The paper discuss the syntactic patters of new borrowed lexis and neologisms with regard to the relation between lexis and grammar (syntax). Using a functional approach, the analysis describes the selection process both at the level of lexis and form in various discourses. The authors provide support to their theses based on a selection of new lexis of the past two decades, explaining how it functions in the available text corpora.

The basis for the research was transcripts of 24 hours of monthly video recordings of three mothers speaking to their infants (for a period of eight months in each mother–infant dyad). In the frequency lexicon compiled from the mothers’ speech, the 20 most frequently used words were “be,” “right,” “well,” “self,” “yes,” “go,” “you,” ‘this,” “and,” “what,” “give,” “still,” “here,” “well,” “have,” “already,” “on,” “there,” “want,” and “where,” which underline the situational nature of mothers’ topics (“this,” “here,” “still,” “already,” “what,” and “where”) and their positive attitude towards the child (“right,” “yes,” “you,” and “well”). Moreover, the most often used nouns were the proper names of the infants in the diminutive form and an appellative “mom”; the most frequent adjectives were “little,” “good,” “big,” “pretty,” “beautiful,” and “clever,” while the most frequent adverbs were “nicely,” “beautifully,” and “well done.” Many of these words show a supportive and encouraging manner of infant-directed speech from mothers in infants’ preverbal stage of development.

multilingual mentl lexicon
nonselective lexical access
cognates processing
Opis:
Research on bilingual word recognition suggests that lexical access is nonselective with respect to language, i.e., that word representations of both languages become active during recognition. One piece of evidence supporting nonselective access is that bilinguals recognize cognates (words that are identical or similar in form and meaning in two or more languages) faster than noncognates. In fact, any difference between how cognates and ‘monolingual’ words are processed by multilinguals would indicate that the other, currently irrelevant language must have played a role as well, at least as long as the two groups of words are comparable with respect to all dimensions other than language membership. The aim of the present paper is to report on two visual perceptual experiments conducted within the lexical decision task paradigm whose aim was to test the assumptions concerning the special position of cognates (the cognate facilitation effect, cf. Dijkstra, 2005) within a trilingual mind and to answer the question whether trilinguals rely upon their second language lexical knowledge when recognizing L3 words. The results of the experiments attest to simultaneous activation and parallel processing as well as interaction among all the three languages. At the same time, they point to the fact that cross-linguistic lexical access and the source and strength of transfer may be constrained by variables such task demands.

Opis:
Network science is an emerging discipline drawing from sociology, computer science, physics and a number of other fields to examine complex systems in economical, biological, social, and technological domains. To examine these complex systems, nodes are used to represent individual entities, and links are used to represent relationships between entities, forming a web-like structure, or network, of the entire system. The structure that emerges in these complex networks influences the dynamics of that system. We provide a short review of how this mathematical approach has been used to examine the structure found in the phonological lexicon, and of how subsequent psycholinguistic investigations demonstrate that several of the structural characteristics of the phonological network influence various language-related processes, including word retrieval during the recognition and production of spoken words, recovery from instances of failed lexical retrieval, and the acquisition of word-forms. This approach allows researchers to examine the lexicon at the micro-, meso-, and macro-levels, holding much promise for increasing our understanding of language-related processes and representations.

We present a case study in valence comparison between closely related Kwa languages, assessing frames and meanings of the verb ba (‘come’) in Akan with a homophonous corresponding item in Ga. The discussion draws on the Akan dictionary (Christaller 1881), a Ga valence dictionary based on (Dakubu 2009), and an online annotated corpus of Akan hosted in TypeCraft (Beermann & Mihaylov 2014). With a view to the possibility of making use of resources for one language in the development of resources for another, we demonstrate how digital resources and linguistic specifications can inform each other.

Some 90 Roman stucco fragments, coming from the Archaeological Park of Herculaneum, underwent in the conservation-restoration process within the Istituto Superiore per la Conservazione ed il Restauro (ISCR) laboratories in Matera. Before the conservation activity, the wide number of this manufacts brought us to design a data management system, suitable for stucco findings. Nowadays, the international approaches towards data management of this kind of artifacts is extremely heterogeneous and the absence of an unequivocal data sheet makes the cataloguing very complex and laborious. Our studies on the fragments allowed us to draw up a specific cataloguing instrument for this kind of material, carried out with a software structuring data collection in order to respond to different necessities, such as completeness and updatability, required by an efficient data management system.

Opis:
This paper examines possible psycholinguistic mechanisms governing stem vowel changes of irregular verbs in intermediate English learners of German as a foreign language (GFL). In Experiment 1, nonce-infinitives embedded in an authentic fictional text had to be inflected for German preterite, thus testing possible analogy driven pattern associations. Experiment 2 explored the psycholinguistic reality of the so-called apophonic path by prompting two inflections for one given nonce-word. Data were analyzed using generalized mixed effects models accounting for within-subject as well as within-item variance. The results of Experiment 1 and 2 support the notion of a pattern associator and yield only scarce evidence for the psycholinguistic reality of a universal apophonic path. Therefore, the organization of irregular verb morphology in the mental lexicon of intermediate GFL learners might best be captured by the linguistic notion of structured lexical entries as well as the psycholinguistic mechanism of an analogy-based pattern associator.

The Historical Lexicon of Nationalism: Ethnicity, Ethnos, Race, Volksstamm: Historical FootnotesThis paper is primarily concerned with the etymology of some terms in the historical lexicon of nationalism: ethnicity, ethnos, race, Volksstamm. It is argued that European and US usages of race are radically different. It is also argued that the Habsburg-era term Volksstamm was the basis for the term narodnost in Socialist Yugoslavia.

This paper explores the nature of interlanguage (IL) as a developing system with a focus on the abstract lexical structure underlying IL construction. The developing system of IL is assumed to be ‘composite’ in that in second language acquisition (SLA) several linguistic systems are in contact, each of which may contribute different amounts to the developing system. The lexical structure is assumed to be ‘abstract’ in that the mental lexicon contains abstract elements called ‘lemmas’, which contain information about individual lexemes, and lemmas in the bilingual mental lexicon are language-specific and are in contact in IL production. Based on the research findings, it concludes that language transfer in IL production should be understood as lemma transfer of the learner's first language (L1) lexical structure at three abstract levels: lexical-conceptual structure, predicate-argument structure, and morphological realization patterns, and IL construction is driven by an incompletely acquired abstract lexical structure of a target language (TL) item.

The handwritten text recognition problem is widely studied by the researchers of computer vision community due to its scope of improvement and applicability to daily lives. It is a sub-domain of pattern recognition. Due to advancement of computational power of computers since last few decades neural networks based systems heavily contributed towards providing the state-of-the-art handwritten text recognizers. In the same direction, we have taken two state-of-the art neural networks systems and merged the attention mechanism with it. The attention technique has been widely used in the domain of neural machine translations and automatic speech recognition and now is being implemented in text recognition domain. In this study, we are able to achieve 4.15% character error rate and 9.72% word error rate on IAM dataset, 7.07% character error rate and 16.14% word error rate on GW dataset after merging the attention and word beam search decoder with existing Flor et al. architecture. To analyse further, we have also used system similar to Shi et al. neural network system with greedy decoder and observed 23.27% improvement in character error rate from the base model.

Wine is a well-known product and is part of human heritage and culture. However, studies indicate that many consumers do not understand the terminology used by wine experts. To understand if and how this applies to European Portuguese (EP), we asked two questions: (i) are non-experts aware of what certain wine descriptors mean when they read them on labels or in magazines?; (ii) what is the degree of proximity of non-expert definitions to expert definitions? We surveyed a group of speakers. Firstly, we asked for: “Define, in your own words, what you understand by [insert wine descriptor].” to see how informants defined in their own words what they understood by a given wine descriptor in a specific context related to wine. Secondly, we searched for the exact wine descriptor in specialized reference works and compiled the definitions presented in those works. The results of this sample allowed us to answer our questions with interesting facts about EP reality and what the non-expert consumer understand about wine descriptors, while providing us with clues to improve definitions in resources design to help non-expert consumers to better understand the wine domain and experts to express more clearly what they what to convey.
