    Opis:
    One of the most frequent ways of narrating everyday life in developed countries has been via the printed book. The invention of printing allowed for an ever-increasing mass production of documents of life that systematically established an era of communication and a political economy that had profound implications for the structure of living together. This article departs from the context of my own lifeworld: a lifeworld closely related to printed books. When attempting to explore and understand the overt and covert meanings embedded in the historical development of our social lives and the objects around us, we can turn for assistance to an analysis of the books on our shelves, books that have been constant companions for long periods of our lives. In this article, I propose that any valid interpretation, understanding, and depiction of social reality need to be, in essence, autobiographical. The autobiographical account I present includes how my personal life trajectory led me to the books that surround me. And how, in turn, these books become a reflection of myself and my roots.

    This paper discusses the use of anthropomorphic social robots in the area of safety education. The goal of the study was to investigate whether the use of anthropomorphic social robots increases learning efficiency, and if so, why. The underlying assumption was that anthropomorphic social robots may foster meaning-making due to their human-likeness, in particular a discrepancy between their human-like characteristics and the human frame of reference for such traits, and hence to improvelearning efficiency. In particular this paper discusses the results of a qualitative study conducted in four primary schools. Thestudy has shown that the key role of the robot in increasing learning efficiency is not so much to convey information and help carrying out specific tasks as to increase interest, and hence, motivation to learn. Also, the key factors that shape a successful use of such robots in safety education concern as much pupils as teachers and go far beyond the robot as such.
    Niniejsza praca omawia zastosowanie antropomorficznych robotów społecznych w edukacji w zakresie bezpiecznych zachowań. Celem było zbadanie, czy zastosowanie antropomorficznych robotów społecznych podnosi efektywność nauczania, i jeśli tak, to dlaczego. Podstawowym założeniem było twierdzenie, że antropomorficzne roboty społeczne mają potencjał wspierania procesu tworzenia znaczeń dzięki podobieństwu do człowieka, zwłaszcza poprzez rozbieżność pomiędzy cechami robotów naśladującymi cechy człowieka a ludzkim układem odniesienia dla takich cech. W szczególności niniejsza praca omawia wyniki badania jakościowego przeprowadzonego w czterech szkołach podstawowych. Badanie wykazało, że kluczową rolą robota w procesie podnoszenia efektywności nauczania jest nie tyle przekazywanie informacji i pomoc w wykonywaniu określonych zadań, ile podnoszenie zainteresowania, a przez to motywacji do nauki. Inne czynniki, które wpływają na skuteczne użycie antropomorficznych robotów społecznych do nauczania bezpiecznych zachowań, dotyczą tak samo uczniów, jak i nauczycieli oraz wykraczają daleko poza robota jako takiego.

    This paper reviews qualitative research in the United States, highlighting the ways research has changed in the era of the third age. With growing attention to positive and uplifting aspects of aging, qualitative research has played a critical role in the exploration of the ways in which older adults are engaging in meaningful ways with others. We describe two key methodological approaches that have been important to examining positive aspects of aging and exploring the extent to which a growing number of years of healthy retirement are redefining the aging experience: ethnographic research and grounded theory research. We also review key topics associated with qualitative research in the era of the third age. These topics fit within two dominant frameworks – research exploring meaningmaking in later life and research exploring meaningful engagement in later life. These frameworks were critically important to raising attention to meaningful experiences and interactions with others, and we propose that the agenda for future qualitative research in the United States should continue contributing to these frameworks. However, we note that a third framework should also be developed which examines what it means to be a third ager through use of a phenomenological approach, which will assist in the important task of theory building about the third age.

    This paper discusses how socio-communicative practices that originate in oral tradition, with a focus on Brazilian legends, manifest themselves in the digital environment. It foregrounds the production of discourse objects as a category of analysis and approaches the theoretical assumptions of linguistic and cultural studies through an interdisciplinary approach. It is a study of a theoretical-analytical nature that aims to answer the following research questions: How are Brazilian folk narratives constructed in multimodal texts-based interactions in digital environment? How are the objects of discourse constructed in the analyzed texts? The analyzed texts were collected through screenshots of interactions on public Facebook pages. It is hoped that the results will allow us to understand how digital texts are constructed and show how referential processes contribute to text construction and meaning production, deepening studies of language use in digital environments.

    Although many studies reported that student-created video task could promote learners’ active learning and engagement, the investigation on how the students worked and created the videos is still scarce. The process of video creation in a micro-reality context of English language learning involves social practice and cognition (a socio-cognitive process) of the students. The student-created video is an output-based learning activity that reflects a meaning-making process upon the completion of the project. This paper sheds light on how the students worked on the project through such stages as preparing the materials, setting the scene, selecting the video recording tool and editing the video before the submission. Encapsulated from the videos and semi-structured interviews from 41 Polytechnic students in Indonesia, the approaches that students employed during the process of video creation were explored to arrive at a meaning-making process of learning. As a result, the activity enabled the student active learning, vocabulary building, autonomous learning and self-confidence as well as the student’s technological skill. In addition to that, the challenges encountered by the students during the video-making process will also be presented.

    Since the beginning of time art-making has been a tool to express, preserve, and challenge the extant knowledge in society. Artists do this by finding or creatively constructing new understandings in society. An artist is able to do this through the medium he/she uses to relay the message of the artwork. The medium that an artist uses to express his/her artistic concept has an impact on the character that the artwork will take. The medium of expression forms but one of the many considerations that go through an artist’s mind when creating art. In the process of art-making, an artist seeks to create new meanings or re-imagine old ones by organizing materials and concepts. In so doing, he/she discovers novel ways to get ideas across, and thereby creates new interpretations of social phenomena. In this article, attention is given to meaning-making as a conscious and iterative component of creating art. From a series of in-depth interviews, the authors analyze the inward processes that occur within six artists’ creative praxes and how these lead their construction of meaning. Attention is also paid to how the artists manipulate concepts and how they construct and deconstruct their understandings of these concepts in the course of their creative endeavors.

    Narrative identity allows various experiences to be integrated and incorporated into the concept of the self. Recent studies indicate that being aware of developing the story about the self that brings cohesion and meaning may be adaptive. This paper presents preliminary findings across three studies (two quantitative methods and one mixed) aimed at exploring the phenomenon of awareness of narrative identity in terms of its relations to other aspects of narrative identity and meaning-making (meaning in life, self-esteem, and post-traumatic growth). The total number of participants in all studies was 840 (N1 = 254, N2 = 424, N3 = 162). The results indicate that stronger awareness of narrative identity is related to higher self-narrative inclination and reflexivity and may be adaptive in terms of meaning-making and coping with traumatic events. People who were more aware of a narrative identity produced more elaborated and coherent self-narratives about an important past relationship. Additionally, they had a stronger tendency to integrate these past experiences with a sense of self-identity. Surprisingly, awareness of narrative identity was not related to self-esteem. These findings are discussed in terms of narrative identity literature. Moreover, possible directions for further studies to expand our understanding of awareness of narrative identity are proposed.

    This article opens a consideration around what the embodied, immersive and live exchange of live performance might make us feel and in turn how this multisensual engagement awakens the feeling body, specifically around notions of touch and shame. The discussion centralises the work of South African visual artist and performance artist, Gabrielle Goliath with a critical reading of Stumbling Block (2011/2017). In Goliath’s durational piece the body both of the performer and the audience member are carefully centralised in the production and engagement of the performance. The centralisation of the body in Goliath’s works points towards and facilitates an empathetic engagement during the performance as live event. Some points of departure in the article are how the performance curates relationality between bodies which offer potential affective spaces of touch. Furthermore, this multisensual “unspoken” engagement between bodies reminds us how the body is a communicative instrument. This contemplation therefore critically positions modes of multisensual “felt-seeing” which often fall into the “gaps” of academic spaces and thinking as central bridges in opening humans to new ways of consciously “seeing”.  I consider the encounter outside of text, the multisensual encounter, and ask what this might possibility necessitate.
    Autorka artykułu snuje rozważania na temat uczuć wywoływanych u odbiorcy w kontakcie z fizycznym, absorbującym i żywym performansem, a także doznań fizycznych wywoływanych przez takie wielozmysłowe zaangażowanie, szczególnie w odniesieniu do sfery dotyku i uczucia wstydu. Dyskusja koncentruje się na twórczości południowoafrykańskiej artystki i performerki, Gabrielle Goliath, poddając krytycznej analizie pracę Stumbling Block (2011/2017), która ma charakter nietrwały, a ciało zarówno performera i widza stanowią centrum performansu w zakresie wywoływanego efektu i zaangażowania patrzącego. Takie umiejscowienie ludzkiego ciała w pracach artystki wywołuje u odbiorcy empatię sprawiającą, że angażuje się w pokaz na żywo. Artykuł pokazuje także, jak performans kształtuje relacje pomiędzy ciałami, które stanowią potencjalnie dotykalną przestrzeń. Dodatkowo taka „niewypowiedziana” interakcja między ciałami przypomina nam, że nasze ciało to narzędzie komunikacji, a w takim ujęciu „widzenie-czucie” wielozmysłowe odgrywa znaczącą rolę, ponieważ często rekompensuje niedoskonałą wiedzę naukową i braki w naszym myśleniu, otwierając nas na nowe sposoby świadomego „widzenia”. Autorka analizuje taki rodzaj postrzegania pozatekstowego i wielozmysłowego, a także pyta, co możemy dzięki niemu zyskać.

    This article aims to shed light on how non-heteronormative mothers—whose child had been conceived via artificial insemination of one of them with the sperm of an anonymous donor— decode, experience, and make meaning of diverse (symbolic) dimensions of their social invisibility, as well as how their understandings of the category at hand have an impact on projecting and negotiating their roles as mothers (especially in case of those women who did not give birth to their children). Drawing on specific examples from the field, I analyze how—while acting within the context of anxiety exemplifying their non-existing legal status—non-heteronormative mothers construct the image of self against the backdrop of no ready-made role scripts available, as well as strive towards making oneself (socially) visible. The insights at hand are based on data collected during my six-year ethnographic study of planned non-heteronormative motherhood in Poland, where same-sex relationships are not legally recognized.

    The article discusses the concept of “meaning-making” and age crises as one of the main categories of psychology, and their relationship with the humanities. Existing scientific developments do not pay enough attention to the study of conscious motives and meaning in adults. The practical relevance of this problem is determined, on the one hand, by dynamic processes in the education system, on the other hand - the need to increase life experience, improve the quality of life in general. The article presents a semantic model of the process of meaning-making. The system of meaning-making is connected with the educational system, which includes the semantic sphere. The structure of the system of meaningmaking is the interaction of objects of social development of ways of thinking, views, and cultural activities. The article also describes the concept of age crisis and how it depends on meaning-making. Age development to a new qualitatively specific stage of meaning-making is characterized by abrupt psychological changes in a person’s life. The processes and psychological features of meaningmaking of adults is studied in the current uncertainty of the social, economic, and political situation which forces a person to constantly determine their position and view of the world. The solution of this important question is primarily associated with the activity of a person’s consciousness, which is aimed at identifying the meanings of ongoing events, the constant search for new meanings on the basis of which it would be possible to determine one’s place and vital role in the changing reality. It is found that meaning-making of a personality, its clear awareness, and its reliability are determined by viability, professional, family, and age self-determination in life, which depends on an individual, their life position, sociopsychological, and social maturity and activity. Based on the empirical study, it is concluded that age largely determines the importance of life values and spheres for a person, the level of realization of value orientations, the level of motivation and the level of self-actualization of the adult personality.

    While the concept of human rights may seem basic, it is important for social constructionists to understand that the meaning of the term can vary from country to country. In this paper, I will examine the translation and meaning of human rights and human rights lawyer in Japanese. I show how the vagueness of the term is important and I demonstrate the dialectical relationship between domestic social issues and international organizations concerning human rights. I also demonstrate how the combination of powerful international organizations and domestic claims can sometimes be successful in changing a country’s policy.

    This paper aims to shed light on how various micro- and macro-level contexts shape the parenting decision-making process among same-sex female couples. Drawing on my six-year study of two-mother planned families in Poland, I focus on voicing their experiences related to the process of family formation from its genesis and their related desires to fit in the social fabric despite being different. Specifically, I illustrate how those who navigate within the unfavorable socio-cultural climate give meanings to their experiences thereof, and thus negotiate their moral right to become mothers, as well as what kind of interactional and contextual factors shape how same-sex female couples in Poland embrace motherhood as an option they can choose. That is, how they decide to do what is largely considered normal—to enlarge their families.
    Celem artykułu jest refleksja na temat tego, jak odczytywanie zjawisk zachodzących na poziomie mikro i makro współkształtuje proces podejmowania decyzji o powiększeniu rodziny w przypadku jednopłciowych par kobiet w Polsce. Odnosząc się do wyników sześcioletnich badań z udziałem rodzin planowanych, koncentruję się na przedstawieniu doświadczeń kobiet na etapie myślenia o możliwości powiększenia rodziny w kontekście ich chęci „wpasowania” rodziny nieheteronormatywnej z dzieckiem w tkankę społeczną. Akcent położony jest na zilustrowanie tego, jak badane – działając w ramach niesprzyjających warunków społeczno-kulturowych – nadają swoim doświadczeniom na tym polu znaczenie, negocjując moralne prawo do zostania matkami. Jednocześnie analizie poddane zostają ukontekstualizowane czynniki interakcyjne, które wpływają na myślenie o macierzyństwie nieheteronormatywnym w kategoriach możliwości. A zatem przybliżane jest to, w jaki sposób jednostki wychodzące poza umowną ramę heteronormatywności podejmują decyzję o powiększeniu rodziny, co – w przypadku osób mieszczących się w jej obszarze – uznawane jest za normalne.

    Opis:
    The aim of this paper is to shed light on how various interactional and interpretational contexts arising from specific researcher—research participants relationship established in the course of doing ethnographic study on sensitive, and thus often enough resistant to immediate cognition, phenomenon, namely, lesbian parenting in Poland, as well as different ways of embracing these, may factor into the research process. Drawing on specific dilemmas I encountered while doing the study at hand—from engaging a hard-to-reach population that, in a sense, wished to be reached, and the consequences thereof; through being pushed out of the comfort zone as the women under study, in the wake of becoming acquainted with the analysis I offered, “switched” from narrating their “in-orderto motives” to reflecting on the “because motives” behind their actions; to contextualizing emotions arising as my response to experiencing the issues they face (on a daily basis), to name a few—my goal here is to discuss how different ways of collecting and analyzing data—in the context of developing rapport with the women under study—have had an impact on conceptualizing and (re)framing the data at hand.
    Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przyjrzenie się temu, w jaki sposób osadzenie relacji na linii badacz–badani, jaka powstaje w toku realizacji badań etnograficznych dotyczących zjawisk trudno dostępnych bezpośredniemu poznaniu, w tym przypadku macierzyństwa lesbijek w Polsce, w różnych kontekstach interakcyjnych i interpretacyjnych, jak i określone sposoby radzenia sobie w ramach tych kontekstów mogą wpłynąć na proces badawczy. Odnosząc się do konkretnych dylematów, jakich doświadczyłam w toku badania – począwszy od docierania do trudno dostępnej grupy, która – w pewnym sensie – chciała, by do niej dotarto, oraz następstw takiej sytuacji; poprzez poczucie bycia wypychaną ze strefy komfortu, gdy po zapoznaniu się z częścią analizy danych badane kobiety przechodziły od werbalizowania motywów „ażeby” do refleksji nad motywami „ponieważ”; po analityczne kontekstualizowanie emocji, które pojawiały się jako reakcja na doświadczanie problematycznych dla badanych obszarów ich codziennego funkcjonowania – moim celem jest naświetlenie tego, w jaki sposób – w kontekście relacji z badanymi – określone sposoby zbierania i analizowania danych mogą wpływać na kategoryzację i (re)konceptualizację danych.
