Opis:
Palaemon elegans, a new component of the Gulf of Gdańsk macrozoobenthos, colonised the southern Baltic coastal zone in the late 20th and early 21st century. Analysis of the stomach contents of P. elegans revealed 16 plant and animal taxa that these prawns had fed on. The principal dietary component was detritus, with a mean frequency of occurrence in stomachs of > 80%. The most frequently occurring plant components in the diet were algae from the genus Cladophora and the family Ectocarpaceae, while the most significant animal components were Harpacticoida, Chironomidae, Ostracoda and Gammarus spp. The results of the study show that the dietary composition of P. elegans differed significantly between stations and months. The foraging area consisted of two distinctive regions – the Inner Puck Bay, and the Outer Puck Bay together with the Dead Vistula River; two of the stations – Gdynia and Sopot – were distinct from all the others. However, no obvious seasonality in the food composition could be demonstrated.

In the summer of 2008–2009 species composition and quantity of macrozoobenthos in deposits samples collected with Ekman gripping device at 4 points of Starzyc Lake was studied. Lake Starzyc also called Chociwel is located in West Pomeranian Voivodeship and is adjacent to the town of Chociwel from South and South East of the city. In the collected material of the analysed lake macrozoobenthos organisms from the following classes were found: Oligochaeta, Hirudinea, Crustacea, Insecta and Bivalvia. The Insecta class was the most numerous one in respect of species found, including larvae of the following orders: Ephemeroptera (Leptophlebia sp., Ephemera sp., Caenis macrura (Stephens)), Trichoptera (Limnephilidae, Leptoceridae, Cyrnus sp.) Diptera and Megaloptera (Sialis lutaria L.). The density and biomass distribution in the analysed Starzyc Lake demonstrates the occurrence of unfavourable changes which may lead to eutrophication in the shallowest layers of the body reservoir and in the zone at the depth of 4.9 m. The littoral zone of the studied lake features high density and significant benthic fauna biomass with low values of PIE biodiversity index.

Opis:
This study was designed to investigate seasonal and annual changes in the benthic macrofauna in relation to changes in hydrogen sulphide concentration in the sediment and the oxygen content in the water column. Data were collected over a three-year period from 1994 to 1997. The benthic macrofauna inhabiting the sediments of the Gulf of Gdańsk, in which H2S is permanently present, consists mostly of species with a high tolerance to oxygen deficiency and the presence of H2S. These species are: Macoma balthica, Harmothoe sarsi, Nereis diversicolor, Saduria entomon and Halicryptus spinulosus, as well as Pontoporeia femorata and Corophium volutator, which are more sensitive to these factors. In 1996–1997 a decline in the abundance of almost all benthic species, and especially of the bivalve M. balthica at all the stations was observed in comparison to 1994–1995.

Opis:
A population of Mya arenaria was studied in the Polish coastal zone (up to 3 nautical miles) of the Baltic Sea in the open coast of Polish Middle Pomerania. Abundance, wet biomass, and the frequency of Mya were determined in the coastal waters, including estuaries of the Parseta, Wieprza, Słupia, Łupawa, and Łeba rivers and Władysławowo. The frequency (F) of Mya in the open coast of the Middle Pomerania amounted to 19.5%. The abundance of Mya, in the coastal zone surveyed, ranged from 0 to 265 specimens per m2 of the bottom (x¯ = 10.4 spec. m–2). Wet biomass of this bivalve ranged from 0 to 25.52 gww m-2 (x¯ = 1.56 gww m-2). Apparently Mya arenaria has found better conditions for living and development in the central of the Middle Pomerania coast. The abundance of this mollusc in the estuary of Słupia (Ustka) was 100-fold higher than in the estuary of Wieprza (Darłowo) and Łupawa (Rowy) and the wet weight was 11-fold higher, respectively. Mya arenaria plays an important role in the monitoring of benthos of the Baltic Sea, constitutes a food base of animals (fish), and takes part in the process of purification of waters of the coast stretch studied (biofiltration, biosedimentation).
Badano populacje małża Macoma balthica w polskiej strefie przybrzeżnej Bałtyku (do 3 Mm) w otwartym wybrzeżu Pomorza Środkowego (Middle Pomeranian).

Opis:
This study presents a quantitative approach to mapping benthophagous fish feeding grounds. This approach combines the spatial biomass distribution of benthic prey items and their importance for the diets of predators. A point based biomass data of macrozoobenthos together with a set of environmental factors was used to develop Random Forests models that produce continuous biomass distribution layers for individual prey species. Depending on the diet composition and the importance of prey for fish feeding, these layers are overlaid and an integrated GIS map of the seabed showing the quality of feeding grounds is generated. These maps provide a useful basis for conservation and marine spatial planning. In addition, this method could be applied to the mapping of resources used by other benthophagous organisms. The method is presented using the example of three common Baltic fish species: cod, flounder and viviparous eelpout.

Opis:
This study aims to prove the type and abundance of macrozoobenthos are affected by the physico-chemical condition of the habitat so that it can be used as a bioindicator in assessing river water quality with a case study in the Upstream of Citarum River. The method used in this study consists of two stages, namely determining the status of river quality with pollution index and determining the components to see the relationship of the water quality parameters to the abundance of macrozoobenthos with principal component analysis. On the basis of these studies, the results were that at the location of the study status of the river quality is slightly polluted and mildly polluted. For the slightly polluted status Corbicula sp. was used as the dominant macrozoobenthos parameter with the parameters of dissolved oxygen, organic carbon and N-O in the clay-dominated sediments. In turn, for the river areas with mild pollution, Enallagma sp., Tubifex sp., and Chironomous sp. were used as bioindicators and they have a relationship with the parameters of nitrate, TSS, and P-total.

The present qualitative and quantitative study on macrozoobenthos was conducted in 1998 in the coastal zone of the Baltic Sea adjacent to the Słowinski National Park (SNP). The macrozoobenthos of this zone exhibited quantitative scarcity (12 species) and low content of the wet mass. More frequent were only Oligochaeta, Pygospio elegans, and Batyporeia pilosa. Because of a better specific diversity, density, and wet mass of the macrozoobenthos in the zone outside 1 nautical mile limit, the author suggests widening the proposed marine protected zone of the SNP giving it the status of marine Landscape Park up to 3 nautical miles.

The purpose of the study undertaken between May 2018 and April 2019 is to determine the effect of rain water intensity on the value of macrozoobenthos structures in Ciletuh Bay. The data used in this research and directly taken from the research site are seawater quality parameters, analysis of sample granulometry and identification of the sample macrzoobenthos, while all data processing was conducted in the laboratory. The method used in this study was purposive sampling. The result of this research in sand type sediment texture brought a count of 96 macrozoobenthos individuals. In contrast, the count was only 7 in silt type sediments. The study concluded that the effect of varied rainfall intensity impacts the water quality parameters that caused the difference types of sediment in Ciletuh Bay.

The study results presented include an analysis of the biological material and benthic sediments collected in 2007 from four streams located in the Oder River basin. These served as the basis for determining the taxonomic structure and biomass of macrobenthos at the sampling sites as well as of the water quality based on the Biological Monitoring Working Party index adapted for Poland (BMWP-PL). The streams studied varied with regard to the qualitative and quantitative structures of individual taxa, and the biodiversity in the streams was very high. Insecta was the dominant in terms of numbers in all of the streams studied, and among them Trichoptera was the most frequently occurring group of organisms. The macrozoobenthos biomass values from 66 to 252 g m–2 might indicate that the biological capabilities of these streams are high. The BMWP-PL index evaluation system indicates that the studied streams can, in most instances, be classified as either marginally polluted or polluted (water quality classes III and IV).
Przedstawione wyniki badań obejmują analizę materiału biologicznego i osadów dennych uzyskanych z czterech cieków dorzecza Odry prowadzonych w 2007 r. System oceny indeksu BMWP-PL wskazuje, że badane rzeki można zaliczyć w większości przypadków do wód słabo zanieczyszczonych i zanieczyszczonych (III i IV klasa).
