Opis:
Listening tests have been carried out to quantify the significance of binaural auralization over monaural auralization in accordance with the acoustic properties of the enclosure. To this end, acoustic rendering of three different rooms were generated based on synthesized monaural (two channels with the same audio material) and binaural room impulse responses. The auralizations were evaluated by means of subjective tests using headphones with non-individualized equalization. Parameters, such as localization, spatial impression and realism, were taken into consideration to determine the relevance of providing binaural information for the auralization of a given room. The analysis of the data has been conducted following a statistical approach based on ANOVA and Pearson correlation. The results indicate that spatial perception is strongly dependent on the acoustic characteristics of the rooms and on the listening condition of the audio material. Furthermore, as expected, advantages of binaural rendering in terms of source localization was also confirmed.

Opis:
The aim of the study was an evaluation of different pattern of auditory processing lateralization in musicians and non-musicians. 41 people aged 20-46 participated in the experiment, from which two research groups were selected: musicians ‒ instrumentalists professionally active (N: 21) and non-musicians (N: 20). All of them were right-handed. The dichotic listening test (Kurkowski 2007) was used to assess the laterality of external stimuli. The examination showed the superiority of right-ear perception or binaural speech processing. In the study of non-focused attention, musicians achieved a similar rate of correct responses for the left and right ear, which indicates binaural processing, where they gave more correct responses for the left ear and fewer correct responses for the right ear than non-musicians. The difference between the groups is statistically significant. In the study focused on the right ear, both groups obtained similar high scores. In the left-ear study the musicians gave more correct responses from the perception of stimuli to the left ear than non-musicians. This research confirmed different pattern of auditory processing lateralization in musicians and non-musicians. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Opis:
Many studies have so far tried to examine the relationship between listening strategies and listening comprehension. However, it seems that none of them have focused on the effect of the test method on the findings. The present study has investigated the issue by having 55 English language learners respond to pictorial and non-pictorial listening test items with different response formats. The listening section of the Preliminary English Test (PET) and a 36-item listening strategies questionnaire were administered in the first session and after a week’s interval, the participants took a modified version of PET listening. The data were collected in a language laboratory. Several correlation and regression tests were run to investigate the relationships between listening comprehension as measured by the original and modified PET listening tests and metacognitive, cognitive and socio-affective listening strategies. The results showed that L2 learners’ use of metacognitive listening strategies is the strongest predictor of listening performance. In addition, the findings indicated that the relationship between the use of listening strategies and listening performance is mediated by the kind of test method which is used for measuring L2 listening. Directions for future research and implications for practice are presented.

Opis:
The multi-stimulus test with hidden reference and anchors (MUSHRA) is commonly used for subjective quality assessment of audio systems. Despite its wide acceptance in scientific and industrial sectors, the method is not free from bias. One possible source of bias in the MUSHRA method may be attributed to a graphical design of its user interface. This paper examines the hypothesis that replacement of the standard multi-slider layout with a single-slider version could reduce a stimulus spacing bias observed in the MUSHRA test. Contrary to the expectation, the aforementioned modification did not reduce the bias. This outcome formally supports the validity of using multiple sliders in the MUSHRA graphical interface.
