The paper presents experimental investigation on air-water-oil three-phase mixture upflow in a vertical pipe. The aim of this study was to identify flow patterns. The conductometric method was applied in flow patterns typing. This method is based on the measurement of electrical conductivity of gas-liquid-liquid mixture. The results show that the measurement of electrical conductivity can be a valuable tool to identify gas-liquid-liquid three- phase flow patterns. The paper contains theoretical description of the method and analysis of the results.
Przedstawiono wyniki badań eksperymentalnych nad wznoszącym przepływem mieszaniny trójfazowej powietrze-woda-olej w mrze mających na celu rozpoznanie tworzących się struktur takiego przepływu. Do typowania pojawiających się struktur przepływu zastosowano metodę konduktometryczną opartą na pomiarze przewodności elektrycznej układu gaz-ciecz-ciecz. Przeprowadzone badania dowiodły, że pomiar przewodności elektrycznej może stanowić istotne narzędzie do identyfikacji struktur przepływu trójfazowego gaz-ciecz-ciecz. Praca zawiera teoretyczny opis metody badawczej oraz analizę wyników pomiarów.

The results of modelling of the two-phase turbulent flow of a two-phase, liquid-liquid mixture in a Kenics static mixer were reported. Advanced transient simulations were performed using the large eddy simulation (LES) approach and a broader analysis of the velocity field was carried out. The two-phase flow was modelled employing the Eulerian approach in the pseudo-homogeneous version of the mixture model. Three cases were again considered, which differed by the density of the two phases and the simulations were performed for Reynolds number of 10,000. The LES results for the tangential and radial components were compared with those obtained in the steady-state RANS approach.

The paper presents results of numerical calculations conducted in order to define the heat transfer coefficient in flow boiling in a vertical minichannel with one side made of a heating foil with liquid crystals. During the experiment, we measured the local temperature of the foil, inlet and outlet liquid temperature and pressure, current and voltage drop of the electric power supplied to the heater. Local measurements of foil temperature were approximated with a linear combination of the Trefftz functions. The known temperature measurement errors allowed application of the adjustment calculus. The foil temperature distribution was determined by the FEM combined with the Trefftz functions. Local heat transfer coefficients between the foil and the boiling fluid were calculated from the third-kind condition.
Przedstawiono wyniki obliczeń numerycznych przeprowadzonych w celu określenia współczynnika przejmowania ciepła przy przepływie wrzącej cieczy w pionowym minikanale, którego jedna ściana wykonana jest z folii grzewczej pokrytej ciekłymi kryształami. Podczas eksperymentu mierzono: lokalną temperaturę folii, temperaturę cieczy na wlocie i wylocie z minikanału, ciśnienie cieczy w minikanale oraz spadek natężenia i napięcia prądu stałego dostarczanej do folii grzewczej. Lokalne pomiary temperatury folii aproksymowano kombinacją liniową funkcji Trefftza. Znane błędy pomiaru temperatury pozwoliły na stosowanie rachunku wyrównawczego. Rozkład temperatury folii został określony przy zastosowaniu MES w powiązaniu z funkcjami Trefftza. Lokalne współczynniki wymiany ciepła pomiędzy folią i wrzącym płynem zostały wyliczone z warunku trzeciego rodzaju.

The main aim of this research was to determine in three ways, i.e. experimentally, analytically and by means of numerical modelling, the resistances of the flow of a natural liquid in a helical pipe and in curved pipes. The analyses were carried out for three pipes: one helical pipe and two curved pipes. Each of the pipes was 2 m long and its inside diameter was 4 mm. The experiment was carried out on a test stand making it possible to measure the rate of the flow of the liquid, the temperature at the pipe’s inlet and outlet and the pressure at the pipe’s inlet and outlet. The resistances of the flow of the liquid were calculated from analytical or empirical formulas found in the literature on the subject. Moreover, numerical modelling was performed using the finite volume element method.

Arid and semi-arid areas are characterised by differentiation in meteorological conditions. Sometimes the rains are rare and not very intense and at other times they are dense and very intense, resulting in torrents that often lead to strong soil erosion. Most of the time, the losses occur at the solids level because the erosion effect is too high. In this study, we want to evaluate the transfer of solid sediments as a function of liquid transport in the basin of Wadi Zeddine at Ain Defla in Algeria. To understand this phenomenon, we used the data of liquid flows (Ql, m3∙s-1) and concentration of suspended sediments (C, g∙dm-3), transported in the river, the data collected by the NWRA (National Water Resources Agency), over 24 years have been used to find a relationship between these two quantities, to estimate the quantity of solid transport Qs (kg∙s-1) in the watercourse of the catchment area studied. The results obtained show a good correlation between solid and liquid flows, with a correlation coefficient estimated at 90%, and the average annual sediment supply recorded at the outlet of the Wadi Zeddine watershed is estimated at around 88,048 Mg, which corresponds to 202 Mg∙km-2∙y-1 erosion rate. This value is comparable to those found in other regions with similar hydrological regimes.

One of the most important aspects in natural gas exploitation, which must be constantly monitored, is the liquid impurities loading in gas wells, mostly in depleted reservoirs. The extension of this phenomenon is observed, as the natural gas reservoirs are depleted, thus substantially reduction of the reservoir pressure. The increasing quantity of liquid impurities is a major problem in gas depleted reservoirs exploitation, which could not be naturally removed in energetical depletion conditions. In this period, to avoid liquids acumulation and afterwards flooding, wells must produce with a minimum flow, named critical flow, under whose value is not possible the unloading of accumulated liquids. Wells can produce without liquid accumulations if in the tubing is obtained a gas flow velocity, greater than the liquid drop free dowfall speed limit. The velocity and critical flow depend on bottom hole or surface dynamie pressure, flow section diameter, liquid and gas density, water superficial strength. Liquid flow inerease during gas depleted reservoir exploitation, but only a part of this quantity is naturally unloaded by gas stream, the other part tend to accumulate to the bottom hole. In this conditions, the dynamie bottom hole pressure will inerease continuosly, causing continuous dropping and pronounced gas flow rate, until the well floods and stops producing. Early recognition of signs that indicates well liquid loading and the most suitable lifting system selection can eliminate problems before the production drops and layers damage.

The nature and properties of liquid solutions - metallurgical slags (used in the pig iron and steel production) affect the quality of the final product and processing time. The main object of the study was slag system: CaO-SiO2-MgO-Al2O3, when the content of Al2O3 was raised to ca. 25% in liquid and semi-liquid state. Measurements were performed using Searle’s method of concentric cylinder systems. Graphite measuring systems were used for testing with two types of bobs: smooth and perforated. Rheological measurements were carried out for five slag systems in the temperature range between 1310-1500°C, shear rate values were changed in the wide range between 1s-1 to 150/180s-1. FactSage application was used to calculate the mass of solid phases precipitating from the slag volume for different chemical compositions at various temperatures. In the temperature range in which the solid phases occurred in the slag the analysed systems show non-Newtonian behaviour.
Charakter oraz właściwości ciekłych żużli metalurgicznych (wykorzystywanych w procesach wielkopiecowym oraz stalowniczym) wpływa na jakość produktu oraz na czas prowadzonego procesu. W niniejszej pracy analizowano żużle typu CaO-SiO2-MgO-Al2O3. domieszkowane do ok. 25% Al2O3, w stanie ciekłym oraz stało-ciekłym. Badania zostały wykonane przy użyciu rotacyjnej metody z koncentrycznymi cylindrami typu Searle’a. Narzędzia pomiarowe wykonano z grafitu, charakteryzowały się one gładkimi oraz perforowanymi powierzchniami. Badania reologiczne wykonano dla pięciu systemów żużlowych w temperaturach 1310-1500°C. Prędkość ścinania w trakcie pomiarów zmieniana była od ls-1 do 150/180s. -1 Pakiet FactSage został wykorzystany do obliczenia masy fazy stałej, wytrącającej się z objętości żużla, dla różnych składów chemicznych, w różnych temperaturach. W temperaturach, w których zaobserwowano występowanie fazy stałej charakter reologiczny badanych układów żużlowych odbiegał od zachowania ciała idealnego Newtona.

The paper presents results of experimental investigation of microchannel boiling flow which was controlled by dielectrophoretic (DEP) restrictor. The DEP restrictor was connected to the microchannel liquid supply tube. Operation of DEP restrictor influenced the flow rate at the microchannel inlet. Resulting changes in flow structures and vapour content along the microchannel were observed and analysed with a high-speed video camera. Video recordings were synchronised with measurements of differential pressure between the channel inlet and outlet. It was found that it is possible to change average void fraction in the microchannel by switching on and off the voltage applied to the restrictor electrodes. However, to achieve significant variation of the void fraction, applied voltage should be of the order of 2000 Vpp. The voltage switching also generates oscillations of the differential pressure. The amplitude of these oscillations is proportional to the voltage magnitude, reaching 35 Pa for 2400 Vpp.

There is a number of mathematical models applied to simulate the migration of oil-derived pollution, with the LNAPL (Light non-aqueous phase liquid) volumes in the saturation and aeration zones being analysed in two-phase modeling. A number of hydrogeological parameters and the parameters describing the second phase consisting of oil derivatives are assumed for the sake of the simulation. A part of the data predetermined for the mathematical model is applied on the basis of direct investigations in the field or laboratory, whereas some data are based on a literature analysis or are used by analogy to similar areas. The model data should be additionally verified and validated in the mathematical model. In the case of the LNAPL remediation system being simulated, it is the parameters related to the ground-water environment and the parameters defining the free product of oil that are very important in determining the volume of the recovered LNAPL. With a good deal of data applied for the remediation process simulation one may expect model solutions of different levels of reliability.

This paper presents a high-speed, multiple-transducers, pulse-echo ultrasonic technique for the measurement of interfacial parameters of horizontal two-phase intermittent flow regimes. The ultrasonic system consisted of an ultrasonic driver, a multiplexer with 4 transducers, and a microcomputer equipped with a data acquisition card, a motion controller card and the Winspect Data Acquisition software. Two transducers were mounted on the top of a 2.1 cm inner diameter circular pipe, while the other two transducers were mounted on the bottom of the pipe. Using instantaneous liquid level measurements from multiple transducers, two-phase flow interfacial parameters in plug were determined, such as the lengths and the velocities of liquid plugs and bubbles, the shape of the gas-liquid interface, and hence instantaneous and cross sectional averaged void fraction and interfacial area. The results showed that the liquid plug velocities as well as the elongated bubble velocity increases with increasing superficial liquid and gas velocities. An experimental correlation for liquid plug velocity was proposed based on the present results. The results also showed that the time and cross-sectional averaged void fraction in the plug flow regime was only slightly influenced by the superficial gas velocity but was not influenced by the superficial liquid velocity.

The paper presents the application of an indirect variant of the boundary element method (BEM) to solve the two-dimensional steady flow of a Stokes liquid. In the BEM, a system of differential equations is transformed into integral equations. This makes it possible to limit discretization to the border of the solution. Numerical discretization of the computational domain was performed with linear boundary elements, for which a constant value of unknown functions was assumed. The verification was carried out for the case of flow in a square cavity with one moving wall. The results obtained show that the use of approximations by simple linear functions is relatively easy for different shapes of the area, but the result may be affected by significant errors.

In the presented work, the numerical simulations results of the liquid steel flow in the one strand tundish were shown. Influence of the modification and immersion depth in the liquid steel of the ladle shroud and subflux turbulence controller on hydrodynamic structure of the liquid steel movement in the working space of tundish were examined. The ladle shroud shape modification consisted on the decompression and compression of the main supplying stream of the tundish. The mathematical model used in the numerical simulations through physical modeling and industrial trials were validated. The numerical simulation results (using four variants of the modified ladle shroud immersion depth in the liquid steel) in the isothermal conditions using laboratory experiments on the water model were verified. Whereas, the numerical simulation results (using one of the tundish research variant) for non-isothermal were compared with the results from the industrial measurements. Three turbulence models: Realizable k-ε, RNG k-ε and SST k-ω were used in the computer calculations (performed via the Ansys-Fluent computer program). In order to obtain the actual view of the liquid steel flow hydrodynamic structure in the examined tundish for the two mathematical models using different turbulence models, which were most similar to the laboratory experiments and industrial measurements, the numerical simulations were performed in the non-isothermal conditions. The application in the computer calculations of the SST k-ω turbulence model caused the smallest differences between the numerical simulations, laboratory experiments and industrial measurements. Performed tests showed that ladle shroud can be used as a flow control device and the modified ladle shroud immersion at a depth of 0.1 m in the liquid steel caused the shortest range of the transition zone among the tested cases.

The article presents the modelling of the combustion process of liquid fuels using professional ANSYS FLUENT software. This program allows modelling the dynamics of compressible and incompressible, laminar and turbulent flows as well as heat exchange phenomena with occurrence and without chemical reactions. The model presented in the article takes into account the influence of the gas phase on the liquid phase during the fuel combustion process. The influence of velocity and pressure of the flowing gas and the type of flow has a significant impact on the combustion of liquid fuels. The developed model is fully reliable and the presented results are consistent with experimental research. The occurrence of a laminar sublayer in a turbulent flow was confirmed, and the thickness of this layer and the turbulent layer significantly influences the course of the combustion process. The use of the flat flow model reflects the basic phenomena occurring during the combustion of liquid fuels under turbulent conditions. The use of the program for flows with different flow velocity profiles is justified. It gives important information about the processes taking place during the combustion of liquid fuels. The results of numerical tests are presented graphically. The article presents graphs of velocity field, absolute pressure, power lines, temperature and density.
