Opis:
Health problem from fluoride contaminated water is more acute in rural and small urban communities. Defluoridation of low contaminated water by inexpensive adsorbents is a substantial practice worldwide. In the study, low-cost sorbents have been investigated as replacements for current costly methods of removing the excess fluoride from water below the certain concentration. The adsorption capacity of iron oxide and cement clay in fluoride removal was investigated by the batch method. The equilibrium time was attained in 3 h and 2 h for iron oxide and cement clay, respectively. Optimum adsorbent dosage was found to be 5 g/dm3. Initial fluoride concentrations for the adsorption studies were 1.24 and 12.2 mg/dm3. Fluoride adsorption isotherm fitted well the Freundlich isotherm with the coefficient of determination >0.99 for both adsorbents. The fluoride adsorption capacity of iron oxide was found higher than that of cement clay due to the high surface area and charge of iron oxide. How-ever both substances can reduce F– contamination below the acceptable limits of 1.5 mg/dm3 for less contaminated water.

Opis:
The successful acid mine drainage (AMD) treatment needs site-specific installation and implementation, as well as the deployment of technology that is compatible with the pollutants contained in the AMD. If key by-products of the AMD can be recovered, the financial sustainability of the AMD remediation method may be greatly improved. Additional research into novel and innovative solutions is necessary to advance in this direction. To accomplish this, it is necessary to have a complete awareness of current remediation technologies that are available and accessible. Active physical treatment methods such as ion exchange, adsorption, electrochemistry, and membrane techniques were examined in this article. Membrane technology excels in terms of ease of use, versatility, and environmental effect but produces brine streams the management of which remains vital for future adoption of the technology. Liquid membranes (LM), Micellar Enhanced Ultra-Filtration (MEUF), and Polyelectrolyte Enhanced Ultra-Filtration (PEUF) are all innovative membrane technologies that may provide some possibilities for metal recovery from chemical sludge and/or brine streams. Electrochemical technologies are considered an attractive alternative for AMD treatment, because they require only electricity as a consumable and can treat AMD to high standards by removing metals via (co)precipitation and sulfate via ionic migration (when an anion-exchange membrane is used in the configuration), while producing significantly less sludge. However, the accepted shortcomings include membrane/electrode fouling produced by (co)precipitates on the active surfaces necessary for the process, a lack of understanding regarding the effective scaling up to industrial scale, and the relatively expensive capital expenditure (CAPEX) required. The removal of heavy metals from AMD effluents by adsorption has a number of technical and environmental benefits, including high efficiency, and environmental friendliness. Despite its benefits, this technique has certain hurdles, such as the production process for low-cost adsorbents.

HY2SEPS was an EU-funded project directed at the reduction of C02 emissions. The principal objective of the project was to develop a hybrid membrane-adsorptive H2/C02 separation technique that would form an integral element of the pre-combustion process. Specific tasks included the derivation of simplified mathematical models for the membrane separation of H2/C02 mixtures. In the present study one of the developed models is discussed in detail, namely that with the countercurrent plug flow of the feed and the permeate. A number of simulations were carried out concerning the separation of binary mixtures that may appear following steam conversion of methane. The numerical results were then compared with the experimental data obtained by FORTH/ICEHT. The estimated fluxes of pure C02, H2, CH4 and N2 are shown alongside those measured experimentally as a function of temperature and C02 partial pressure in Figs 2 - 7. It is concluded that, in general, C02 flux increases monotonically with both temperature and C02 partial pressure. It is also found that the fluxes of hydrogen, methane and nitrogen reach a minimum at a temperature slightly above 323 K. Overall, a good agreement was obtained between the simulations and experiments.

The paper reveals the results of the research on the reverse osmosis recovery of zinc from galvanic electroplating. The pilot plant tests were performed in an electroplating shop. Raw washings were concentrated with a spiral wound 2.5x40" module with a composite polymeric membrane. The research tests have proved that the proposed RO process enables successful concentration of the non-ferrous metal in raw washings. The retentate of the RO process has contained about 96% of the metal previously wasted in washings discharged to the environment. The retentate can be recycled to the mother electroplating process. The permeate of the RO process can be recycled to the washing system of the electroplating shop.

Opis:
The objective of this study was to determine the suitability of the nanofiltration (NF) process to recover the regenerating agent (NaOH) from spent solutions contaminated with organic compounds. NaOH recovery from 2 spent regenerant solutions after cleaning ultrafiltration (UF) membranes (polymeric 30 kDa, ceramic 300 kDa) fouled with natural humic water was carried out using 2 types of NF membranes: NP010P (Na2SO4 rejection: 35–75%) and NP030P (Na2SO4 rejection: 80–95%). It has been shown that the use of the NP030P membrane allows for very high separation efficiency of organic compounds (up to 97% of color intensity reduction) from the tested solutions. It was also observed that the effectiveness of the process, in addition to the type of membrane used, also depends on the time of NF process – along with the elapsed time of the process, the hydraulic and separation properties of the tested membranes deteriorated. The obtained results showed that the use of both tested NF membranes allows for the recovery of NaOH to a degree that allows its re-use.
W przeprowadzonych badaniach określono przydatność procesu nanofiltracji (NF) do odzysku czynnika regenerującego (NaOH) z roztworów poregeneracyjnych zanieczyszczonych związkami organicznymi. Uzyskane wyniki pokazały, że użycie obu testowanych membran nanofiltracyjnych (NP010P oraz NP030P) pozwala na odzysk NaOH w stopniu pozwalającym na jego ponowne użycie. Wykazano, że zastosowanie membrany NP030P pozwala na uzyskanie bardzo wysokiej skuteczności separacji związków organicznych (do 97% usunięcia barwy) z testowanych roztworów. Zaobserwowano również, że skuteczność procesu, oprócz rodzaju użytej membrany, zależała także od czasu prowadzenia nanofiltracji – wraz z upływającym czasem procesu pogarszały się właściwości hydrauliczne i separacyjne testowanych membran.

The efficiency of enzymatic depolymerization in a membrane reactor was investigated. The model analysis was performed on bovine serum albumin hydrolysis reaction led by three different enzymes, for which kinetic equations have different forms. Comparing to a classic reactor, the reaction yield turns out to be distinctly higher for all types of kinetics. The effect arises from increasing (thanks to the proper selectivity of the applied membrane) the concentration of reagents in the reaction volume. The investigations indicated the importance of membrane selectivity election, residence time and at non-competitive inhibition the substrate (biopolymer) concentration in feed stream. Presented analysis is helpful in these parameters choice for enzymatic hydrolysis of different biopolymers.

A zeolite membrane reactor concept for the hydroisomerization of n-hexane was applied experimentally. The results indicate separation selectivities with factors close to 20 for n-, mono- and dibranched components in a gas mixture, as well as nhexane conversions up to equilibrium values. The research octane number calculated for the product stream of the different experiments indicates numbers as high as 85. For the hydroisomerization of C7 alkanes, a concept of two reactors and a zeolite membrane was proposed and an industrial scale process was simulated. A high octane number product containing tribranched, and a part of dibranched, C7 isomers is predicted. Although the product yield was calculated to be only 24% of the process feed, there was an improvement in a research octane number from 57 for the feed to 92 for the product. Both processes show that the application of zeolite membranes in the hydroisomerization of light alkanes can results in a octane number higher, than in the "state of the art" processes. The membrane unit, however, is the main cost driver of the processes, thus, the economical feasibility of industrial scale light alkanes hydroisomerization processes using zeolite membranes is restricted to its further commercial development.

In this study, the Fenton process and nanofiltration were used to purify wastewater from dyeing with reactive dyes. Ferrous sulfate doses ranging from 100 to 1000 mg/dm3 and hydrogen peroxide doses ranging from 2.5 to 10 cm3/dm3were applied. It was found that in the whole range of ferrous sulfate doses, the degree of decolorisation was very high, reaching 97-99%. Consequently the wastewater from the Fenton process was practically completely decolorised. In the case of COD, with increasing doses of ferrous sulfate, the reduction rate initially increased from 25 to 38% and then decreased to 28%. An increase in the hydrogen peroxide dose resulted in a rise in COD reduction to about 50%. It was found that application of the Fenton reaction before the nanofiltration process improved filtration parameters. A clear reduction in the fouling effect of the membrane in the integrated wastewater treatment process was reported as compared to nanofiltration alone.
W pracy zastosowano proces Fentona i nanofiltrację do oczyszczania ścieków pochodzących z procesów barwienia barwnikami reaktywnymi. Stosowano dawki siarczanu żelazawego w zakresie od 100 do 1000 mg/dm3 i dawki nadtlenku wodoru w zakresie od 2,5 do 10 cm3/dm3. Stwierdzono, że w całym zakresie stosowanych dawek siarczanu żelazawego uzyskany stopień odbarwienia ścieków był bardzo wysoki rzędu 97-99%. Tak więc ścieki po procesie Fentona były praktycznie całkowicie odbarwione. W przypadku ChZT wraz ze zwiększaniem stosowanej dawki siarczanu żelazawego stopień redukcji początkowo wzrósł z 25 do 38%, a następnie obniżył się do poziomu 28%. Zwiększając dawkę nadtlenku wodoru uzyskano wzrost stopnia redukcji ChZT do około 50%. Stwierdzono, że zastosowanie procesu Fentona przed procesem nanofiltracji pozwoliło na poprawę parametrów filtracji. Odnotowano wyraźne zmniejszenie „efektu foulingu” membrany w zintegrowanym procesie oczyszczania ścieków, w porównaniu z samą nanofiltracją.

The present study examines the mechanism of natural and accelerated ageing processes in Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) seeds stored at low temperature for one (control) and eight years. The analyses of vitality, electrolyte leakage, protein composition and activity of the proton-pump ATPase (P-ATPase, EC.3.6.1.35) in plasma membrane of Norway spruce seeds have been investigated. Seeds collected in 1999 from northeastern Poland have been treated with accelerated ageing method and compared to the seeds of the same provenance, collected in 1992 (control). The vigor and the vitality of the Norway spruce seeds depend on the age of seeds. After 6 days of experiment both samples of seeds (artificially aged seeds and control) expressed the same percentage of germination and similar electrolyte leakage. Analysis of protein composition in the extracts showed an increased amount of some low molecular-weight proteins in artificially and naturally aged seeds compared to the control. Our results indicate similar level of P-ATPase activity in natural, artificially aged and control seeds. This suggests that natural ageing process can involve changes in plasma membrane protein composition but does not affect the P-ATPase activity.

A novel absorbing pervaporation hybrid technique has been evaluated experimentally for the recovery of ammonia from the gas mixture in a recycle loop of synthesis plants. This process of hybridization brings together the combination of energy-efficient membrane gas separation based on poly(dimethylsiloxane) poly(diphenylsilsesquioxane) with a high selective sorption technique where a water solution with polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG-400) was used as the liquid absorbent. Process efficiency was studied using the pure and mixed gases. The influence of PEG-400 content in aqueous solutions on process selectivity and separation efficiency was studied. The ammonia recovery efficiency evaluation of an absorbing pervaporation technique was performed and compared with the conventional membrane gas separation. It was shown that the absorbing pervaporation technique outperforms the conventional membrane method in the whole range of productivity, producing the ammonia with a purity of 99.93 vol.% using the PEG 80 wt.% solution. The proposed method may be considered as an attractive solution in the optimization of the Haber process.

The case study consisted in the separation of binary test mixtures based on the fast-permeantmain component (N2O, C2H2) and the slow-permeant impurity (1% vol. of N2)using a radial counter-current membrane module. The novel semi-batch withdrawal technique was shown to intensify theseparation process and provide up to 40% increase in separation efficiency compared to a steady-stateoperation of the same productivity.

In this paper, different methods of oxygen production are characterized. The main attention is focused on the use of polymer membranes. Hybrid method is proposed in the process of oxygen production. Membrane is used in the first stage of this method, while in the second one, the cryogenic process is chosen. The calculations of the membrane parameters have been made in Aspen software. The characteristic values for the membrane separation process such as oxygen recovery rate and permeate purity have been determined. Various systems have been analyzed. It has been calculated that energy consumption in the process of cryogenic oxygen production reaches 0.2 kWh/kgO2 or even 0.19 kWh/kgO2 in the membrane process using a vacuum pump, and in the near future, with the improvement of the membrane properties it will be limited to 0.15 kWh/kgO2.
W artykule scharakteryzowano różne metody produkcji tlenu. Główną uwagę skupiono na wykorzystaniu membran polimerowych. W procesie produkcji tlenu zaproponowano metodę hybrydową, w której w pierwszym stopniu stosuje się membranę, zaś w drugim proces kriogeniczny. Obliczenia membran wykonano przy wykorzystaniu programu Aspen. Wyznaczono charakterystyczne wielkości dla procesu separacji membranowej takie jak stopień odzysku tlenu i czystość permeatu. Analizowano różne układy. Obliczono, że przy zastosowaniu pompy próżniowej w procesie membranowym energochłonność kriogenicznego procesu wytwarzania tlenu może wynieść 0,2 kWh/kgO2 lub nawet 0,19 kWh/kgO2, zaś w najbliższej przyszłości wraz z polepszeniem się właściwości membran może być ograniczona do 0,15 kWh/kgO2.

This paper presents a new type of membrane contactors that are integrated with one of the following ways of separation by using absorbents, micelles, flocculants, functionalized polymers, molecular imprints, or other methods that are based on aggregation. The article discusses methods for designing multi-stage cascade, usually counter-current. At every stage of this cascade, relevant aggregates are retained by the membrane, while the permeate passes freely through membrane. The process takes place in the membrane boundary layer with a local cross-flow of the permeate and the retentate. So the whole system can be called a cross-counter-current. The process kinetics “k” must be coordinated with the permeate flux “J” and the rate of surface renewal of the sorbent on the membrane surface, s. This can be done by using ordinary back-flushing or relevant hydrodynamic method of sweeping, such as: turbulences, shear stresses or lifting forces. A surface renewal model has been applied to adjust the optimal process conditions to sorbent kinetics. The experimental results confirmed the correctness of the model and its suitability for design of the new type of contactors.
