Laporte. The proposed enhancement shows improved performance on a number of asymmetric TSPLIB instances.

A review of the Miller, Laue and direction indices characterization was made. Excluding or allowing non-coprime indices, depending on whether the lattice is primitive or centred, were compared. The solution of the “spacing counting problem for centred lattices was proposed. It was shown that for centred lattices: (1) Laue indices nh nk nl can represent not only n-th order diffraction on (hkl) planes, but also the first order diffraction from a family of planes (nh nk nl); (2) “integral reflection conditions” are necessary, but not sufficient for the existence of given Miller indices. “Integral reflection conditions” for Laue indices hkl and other “conditions for Miller indices” (hkl) were distinguished. It was shown that in the case of centred lattices, the inference based on the value of n obtained from the equation of lattice planes, may not be correct. The homogeneity of the centred reciprocal lattices has been clarified. “Simple cubic cell with a base” as a choice of unit cell proposed by “general rule” was contrasted with: “unit cell, if not centred, must be the smallest one”. “Integral reflection conditions” for Laue indices and other, new “conditions for Miller indices”, resulting from transformation of centred lattices to unconventional primitive ones have been proposed. Examples of the not correct use of indices in the morphology and diffraction pattern descriptions were shown.

Opis:
The paper tackles the problems connected with the charge exchange in internal combustion engines. The theoretical analysis of the charge exchange process in the SI engine has been presented. The realization of the charge exchange process is connected with the necessity of overcoming the flow resistances, then with the necessity of doing a work, so-called the charge exchange work. The flow resistance caused by throttling valve is especially high at the partial load running of an engine. A system with independent, late intake valve closing has been analysed. The use of the analysed system to governing of an engine load will enable to eliminate a throttling valve from inlet system and reduce the charge exchange work, especially within the range of partial load. The decrease of the charge exchange work leads to an increase of the internal and effective works, which results in an increase of the effective efficiency of the spark ignition engine. The open, theoretical Atkinson-Miller cycle has been assumed as a model of processes proceeding in the engine with variable intake valve actuation. The system has been analysed individually and comparatively with open Seiliger-Sabathe cycle, which is theoretical cycle for the classic throttle governing of engine load. Benefits resulting from application of the system with late intake valve closing have been assessed on the basis of the selected parameters: a fuel dose, a cycle work, relative charge exchange work and cycle efficiency.
