Opis:
In view of the extremely important role of wetlands, an attempt was made to determine the state of preservation of peat forming processes as a condition for the proper functioning of those areas. By addressing this question, we hoped to determine whether the peat bogs and mires of the Łęczna-Włodawa Plain currently act as carbon sources. The aim of the present study was to compare the ash content and the contents of selected macroand micronutrients in the deposits. The research was carried out in the years 2010-2013 and covered eight peatland areas (three midfield and five mid-forest peatlands). The ash content, as well as the content of biogens, and selected macro- and micronutrients of the studied deposits varied and depended on the type of the deposit forming a given layer. In all the studied deposits, the carbon content was high, especially in the transitional Sedge-Sphagnum peat and the raised pine peat. The marsh layers, in relation to the studied peat minerals and gyttja, were characterized by a lower carbon content, and the restriction of C:N and N:P ratios. In all the studied peat bogs, located in the Łęczna-Włodawa Plain, the accumulation phase dominated, so they do not act as carbon suppliers.

Opis:
A brief review of the evolution of denudation research since the 1960s is followed by a review of specific sediment yield variability in mountainous regions of the world as a function of spatial scale, relief, glaciation, lithology and disturbance type and location within the basin. A general model of scalar relations of suspended sediment yield for Canadian regions warns against comparing data from basins with areas ranging over several orders of magnitude. A regional summary of specific sediment yield in mountainous British Columbia confirms that in basins <1 km2 and >30,000 km2 specific sediment yield decreases with basin size whereas in basins of intermediate size (between 1 km˛ and 30,000 km˛) specific sediment yield increases with basin size. This effect is interpreted in terms of three distinct process zones in every mountain basin. These zones can be characterized as a) generally degrading hillslope zones, b) generally aggrading footslopes and valley sides, and c) channelized flows on valley floors demonstrating either net aggradation or degradation. These are identifiable repeating elements in such landscapes. Suspended sediment yield data from mountainous regions around the world are considered in light of the British Columbia model. Some support for the model is found where basins are stratified according to scale, relief, lithology, disturbance types, and location within each basin. Disturbance types include the presence of glaciers, land use activities of various kinds, such as increasing population pressure in the intertropical montane zone, changing population distribution and associated economic activities in the temperate montane zone, and potentially hydroclimate change.

The stronghold in Grzybowo (Rabieżyce village) near Września is a remnant of medieval ring-fort. It is investigated to a considerably lower degree than similar objects from Greater Poland. The analysis of archival data shows that the stronghold is located on the edge of the flood plain of the Struga River formed by Holocene sediments, cutting into the moraine plateau. Analysis of sediments in the stronghold vicinity revealed interlayers of organic matter and sandy deposits rich in calcium carbonate with variable grain size composition, particularly west of the stronghold (i.e. in the valley floor). Moreover, radiocarbon data set showed a considerably older than Holocene age of the sediment. The analysis of the course of the contemporary river channel also allowed for stating hypotheses regarding a potentially different course of the former Struga River channel and its changes during the development of the stronghold. These assumptions were based on the analysis of the archaeological archival data, where field drawings suggest the existence of such a channel in the territory of the stronghold.

The Niestachów profile is located in the southwestern part of the Holy Cross Mountains and exposes lower Ludlovian greywacke sediments of the Niewachlów Beds that occur above graptolitic claystones of the Prągowiec Beds. Within the sequence of lithologically diversified Niewachlów Beds, more than 400 m thick, 11 characteristic lithologic complexes were identified. The lower and upper parts of the Niewachlów Beds comprise fine- and medium-grained greywacke sandstones with mudstone interbeds, whereas the middle part contains coarse-grained greywacke sandstones and conglomerates. The sediments were transported by “turbiditic currents” from the southwest. Petrographic examination of the upper part of the Prągowiec Beds and the Niewachlów Beds indicates that the greywacke conglomerates and sandstones of the Niewachlów Beds are composed primarily of volcanic and sedimentary lithoclasts, with subordinate metamorphic and scarce plutonic lithoclasts. The sandstones and conglomerates were derived from an orogen containing sandstones and mudstones as well as from the magmatic rocks of a continental volcanic arc, characterized by acidic-intermediate volcanism.

The stratigraphy and lithology of the Quaternary deposits of the Kleczew region are analysed in a regional context. They can be correlated with the Preglacial, Narevian(?), South Polish, Middle Polish and Vistulian Glaciations, and the Podlasian, Zbójno and Eemian Interglacials. Large glaciotectonic structures, commonly encountered in lignite mines, proved useful in correlating grey tills of the older Pleistocene glaciations. Lithology, stratigraphy, thickness and palaeomorphology of the Pleistocene sediments were presented in the key sites Konin-Marantów, Mikorzyn, Sławoszewek and in 6 borehole sections. A regional lithostratigraphic scheme of the Quaternary in the eastern Wielkopolska Lowland was constructed basing on petrographic coefficients of tills, lithology, genesis and, finally, on hypsometric setting and thickness. In the light of these studies the maximum ice sheet unit of the Oldest Glaciation should be moved to the south from Kleczew. Moreover, tills of the Odranian, Wartanian and Vistulian Glaciations were found.

Multiproxy sedimentological, gamma-spectrometric, foraminiferal, calcareous nannoplankton, and otolith data were used for the reconstruction of the Badenian (Middle Miocene) history of the Moravian part of the Carpathian Foredeep. The study material originated from the new borehole LOM-1, which drilled >20 metres of monotonous clayey siltstones with exceptionally rich and well-preserved microfossil assemblages. Distal parts of the Carpathian Foredeep (a forebulge depozone) are exposed in this succession. Generally, a quiet environment of outer shelf to upper bathyal of monotonous clayey silts was interpreted, which is typical for the proximal parts of a peripheral foreland basin. The section studied can be subdivided into six intervals, confirming the cyclical character of Middle Miocene sedimentation in the Central Paratethys. Interannual oscillations of nutrient content, temperature and/or salinity are interpreted based on the oscillations of geochemical as well as palaeobiological data. The turnover connected with the initiation of the Middle Miocene Climatic Transition is recorded above the LO (last occurrence) of Helicosphaera waltrans in agreement with previous observations in the Carpathian Foredeep. The changes include cooling, a decrease in nutrients, a probable increase of the salinity of surface water, and increase of seasonality. Seasonality was manifested by an alternation of mixed and stratified water columns with a seasonal input of nutrients. Concerning nutrients, sources of seasonal riverine input or seasonal upwelling are both possible.

The mafic-ultramafic terrain of the Bhavani complex in southern India is considered for lithological mapping. The Landsat-8 OLI satellite data was used for the interpretation of different rock types in the study area. The satellite data were digitally processed using ENVI 5.6 image processing software. In the OLI data, excluding bands 8 and 9, the remaining seven bands were used for the generation of colour composite images, band ratios, principal component analysis and SVM classification. Reflectance spectral measurements were carried out in laboratory conditions for five rock samples collected from the study area. The XRF analysis was carried out to estimate the composition of major oxides present in the rock samples. The results obtained from XRF analysis were compared with the rock spectra in characterizing the spectral features of the rock types. The colour composite images (B543, B567, B456, and B457), PCA composite image (PC312 and PC456), band ratios (BR5/5 and BR4/3), colour composite images from band ratios, and SVM classified output are useful in delineation various rock types in the terrain.

With respect to the high uncertainties associated with methods of determining lithology and pore fluid using well logs, quantitative rock physics analyses was used to determine the lithology and pore fluid of a reservoir in the Niger Delta. Inaccurate prediction of lithology and pore fluid results in the inaccurate determination of other petrophysical properties and parameters such as porosity, permeability, net pay, etc. The primary objective of this research is to predict lithology and pore fluid using rock physics analysis. However, reservoir zones were also predicted. Density, compressional wave velocity and shear wave velocity logs were used as input to calculate elastic parameters such as velocity ratio, Poisson’s ratio and Bulk Modulus. The calculated velocity ratio log was used to differentiate between sand and shale. Poisson’s ratio and velocity ratio using the Goodway interpretation template was carried out and used to delineate pore fluid content; gas sand, oil sand and sandstone formation from cross-plot analysis.

The lacustrine-boggy-fluvial sequence at Komorniki, NE Poland was subject to complex (geological, palynological, diatomological and malacological) investigations. These sediments occur between the Narevian and Nidanian glaciations tills and belong to the Augustovian Interglacial of Poland correlated with the Cromerian 1 Interglacial of the Netherlands. Two cold stages of a glacial rank and one warm stage of interglacial rank (with dominant pollen of Quercus, Ulmus, Carpinus, Alnus, Tilia and Corylus in sediments corresponding to the climatic optimum) have been distinguished in the pollen succession. The latter is similar to that known from the Augustovian Interglacial profiles at Szczebra, Kalejty and Czarnucha. Diatom succession from the Komorniki section includes certain unidentified, apparently new small species of Stephanodiscus, Staurosirella and Pseudostaurosira side be side with the Pleistocene extinct taxon of Stephanodiscus niagarae var. insuetus and a relatively widespread species of S. rotula characterizing by some morphological peculiarities. In the composition of the malacofauna the fluvial extinct species of Fagotia wuesti and Sphaerium cf. rivicola are the most important molluscs for the biostratigraphy. Among them, Sphaerium cf. rivicola is known from the late Tiglian in the Netherlands. Fagotia wuesti is characteristic of the Bavel Interglacial in the Netherlands, as well as of the Borntal and Artern interglacials in Germany.

The paper presents results of a study of near-bottom currents, lithology and morphodynamics on the shore-zone of the Vistula Spit in Russia and on the western shore of the Sambian Peninsula. The measurements were conducted in 1991 and during the period of 2005-2009. The study involves the analysis of the synchronous and statistical parameters of the currents together with wind, grain-size and sorting coefficient distributions for the deposits of the beach and underwater slope, and also the analysis of the morphology and morphodynamics along the east coast of the Gulf of Gdańsk. It has been shown that under conditions of an acute angle between the seaward wind vector and the coastline the strongest and the most stable longshore currents are formed. An increase of the angle leads to a decrease of velocity and stability of these currents. Under conditions of the wind normal to the shore (90°) in the sector of the curved coast Yantarny - Baltiysk (west wind), convergence of the currents is observed. The assessments of annual capacities of the longshore sediment transport for the coastal segment at the Sambian Peninsula and the deformation volumes on the underwater slope at Baltiysk are summarized. A hypothesis is proposed that the sector of 5-15 km north of Baltiysk under the existing wind-wave conditions is the zone of convergence and the discharge-resulting sediment transport. The assumption of the prevalence of migratory and whirl circulations along the shore zone of Vistula Spit is put forward. It is noticed that entrance moles of Baltiysk considerably impact on parameters of the currents and flow of deposits along the coastline at the length of 3-4 km.

The litology of the Sandomierz section deposits have been examined, with SEM analysis performed on 4 quartz grain-size classes. All of the Sandomierz deposits contain predominant quartz grains with signs of aeolian transport. This refers both to morainic till and muds underlying the loess section as well to loesses them selves along with soil complexes. A much smaller, although significant contribution comprises redeposited grains with features of a high energy beach environment. Their content in creases up section. During sedimentation of the LMg (younger upper loess) deposits (later part of the Vistulian Glaciation) wind strength was in creasing. This is indicated by the upwards increasing content of coarser fractions within the interval, with simultaneously improved sorting, as well as by the increased contribution of garnets and the greater content of zircon and rutile at the top. The increasing contribution of aeolian quartz grains, the considerable content of grains redeposited from a beach environment and the decreasing amount of post-sedimentary features all suggest increased wind speed. Low variability in the shape of the 1–0.5 mm quartz grains from the LMg horizon indicates short transport and a similar nearby source of material. Alimentary areas for this horizon were composed of young Pleistocene muds and tills. A change in depositional conditions is observed at the LMs/LMg boundary (upper part of the Vistulian Glaciation). During deposition of the LMs (younger middle loess) horizon, wind strength decreased, as shown by the content of heavy minerals and the smaller mean grain-size along with the reduced content of aeolized quartz grains.

Natural radioactivity of coastal sediments could provide interesting information on sediment dynamics. Natural radioactivity measurements were performed in two areas of the Adriatic Sea littoral of Albanian cost, in the gulfs of Durres and Vlora, where complex studies were carried out in the framework of the maintenance of existing Durres harbour and the design of a new harbour in Vlora. Dynamic mapping of the gamma total radioactivity at the sea bottom sediment was carried out using a 2" × 2" NaI probe. Radiometric data were converted to lithological map, and the sand and silt distribution configuration was interpreted in terms of sediment transport. The obtained results have shown that the natural radioactivity of sediments provides qualitative data about the sediment dynamics. This cost-effective method is recommended to be used as complementary to other tracer techniques for sediment transport in coastal engineering investigations.

A gradual transition from sandy through silty to clayey strata occurs near the Ordovician–Silurian (O/S) boundary in the southern part of Holy Cross Mountains, in the Bardo Syncline. Three graptolite biozones are distinguished for the O/S boundary interval deposits: ?persculptus, ascensus-acuminatus and vesiculosus. The first, rare graptolites appear below “graptolitic shales” in the ?persculptus Biozone. The diversity of the assemblage increases in the next two biozones. An analysis of acritarch frequency shows a decrease of acritarch frequency at the O/S boundary and then a gradual increase in the lower part of the ascensus-acuminatus biozone with a maximum in the vesiculosus Biozone. The taxonomic diversity of the acritarch assemblage shows a similar trend although the maximum of acritarch frequency observed in the vesiculosus Biozone do not coincide the maximum of acritarch taxonomic diversity.
