Opis:
Seven major types of sea space use (Nature Protection Measures, Fisheries Ex- ploitation, Geological Exploitation, Recreation, Large Infrastructures, Navigation, Military uses) in the Polish Marine Areas are presented in terms of how much space is used (km2) for each use and the degree of overlap among the different uses. The greatest degree of conflict is noted with regard to Nature Protection (which overlaps with 60% of the areas used for Recreation and Geological Exploitation), and Fisheries Exploitation (which overlaps with 60% of the areas used for Nature Protection, Recreation, Infrastructure and Navigation). On the other hand, Fisheries Exploitation areas are the least disturbed by other users, and its major competitor is Nature Protection, which claims 20% of the areas used by fisheries. A GIS–based map that illustrates the degree of conflict is included, and the authors suggest participatory management as the proper way to minimize conflicts over sea space use and to promote the effective protection of natural resources.

The variability of the marine boundary layer parameters over the Baltic Sea and its sub-basins and their impact on the 6 h, monthly or seasonal deposition of oxidized nitrogen compounds was studied using results of the Hilatar chemistrytransport model, the 6th hour forecasts of the HIRLAM weather prediction model and meteorological measurement data. The monthly load of oxidized nitrogen was highest in the winters of 1993–1995 and 2000, and lowest in 1996–1997 and 2005; no trend was detected. Short-time correlations were low, but a significant correlation of the monthly deposition with the NAO index and ice-season was found over northern sub-basins.

Opis:
The paper discusses the possibilities of modelling the bi-directional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) in sea areas polluted by oil. Three sea basin models are considered: a coastal one free of oil, one polluted by an oil film and one polluted by an oil emulsion. The following concentrations of oil were compared: for the film, 1 cm3 of oil per 1 m2 water surface, for the emulsion 1 cm3 of oil in 1 m3 of water. The optical properties of Romashkino crude oil were taken into consideration, as were various angles of incident solar light. The conversion of BRDFs into a directional distribution of the optical contrast of polluted areas is demonstrated.

The present qualitative and quantitative study on macrozoobenthos was conducted in 1998 in the coastal zone of the Baltic Sea adjacent to the Słowinski National Park (SNP). The macrozoobenthos of this zone exhibited quantitative scarcity (12 species) and low content of the wet mass. More frequent were only Oligochaeta, Pygospio elegans, and Batyporeia pilosa. Because of a better specific diversity, density, and wet mass of the macrozoobenthos in the zone outside 1 nautical mile limit, the author suggests widening the proposed marine protected zone of the SNP giving it the status of marine Landscape Park up to 3 nautical miles.

Opis:
Marine plastic pollution causes adverse effects on global environment and marine ecosystems, particularly in marine protected areas. However, little is known of the effects of marine plastic debris on marine ecosystem services, human wellbeing, society, and the economy. We selected Phu Quoc Marine Protected Area (Phu Quoc MPA) for gaining an insight into current marine plastic debris as a first step towards understanding its effects on the environment and biodiversity in the region. This study applied secondary data analysis, semi-structured interviews, field measurements, and the quadrate line transect method in pursuit of the objective of the study. The findings reveal that marine plastic debris disposed of in Phu Quoc MPA dominantly came from diverse sources including rivers, streams, canals, tourism service providers, and marine aquaculture development areas. The abundance of macroplastic on the beaches was approximately between 1.109 and 0.248 items/m2 (equivalent to 0.082 ± 0.021 kg/m2). Most of the macroplastic were single-use plastics and accounted for more than 82%. The average size was approximately 14.932 ± 1.846 cm for items less than 30 cm. The remaining ones were HDPE plastic bags and plastic debris. The macroplastic and microplastic need to be stopped in order to encourage sustainable management of waste in the region.
Pozostałe to torby foliowe HDPE i odpady z tworzyw sztucznych. Należy powstrzymać wyrzucanie makroplastiku i mikroplastiku, aby zachęcić do zrównoważonego gospodarowania odpadami w regionie.

This study discusses the marine accident involving the Cosco Busan, the container ship that hit the base of the Delta Tower of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge in November 2007. An analysis of the elements resulting in the accident and its consequences has been carried out, followed by an analysis of the navigational risk using mathematical and tabular values. Mathematical values refer to the navigational risk in a specific sailing area, while tabular values refer to the navigational risk using a risk assessment. The main goal of this research was to identify and propose new measures that are correlated with a risk assessment. These measures should be applied in areas where an accident takes place so that future marine accidents can be reduced.

The paper presents the processing of EGNOS integrity data received either directly from the satellite network or the Sisnet internet relay. Relationship between the individual frames in EGNOS messages has been described. Usefulness of these data was indicated by the three examples. In the first example data form EGNOS was used to compare integrity parameters and the calculated position error. In further examples the simulated position with error and calculated integrity parameters were implemented together. The results were presented in two ways: with use of dedicated program which presents only ship contours (the one not covering GNSS uncertainty and the one covering this uncertainty called Marine Vessel Protection Area) and as a layer in existing ECDIS.

This paper presents an innovatory diagnose method of workspace areas inside marine diesel engines equipped with turbocharger. The main aim of the conducted research is diagnosing workspace areas inside engines without indicator valves. This is a fundamental diagnostic issue because these engines are in common operation in the Polish Navy. The proposed method is based on the measurements of exhaust gases pressures in the characteristic cross sections of the exhaust channel connecting engine's cylinders with turbocharger's turbine.
W artykule zaprezentowano nowatorską metodę diagnozowania przestrzeni roboczych okrętowych tłokowych silników spalinowych z turbodoładowaniem. Celem opracowywanej metody jest parametryczna ocena stanu technicznego przestrzeni roboczych silników niewyposażonych standartowo w zawory indykatorowe. Celowość prowadzenia badań nad alternatywną do indykowania metodą diagnostyczną wynika z powszechności stosowania silników niewyposażonych przez producentów w zawory indykatorowe. Proponowana metoda umożliwia ocenę stanu technicznego przestrzeni roboczych silnika na podstawie pomiarów ciśnienia w przekrojach charakterystycznych kanału wylotu spalin łączącym cylindry silnika z turbiną turbosprężarki.

Wake waves produced by fast ferries bring about significant changes in the optical parameters of sea water in the c. 1 m thick near-bottom layer of the coastal areas of Tallinn Bay. The greatest of these changes occur at relatively small depths, but the duration of the influence increases with increasing depth. Rough quantitative estimates suggest that the overall influence of fast ferry traffic in Tallinn Bay may result in an annual loss of the order of several hundred litres of fine sediments from each metre of the coastline.

The Controller Area Network (CAN) bus standard was developed in the 1980s and is in widespread use in automobile, vehicular, aviation, and other networks. The CAN bus was introduced in the maritime environment with the adoption of the National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) 2000 standard in the late-1990s. Many papers have been written about the CAN bus protocols and security vulnerabilities but there is sparse literature about use of the CAN bus in the maritime environment. Part I of this paper is a technical overview, describing CAN bus standards and operation, with particular attention to its use with the NMEA 2000 maritime communications standard. Part II of this paper describes security vulnerabilities in terms of loss of confidentiality, integrity, or availability of information (such as eavesdropping, denial-of-service, and spoofing), and mitigations specific to the maritime environment.

Biogeochemical and trophodynamic processes as well as hydrodynamic factors play a major role in the structure and function of mangrove ecosystems. This study outlines field experiments on wave motion and suspended sediment concentration carried out at Nang Hai, Can Gio mangrove forest, Southern Vietnam. Pressure sensors were used to measure sea surface elevation, and Optical Backscatter Sensors (OBS) were applied to detect infrared (IR) radiation scattered from suspended particles in order to measure turbidity and suspended sediment concentrations. The experimental results indicate that most of the energy is dissipated inside the mangrove forest as a result of wave-trunk interactions and wave breaking. The suspended sediment concentration depends on wave intensity and tidal current velocity. Wave action is one of the main factors forcing sediment transport and coastal erosion at the study site; even the wave field at the study site is not so strong. The establishment of mangrove vegetation can encourage the deposition of sediment, or at least the retention of the flood-tide sediment influx.

This study reports the propagation dynamics of the Kara Sea surface desalinated layer (SDL) during the summer and autumn seasons. We analysed shipboard measurements data collected in 2013–2018 and MODIS ocean colour data that correlated with the shipboard ones. We formulated a comparatively strict criterion to determine the SDL border based on satellite data. For that, we analyzed the shipboard flow-through measuring system data obtained while crossing the surface desalinated layer border. Further, we used a regional algorithm to process the satellite data and estimate the coloured dissolved organic matter absorption coefficient for the Kara Sea. The results demonstrate a significant effect of the wind regime on the interseasonal and interannual variability of the transformation of the SDL boundaries. The positions of the surface desalinated layer boundaries at different times during 2013–2018 are given. The obtained results are important for calculating the heat balance and analyzing the Kara Sea bio-productivity.
