Opis:
This study is specifically concerned with the effect of regular physical activity during menstruation on the course of menstrual cycle among nullipara. Based on the author’s questionnaire, the 152 women participating in the study were divided into three groups A, B and C – depending on their level of physical activity. The physical activity at a moderate level does not significantly affect the regularity of menstrual cycles. The cultivation of moderate physical activity during menstruation does not significantly affect the duration of bleeding. Moderate physical activity is irrelevant to the abundance of menstrual bleeding. Moderate physical activity has no significant effect on menstrual pain and its duration. Women who are physically active at a moderate level throughout their menstrual cycle are less likely to experience symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) than women who are only physically active outside of menstruation and are not physically active, which may indicate that moderate physical activity during menstruation prevents symptoms of premenstrual tension syndrome. Based on the results achieved, it is not possible to clearly determine the relevance of promoting moderate physical activity, with particular emphasis on that during menstruation, among women. The study needs to be continued with particular attention paid to physical activity during the day, the influence of environmental factors and stress on the examined women, and with attention paid to the intensity of pain accompanying bleeding. However, it can be assumed that there is no justification for limiting physical activity during the menstrual bleeding phase.

Opis:
Monitoring the water and electrolyte balance is an integral part of diagnostics and designing an effective therapy of many diseases. Sodium and potassium play a crucial role in the diagnosis of water and electrolyte disorders. The study was conducted to demonstrate the relationship between the occurrence of electrolyte disturbances in women undergoing hysteroscopy due to pathological uterine bleeding. Medical records of 543 patients aged 21-88 (52.8±11.8 years) hospitalized in the Gynecology and Obstetrics Department of the Provincial Specialist Hospital in Biała Podlaska, who underwent hysteroscopic diagnostics due to pathological bleeding from the uterus were collected. 212 women (39.04%) were diagnosed with pathological bleeding from the uterus, 147 women (27.07%) had endomentrial hyperplasia, 104 women (19.15%) were diagnosed with an endometrial polyp, 62 women (11.42%) suffered from heavy menstruations and 18 women (3.3%) had uterine fibroids. The sodium and potassium concentrations were measured using an automated Cobas® 8000 analyzer (Roche). The average concentration of sodium in the serum was 139.84±2.13 mmol L-1 (χ 2 = 35.079; P<0.001), and the average potassium concentration was 4.44±0.37 mmol L-1 (χ 2 = 36.019; P<0.001). Higher values for sodium were recorded in the group of patients with adenomyosis (140.41±2.27 mmol L-1) and patients with uterine fibroids (140.11±1.94) mmol L-1). Statistically significant differences were found in mean sodium concentration values depending on the causes of patients’ hospitalization (H=33.914; P<0.001), and the biggest differences were between patients with ovulation disorders and patients with adenomyosis: 138.86±0.21 mmol L-1 vs. 140.41±2.27 mmol L-1 (Z=5.169; P<0.001). It seems important add measurements of sodium and potassium concentrations to the profile of tests performed in the diagnosis of gynaecological patients referred for hysteroscopy for the reasons presented in the study in order to reduce the risk of complications associated with the loss of these elements.

Opis:
An absentee from the Western culture, the phenomenon of menstruation is an unlikely theme to be found in the British and American media and literature. Historically and culturally the Menstrual blood was considered impure and maudit, thus positioning the menstruating women at the bottom of the power hierarchies, and asserting the social status-quo of the male dominance. Menstruation is also subjected to capitalization which has been shaping the Menstrual attitudes and practices. The aim of the article is to draw a sketch of what menstruating means in the British and American cultures, as well as to reflect on its frequent absence from the cultural deliberations.

Opis:
This paper explores one aspect in the evolution of “buddha-nature” (busshō) in Japan within the context of Buddhist teachings regarding women’s salvation. “Buddha-nature”, symbolised by the lotus throne where buddhas and bodhisattvas reside, was fused with the notion of menstrual impurity due to syncretism with Shintō beliefs. The introduction of the Bloody Pond Sutra (Ketsubon-kyō) solidified discussions on menstruation’s origin, attributing menstrual impurity to women’s “mind” poisons. Practical manifestations of this complex idea included wearing chest talismans. This research sheds light on the evolving “Buddha-nature” concept in Japan and its implications for women’s spirituality.

Opis:
Maximizing athletic performance often leads to eating disorders. Women are more vulnerable than men. The interaction of three disorders (nutrition, menstruation, bone decalcification) is defined as the triad of female athletes. The cause of menstrual disorders results from too little supply of energy in the diet. Eating disorders also apply to men. RED-S syndrome refers to a physiological disorder caused by a shortage of energy and involves the release of metabolism disorders, menstrual disorders, musculoskeletal system, reduction of the activity of the immune system, the release of protein synthesis, disorders of the nervous system, poorer recovery and cardiovascular disorders. The etiology of the RED-S syndrome is a result of a relatively low availability of energy, as in the triad. Among the causes of these phenomena we can enumerate psychological, biological and social interactions. To assess the condition ,especially in sport, questionnaires are most commonly used and they include questions about height, weight, exercise time, perception, eating disorders and menstrual cycle (women). The nutritional education is very important in the prevention and treatment of eating disorders. It suggests the need for an athlete to increase the energy intake and / or decrease exercise expenditure to treat the condition. This paper presents an analysis of the current state of knowledge of the etymology, incidence and effects of eating disorders in athletes based on the available literature.

Opis:
The article presents the results of a survey on the knowledge and experience of Polish women in the area of menstrual poverty. The article raises issues such as: respondents’ knowledge of the symptoms of menstrual poverty, characteristics of groups particularly vulnerable to deprivation in terms of menstrual health and hygiene, as well as the impact of menstrual poverty on the lives of people experiencing it. The survey raises the issue of tabooing and mythicizing the topic of menstruation. Respondents were also asked about initiatives to combat menstrual poverty. The respondents’ experience of menstrual poverty was also a key theme in the survey. The results of the survey indicate that menstrual poverty is an invisible and embarrassing subject, especially in Polish society. It is therefore essential to introduce into the public discourse an uninhibited debate on the psychosocial difficulties related to menstruation.

Opis:
The piece considers the story of the woman with the flow of blood (haimorrhoousa) in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke as it is represented in two works: the homily of Pseudo-Chrysostom (PG 59,575-578) and Kontakion 12 (in the Oxford edition) of Romanos the Melodist. Interpretations of this episode from the gospels touch upon the issue of ritual purity in the Jewish law as well as the attitude of Christian authors toward female menstruation. The texts mentioned above are examined, along with statements from the Fathers of the Church on menstruation, in an attempt to answer the question of whether Christian authors embraced the idea that menstruating women should be excluded from social and religious life. The article shows that the attitude of Christian authors towards menstruating women was in fact generally positive.
