Opis:
Religion is a powerful phenomenon arising in and from society. Various efforts have been done to understand religion as a natural phenomenon, which could be framed in the language of science. In this paper, I forward a sui generis approach to the naturality of religion, where religion is explained as one of the next stages in broader natural processes of self-organization. Furthermore, having framed like this the naturality of the religious experience, the paper explores the contemporary debate of current religious expressions. It is suggested that the arrival of science and the modern society have changed some expressions of religious experiences; while, nonetheless, keeping their capacity to self-organize societies. The magical realist society, as the society capable of disguising the magic of religion within the realism of the scientific ethos, is presented and discussed as a modern secular expression of religion, capable to cope with the challenges of science through the dynamics of modernity and capitalism.

The purpose of the research was to present one of the manifestations of magical thinking in late childhood, i.e. belief in the causative power of words, and relations between this phenomenon and language. One hundred and three primary school students (43 girls and 60 boys), grades 4 to 6, aged 10 to 13 were studied. A significant relation was found between belief in the direct effect of words on reality, and correct comprehension and number of phraseological units concerning the causative power of words.

Threat of important resources of any individual may be accompanied by thinking based on the laws of magic (Keinan, 1994; Rozin, Millman and Nemeroff, 1986). The aim of three studies was to examine how different sorts of distress occurring in a romantic context such as insecure attachment style and situationally manipulated bonds deprivation versus connection are associated with a tendency to magical thinking (MT) about the loved one. As expected, attachment anxiety was a positive predictor of MT especially among people who were not in a romantic relationship or those experiencing deprivation of romantic bonds. Individuals with high attachment anxiety were characterized by greater levels of magical thinking at the beginning of the relationship than in the later stages. Avoidant attachment allowed the negative prediction of magical thinking but only among those who presently were in romantic relationships or those experiencing increased situational closeness to the partner. The regulatory function of MT is being discussed.

Opis:
This paper examines ancient glyptics that provide evidence for the merging of the cults of Thoth, the Egyptian god of wisdom and writing, and GraecoRoman Hermes/Mercury. With the use of semantics and iconological methodologies, the paper demonstrates that the popularity of the syncretic deity Hermes-Thoth was far greater than previously thought and, in fact, comparable to that of other syncretic figures, such as Hermanubis. This is possible because the analysis is not limited to the iconography of magical gems that clearly refer to this deity represented in figural form, but also encompasses symbolic amulets featuring rebuses which, if properly read, refer to Hermes-Thoth as well. It is argued that kerykeion was not the only Hellenising element used to mark Hermes’s nature in the cult of Hermes-Thoth. The article also contributes to the wider discussion on the identification and function of magical gems and amulets in general.

The ever-growing need for learning, especially the English language becoming lingua franca, has created a huge challenge for teachers of English. There have been many conceptions of the teacher's role and the work they perform, however, these notions do not constitute a perfect model of a teacher as an educator of many young generations living in the changing world. The teacher’s role is to have the ability to develop themselves, to be able to reflect on their actions, to be creative and to have a high level of critical consciousness. The article presents the results of the research into types of consciousness of English teachers in lower secondary schools according to the types distinguished by Paulo Freire.

This paper aims at discussing the aetiology, etymology, characteristics and phraseology of pain feeling, infliction and healing in ancient Egyptian religious, magical and literary texts. It examines the roles of the inflictors of pain and their effect on those who were vulnerable to their infliction. It also discusses the roles of the pain healers. Furthermore, it explains the notion of pain infliction and analyses the types of pain, revealing its experience in ancient Egypt. It discusses how it felt, was conceptualised, generated, assessed, how deities, demons, dead and living individuals inflicted and healed it. In relevant contexts, it discusses the places where pain was inflicted and the consequences of such infliction.

The line between Orthodox Christianity and pagan/folk customs and beliefs in the fifteenth century Slavia  Orthodoxa was  not  precisely  drawn.  The  population  called  upon  spiritual forces of all kinds, to heal illnesses and injuries. Though the official position of the Orthodox Christian Church was to condemn and suppress these pre-Christian beliefs, certain elements such  as  magical  words  were included  in  Church-sanctioned  texts.  The  fifteenth-century South Slavic  trebnik (Hilandar HM.SMS.378) is one example of such a text. In addition to its  canonical  material,  it  contains  a healing  rite  for  a  snakebite,  which  blends  Orthodox Christian elements and pre-Christian ones, utilizing magical words. In this article, I examine Hilandar HM.SMS.378 – the magical words, the symbolism, and the  cultural  background  –  and  compare  it  with  two  similar  rites  from  a medieval  South Slavic lječebnik (‘book of healing’) transcribed by V. Jagićin 1878. I also discuss the possibility that the three rites share a common origin.

Opis:
The poetical determinants of magical realism, although several elements had already been present in Croatian literature from at least the time of the generation of the „Borgesian“ writers, and also earlier, have not been the subject of more in-depth research until recently. And yet, novelistic prose in Croatia, under the influence of similar movements in the World-literature scene, is still a witness to its appearance. In our investigation we will research the elements of magical realism in relation to the concepts and constructs of the Other and the Different in the corpus of these recent Croatian novels: Baba Jaga je snijela jaje (Baba Jaga Laid an Egg) (2008) by Dubravke Ugrešić, Črna mati zemla (Black Mother the Earth) (2013) and Ciganin ali najlijepši (Gypsy but the Most Beautiful) (2016) by Kristijan Novak as well as Prevaranti: Iskupljenje (The Cheaters: Redemption) (2016) by Dorotea Vučić. Literary-theoretical approaches have linked magical realism (since its beginnings in Latin American Literatures) with statements on the Other and the Different (Postcolonial approaches), and in this research we will present how elements of the same function within the context of the 21st century Croatian novel. In her novel, D. Ugrešić uses the theme of aging in the post-transitional nations of Eastern Europe to present the context of the construction of the Other and the Different, realised with the aid of magical-realist elements and characteristics. K. Novak presents a psychosocially traumatised child in his novel Črna mati zemla as well as the Romani community in Ciganin, ali najljepši. D. Vučić also uses this same ethnic group as her theme in her novel, which among all these cited novels is closest to the genre of magical realism, yet her Other is the former collective state of South Slavs, which is literarily constructed as a magical space titled Tromeđe (Tripoint), with emphasis on historical precedents allowing its recognition. After the topic of magical realism is 57 discussed, through a reading of the most important theoretical texts, as a mode and genre as well as its relationship to realism and the fantastic, the presence of these elements in the aforementioned texts will be placed under scrutiny, so that after this, with the aforementioned poetological framework, the concepts and constructs of the Other and the Different will be investigated. Magical realism is recognised as a mode which deconstructs dominant metanarratives (familial, social, political, founded in tradition or actual, universal and local). Its incorporation into the mimetic narrative of novelistic prose texts informs the entirely actual social engagement of these authors, emphasised, in fact by these aforementioned concepts. The deconstruction of dominant metanarratives and the focus of the differences in human experience and the concept of reality, as well as the approaches of the magical realistic mode, are considered here in the poetics of the 21st Croatian novel.

Apart from weddings, there are numerous other occasions to set up young trees. The author also attempts to interpret the tradition, describe the functions of young tree setting in the limelight of its magical, artistic and ethnic contexts from the 1950s to the present days.

This paper focuses on the former Austrian crown land of Galicia and Lodomeria and its return in literary texts of a new generation that can recall it only from collective and family memory. Spaces like Galicia are situated in shifting political borders and often marked by (fragmented) memories connected to traumas caused by migration, forced resettlements, expulsions, or violence. The rediscovery of these spaces, often from nostalgia for a lost home and bygone times, is the starting point of many narratives of the postmemory generations in contemporary literature. Authors use new rhetorical strategies when dealing with adversarial nationalistic and traumatic topics: ironic nostalgia, gonzo, and magical realism. These narratives do not verify “truths,” instead they play with different myths, possibilities, and “alternative futures.” The analysis includes Tomasz Różycki’s Dwanaście stacji (2004), Sabrina Janesch’s Katzenberge (2010), and Ziemowit Szczerek’s Przyjdzie Mordor i nas zje (2013).

The present article concerns the question of the formulas which both religion and magic use. Although even if they often sound identical, their understanding and their role are radically different. The article consists of four parts. The first part provides examples of Christian magical papyri dating from the first centuries, which show the use of both the New Testament as well as the terms and dogmatic formulas in the magical texts. The second part gives examples of the Fathers of the Eastern and the Western Church in their common criticism of magic. The third part examines differences in the understanding of dogmatic formulas between Christianity and magic. Finally, conclusions of ecumenical character are formulated.
