Opis:
The paper presents results of analysis how sea waves affect variation of angular speed of a propulsion shaft of the ship during sea passage. That information is necessary to evaluate the level of credibility of measurements taken as reference value for detection of main engine combustion failures and evaluation of cylinders’ contribution to total power based on shaft’s angular speed irregularity observations. Utilization of IAS (Instantaneous Angular Speed) for diagnostic purposes is mostly based on comparison of actual state measurement with characteristics taken during healthy engine run in certain outer conditions. All variations of atmospheric pressure and air temperature have noticeable impact at instantaneous value of angular speed, they and must be considered during comparison procedure. For marine propulsion set, two weather deriving factors, having impact at angular speed of the shaft, can occur. First one is mentioned above values of air temperature and air pressure, the second one is torque variations caused by changes of propeller’s draught due to pitch of the hull. Any deviations from sampling course of angular speed are treated as malfunction symptoms. The aim of analysis was to evaluate how pitching frequency affect run of IAS and how whether omitting of that impact can lead to wrong conclusions.

Opis:
The use of gas/LNG to supply marine engines in addition to tangible economic benefits is also a method of limiting emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere and meeting strict environmental protection regulations, especially in special areas. The technology of supplying liquid and gas fuels (Dual Fuel) is most easily used in four-stroke engines but the highest thermal efficiency is ensured by combustion two-stroke piston engines. However, in the first two-stroke dualfuel engines, the gas supply installation was more complicated than in the four-stroke engine. It resulted, among others from the necessity of compressing the gas to high pressures (15÷30 MPa), for which extremely energyconsuming multi-stage compression systems were needed. The complicated technical system is inherently prone to failures, which is why the dual-fuel low-speed two-stroke diesel engines remained for a long period in the design and experimental phase. In recent years, there has been a significant breakthrough thanks to the introduction of new solutions with the possibility of supplying two-stroke engines with low-pressure gas (less than 1.6 MPa). In recent years, many ships powered by two-stroke, dual-fuel internal combustion engines were commissioned. Some shipowners owning a fleet of LNG carriers with two-stroke diesel engines that so far have been powered only by liquid fuels have decided to adapt them to gas combustion. This required the adaptation of the engine for gas combustion and the expansion of the supply gas fuel system. This paper is an attempt to analyse the legitimacy of introducing two-stroke, dual-fuel internal combustion engines into the propulsion system and adaptation of engines that are already used to burn gas in them. It presents the changes introduced on one of the LNG gas carriers consisting in adapting the engine to gas combustion through modification of the cylinder head and fuel supply installation. Parameter results of the modified engines obtained during sea trials have been presented. Both advantages and disadvantages resulting from gas combustion have been pointed out. Finally, the possibility of this solution application to other LNG carriers was assessed.

Although direct measurements of the fuel injection pressure and the travel of the injector needle in conjunction with measurements of the valve train mechanism timing can provide complete diagnostic information about the technical conditions of the fuel injection and valve train systems, this requires the installation of sensors and other equipment directly into the systems, which is possible within research laboratories but is generally forbidden during operation of the ship. Malfunctions in the fuel injection and valve train systems can also be identified from the indicator diagrams of an engine operating cycle, expressed as P(V) and P(deg) diagrams. The basic parameters of the engine operating cycle, such as the maximum combustion pressure Pmax, compression pressure Pcompr, and indicated mean effective pressure IMEP, can also be used to indicate deviations from proper engine operation. Using a combination of a vibration sensor with an in-cylinder gas pressure sensor widens the capabilities of diagnostics for marine diesel engines under operational conditions. A vibration sensor with a magnetic base can help in determining the timings of the lifting and landing of the injector needle, fuel delivery by the fuel injection pump, opening and closing of the circulation of heated heavy fuel oil, and opening and closing of the gas distribution valves. This also offers a promising solution for diagnostics of the cylinder lubrication oil injectors. The proposed approach allows valuable information to be received during engine operation in accordance with the principle of non-destructive control, and can help in early detection of possible engine malfunctions.

Existing and future regulations on ship energy efficiency and methods for their improvement are presented in this work. The design and operational features of gas-fuelled low-speed main engines, liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification conditions, and amount of waste cold are compared. Using a simple linear regression model based on the least squares method, formulae were developed to predict the amount of waste cold as a function of the brake power of gas-fuelled low-speed main engines operating under ISO ambient conditions in Tier III-compliant mode. A sufficiently accurate prediction of the waste cold amount at the initial design stage is feasible due to the formulae developed as part of this work

Opis:
Two-stroke, low-speed diesel engines are widely used in large ships due to their good performance and fuel economy. However, there have been few studies of the effects of lubricating oils on the vibration of two-stroke, low-speed diesel engines. In this work, the effects of three different lubricating oils on the vibration characteristics of a low-speed engine are investigated, using the frequency domain, time-frequency domain, fast Fourier transform (FFT) and short-time Fourier transform (STFT) methods. The results show that non-invasive condition monitoring of the wear to a cylinder liner in a low-speed marine engine can be successfully achieved based on vibration signals. Both the FFT and STFT methods are capable of capturing information about combustion in the cylinder online in real time, and the STFT method also provides the ability to visualise the results with more comprehensive information. From the online condition monitoring of vibration signals, cylinder lubricants with medium viscosity and medium alkali content are found to have the best wear protection properties. This result is consistent with those of an elemental analysis of cylinder lubrication properties and an analysis of the data measured from a piston lifted from the cylinder after 300 h of engine operation.

Opis:
Due to environmental, energy, and operating cost constraints, the number of liquefied natural gas (LNG)–powered ships is increasing. To avoid decreasing the thermal efficiency of two-stroke, low-speed diesel engines, high-pressure gas injection is used. The specific energy consumption of a gas fuel compressor is around 0.35 kWh/kg, which has a negative impact on the efficiency of ship power plants. To reduce the primary energy consumption of a gas fuel supply system, waste heat recovery (WHR) technologies may be used. This study investigated whether WHR metal hydride technology was suitable for improving the efficiency of low-grade heat waste in marine diesel engines. The key factors of this technology were revealed, and the design scheme was described. Working fluids were also analyzed, and a mathematical model of a WHR metal hydride plant was developed, and the results were represented. The calculations showed that the above technology could increase the operating power of a propulsion plant by 5.7–6.2%. The results demonstrate the possibility of applying WHR metal hydride equipment for gas fuel compressor drives in LNG-powered ships. The novelty of this study lies in the investigation of metal hydride technology for application in the waste heat recovery systems of LNG-powered ships.

It is well known that the most effective method of air distribution in high-heat areas is displacement ventilation with a variable air loss according to changeable operating conditions. Dense equipment arrangement makes requirements to air distribution even higher. The necessity of spreading jets till they reach convective flows is shown. To slow down these jets uniform air supply is required at the exit of an air distributor. Modern devices do not fully meet this requirement. The suggested method of air supply ensures uniform air distribution and thorough ventilation of the area at a changed expenditure of inflowing air.
Wiadomo, że najbardziej skutecznym sposobem nawiewu powietrza do pomieszczeń ze źródłami ciepła jest wentylacja wyciągowa ze zmiennym przepływem powietrza w zmiennych warunkach eksploatacyjnych. Zwiększanie szczelności pomieszczeń podwyższa wymagania do nawiewu powietrza.

Hyperloop is a new concept of transport system the main assumption of which is to use hermetic tunnels where air pressure is very low compared to atmospheric pressure. It enables significant reduction of traffic resistance and, as a result, energy consumption. One of the most important elements of this system is land infrastructure with transport tubes. This system component has a significant impact on the construction costs related to the whole system and affects its functional parameters (e.g. capsule travel speed). Appropriate configuration of the route of a new transport system will require the use of all possible ways of leading transport tubes, including tunneling. The paper presents the key premises that prove a large potential application of tunnel technologies in the development of a new transport system.

Opis:
Due to the innovation of transport means based on hyperloop technology, the correctness of its functioning should be investigated in relation to many technical, economic and operational factors. This paper presents an analysis of the hyperloop technology from the point of view of ensuring safety of passengers while travelling in a low-pressure rail tunnel. The main subject of research was the design of hyperloop station infrastructure and the safety management system that will ensure the safety of passengers at the station in the sphere of atmospheric pressure, despite the station’s interaction with low-pressure tubes during entry and exit of the capsules. The safety management system also includes evacuation of passengers from low-pressure tubes in an emergency situation. The paper reviews the key issues of passenger safety in the hyperloop transport system, which are the source of justified and unfounded people’ fear of using this transport means despite its obvious advantages. The authors’ original achievement is the identification of critical points of passenger safety during their stay in the station area and during their journey through a low-pressure tunnel, as well as the design of a double airlock that can be used in the hyperloop tunnel at repeatable intervals with the aim of evacuating passengers to the atmospheric pressure zone. The designed solution allows to eliminate one of the significant weaknesses of the transport system using low-pressure rail.

A new covering technology for producing covered yarns is proposed in this article. On a traditional yarn covering machine, a hollow spindle rotates with a bobbin of the outer wrapping yarn. In the new equipment, the turntable rotates with only one single outer wrapping yarn. With a magnetic device, the bobbin of core yarns is suspended in a balloon formed by outer wrapping yarns. The rotation speed of the turntable can reach 40000 rpm. A series of experiments on the new equipment were conducted and some covered yarn samples were obtained. The performance of these samples were tested and compared with that produced by traditional machines.

Opis:
This paper presents a new high-swing, high-speed and low power continuous-time Common-Mode Feedback Block (CMFB) based on rail-to-rail technique. The main purposes of the proposed idea are to achieve high-speed, low settling time error, large output swing, and low power as well. Moreover, applying the worst case simulation (initial condition 0 and 1.8 volts) on the proposed CMFB circuit, the output voltage can be settled in the desired level just after 1.18ns noticeably. The settling time error and the power consumption of the suggested common-mode feedback circuit are just 103|iV and 187µW with the power supply of 1.8 volts respectively. Meanwhile, DC gain and phase margin of the amplifier are 74dB and 67 degree correspondingly, and 0.5pF capacitor load is applied to the output nodes of the amplifier. It is noteworthy that, the proposed idea is a good candidate for low voltage applications too. Because it just needs 2 overdrive voltage (AV) to start its performance. Applying the proposed idea on the folded cascode amplifier it achieves SNDR of 68.68dB with the Effective Number of Bits (ENOB) 11.15 bits respectively. The proposed CMFB occupies an active area of 155.58µm2 (10.56µm*14.73µm). Finally, the proposed structure is simulated in whole process corner condition and different temperatures from -70°C to +70°C. Simulation results are performed using the HSPICE BSIM3 model of a 0.18µm CMOS technology.
