Opis:
Numerical calculations are used increasingly often to obtain a stress-strain state in many engineering problems. A popular program for this type of calculation which makes use of the finite difference method (a continuous method) is Itasca's FLAC3D. However, an important limitation of FLAC3D is the difficulty of geometry creation. This paper presents new open-source programs allowing the preparation of numerical models in a third-party software (ANSYS, SolidWorks) and their conversion to internal FLAC3D geometry files. The converters have been written in BASH-scripting language and published under the terms of the GNU General Public License, which allows the free distribution and/or modification of the software with some limitations.

Opis:
Purpose: The aim of the research presented in this paper was to determine the impact of voids behind the lining on shaft stability. Methods: This paper presents an example of extending the FLAC3D with the possibility of the simulation of concrete detachment and separation under specific conditions by means of a developed FISH routine. Results: The appearance of voids and cavities behind the lining has been repeatedly observed in active shafts in Polish coal mines and can lead to the emergence of tensile forces in the lining. The study included 366 models of shafts using the rock mass properties of typical shale stone, coal, and sandstone found in the Upper Silesian Coal. Practical implications: The presented concrete spalling algorithm may be used, especially, for the stability evaluation of locally damaged shaft lining or when there is a suspicion of void behind the lining. Originality/ value: An important limitation of all continuous methods is the inability (except when using some additional tools) to simulate the rotations of predefined elements (blocks) and their separation from the rest of the object. The concrete spalling algo-rithm presented extends the capabilities of FLAC3D with the possibility of simulating the detachment and separation of destroyed lining fragments.

Opis:
The main goal of this work is the integration of in-house software with commercial numerical software based on the finite element method (FEM). The main idea is to develop a universal interface to perform process simulations with multiscale models. The interface allows the combination of external procedures with commercial software with minimum programmer’s work putting in integration. As an example, the model of material recrystallization of steel was implemented, added to the commercial application, and the software was tested for a process defined as a sequence of compression and cooling. The material model takes into consideration each type of recrystallization that occurs during a sequence of thermal and mechanical processing such as static recrystallization (SRX), dynamic recrystallization (DRX), and meta-dynamic recrystallization (MDRX). It allows the prediction of recrystallized volume fraction (X) and grain growth on each step of numerical simulation for each Gauss point in the computation domain. The presented multiscale model of process sequences not only allows to calculate microscale model parameters such as grain growth and recrystallized volume fraction, but also reflects the impact of the microscale model on macroscale parameters.

This paper outlines a method of determining the deformation and strength parameters for a hypothetical, homogeneous, substitute material which approximates the properties of heterogeneous materials in reinforced concrete elements. The model of the substitute material creates a concrete reference model, in which the static - strength - deformation parameters were modified on the basis of the homogenizing function with the homogenization coefficient assumed as the effective reinforcement ratio of the reinforced concrete structural elements. The results of the comparative analysis of the numerical models using the hypothetical substitute material with experimental results for statically loaded beams and deep beams taken from the literature are presented.
W pracy przedstawiono model hipotetycznego materiału zastępczego do analizy konstrukcji żelbetowych. Model ten opracowano z wykorzystaniem metodyki homogenizacji elementów żelbetowych. Podstawą metodyki homogenizacji elementów żelbetowych jest sposób określenia właściwości odkształceniowo – wytrzymałościowych materiału zastępczego. Sposób ten polega na modyfikacji parametrów dowolnego modelu betonu (tj. tak zwanego modelu referencyjnego), np. powszechnie stosowanego modelu materiału plastycznego zniszczenia opracowanego przez Lublinera i.in., zmodyfikowanego przez Lee and Fenvesa i włączonego do systemu oprogramowania Abaqus, z wykorzystaniem funkcji homogenizacyjnej Ph = Pc + Fh ⋅ Ps.

The problem of ensuring the safe and efficient cranes operations in automated manufacturing processes involves the needs of the operating workspace identification, especially in the automation mode. However, this paper describes the problem of overhead travelling crane's workspace identification with the stereovision. Main authors’ attention was focused on the stereo pictures matching problem through optimization exist disparity computation methods with algorithms optimization by completion with implement correlation matching algorithms. The stereo system is based on the single camera localized under the crane trolley that allows obtaining the sequences of stereo snapshots of crane workspace during the crane or trolley movement. Typically, disparity was produce by calculating the displacement of each pixel of the stereo image along an epipolar line. The disparity software optimization was based on matching algorithms architecture. In this article, the disparity optimization procedure achieved by produce disparity on the ROI (Region of Interest) method is described. Disparity was obtained with the help of sets homologous pixels collections. These sets were determinate with variety kind of similarity measures, which was implemented to disparity search algorithm. Each disparity map (based on the separate similarity measure) was tested under outward appearance and computing time criteria.

A molecular dynamics approach to the deformation and stress analysis in structured materials is presented. A new deformation measure for a lumped mass system of points is proposed. In full consistency with the continuum mechanical description, three kinds of stress tensors for the discrete system of atoms are defined. A computer simulation for a set of 105 atoms forming a sheet undergoing tension (Case 1) and contraction (Case 2) is given. Characteristic microstress distributions evoked by a crack propagation illustrate the mechanical problem considered.

The paper presents the results of a comparative analysis between numerical calculations of T-stubs of the 3rd stage of FEM models hierarchical validation and the results of laboratory tests. The procedure for the development of the material characteristics used in numerical calculations of FEM models is presented. The scope of this article allows determining the non-linear characteristics of the T-stub which maps the work of the end-plate joint of the beam to the column in the tensile zone. The results of laboratory tests of a series of T-stubs made of rolled profiles (HEB240, HEA240) and of welded profiles (thickness of end-plate: tp = 12 mm and tp = 20 mm) have been presented. The principles of shaping the geometrical features of the FEM model of end-plate joints of the T-stub type are given, with particular emphasis on the shaping of the bolt with a thread. The impact of the bolt thread on the accuracy of the obtained results was assessed. The criterion of reliability of the obtained results with respect to the maximum force in the bolt obtained on the basis of laboratory tests in the axial tensile test of the bolts in the configuration: bolt - washer - nut was formulated.

Opis:
This paper presents the effects of mixing non-homogeneous bicomponent granular structures by the flow method with the use of an inverted cone insert as a supporting element. The analysis of homogeneity of mixtures after 10 consecutive flows was carried out based on computer image analysis. Based on these tests, the use of a nonlinear regression for the mo-delling of two selected parameters of the process was proposed. Spatial dependence was described by the relation between the va-riance of the tracer distribution (dependent variable) and density ratio of the mixed components, and the diameter of the cone insert used (independent variables). The mathematical description was made with the use of a ‘nonlinear regression’ module. The results obtained in these tests proved that the use of supporting insert improves the degree of mixability of granular materials. The two-dimensional model in the form of a quadratic function may be a for-mula for describing the influence of selected parameters on the homogeneity of a granulate mixture before the beginning of the mixing process.

The goal of the research carried out was to develop the fuzzy systems, allowing the determination of the Jominy hardenability curve based on the chemical composition of structural steels for quenching and tempering. Fuzzy system was created to calculate hardness of the steel, based on the alloying elements concentrations, and to forecast the hardenability curves. This was done based on information from the PN-EN 10083-3: 2008. Examples of hardenability curves calculated for exemplar steels were presented. Results of the research confirmed that fuzzy systems are a useful tool in evaluation the effect of alloying elements on the properties of materials compared to conventional methods. It has been demonstrated the practical usefulness of the developed models which allows forecasting the steels’ Jominy hardenability curve.

The article presents a computational model build with the use of artificial neural networks optimized by genetic algorithm. This model was used to research and prediction of the impact of chemical elements and heat treatment conditions on the mechanical properties of ferrite stainless steel. Optimization has allowed the development of artificial neural networks, which showed a better or comparable prediction result in comparison to un-optimized networks has reduced the number of input variables and has accelerated the calculation speed. The introduced computational model can be applied in industry to reduce the manufacturing costs of materials. It can also simplify material selection when an engineer must properly choose the chemical elements and adequate plastic and/or heat treatment of stainless steels with required mechanical properties.

Opis:
The role of capillary pumping on the course of cleaning porous materials containing liquid contaminants using supercritical fluids was investigated numerically. As a specific process to be modelled, cleaning of porous membranes, contaminated with soybean oil, using supercritical carbon dioxide as the cleaning fluid (solvent) was considered. A 3D pore-network model, developed as an extension of a 2D drying model, was used for performing pore scale simulations. The influence of various process parameters, including the coordination number of the pore network, the computational domain size, and the external flow mass transfer resistance, on the strength of the capillary pumping effect was investigated. The capillary pumping effect increases with increasing domain size and decreasing external flow mass transfer resistance. For low coordination numbers of the pore network, the capillary pumping effect is not noticeable at macro scale, while for high coordination numbers, the opposite trend is observed – capillary pumping may influence the process at macro scale. In the investigated system, the coordination number of the pore network seems to be low, as no capillary pumping effects were observed at macro scale during experimental investigation and macro-scale modelling of the membrane cleaning process.

Purpose: This paper includes results of the first stage of research aimed at the development of recommendations for physicians in order to help them to choose a particular type of cerebral arteries aneurysms treatment. Methods: Recent studies show that the majority of aneurysms develop as a result of hemodynamic and degenerative lesions of the vascular wall. Obviously, such wall damage can be studied using the methods of continuum mechanics and numerical simulations. Biomechanical modelling allows us to study hemodynamic parameters and stress-strain state of these arteries in health and disease, and to formulate practical recommendations for the necessity and reasonable selection of a particular type of cerebral arteries aneurysm treatment. Results: At this stage the realistic geometric models of arterial circle of Willis were built for its normal state and in the presence of aneurysms. The ultrasound analysis of circle of Willis was conducted in order to obtain blood flow parameters and the boundary conditions for carotid and vertebral arteries. Also, the mechanical properties of these arteries were investigated and constants of the Mooney–Rivlin strain energy function were obtained. Conclusions: Thus, the boundary problem describing the behaviour of human Willis circle arteries was stated. Further, this problem will be solved numerically using the finite element method. The numerical results will be analyzed from the point of view of the influence of the mechanical factors on the emergence, growth and rupture of circle of Willis aneurysms.

Numerical simulations of tension and shear tests for a polycrystalline, anisotropic material were performed using crystal plasticity theory. The slip was considered here as the main mechanism of plastic deformation. Constitutive equations to describe the elastic-plastic deformation caused by the slip are presented. The generation and meshing of various shapes geometries (cubic and paddy shapes) with randomly-orientated grains by means of open source program NEPER program was shown. The Voronoi tessellation was used in order to include morphological properties of a crystalline material. The selected results of elastic-plastic analyses (stress, strain distributions and the macroscopic stress-strain resulting from homogenization) are presented here. The results obtained show the non-uniform distribution of stress and strain for different grains associated with their crystal orientation. The crystal plasticity finite element modelling of materials subjected to plastic deformation is important for microstructure-based mechanical predictions, as well as for the engineering design and to perform simulations involving not only the change of a material’s shape at a macro level but also the phenomena occurring in material in a micro-scale.
